@brooksmd

Absolutely. There had been a lot of talk that he had an attitude/discipline problem at Memphis and many of us had concerns, but Coach Self proved to be a better judge of character than many of us,,,as usual, he had a lot more inside information than we did..

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 30, 2015 06:32 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Do they still have those? I thought they were all replaced with African Studies, self-paced, no attendance required, your-tutor-can-write-your term-paper type courses... :)

@Kip_McSmithers

First, my story was related to Nike dealing with Brazil to obtain exclusive rights to market their name in sport merchandise and had nothing to do with bidding for the next site for the World Cup. Nike did exactly the same thing I did, they hired someone to help them obtain what they wanted, in my case get a ticket amended and in Nike's case get an exclusive deal with Brazilian Soccer Association.

In the case of bidding for the next World Cup site , this is done by the National Soccer Associations of the interested countries (with the backing of their governments) which in most cases are appointed by the governments. Now, if you are going to go after the people that accepted the bribes you also need to go after the people that offered the bribes, i.e. the National Soccer Associations and Countries involved.

Now if you don't think that bribing does not take place in this country, then you have not done business here. It s not as overt as giving cash to someone but more subtle, such as contributing to political campaigns in order to be invited to bid; it is called pay to play and it happens all over. If you want an example, look at the Clinton Foundation. Sweden was having problems with the Department of State because Swedish companies were doing business with Iran in violation of the embargo; suddenly the Clinton Foundation gets a multi-million dollar donation from Swedish businesses and Bill Clinton is paid $800k to give a speech there and the problems disappear...coincidence? I think not. We are a relatively non-corrupt country but to think that it does not happen here is plain naive.

Again, while bribing is not the standard MO in this country, it is the MO in a lot of places if not in the majority of the world who looks at bribes as the cost of doing business and not as a punishable offense. Just look at our next door neighbors in Mexico and ask anyone that has done business there if they were able to complete any type of deal without the customary "mordida" or bribe. You just cannot do business there without bribes, period. So, while the investigation generates headlines here, in most of the world is big yawner. Do I agree with this way of doing business? Absolutely not; not there and not here. However, some cosmetics changes will be made and and things will change for a while and then they will go back to the way it was. Sepp Blatter, the FIFA President under whom all this took place just got re-elected in spite of all the bad publicity...doesn't this tell you a lot?

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 30, 2015 03:05 PM

@dylans

You are correct. There are several requirements that must be met in order to be eligible.

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 30, 2015 03:01 PM

Most players that are under contract and are being paid likely have a clause in their contracts that prevents them from participating in activities that could possibly cause injury. After what happened to Pacer Paul George who was lost for the season while playing for the senior USA team and the team still had to pay his $15M yearly salary, NBA teams now discourage players from playing even for the National Team and Mark Cuban has indicated that no Maverick player will be given permission to play for the USA or any other national team.

I am not sure if D-League contracts are multi-year or only season-long and depending on how they are structured, teams may or may not have the option of preventing players from playing in competition outside the League. Likewise, while college programs have no legal authority to prevent players from playing in competition outside the programs, I would not be surprised if key players are "discouraged" from participating...just an educated guess on my part based on the current trend.

BG 12 Tournament thru 2020 • May 29, 2015 10:37 PM

Some posters on Facebook were saying that KC gets the tournament because of MU...WHAT? How in the world can you be that stupid? Never mind, they are from Missouri.

The Big 12 Tournament is in KC because of KU. If KU decides that they rather have the tournament elsewhere, Kansas City, MO does not get it. Period. How do I wish they would have built the Sprint Center in Johnson County. :(

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 29, 2015 10:29 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I mentioned before that college BBall is full of quality Canadian players; no question they will be very good. However, TTBOMK, the Canadian team has not yet been announced so hard to tell which players will actually play, some players still in college might not get clearance form their schools to play and risk injury, even more so for anyone in the NBA.

I understand Hornacek and Fraschilla are the two leading candidates, although some places claim that current assistant T.J. Otzelberger could be it.

Bulls searching for new coach • May 29, 2015 05:46 PM

@DoubleDD

I posted before that LeBron promised to bring a Championship to Cleveland.Ohio and he has always been very loyal to his home state. However, once he gets a Championship, he will likely be gone either to the Knicks or the Lakers and their huge markets. Since Kobe has announced that the next season will be his last, I can see LeBron going to the Lakers and becoming the king of La La land.

As far as Hoiberg's health, the NBA schedule is twice as long as the NCAA and he has to deal with "divas" that make considerably more money than he does and have a say in decisions and also he has to deal with not only the GM but the owner(s) as well that can add to the level of stress considerably. In college he is the ultimate authority and decider and the only person he has to deal with is the AD. The level of stress in the NBA is orders of magnitude larger than college...ask Pitino and Calipari. The only advantage is that as long as the owner opens the purse strings, he can build the team he wants and don't have to depend on OAD players or go begging recruits.

