@KUSTEVE

I can see Ellis playing the 3, Bragg the 4 and Diallo the 5 spots; a very mobile, quick and athletic lineup that could give opponents fits. If Ellis can maintain a decent shooting percentage from the 3, I can see him getting substantial minutes at the 3.

No more softball • Jun 07, 2015 06:23 PM

@Lulufulu

Wasn't he the MVP at two All-Star games? I see a lot of good thing in Diallo and overall I belive he will have a bigger impact at KU (barring injury, of course) than Embiid did, mostly because Embiid's productive period was short since he got injured shortly after he really started producing.

@Statmachine

That would constitute improper benefits.

@HawkInMizery

That is indeed the case and Kansas is not the only state that does that, California heaps lots of financial aid on top of that. Like I said...lunacy.

Correct, however, his re-election was a message that most of the world does not care. He is staying until a new president is elected sometime in November-December and I would not be surprised if he runs again and is re-elected.

The FIFA president that oversaw the whole thing just got re-elected...

A "small" guard? We don't want a ":small" guard...maybe a "shooting" guard???

just kidding...:)

@Crimsonorblue22

Way too much rain if you ask me...only 3 days with no rain in May in the KC Area.

@wrwlumpy

As a walk-on PG, he is really not at all affected by Chuckwu. I would like to think that coming to KU he knew his chances of getting substantial playing time we extremely small and he would be in the same situation as Manning ad Self who want to be part of an elite team, know they will play mostly in practice and have no pro-playing aspirations once they are done with college. Maybe he does want to get more playing time and knows he will not get it at KU.

Recruiting targets • Jun 05, 2015 03:56 PM

@clevelandjayhawk

Spot on. It all a question of timing and need. TRob did not play much as a Freshman and he was an absolute monster as Junior.

Recruiting targets • Jun 05, 2015 03:48 PM

@Statmachine

The chances of Mason making it to the League are very small. NBA teams are looking for tall PGs and Mason is under 6', probably closer to 5'-10". If he goes to the league it will be as a "walk-on" and not as a drafted player, so the chances of Mason leaving early are very small.

@jaybate-1.0

The Richmond game was not an issue and KU won by 20 points; Morningstar was the only player that played more than 30 minutes (32), 4 bench players played double minutes.

The VCU game was one of KU's worse shooting efforts ever:

  • FG: 22-62 (35.5%)
  • 3 points: 2-21 (9.5%)
  • FT: 15-28 (53.6%)

Can you think of a game with worse numbers?

@JayhawkRock78

Well...I don't believe the loss to VCU was due to his system as much as KU going frigid from the field; maybe looking past VCU and not concentrating on the game at hand?

whats up with Vick? • Jun 05, 2015 04:21 AM

@DoubleDD

I don't necessarily disagree with you but at this point I don't see a lot of difference between Coleby and Chuckwu...maybe we can call them Colby Cheese and Chucky Cheese. I for one don't get too hung up on whether a player is 6-9 or 7-0, The two most productive bigs KU has had in the Self era, TRob and Simien were both 6-9 (or less) and I would take either one over Chuckwu or most every other 7 footer. Based on what he has shown to date, a productive Chuckwu would be a bonus but not a player I would rely on.

@jaybate-1.0

The Obannon ruling indicated that schools must pay for all the athlete expenses (which KU already does) and also ruled that college be permitted to place as much as $5,000 into a trust for each athlete per year of eligibility if his image or likeness is used to generate money, so no immediate money.

The verdict is being appealed and it might be years before it can be enforced...provided it prevails though all the appeals.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 05, 2015 12:44 AM

@HighEliteMajor

First, I stated before that I would not second guess Coach Self when it comes to coaching basketball. Why would I second guess one one the more successful college basketball coaches ever in matters of basketball, when in the words of one Robert Montgomery Knight, he has probably forgotten more about basketball that I will ever know? After all this is what he does for a living...and he does it superbly...and for me is not even a hobby. Unlike you, I am not arrogant and vain enough to think that I know more than he does and I am better qualified than he is.

Again, There were several issues that warranted Tharpe to be dismissed from the team for cause and pretty much everybody in this forum agreed at the time that it was the right thing to do...are you actually suggesting that he should have kept Tharpe on the team, despite all the issues and continue to be cancer on the team? Apparently you are because the real reason does not fit your narrative and gives you an opportunity to question Coach Self's character. So transparent and predictable.

Your "go to" line is to accuse posters, particularly yours truly, of having zero credibility and not being objective...isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? At least I have the integrity to say that I like and trust Coach Self; you, on the other hand, profess to like and respect Coach Self while constantly criticizing every coaching decision he makes. I might not be unbiased but at least I am not a hypocrite.

