At least these are better than last years March uni's
No not my life span. But Thirty years of KU being something great.
1983-84 Second in Big 8
84-85 Second
85-86 1st
86-87 Tied for 2nd
87-88 3rd
88-89 6th Just remember this place causeit's the lowest KU has ever finished in the last 30 years.
89-90 2nd
90-91 1st
91-92 1st
92-93 1st
93-94 3rd
94-95 1st
95-96 1st
Start of Big12 play
96-97 1st
97-98 1st
98-99 2nd
99-2000 5th Here is another number to remember it's the worst finish in Big12 play.
2000-01 2nd
01-02 1st
02-03 1st
03-04 3rd
2004-2014 1st x 10
That's 20 1st place finishes in the last 30 years of conference play. 3 different coaches.
Give me one other major school that can say that.
@drgnslayr Heart!! He had heart and he showed it last night.
He really has shown it all year in how he has let his playing time dwindle here and there and still been there for his teammates. He just showed us last night on the floor.
@icthawkfan316 the schedule had a large role to play in this as well. I've heard it thrown out there that our schedule was more difficult this year than that of any team in the past 8-10 years
They have beaten 12 top 50 teams, that's more than any one else in the country..
My opinion on three OADs is if you bring in four to 6 kids, you have a full class like this year with Mason and Green and Frankamp. Sure Wiggins Seldon and Embid leave, but look whats left.
Those are three good players that have all contributed this year and will for the next 2 or 3 years as well and will become the leaders for those other OAD's and holdovers.
You steal a talent like Traylor here and there and a Lucas and they might be a project at first but look at TRob and that project. That worked out well not only for KU but for Thomas too(hope he returns from his injury soon).
Is it ideal the OAD process? No way not even close. The new NBA commissioner is talking about raising the age to 20. Wish that rule was in place now KU would have Wiggins for one more year.
Now if Coach Self goes off the deep end andgoes after 5 or 6 OAD's alla Cal then we are in trouble. But we all know that Coach Self is a lot smarter than that.
Was he Smart to stay another year? Did he not see all the incoming freshman that were coming and going on a OAD?
Look last year he was going to be a top 10 pick, this year there are a lot of guys ahead of him and his own stunts have dropped him further.
Will he even be a lottery pick this year?
KU could use a big man coach in a a year or two if the League or overseas doesn't work out.
Come back as a grad assistant get his doctorate in his studies.
He would be a great role model for so many young student athletes.
Nice words from Self and a great attitude from Justin.
http://www2.kusports.com/news/2014/mar/04/roles-played-acting-ku-senior-wesley-left-mark-key/ ↗
@HighEliteMajor Yes I did say Wesley could step in. Maybe its for a breather, maybe its for an energy spark? Who knows but he could play a few minutes if needed, if he couldn't he wouldnt be on the team.
I'm not saying he would win us a game, but he could keep it going for us for a few minutes.
I think that Coach Self doesn't bring in overly emotional players. Sure the twins could get that way and TRob, became that way after his journey though hell.
But what other players really played with their emotions on their sleeves?
Perry Ellis is almost the poster child for Bill Self recruiting. Go play your game, don't get into what the other team is saying or the crowd. We see that with Mason here and there that he runs his mouth, but give him a year and he won't be that way.
I think if you have to coax your team into playing you either didn't have them prepared for the game or you don't have the right players for your system.
WSU has talent, but is that talent at the same level as say a Duke or KU or Syracuse?
Do they have the muscle to play against bigger teams?
They have an advantage, they haven't been beat up by a tough conference. They are healthy and going into the Big Dance thats huge. Look at KU trying to get Embid healthy for the run, why is he hurt? Playing against bigger stronger faster teams, that want to beat on you to slow you down.
Is Marshall a coach that can keep them on track and not panick if they are down 12 at halftime to a UNC or Arizona?
Is is going to happen? I'd bet against it, but they do have 31 out of the way.
Shouldn't OKst be concerned about liars?
Just ask Dez Bryant what happens when you lie?
I play the man who steps up in practice. The man who wants to get in there and be a team player and sacrifice himself for the betterment of the team.
Be it Black who we know can muscle in the paint, bu can also get in foul trouble.
Be it Traylor who has a high motor, but can he keep it going for 25 minutes?
Be it Lucas who has the size and skills but does he have the repetitions to flow well with the other 4 guys on the court.
