@wrwlumpy did you really have to post that picture?! 😤😡 Bad flashback!
Just wanted to say that I don't think Calipari's platoon system is part of his some Master Plan. I think he kind of fell into it, when the 2014 team under-achieved and a lot of guys ended up coming back because their draft position wasn't what they expected. He already had a next group lined, so he spun it the best way he could.
Not that it can't become a thing for him and as Jaybate says, the Nike truck dumps another load there, he'll probably end up with the same situation.
As for Diallo to KU, who was the last freshman big at KU that averaged 30 minutes?
@drgnslayr Is it just me or was it really that early on in his career he seemed more like a players' coach rather than an authoritarian figure and one of the reasons his teams before Kansas as well as early Kansas teams played with more enthusiasm. For some reason it seems like he connected better with the players back then.
@dylans For what it's worth (which is absolutely nothing), but one of my son's friend at school is also friends with Brown (works with the same basketball trainer). He has been adamant that Brown has his eyes set on Kentucky and there is no way he is going to Kansas.
@HighEliteMajor I agree. As I've said before, I really don't want any OAD perimeter player. Period. If Oubre comes back, that will be a dilemma in itself as someone will have to leave or redshirt or waste a year on the bench. But a second year Oubre would be much better and worth the dilemma than anyone else. We do need a 5 though, and watching Zimmerman during the dunk contest last night had me drooling, but I guess that's not really a possibility...le sigh.
Boy these banners sure look good....
There is value in the continuity of the streak for three more years, as it would become a record and stand for possibly decades.
However, on a one-off conference championship versus a final four appearance, I would take final four every day of the week and twice on Sunday's.
For one more national championship I would trade away all 11 conference titles.
@KUinLA no offense, but if I was this disheartened with the KU coach and KU Basketball, I would have just stopped following it. You must be a masochist. 😄
@DoubleDD well Roy and KU were considered the ultimate chokers during Roy years. Roy should have won in 97 and and in 03.
Leaving after back to back final fours did elevate his perception though.
Interestingly enough, I welcomed Bill Self as the anti-Roy in that his teams may lose a bit more in regular season but they will play tough and go deep in March. And his first season was kinda like that. Then after a couple of flameouts, 08 took the monkey off his back (which would have grown into an 800lb gorilla by now had Derrick Rose made a free throw!)
But As I recover from the loss to WSU, I don't think I'm anywhere near ready to give up on Self yet. We need to be careful what we wish for. Yes, we have underachieved in the tournament more than we'd like to buy the alternatives could be a lot worse. Here's hoping Self makes some adjustments or the universe balances out for us gives us multiple championships in the next few years.
We do need help at the 5 (both offensively and defensively). Don't know if Thorne would be an upgrade over Lucas and Hunter, but the more the merrier I guess. Don't think we have a shot at Zimmerman and even Diello is the not Self-type 5 we are looking for. Slim pickings at this point for a b2b center (including Thon Maker)
Other than that, if we don't pick up anybody else and only lose Oubre and Cliff, I would be more than happy with what we have coming back. I'm really hoping that we DON;T get any top rated perimeter player like Newman or Brown (hearing rumors he's Kentucky bound anyway). We will have a veteran perimeter core group and that is better for us than a superstar OAD circus. Now if we pick-up an underrated four year raw guard that won't mind playing/learning behind FM and DG, then fine.
@DCHawker Rabb not coming to KU. I think you mean Bragg.
@HighEliteMajor I agree we shouldn't be bashing other coaches that are over achieving. But I also think it's unfair to think that Self couldn't have done that with inferior talent at a smaller school. He did overachieve at other schools with lower ranked talent. For some reason it seems like at Kansas we are just unable to develop that chip on the shoulder that Self teams of earlier years had. Maybe they are just too afraid to lose and Self hasn't been able to properly motivate them.
It will be interesting to see what Marshall would do when he has the top talent and is expected to win every year.
And P.S ND deserved to win. They got robbed. Was so hoping that desperation three would have gone in.
@BeddieKU23 we had the most experienced team in 2013 and ironically we lost due to loss of poise.
Still I love EJ for being the ultimate Jayhawk for four years and for that amazing 2012 run to the final game.
