@RockkChalkk You never know how they look at these things, but I can imagine they could find minutes for both of them.
@RockkChalkk Does his statement about playing time put us at a disadvantage......? Could he see less competition for playing time at ISU (no true big) or SJU ?
@BeddieKU23 Probably so. I guess he takes the first one that accepts...which may cause the other to go somewhere else.....
@FarSideHawk Very well said. I can't believe that people are even beginning to think the thoughts that have appeared on this board.
Self has won80% of his games. 11 straight. Yes....I get it....greatness is measured by final fours and NCs. He has 2 and 1. We would have preferred some more.
Coach K has often underachieved in the tournament, spectacularly at times...but he has more final fours and NCs sprinkled in there....so that is a big difference when compared to Self's tourney record. But, I'm not even ready to think about not having Self as our coach.
@jaybate-1.0 Regarding UK and Duke getting highly ranked recruits that don't play...Interesting question.
I imagine that Johnson and Lee at UK, for example, could not have imagined that the would get the sparse minutes they are getting. I would only guess that they are bidding their time until next year (which is 2 more years than they thought they would be at UK) or they believe that they can still get drafted with only a little playing time.
Given these circumstances, it will be interesting to see if Calipari can continue to have the riches of talent that he has had.
@BeddieKU23 No, I agree we need an upgrade. But, I think convincing both Thorne and Diallo to come might be tough.
Just wondering how coaches handle such situations.
@truehawk93 I'd be surprised if Selden is gone......I don't see how he or his family would think that he is a sure 1st rounder. I realize guys leave when they shouldn't all the time.....it just doesn't seem like Wayne is that desperate.
@drgnslayr My impression when I read the quote was that the guys he didn't mention...Oubre and Alexander....might be the ones he was referring to.
I didn't think of Greene.....so I suppose that is a possibility also.
But.....I think we read too much into comments...He most likely was referencing some of the guys that could improve, not necessarily all. Let's face it...odds are that Oubre goes and probably Alexander also.
That could have been all he meant.
I'd be real curious to know how Self is playing the Thorne / Diallo pitch. I'm sure he would love to have both, but kids want to go where they can play right away.....and adding both of them would really crowd the frontcourt.
@HighEliteMajor It does. Does it feel a little desperate to you?
@nuleafjhawk I can tell from your posts that you are a passionate fan. I feel your pain on the early exits in the tournament.
But Self has won 80% of his games, 11 straight conference championships, 1 NC and one runner-up. It will take more than 3 straight tournament disappointments (although at least Michigan was good) before I take the attitude you are taking.....but you certainly have the right to feel the way you do. If I ever start thinking like that, my next thought will be....be careful what you wish for.....you never know if the next person will even do as well.
@sfbahawk Agree with Beddie....Cauley - Stein will be a high pick.
Athletic big man that can play defense....the NBA values those guys....
and they "experts" have him targeted as a lottery pick.
@cragarhawk No question that Izzo is the best tournament coach in recent history. He is doing it with an experienced team. He has good, but not great players. Dawson was very highly regarded. Valentine.....highly regarded. Trice...under the radar. He picked up Forbes after he played at Cleveland State. Costello was player of the year in Michigan.....but is a good role player.
They beat a UVA squad that struggled a bit the last part of the season. OU couldn't quite beat them. A good OT performance today. A classic Izzo run.....but I think their run ends against Duke.
@betterfireE As it relates to Oubre, you've hit on the main point about potential and when to declare. Yes, Oubre could improve by staying. But the NBA drafts on potential. There is always the question.....does a player develop better by playing a year in college or by practicing for a year in the NBA.....I don't have the answer to that question. I'm sure the experts do.
But conventional wisdom says that if you are guaranteed to go in the lottery, and maybe even if you are guaranteed to go in the 1st round...you go. If the projections hold true and KO is a lottery pick....if he were my son, I would tell him to take the guaranteed money....no question.
@HighEliteMajor Those are all good point, but I have been thinking.....Is the talent level gap all that great? Certainly, WSUs experience level is part of the equation. I think our talent level is greater...but maybe not as much as we might think. During WSUs little run in the last 3 years they have had Early, who is an NBA talent. Will Baker and VanVleet play in the league? Probably.
Of course, if their talent level is closer to ours than people think that also is a complement to Marshall...if he identified and developed talent that others didn't identify.
@BeddieKU23 I would think that Baker would make his decision based on whether he is projected to be a sure first rounder or not....regardless of who his coach is....while recognizing there is some risk with a new coach and new system. But if he isn't pretty sure he is going in the first round he should stay, regardless of who the coach is...IMO
@HighEliteMajor I try not to bash the other coaches. But, I think Marshall did bring some of it on with his chickenhawks comment. Bashing in response to that, is, my view, warranted to a point.
Also, some people just see it as fun.....their right I guess.....
Now, come on, Weber has left himself wide open with some of the things he has said and done....
@wissoxfan83 Wow. Good calls
@wissoxfan83 Who do you have from the East?
ESPN is reporting that not only are Marshall and Smart both candidates but that they both want the job.
Should be interesting.....
@brooksmd I wonder if that hasn't already happened......hence the push for Diallo.