Look they are all great players and ambassadors for KU and most likely all starting at other schools. Let's just be happy we have three really strong guys to come in and back it up. Even Wesley could step in and be serviceable to give those guys a breather.
@Crimsonorblue22 I agree, what is to say he won't get all huffy puffy pouty against Lamar in the first round and get ejected for kicking a chair??
Then were is OK st? At home watching the games like us fans, but I'm sure Marcus won't be invited to any team viewing parties, as the rest of the team has to be tired of his shit.
Somewhere amongst all these messages I saw where somebody was asking about OK st being penalized for seeding in the NCAA tournament for the loses without Smart, and if KU could do that about the games Embid missed.
Last year Kentucky missed the tournament after Noel went down, should they have been looked at differently? Now I know he wasn't going tone able to play in the tournament like Smart will be able too, but just saying.
And I did laugh at one of the latest bracket projections, OKst went from a 12 seed to an 11 after beating KU. While KU went from a 2 seed to a one seed.
It must reallysuck to be OKst and Marcus Smart.
I know non of the KU coaches would say they were going to cut down the nets on an away court.
I am guessing here, but that was probably part of Fords halftime speech to fire his team up, asking them if they wanted to watch KU cut the nets down on their home floor?
One of the student trainers then texted his friends in the crowd to have them storm the court so that if for some reason Bill Self turned into BarnesWeberHoibergFordDrew and would allow his team to do so the over aboundance of students on the floor would not let the ladders on the floor.
Then again when was the last time OKst got to cut any nets down? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? 2005 thats when under Eddie Sutton.
@wissoxfan83 He probably has they just haven't been on TV that much so nobody saw him nationally there.
That or he didn't sit behind the bench and just blended into the crowd somewhere.
But then again Marshall probably wouldn't allow him in the building unless KU agreed to play them every year.
With the blue bloods of the ACC UNC and Duke along with the newcomer and perennial winner Syracuse it is hard to imagine that Virginia, yes Virginia won the ACC.
Especially when you look at how UNC surged after a rough start how 'Cuse was undefeated for so long all season and well Duke has the Coach Consonants along with freshman headliner Parker.
And yet it was a team that few pay attention to that wins the league. We aren't talking about a Tim Duncan led Wake Forest team, or a miracle NCState team, or even a Maryland team that pulss a few upsets at home. We are talking about Virginia.
So Kansas wins its 10 Big12 conference in a row. All while Kstate, Iowa St, Baylor, Texas, OU, and Missouri all tried to knock them down. All those teams had good if not great seasons in the last ten years and yet KU out did them or at least equaled them.
KU might have lost to OKst and won with a little help, but do you think any of the 9 other teams really want to help KU win another title?
This is something to be impressed with, to remember for the ages. A decade of being a major conference winner. Throw in there a National title a Final four and a few other surprises along with some great players and stories and well wow, just WOW.
Amazement. So when you look across the landscape and see that Florida won the SEC, or Arizona won the Pac12 and people think thats normal. They look and see that Virginia won the ACC and they think "how did that happen?"
But normal, normal is KU winning the Big12. No surprises, just normalcy running its course through the Big12. Normal is KU having stand out student athletes that represent the team and the University very well. Normal is having a coach that just keeps on doing what he does.
Normal is KU.
Yeah when they snow ball into an avalanche its hard to win a game, but you win as a team, you lose as a team.
And here sir is your Amen.
AMEN!!!!
OSU played like they had something to prove.
Marcus Smart played like he had something to prove.
Travis Ford coached like he...never mind can't say it without laughing.
But the Cowboys knowingly played if they lost they were done for a tournament run unless they won the Big12 tournament. They played like a team on the ropes should play, like a scared animal in a corner.
KU played like a team that was scared of that cornered animal, and let the aggressiveness of OSU get to them. From turnovers, fouls, rebounds, speaking of rebounds, Smarts flying in the lane and kicking back out was a dagger to KU.
They wanted it more, and that's sad. It's sad for the coaches not having KU prepared for a battle. It's sad for the players that they couldn't be ready and play with pride. It's sad for the fans because we care, that and any time I have to hear Travis Ford talk after a big win it makes me appreciate the how Bill Self takes wins and losses with class. It's sad because the Big12 officials are into some home gym cooking this year. It has helped us at home, KState, ISU all home teams have got a lot more calls this year than normal.