@jaybate-1.0 I have been wondering this the last couple of years as well. I love Hudy and what she does but when I see pictures of guys training the way they do, I always wonder if that is putting so much stress on their body in conjunction with bball training that their bodies start to break down. Selden's knees being the most recent example. Just speculation on my part.
@wissoxfan83 I think if he wins the championship this year, there is higher probability of him leaving for NBA.
You can't top an undefeated championship season. He can leave at an all time high.
@HighEliteMajor I don't understand the nuances of basketball as you and some of the other posters do, but some ramblings below anyway....
My concern is not our offense, which has always looked simplistic to my untrained eye. I've just accepted that now. That's not going to change.
However, what I don't understand is that Coach prides himself on defense and toughness, yet every single upset that we've had has come down to just lack of energy and relentless defense. We always seem to come out flat and that doesn't jive with the "tough" and "defense first" identity that Coach preaches. What gives?
WSU played manic defense. They were all over our guys and in their faces whether in the post or on the perimeter. We more often than not left their guys open.
Getting an offensive genius on the staff would help, but so will getting the team ready for each and every game is needed. Coach is usually nonchalant in public about any "extra motivation" schtick, which is understandable, but I hope he uses every single ammunition to get the team to play with an edge.
@Lulufulu I saw that look on Frank's face as well. It reminded me of Kirk Hinrich's freshmen year when we lost against Duke in the 2nd round as 8 seed. It was a tough game and Kirk played his heart out. I'm hopeful, with Frank and Devonte at the helm, we will do better in the tournament the next couple of years.
@wissoxfan83 great post. I was also looking at the 4 year pattern and consoling myself that next year could be final four.
Thank you Jayhawks for another great season and eleventh straight Big XII championship. Frank Mason, you were the rock and MVP of this team. Keep your head high and come back stronger next season.
I'm leaving the chat. too stressed out. May be that will help us score.
Bill Self better change things up (press, zone, whatever), to get the momentum shift. This is not looking good.
Effin' Refs!
@Crimsonorblue22 we're getting mugged on every possession!
@KUSTEVE we have done better in all statistical categories, except that they made three more threes. I really think we need to just outscore them in the paint and pick up the defensive pressure. Rest will fall in place.
I have sick feeling in my stomach. could be the guacamole....I hope.
@brooksmd putting on my optimistic glasses: maybe it's good that we are down at the half. Will give Self the ammunition to get them focused. Frank is the key though, he can't pick up the third foul early.
We need to exceed their energy.
@Crimsonorblue22 Expected that last shot. Horrible shot by Selden, had to be countered by a three.
Rebound with both hands!!!!
WSU is going to have the lead. Not good.
@BeddieKU23 Oubre may work, but Baker is slippery and will lose Oubre. Either Selden or Graham may have to get him.
hopefully the law of averages, or one of our defenders, will slow Baker down the 2nd half.
Shocker fans seem to be much louder than us. What gives?
@Eric Yep, this team is not going to go away until the final buzzer.
flagrant 1, 2 , and 3, I say!!!
that would have been awesome if Traylor had made that dunk. But instead they get the basket the other way.
Oubre was late on defense and left the shooter open. Good that they missed.
@globaljaybird I wish I was there to tell Marshall where he can go.
I think we need Frank and Devonte both on the floor for majority of the game.
got bailed out there. Oubre should have played under control.
finally some calls going the other way
somebody with more basketball knowledge than needs to explain why we are having trouble establishing position in the paint when we are bigger than them?
too many whistles against us
need to establish inside first where we have the clear advantage. WSU is defending well though
@Crimsonorblue22 yes, apparently it was a coincidence, but I liked it and it suits Brannen's personality too! :)
Hey Shockers! Ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?

Perfect Play. Imperfect execution.
@Crimsonorblue22 Cliff is there in spirit. Once a Jayhawk, always a Jayhawk. He is still part of the "Squad". :)
HEY AGGIES! You Ready?!
Big 12 0-2 so far. TX could make it 0-3.
Takes the shine off of XI straight to be honest.
Happy for Haase, but sad that Big12 takes another beating in the tournament. Have to do better to justifybthe best conference talk. Wish ND was the #3 that went down.
@jaybate-1.0 awesome read on Self! Loved it and getting even more pumped for the game tomorrow!