@jaybate-1.0 One of these days, I'll learn to use the sarcasm font.
@BeddieKU23 Trimble is returning?
@Blown Let me know what that says......
@Crimsonorblue22 Was that type of play reviewable?
@jaybate-1.0 I can see why they would initially see that a part of the ball was within the cylinder....
@drgnslayr I think Self' s record of having guys improve is pretty good.
Mason and Graham will be better. Lucas will be also (although I agree with those that say he should be a role player). Ok... jury is out on Wayne and Jamari regressed this year. There are exceptions.
We've seen glimpses of Svi's talent.....really excited about seeing him next year.
@jaybate-1.0 Judgement part of the rule was bad ....but not as obvious as you say....especially without the benefit of replay.
@jaybate-1.0 I should have said...judgement as to whether it is outside the cylinder.
@jaybate-1.0 Judgement call by the ref....as to whether it has a chance to go in.
Does anyone think that the ref could say..."Ok end of game, here' smy chance....I'll make this last call that screws SMU"
JB...I love ya man, but you're whipping the board into a conspiracy frenzy.
Just like I said to HEM one time....you remind me of Lardass in Stand by Me......you get the crowd going and then just sit back and watch the havoc that you have wrought.
Next, I suppose you're going to tell me that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone.....I mean he did learn how to shoot like that in the Marines!
:)
@HighEliteMajor Yes. We are.
@JayhawkRock78 But, technically, the refs made the right call. The fault, if there is a fault, lies with the SMU player that made a bad play.
Sorry, I'm not buying the conspiracy stuff on that game.
@ralster While we always want good competition.....doesn't the prospect of an actual good coach (and as much as I hate to admit it....Marshall has proven to be a very good coach) at UT worry us a little? They will be able to get their share of top recruits based on geography alone. How many conference championships would we have won if UT had a good coach?
@wrwlumpy I agree that it would be foolish to leave WSU for Alabama career-wise....only reason would be money....and I think he will get other opportunities for money.
The main one that comes to my mind is Selden
How about that. Looks like WSU left everything out on the floor last Sunday.
"Surprising"
@DoubleDD I think a year will make a difference. Will it make enough so that we become a title contender? I think we need a big man to go through (Cliff returns...not likely IMO, or one of the big man recruits). Like it or not, that is what Self needs to be successful.
@jayhawk-007 I agree that WSU deserves congratulations. But, I don't agree that we can't say our team needed to show more effort. WSU won because they wanted it more.....for whatever reason.
I'm not so sure they would win a series between the two teams.....IU was a middle of the pack Big 10 and WSU scraped by them.
I can't explain why one team would want to win a game more than the other when a sweet 16 berth is on the line.....but it appeared that way to me.
I look forward to keeping in touch and discussing the finalization of recruiting, the summer games, and predictions for the upcoming team.
Each basketball year is a new one.
Should be fun.
@HighEliteMajor Wow. I had been thinking the same thing...as we get older we think about such things.
@Jayrawks1 We didn't have a big man that could score. I think Cliff could have been that guy down the stretch. We will never know.....very said for the kid.
@Crimsonorblue22 I respect what you are saying.....but aren't you making excuses?
The first 15 mins. of the game played out like I imagined. We were the better team. Longer, more talented. Then after they made that little run, it seemed that they wanted it more than us. I hate to say it, but they deserve to keep on playing...we do not.
I love all of our guys. But, people have complained about Wayne all year long. In the biggest game of the year....he disappeared completely. Perry and Frank were the only ones that showed up. Graham also, but only in the 2nd half when the game was mostly over.
Their experience showed. They were balanced. We were not.
Cotton killed us. Their guards took over the game.
End of story.
Interesting article in the KC Star about the players not regarding the game as a rivalry. Makes sense. We haven't played each other and most of the players (other than Ellis, Baker, Wessel) are not from Kansas.
I would think it would mean something to Ellis.
@KUSTEVE I love Frank, but man Van Vleet is awfully good. I think they have an advantage there....we just need to keep that advantage to a minimum and outplay them elsewhere....
@KUinLA You make some good points. The longer term results are better indicators than the upsets in any one individual year. The Big 12 appears o be strong year in and year out....a deep conference with good teams...but without any elite teams.....other than, for the most part, KU.
I take exception when the announcers, pundits, etc. say that, as a result of the 1st round upsets this year, it proves the Big 12 is not strong.
@HighEliteMajor I'm wondering if we might see Traylor a little more if Lucas can't keep up with Carter.
Also, I would think that either Cotton or Baker might have a hard time guarding Oubre with his reach.....hopefully he can take them to the hole.
@KUSTEVE I meant to comment earlier on their coaches statement. He said we had some "non-shooters" that hit shots. I'm not sure who he was talking about. I guess Devonte? Even if his 3 pt % is not very good.....I don't think they scouted us very well.
@Crimsonorblue22 You are correct. Defense has been IUs weakness. They do have a good offense......better than ours when they are on.
I feel like we should beat them when I look at the individual players.
I am glad you are confident.......I will be too!
@KUSTEVE I hope a lot of people didn't think we would get beat by NMSU.
I am glad you are confident.