Nice try but no cigar...you should really try this site ↗ and come back when they stop laughing.

whats up with Vick? • Jun 04, 2015 11:41 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Again, height alone does not make great player. Our last win last year was against New Mexico State that has Tanveer Bhullar, a 7-3 Canadian Center that even HEM would play way, way behind Traylor :). At this point Chuckwu is 7 feet of potential and by no means a proven commodity...maybe Coach Self saw more potential on 6-9 Coleby. Just sayin'

@jaybate-1.0

Don't forget that Vacarro was a very successful marketing executive at Nike (amongst others) and signed Michael Jordan to his first sneaker contract.

@dylans

He/she was born a couple of days ago and was named Caitlin Jenner...:)

whats up with Vick? • Jun 04, 2015 11:09 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Might “near footer” account for slight amounts under and over 7 feet?

Where do you draw the line? 6-10?, 6-11? how about a very athletic 6-9 that can out jump and out rebound a true 7 footer? You seem to be too fixated on the height and not enough on the talent. Let's remember that Chuckwu was a role player at Providence, not an elite major program but Providence, where he was #9 in the team in minutes per game....the textbook definition of role player. He might have potential, but at this time and based on his first season he is a project that might or might not pan out. Let's not anoint Chuckwu as the next Embiid or the savior of the Hi-Lo.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 04, 2015 10:54 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Again, the difference in this issue is that you don't feel Self is an individual of "high moral character" and I do, and I suspect the majority of posters in this forum would agree with me on this issue....but then, you don't believe Self is good coach either so at least you are consistent.

The part that you are not considering is that if he runs a student to another school before his senior year, that student would have to stay at that school at least 2 years to earn enough in-residence credits to graduate. If coach Self or any other coach does that, he would not only likely ruin the athletic part but more importantly, it would extend that individual academic stay by one year before he can get his degree. Frankly I don't see Self, or any other coach for that matter, doing this without a justification beyond making room. As I mentioned before, when Niang was injured before his senior year and he could not play, he was given an student-assistant position to allow him to stay and complete his degree. I am sure you can find example somewhere but I cannot think of single player that was run from any program just before his senior year, without cause, and just to make room for a better player; it would highly unethical and extremely unfair to the player. Maybe you can cite some examples of seniors-to-be that were run from programs without cause.

Do you honestly believe that Tharpe was called out of the blue and told that he was being dismissed from the program? I would thing that he was given ample warning and then given a way to save face. If you recall, when it was announced, Tharpe indicated that he had already been in touch with other schools including UMass about transferring there.

FYI and as per KU Offcial Athletic web site, the team had 15 players on the roster last season and 4, Self, Manning, Pollard and Garret were considered walk-on, which means only 11 scholarships were hard- commits, including late signinings Graham and Svi, so Tharpe was not dismissed just to make room for Graham, in fact, 2 of the scholarships were given to walk-ons. So much for your theory...

I find it cynical, although not necessarily surprising given your stated dislike, that you would think so little of Coach Self to imply he would stoop to that. Oh well, to each his own. We are obviously 180 degrees apart on this issue so no sense in discussing it any further; I will not change my mind and I suspect you will not either.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 04, 2015 08:26 PM

@HighEliteMajor

You mentioned some of the issues and don't forget that he was also suspended the first game of the season for playing an unauthorized game in the off-season while visiting Jamari in Chicago (Jamari himself did not play in that game); no other player at KU had done this before or since, so it appears to be a well known rule. The selfie alone warranted dismissal IMHO.

Other than Tharpe, were you able to find any other senior to be that was "driven" from the program before his last year? I really don't think it is in Coach Self's nature to do something like this and other than Tharpes's justified "dismissal" I see no precedent.

@BeddieKU23

Thanks. Good info.

@wrwlumpy

Even the very best academic scholarship does not cover what an athletic scholarship does.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 04, 2015 03:56 PM

@HighEliteMajor

You cannot possibly say that Tharpe was a typical Junior/Senior-to-be. He had several disciplinary issues that warranted his outright dismissal from the team and they simply took the diplomatic route of saying that he wanted to get closer to his ill daughter, a move made so not to poison the well, if you will, with other potential schools/destinations. If you read @ralster comments from the BBall camp and if I recall correctly, HC Self pretty much said that much. The only other senior that I can recall leaving the team was Mulaye Niang who was injured and no longer able to play and he was made an student assistant and not sent packing.

I am sure you know that most if not all schools require that a student completes at least half of the credit in residence at that school in order to get a degree; a junior that transfer to another school would have to be at that school at least 2 years in order to get a degree...otherwise, everybody would transfer to Harvard or MIT or CalTech for their senior year and get a degree from there.

So much for that,,,

@BeddieKU23

The two names I mentioned are Hornacek, currently coaching the Suns, and Fraschilla. The Suns missed the playoffs and many fans are not happy with that. If Thibodeau can be fired after the season the Bulls had, then just about any other coach is in jeopardy as well.