Warriors or Cavaliers? • May 28, 2015 08:10 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Again, no one, not even other teams in the NBA have a shooter like Curry, so mentioning him is silly and disingenuous. GS has other players that can create their own shot and make them, KU has none (maybe Davonte) and no scheme is going to change that. KU scored well from the 3 when the other team gave room and allowed KU shooter uncontested shots. Look at teams like ISU and OU that shoot well from 3, their scheme is not to get them wide open for the shot every time, they simply scheme to give players a chance to create their own shot; essentially all ISU players can do this, a marked difference with KU.

Again. the coaching staff can work to get them shots all day long, and obviously it has, but if the players cannot create their shots or shot when guarded it will not work. The best thing KU could do is get the players to learn to create their own shot but I will guess they already do that but apparently the current crop has not caught up with that part of the game yet. Your comments, although directed at me, are still a veiled and obvious attempt to indicate...one more time... that Coach Self does not know what he is doing, cannot design an effective offensive scheme and that you oblivious know more than he does. It must really chap your arse to watch Coach Self make the big bucks coaching at an elite program while you, who knows more than he does, continue doing whatever it is that you do without the accolades Coach Self gets and venting your frustration on a sports forum with a tinny, tinny audience.

New Big12 Rule Change for Court Storming? • May 28, 2015 06:56 PM

I am not in favor of court storming and I hope at KU we never do it. However, a lowly team such as TCU beating KU could be allowed to do it when they upset a team like KU provided the do it in safe manner; hopefully it does not happen very often. Perhaps security people can ensure the visiting team, has left the court and it is safe on it way to the dressing room before fans are allowed onto the court. Yes, it takes the spontaneity but makes the process still available to the long suffering fans and much safer all around.

Warriors or Cavaliers? • May 28, 2015 06:45 PM

He took a knee to the right side of the head and his ear was bleeding but apparently it was not deemed to be a potential concussion since he was allowed back in the game without the battery of test required when a concussion is suspected.

Warriors or Cavaliers? • May 28, 2015 06:40 PM

@drgnslayr

The officiating in the NBA playoffs has been consistently inconsistent. Games can and have been called completely different and the way fouls, particularly the Ts and flagrant fouls are called boggles the mind. There is talk about having the replays being handled by a central control center that would have the final saying and bring some consistency to the reviews.

Warriors or Cavaliers? • May 28, 2015 06:33 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I have to disagree with you. With the players KU has the 3 point is truly fool's gold. Have you seen the GS shooters? They can all create their own shots and make them while essentially all of KU 3-point shooters are spot up shooters and none can really create his own shot; put a defender with 3 feet of Greene and his shot is gone; Curry, Thompson, Barbosa, Barnes and even Green can create their own shot and make it a decent percentage of the time even with defenders on their grills. Huge difference between GS and KU 3-point options...not even close.

Bulls searching for new coach • May 28, 2015 06:21 PM

The Mayor already had a front office position that prove to be too stressful for his heart condition and left the NBA for his ideal job at his Alma Mater ISU; why would he take the much more stressful NBA HC position when the front office job was too stressful already? I believe many journalist are too lazy to do proper research before starting rumors.

On a somewhat related note, looks like Love might be leaving Cleveland. ↗ Why did Cleveland sign hm without assurances that he would stay more than 1 year is beyond me

Warriors or Cavaliers? • May 28, 2015 03:40 PM

I have watched all the playoffs and I have enjoyed some of the games and teams a great deal; a lot of good defense being played for a change and Golden State is the best defensive team by far. I still don't like LeBron but I have to admit that the is the best player in the NBA. The player that I really dislike is Dwight Howard, I think he is overrated and a dirty player that got away with number of flagrant fouls that the refs refused to call in order to give the Rockets a chance; had there been another game, he would not have been eligible to play due to the accumulation of technical fouls actually called.

It should be an interesting series and it will depend on how well can Golden State contain LeBron who is still the heart and soul of the Cavaliers. I would love to see Golden State, a team that plays basketball the way many of us like, win it all.

@drgnslayr

Adidas is till the biggest gear supplier in soccer abut Nike has made huge gain in recent years; maybe this explains why.

Having said that, it looks like grandstanding by a publicity hungry Department of Justice who apparently has run out of police officer to prosecute. What we will find out is that this the way business is done in other parts of the world; do I agree with it? No, but in the majority of the world it will have little repercussion since most of the people involved are not Americans, don't reside here and the Justice Department has no jurisdiction over them. Yes, other countries will make some gestures but in the end it will be quietly resolved and in a few years it will be back to business as usual. Haven't we learned by now that we cannot impose our values or our will on other cultures?

