@drgnslayr Agree that with his skill set the possibilities are endless and extremely enticing. But this is Coach Self we are talking about (and I don't mean that negatively).
If Thon Maker spends four years with Coach Self, he would develop both his current strengths as well as his current weaknesses (his inside back to the basket game). But with one year, coach would have to just let him play through his current strengths, which I haven't seen happen so far...
He is not the Self type of post player. He likes to play on the perimeter more. I don't think he would thrive in our system at least not in his one and only year.
Not getting too excited about the possibility of getting him.
@VailHawk Yep, how the season ends overwhelmingly influences our memories. That '08 team went through a bad patch in the middle too, but they were a great team and had a few bounces go their way to cement their greatness.
We've had other teams just as good, that didn't get some lucky bounces (1997, 2002, 2003, and 2011 teams come to mind). If any of those teams had won the championship and the 08 hadn't, we would most likely be referring to a different benchmark.
@ralster said:
The biggest lesson from 2008: Total team play on offense and on defense. Man, we've been chasing that ideal ever since... (I can talk about 08Champs all day, I'll stop now.)
The question is: If Davidson had hit that 3 at the buzzer or Derek Rose had hit that free-throw; would we still hold the 08 team in such high esteem?
Turning into a circus! hope this gets resolved soon, one way or the other, otherwise this will become a distraction for the team.
Any idea when Allen, Bolden, and Udoka will announce? Who's blinking first?
Giles to Duke. Official.
Let the dominos begin! Mr. Bolden, your move.
Bragg looks the tallest of them all.
@drgnslayr My first reaction when I read the news was the glass half-empty. I still feel the same. Hope I'm wrong and he gets cleared soon, but I have a bad feeling about this.
Does anyone know when the B12 tickets will go on sale? I had promised my kids last year that I'll take them to a game at Allen Fieldhouse this year. Looks like it will be the Baylor game on Jan 2nd (during their winter break). But don't think the tickets are on sale yet.
Would appreciate some help from the folks that are lucky enough to regularly attend games at AFH!.
Thanks!
@konkeyDong Vaughn's flash?
Since Jacque is my favorite all time hawk, I gotta ask: what exactly do you mean?
I know he couldn't take us to the promised land, but JV could ball!
Just sharing some recent edits...
Seriously! how is it still not on ESPN.com?!!!
we just won Gold!!!!
@Kip_McSmithers I recall Self's quote to be that players couldn't turn 25 during 2015. So even if they are 24 at the time of the games, their 25th birthday had to be in 2016.
Not sure but that's what I recall from the article at Kusports.
@ajvan Lester Earl?
@Statmachine Frank was an underrated #76. Devonte was ranked 36. Svi was considered the best prospect from Europe.
Vick's ranking is more comparable to Lucas and Traylor or other players we've had who transferred.
Again, not saying that he won't contribute or that we shouldn't have signed him, but was just asking if any of you have heard or seen something that suggests he is underrated and a steal (besides the fact that Self signed him and some other big names were after him)
I'm excited that he is now a Jayhawk, but to the posters that know more about him:
Is he insurance or is he really going to contribute years 2-4? I hope we develop him and really commit to him rather than recruiting over him every year and force him to transfer.
Sorry for being a debbi downer on the day of an exciting news.
Haven't seen him much but as he himself mentions "fitting the system", does he really fit Self ball? Or is it going to be another round hole /square peg situation (ala AWIII, Frankamp, even Greene)?
Hope he has a more rounded game instead of just being a 3point specialist
Love the image Kusports used on this story...😊
I would rather have the Greek footer on the bench next year and ready to go in 2016.
Next if we do get a perimeter player, I would rather have Mack who can play behind Svi and Greene, and contribute in his 3rd and 4th years.
Getting Brown means displacing Svi and/or Greene (even with a bum hip). Don't want that.
Svi is a stud and will help the team more than Brown. Even if Greene is a step behind, we have enough pieces to manage. Depth is over-rated.
@joeloveshawks well said. Jayhawks basketball is going to be fine next year regardless if we sign anyone or not.
We have underachieved in the tournament last two years and perhaps we can overachieve the next year with our post shortcomings.
Self usually does his best with his back against the wall.
I was so worried in 2012 seeing that our 6th man was Teahan (no disrespect intended) but that team found a way to win. I think our perimeter is top notch and post is more than serviceable. We don't need a savior. We'll be better with Diallo but We'll be just fine without him also.
@Crimsonorblue22 :) I'm not at liberty to say, but yes I can be a pretty mean dad, even when they are supporting the Jayhawks recruiting work!
@Crimsonorblue22 I think BG will be fine. Medically, I don't know how serious his procedure is. But from a basketball preparation/conditioning perspective, even if he's a little behind, this is his third year. He will be more up to speed on Self ball than any freshmen.
Just sayin'... last week he asked for his picture to be edited showing him wearing the uniforms of each of his 5 potential school choices. Since he asked a Jayhawk fan/editing account, he better pick KU!.