Something to prove, thats what OSU played like last night. Now for the next 3 regular season games, the next three Big12 tournament games and the next 5 NCAA tournamnet games KU needs to play like. Like they have something to prove. That Adnrew Wiggins is as good as billed. That Joel Embid is as dominant in the paint on both ends of the floor that he has worked so hard on. For the whole team to stand up and prove to everyone that they at KU.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
I like Greg Marshall til he open his mouth to talk.
The one or 10 of them that read after the game, "back to" and Big12Champions
@Hawk8086 I do't know the year but St. Joesphes went undefeated a few years back in their regular season and won their league turny, and they were not a 1 seed nor a 2.
http://espn.go.com/ncb/bracketology ↗
In his lastest bracketoly he has all three Kansasschools in the same Midwest bracket.
WSU as the one. KU as the two and KSU as the 8.
I get the NCAA likes good story lines and all, but cmon already, this won't happen.
Now the Michigan 3 seed playing KU third round I could see them setting up and even Colorado in the second round fora rematch.
@wissoxfan83 But they still scored it a dunk officially, probably due to they don't have "throw down" on the official stat sheet used by the University, Big12 and the NCAA.
Needed one at the end of the game.
We messed with Texas!
While watching the game on TV like I always try to do I like to see the signs in the crowd.
Yesterday one of the ones I kept seeing was "LOL Texas"
A few weeks ago someone had a sign that read, "Thats what we do"
There was another one yesterday of of JoJo screaming and underneath they put "Im baaaaaack"
Gotta like a crowd that has original ideas.
In the past three years there have been more than 3 memorable dunks, but I have three that stand out.
Robinsons base line throw down vs Baylor.
McLemore had a few last year from the base line as well, so pick any.
And then Blacks throw it in dunk last night v Texas.
Or feel free to add your own.
jaybate I have to agree about JoJo's blocks and his presence while healthy in the paint.
But to this concern, have our gaurds in the past been bailed out on D by JoJo this year, Withey the past two, Robinson as well? Has their D in the paint covered up our guards poor D?
I'm not saying it's terrible D, but while JoJo was less than 100% this years group was exposed a little on the perimeter.
Wayne Seldon had 7 assist vs UT.
Against Tech the whole team had 6.
KU shot just one % point from the field lower than UT did from the line.
UT had 19 offensive rebounds. KU had 26 defensive rebounds. Carry the one that makes 45 missed shots by UT. Not including all the blocked ones.
KU had 26 fast break points UT zero.
Points off of turnover, KU had 15. UT just 1.
That is a complete game for KU and just to add some insult KU's bench score 33 points while UT's had only 13.
I laughed at the announcers last night and decided they were longhorn network guys. When the score was 3-8 they were talking about how well Texas was playing and KU was flat.
Then after a 25-3 KU run it was that that 3 pointer was going to spark UT going into halftime. Then the one time KU didn't score they were talking about how the UT D was stepping up and playing tough.
They kept talking about how great a coach Barnes was and he should be in the running of National coach of the year. Barely if ever giving KU and Self credit for coming back and destroying a team that beat them earlier without a healthy JoJo.
That they never mentioned either that Embid was not playing healthy in the first meeting.
Oh well its not the commentators that make the game its how bad you beat Texas when you play them.
I thought the player tweets were funny as they actually paid $5 buck instead of the 3 bucks and change stating they ate more than that.
@Crimsonorblue22 I know they have never been selfish, Tharpe has 12 assist a while back. They are good at sharing, this team should get 6 in the first half with the scores and shooters.
And if not we should have a lot more offensive rebounds or trips to the line.
I like this team a lot, so many weapons, so many options. But gotta share the ball and good things happen.
OK I cleaned up the Harry Doyle quote and changed the number, but really?
64 points and only 6 assist? 6 assist for the whole team!!!
That means to me that players were not passing the ball, they were not playing as a team, they let the ball stick in their hands.
6?
After the Kstate game there were a few people questioning Wiggins hustle and getting on the floor for loose balls.
For the record you don't have to dive on the floor to get a loose ball. If he dove on the floor last night it's either a jump ball or the clock expires.
He put himself in the right place to get the ball, be it either a loose ball or a rebound. He hustled in and made the play.
JoJo needs to play tonight. Be it 15 or 25 minutes. He has to get into game shape. He needs to play with his teammates at a high speed.
If not he will go into the Texas game slow and have 5 passes go off his hands.
The key is if he is feeling any pain he needs to get out asap and not 'man up' and make it worse.