Let me give you an example. When I occasionally get a traffic ticket, I normally go to court, have the ticket changed to anon- moving violation and the fine is doubled; the city gets twice the revenue and I don't get point in my license. A few year ago I got a (fully undeserved) speeding ticket in Harrisonville, MO, I went to court to get the ticket amended and I was asked if I was lawyer, I told them no and I was told that they will only deal with lawyers and if I wanted to get the ticket amended I would need to hire an attorney which I did and I ended up paying double the fine and the attorney's fees on top of that to get what I should have gotten in the first place. How is this not the same case with Nike hiring a firm that specializes in getting licensing. to get an exclusive deal with Brazil? They simply hired a firm to help them along in the process the same way I had to hire an attorney to get my ticket amended and I have no clue on whether he paid a "fee" to a member of traffic court in Harrisonville...maybe the Department of Justice should investigate Harrisonville. MO instead???

Just my 2 cents on the issue.

Pierce played for Doc Rivers and the Celtics so River is very familiar with "the truth."

He will need to put on some weight. I saw Tyshawn at a book signing in Overland Park and I was shocked on how skinny he was.

So are we done? • May 26, 2015 05:14 AM

The legend of Thon is much better than the reality. He was over hyped based on one highlight video and then he was exposed playing against top competition. His "team" which makes the Keystone cops look competent is now in full dam,age control and making things worse with every comment they make. To me Thon Maker is like ribs, good taste but way too much work for very little actual meat.

Wiggins and James, 01/31/2015 • May 26, 2015 04:58 AM

Isn't this the third incident for Dellavedova in the last few games? One is accidental, two is coincidence but three is a trend.

@REHawk

I am not sure I follow what the legal case would be. The NCAA was doing what it is supposed to do to ensure a level playing field, so it has no liability that I can see. KU stopped playing him as soon as it was informed of the issue; Coach Self has the undisputed authority to play or sit a player as he sees fit without any explanation, so no liability there...

Warriors vs Rockets, game 3 • May 24, 2015 06:18 PM

Interesting fact, the top 5 players with the most playing minutes are all 6'8" or less; not exactly a tall team.

@DoubleDD

I have read that UNC academic accreditation is being reviewed; if they lose that most students would transfer. A much bigger blow than anything the NCAA cold ever inflict.

Paschal • May 24, 2015 06:05 PM

Like Wiggins, he is not American... :) :) :)

@DoubleDD

If I understand correctly, the NCAA makes very little money from College Football since the Bowls are negotiated between conferences and sponsors with little NCAA intervention and all television contracts are between conferences/school and networks. The bulk of the money comes from March Madness TV contract with CBS/Turner ($10.4B over 14 years) which the NCAA controls an takes the lion's share of the money or app. 84% of it total revenue

Driving I-70 Eastbound to land of Ahhhh's • May 23, 2015 06:30 PM

The Global warming has not been a scientific issue for a while now (at least for unbiased scientists) since most of the methodology used to produce the original "hockey stick" curve has been fully discredited. The main author of the original paper/curve, Michael Mann, has claimed the methodology used to develop the curve is "intellectual property" and refuses to disclose the detail, something that is unheard and unacceptable in scientific circles.

We are just beginning to understand solar flares and solar storms and their occurrence seems to closely correspond to cyclic warming; a lot better than man made CO2, the current favorite of the "man is the cause of global warming" crowd.

Global warming is purely a political issue that many politicians, such as Al Gore, have used to try to stay relevant and more importantly, to make a lot of money. As an Engineer/Scientist, I deal with a number of other scientists, many in agencies that deal directly with the issue, such as NASA, for whom I have done work in the space shuttle program since the late 80's, I can tell you that at least 95% of them feel the same way I do. Global warming has been happening cyclically through hundreds of thousand of years and I have an objection that the current period of warming is the result of human action alone. Humans contribute minimally and have zero control over global warming

Read this linked article ↗ that outlines the entire process and draw your own conclusions. I don't want to get in an argument over this issue since, IMHO, it is political issue and this is not the forum for it. I don't claim my opinion is correct, since no one really knows the answer with full certainty, the comments above are my opinion based on my own experience and interaction with other, much more knowledgeable scientists. Like I said, do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

WUG - Pluses and Minuses... • May 21, 2015 02:22 PM

@ParisHawk

The NCAA does not have jurisdiction over the WUG. A transfer that would be required to sit one year by the NCAA could play in the WUG as long as he is enrolled in college...any college.

Cliff and Frank the Tank • May 21, 2015 02:18 PM

@ralster

Spot on. Cliff really cannot blame anyone for his problem except himself and his family; on the other hand, none of us really know what transpires behind closed doors that we don't know and we can speculate. I seem to recall being pretty immature at that age myself and I did not have to face the decision he had to face,

Maybe Coach Self should set up a gallery of players that left too early as a reminder to other players to be patient; of course Selby and Alexander would be the initial members in that gallery.