@ParisHawk

...or any player could say he is an "undocumented" student; Kansas allows "undocumented" students to pay in-date tuition ↗...talk about lunacy.

I am having problems with the unread threads. After I read the posts in a thread and go back to "unread" the thread still shows there and the "unread" list/icon does not seem to be updating.
Also, if I leave the site open for while I get Fire Fox messages about "unresponsive scripts.' I use Fire Fox uniquely for this site so I don't have any other tabs open.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 04, 2015 08:30 AM

@ParisHawk

I am with you 100%. I would be surprised, shocked actually, if Coach Self release any of the seniors to be (or any other player) without allowing them to graduate.

@Crimsonorblue22

Spot on. How many of us at age 18 or 19 would have made a better decision? Sometime we lose track that these are just kids barely out of high school.

Okay Charlie Brown, hit it! • Jun 04, 2015 08:11 AM

@sfbahawk

it would depend on how many credit he needs to graduate. if he need a course or two, he could easily fit that in the Summer session, play for KU in the WUG, graduate and then transfer elsewhere. I am sure Coach Self with the contact he has could easily find a school for him and I am sure they would be lots of schools interested in a big man that can contribute immediately.

Frankly, I have not seen any reports that indicate how close (or far) he is from graduation; perhaps you have a soucre with this information?

whats up with Vick? • Jun 04, 2015 07:58 AM

Withey was measured at the pre-draft combine at 6' 10- 3/4" so technically he is not a footer.

Bulls searching for new coach • Jun 02, 2015 03:54 PM

@dylans

I respectfully disagree with you. the NBA HC position, IMHO, is "considerably" (rather than marginally) more stressful and physically demanding than a college HC position.

whats up with Vick? • Jun 02, 2015 03:48 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Why would he visit Iona? Any player with NBA aspirations would be crazy to go to Iona instead of one of the major programs. Yes, he would likely get more playing time but if you are not confident that you can become a starter at a major program, chances are you are not NBA material anyway, in which case why waste time recruiting him. I will guess that the Iona trip is a favor to a friend or recruiter and not really a likely destination, although this just a guess on my part.

whats up with Vick? • Jun 02, 2015 03:44 PM

@drgnslayr

A letter of Intent binds the players to the school and he would need a release to play elsewhere. The grant-in-aid without a letter of intend bind the school but not the player; remember that is how Xavier Henry was able to leave UK and come to KU?

A player could also get financial aid based on need but not necessarily get an athletic scholarship; however, the amount and benefits are not even close to those of an athletic scholarship. It is possible that a transfer that will have to sit one year does not get the full benefit of a scholarship in the year he sits and gets only financial aid based on need.

At leas that is my understanding of how this things work and I could be wrong.

Bulls searching for new coach • Jun 02, 2015 07:11 AM

@dylans

Some BA office positions such a GM can be extremely stressful as the individual has to deal with huge financial issues as well as manage the personalities and egos of owners, coaches and players.

As far as coaching itself. the college season even with post season rarely gets to 40 games, the NBA season, in the other hand, is 82 games that with playoffs can extend to over 100 games. When you consider that NBA games are 48 minutes or 20% longer than college games, 100 NBA games is the equivalent of 120 college games or 3 time as many. Also, in college the HC has absolute power over what goes on with program; in the NBA the star players make considerably more than the coach, have egos to match their salaries and in many case have lot more say in personnel decision than the coach has. The NBA HC job is considerably more stressful than the college HC job; it is not even close.

@sfbahawk

I agree that politics should be avoided in the forum. However, in this particular case politics and sports are intimately intertwined; you really cannot discuss this topic without discussing the politics driving it. Just my opinion.

Bulls searching for new coach • May 31, 2015 05:35 AM

@JayhawkRock78

Many of us thought that it was unlikely that he would go back to the NBA, to a more stressful position than the one he left due to health issues and stress...go figure.

If he indeed goes to the NBA it will be a big loss for the conference. Of course if Hornacek goes back to ISU it will definitely offset the loss. There are fans in Phoenix not happy that the Suns missed the playoffs, so his position there is not necessarily secure.

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 31, 2015 05:17 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I was not implying that we have something like this at KU. In fact, the Athletic Department has a program in place that uses volunteers (mostly retired people) that check attendance of every student athlete and if one misses a class, the AD is informed immediately.

@HawksWin

You obviously know how business is conducted in other parts of the world and it is quite different than what we are used to here. Now, do you think the DOJ will side with Adidas, a German firm, against Nike, the All-American firm? Keep in mind that Germany and the US are not exactly going through a good period in their relations after the US was accused of spying on German Chancellor Merkel.

Canadian Team Presents a Real Test • May 30, 2015 11:47 PM

I bet a lot of colleges have similar programs. I always wonder what job exactly do African Studies Programs prepares students for...teach African Studies?