By the way, that Jayhawk editor got grounded for doing Diallo's picture edit while he should have been doing his homework!
@drgnslayr You may be right, that Diallo signing is hinging on Ingram. I'm not sure but it would get me on the fence if that is the case. I do want Diallo, but would really hate for Greene or Svi to leave or be banished to the bench this year.
We'll find out soon enough. If Ingram does pick KU, I'm sure I'll find it in my heart to accept him as a Jayhawk and cheer for him. :)
Actually guys, I really meant it. I would rather sink or swim with Greene and Svi, instead of a one-year recruit (who may or may not be better than them).
Greene/Svi can add just as much to the TEAM as whatever the talented freshman could bring if not more. Additionally, one or both of them may end up staying and be even better the following year. If we get Ingram, it may mean Greene and/or Svi leaves and we'll have a big hole the following year.
The only guy we need is Diallo. If we get the big Greek kid also, that would be cherry on top.
I hope he picks NCSU or UNC or Duke.
Anyone but us.
@MoonwalkMafia I understand, but it's easy to put new plays in when you have such a veteran and high talent level personnel on the team. Our freshmen have hard time remembering the simple plays and being in the right place.
Still, not saying that Self is better than Pop but that what you can do offensively is very dependent on who you have.
@MoonwalkMafia though I agree that Self is not an offensive genius, I think it's a little unfair to imply that he has no offensive imagination. And as far as comparison to Popovich? He has three hall of famers playing together for over a decade. You can get a lot creative in that situation compared to having college freshmen and sophomores
@KUinLA Fair enough. I'm just afraid that we are due for a downturn that we haven't seen since Larry Brown days. And Self leaving could be that disturbing of the apple cart. I'm hopeful that Self will eventually tweak his philosophy and take us from a very good program to a great program that can consistently win in March as it does In regular season.
Remember we were known as even bigger chokera during Roy Williams era, although I do miss his offense
@nuleafjhawk haha...I haven't seen the movie; maybe I should check it out. My nieces sang this song, last time they visited; that's the first time I heard it.
I'm picturing Self singing the "Cups" song to his jaded KU fans....
"You're gonna miss me when I'm gone...."
@KUinLA I'm assuming you'd be happy if Self left, but honestly, who would you rather have coaching at KU. What are the realistic options out there? (Coach K and Calipari won't be realistic)
Just curious to know from your point of view.
Where's Svi????
So if we get Ingram and he is being promised to start (ala Oubre), Greene or Svi will have to sit. Do we really want that?
If he is someone, that will come in and sit a year and be ready the following year, then it makes sense. That's when we'll most likely lose Svi and possibly Selden.
We will also lose a lot of our bigs (Perry, Jamari, Hunter). But though Ingram has the height, he doesn't have the body to play inside (maybe he will in Year 2).
@JhawkAlum I don't doubt that he held back a little, but I'm sure another year has improved him as a player also. Maybe if he stayed at KU another year, he would have finished stronger.
I'd rather give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he continues to get better and reflects positively on KU
@drgnslayr Yep, when we got Xavier and Selby, they were both the icing on an already great veteran team.
I think it changed with the Wiggins class.
Maybe if we don't get anybody more this year, the post players can develop that chip that you talk about.
Last time I was worried about not having good recruits was when Morri left. That team turned out pretty good.
Was Diello supposed to be committing today or is that next week?
@Crimsonorblue22 maybe just me, but didn't find either one that impressive in this one on one battle. 😏
@drgnslayr the more I hear about this Maker kid, I really hope we stay away from him.
He has unique talent, but never thought he would be a good fit in Self's system anyway and now with this type of talk, I think Kentucky is the best place for him.
Hoping for a Beasty year from Wayne!!!
Win or Lose, I'd rather do it with program guys committed to the university for multiple years, instead of OAD. Even if Selden doesn't improve one bit next year (though I'm hopeful he will), I would still not trade him for a Newman or a Brown.
Still the most devastating loss of my life as a Jayhawk fan. I was at KU then... 😔
@JayHawkFanToo I see what you are saying and agree that the African American community needs to purge this word from the vocabulary.
However, the analogy you used, of a white person saying the exact same thing about a black player is not entirely accurate.
If Harrison would have used a derogatory word for white people in his comment, then it would be. I think in that scenario it would be a bigger deal, but still not as big as it would have been the other way around. Just the way it works in the minority vs majority dynamic I guess.
@drgnslayr agree with all you're saying about Kentucky and Calipari, but just wanted to say that Ashley Judd was at the game. They showed her in the first half when Kentucky came back and tied the game. Not sure if they showed her in the second half. I went to bed after the first half and got the pleasant surprise when I woke up in the middle of the night and checked the news. 😄
@MoonwalkMafia I'm feeling hopeful that this core of players that will return next year and the year after will take us to the top again. I love our guard situation for the next two years.
We do lack a good big, and need help next year. But if we have to suffer another year to get out of this OAD cycle by getting a couple of 2-4 year players, then I'm good.
@jaybate-1.0 would be happy about the bigs, would hate the perimeter signing.