CONGRATS TO DR. TYREL REED. • May 20, 2015 08:38 PM

@drgnslayr

If the image is not copyrighted by KU or the NCAA, I don't see why he couldn't use it. He is out of college so he does not need to maintain eligibility and he can profit from his image as much as he wants.

WUG - Pluses and Minuses... • May 20, 2015 08:35 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Maybe they can take SZ and leave him there. The longer he is away from Campus the less damage he can do like signing stupid contracts.

WUG - Pluses and Minuses... • May 20, 2015 08:33 PM

@REHawk

Player-wise and TTBOMK, KU can take 12 active players and 2 that will act as managers and which at this time are Svi and Diallo. I am not sure on the number of support personal such as coaches and trainers, but anyone else can go provided the pay their own way. I am sure Coach Self would pay for Tyler and I will guess his wife will be going as well.

@BeddieKU23

Again, you have to take the comments in context. If you are a GM, would you tell Ford what your real priorities are so other team can be made aware of that? I think not. Who a NBA team is interested in or will try to draft (other than the obvious top 2-3) are very closely guarded secrets that NBA teams do not discuss with reporters.

WUG - Pluses and Minuses... • May 20, 2015 05:43 PM

@drgnslayr

The player or players that KU "borrows" from other teams for the WUG do not count as scholarships so they are completely independent of recruiting and available scholarships.

Cliff and Frank the Tank • May 19, 2015 02:29 PM

@Statmachine

Oubre left KU universally projected between #8 and #12, which is probably pretty darn good considering he was ranked between #6 and #10 out of HS if I recall correctly. A drop in the draft projection will have happened based on what he did after leaving KU and it would be hard to blame HC Self for this.

Alexander has no one to blame but himself and his family for his current problems. I believe just about everybody in this Forum, after watching him play for a while, thought he needed at least an additional year and maybe even two. The reason he opted for the draft, way before he was ready, cannot be attributed to HC Self. He is still very young and apparent;y immature and he is lashing out in frustration; once he grows up some he probably will change his tune...or at least I hope we will.

@BeddieKU23

You have to be careful when looking at drat projections. Much like Lunardi is to Bracketology, Chad Ford is to the draft, an average (at best) projection ranking with the huge audience of ESPN. There are many draft prediction services and rankings out there with a much better track record than Chad Ford. I try to follow these projection but it has been pretty busy at work and I have not looked at the other draft projections. Maybe, if you have the time, you can look at some of the other projection and see where Oubre stands.

Vick commits • May 18, 2015 04:04 PM

One thing to remember is that the NBA requires players to be one year removed from their graduating classes, in addition to being 19, in order to be eligible for the draft. The new trend seems to be to reclassify, even if they have no intention of playing college basketball, so they meet the "one year removed" rule and are elegible to be drafted. The talk is that this is exactly what Thon Maker is doing, reclassifying, going back to prep school for an extra year and then jumping to the NBA skipping college altogether.

Cliff and Frank the Tank • May 18, 2015 03:54 PM

@HighEliteMajor

HEM, you are stating your opinion as fact. Tharpe played because there was no one else with experience that could replace him or that would be an improvement. As far as Ellis, It is just YOUR opinion that he was "pretty darn bad." While not an outstanding defender, he was far from "pretty darn bad" and he never looked lost in the court like Cliff was, I believe most members would agree that Ellis was not "pretty darn bad." As far as Traylor, you have made it crystal clear that you don't like him, don't think much of his skills and believe he should not be playing Division I basketball...but he does...and Coach Self obviously does too, and he start for an Elite program...and many -if not most of us- believe that while not a star, he is a very serviceable player than on several occasions has saved the team behind and been the best player on the court for KU. Again, this is just my personal opinion.

@wissoxfan83

He would be on the team with a full scholarship but would have to sit one year. Maybe this is what they meant that he would be part of the team; notice how they refer to him as a potential replacement for Perry afire he leaves.

@Lulufulu

Look at all the good 3 point shooters in the NBA and with few exceptions they can all do the same thing; this is why they are so difficult to defend. Have a player guard Greene closely and he is ineffective.

Cliff and Frank the Tank • May 17, 2015 07:23 PM

@wissoxfan83

The story did not address defense and how often Cliff would lose the player he was covering and how he did not know how to provide weak side help in defense. As you know, if you don't play defense, you don't get playing time at KU.

@Lulufulu

Absolutely. Some people seem to miss his point.

@wissoxfan83

He would have to sit one year like everybody transferring does; however, he would be eligible to play at the WUG, since he does not need clearance from the NCAA for this.