@Blown In the Kstate game he was on the floor at half court and it went out of bounds on them. He was right there.
@JayHawkFanToo Im pretty sure if he did take a hit of helium his voice would get deeper.
How does a ref take him seriously when he's yelling at them?
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10436361/joel-embiid-kansas-jayhawks-miss-injuries ↗ ↗
Rest him now get him healthy for the stretch run, and is a 1 seed everything? I'll take a two seed and a rested Joel for the tournament run, over a slowed and hobbled Joel and a 1 seed any day.
I just hope that all the players support him and work hard to represent him in his absence. lIke being eligible to play night after night and not getting T'd up.
So does Cal make all these top 10 recruits sign a contract that they have to give the school 10% of their rookie contract? Or maybe to him???
It's funny that tonight will be a packed house, because when they destroyed #15 Texas last week the place might have been half full.
I have always said and will keep on saying that Rick Barnes could not coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
He has gotten away with getting a great player in Durant and used that to get others to follow, they did not pan out because they were not coached.
This years team is a bunch of past over leftovers that are using that as a reason to play hard, to play tough and as a team.
This years Texas basketball team reminds me of the '07 Kansas football team. A bunch of solid players that come together to create something great.
@JayhawkFan1954 CBSsports.com will have links to games for your computer. Some sites ask that you log on via your cable company but not all.
I know a lot of bars are going to the minimum bar tab is you want to sit in the bar all day. That way you are not just ordering an iced T and getting free refills all day. I don't blame them, I have worked in that industry and there is nothing worse than a guy that won't leave and won't spend money and is taking up a spot that someone else could spend money at.
Cable for a month might not be a bad idea, but you could try apple TV, justin.tv or maybe even google play I think it's called.
That or find a friend who will allow you to bring some food over and you can watch it there.
I vote Scott Pollard for the interviewer.
Who better?
So I saw a news story where someone went on to this web site and started a petition to have Justin Bieber deported and they already had over 120,000 signatures in about 10 days, it only takes 100,000 for the Presidents staff to have them look at it and make a statement.
So with that in mind can we start one to get Doug Gottlieb off of TV, radio and internet?
For starters he is a felon. Second he is to ignorant to be able to spew his opinion that is so one-sided that when CBS puts him on they have to have two people to rebuttal against him.
Plus this would save CBS some money and a lot of emails asking for them to fire him.
As Jaybate say, no malice intended
or is there?
@benshawks08 ISU made it tough for Joel last night. He normally guards his man in a 10 foot range from the rim, he was guarding almost 22 foot away last night. They pulled him away from the rim, but when he was close he altered a lot of shots. They took a lot of high arcing shots last night to avoid blocks, looks like they practiced shooting over a broom.
And he turned Matt Morris around on a fast break and he didn't even attempt a shot, he saw his future and passed it outside, didn't even try to draw the foul. Can you say scared?
There aren't a lot of teams with a center that plays out on the perimeter like ISU, Creighton does with Wragge, but non are real dangerous threats for the three ball. That takes Joel out of the middle, but the impressive thing is when KU switched on screens Kane couldn't drive on him, he moves his feet so well he doesn't let a guard go by him.
@ParisHawk and they both looked at the ref and said, "Who me?" with that look on their face that it should have been an offensive foul for some reason and they were more innocent that a Senators son in the blue light district.
This team isn't like other teams here at KU or one of the other 300+ NCAA Div. 1 teams.
This team does not wait for one or two players to make things happen. Look at Tharpe, he can either go for 2o or go for 7. But he will have a good assist number, he does what the team needs him to do. Wiggins is the same way, he doesn't need to score 24 every night for KU to win. He plays great D when is offense isn't clicking, he gets rebounds too. Embid causes more missed shots than being blind does. Ellis just gets it done man. Seldon has become the hustler, he goes and gets the ball when no one else does, and he is always around the ball to when KU needs him to be.
KU didn't have a lot of bench scoring last night, no need with what the starting 5 did. But then again Connor and Tarik didn't play, and Jamari had a rough night getting to the rim.
as wissoxfan83 said, I too didn't think after the SDSU game this team would be very good, I hadn't given up on them, but thought they might not finish in the top three of the Big12 after that game. But as a few family members said "trust Self" and I know I should of, but I didn't. I trust him now.
The saying "in Self we Trust" has never been more true than with this team and the change it has made since the SDSU game to now.
Also the best sign I saw in the crowd last night was a simple one, "Thats what we do"
