instead of farting around with changes, why not just adopt the International (FIBA) rules that are much closer to the NBA rules and they are what the rest of the world uses anyway? They address most of the current concerns and place American team in an equal footing in international competition, instead of having to learn the international rules. The only FIBA rule I don't care for is the basketball interference over the rim and I prefer the NBA/College version, but I can learn to live with that.
The Warriors have two of the top 3-5 best 3-point shooters in the NBA. They can not only create their own shot but when the get the ball they can shoot in a blink of an eye; KU does not have anyone even close to that and most if not all of KU's 3-point shooters are spot up shooters, and teams that guard them closely on the outside will negate KU's 3-point shooting, as we saw last season. So, yes, Golden State can go with shorter line up because in addition of Curry and Thompson, they also have Uguadolas and Barbosa who are pretty capable outside shooters as well. Golden State can rely on its outside shooting, KU cannot.
"I'm not (a bad) guy," Alexander said. "I'm a great guy to be around. When I was at Kansas, it was just a struggle. I got dealt a bad deck of cards, that's all it was."
Pretty hard for a young man desperately trying to keep up with teammates with a much better BBall IQ and then your own mother deals you not an Ace but Joker instead. Hopefully Cliff can get it together long enough to get a spot in a NBA team where he can develop the skills he really should have developed in second (or third) year in college.
It is not the first time the family (or "friends") of a talented athlete has tried to milk the potential before it is ready with abysmal results and likely will not be the last. I wonder if school, such as KU, that have been hurt by these so called agents, that make "loans" that end up disqualifying the "third" party, can join together and start a class action suit against them.
At WSU he is the big fish, at KU he would have much more exposure but not nearly as much playing time. He would be great for the WUG though.
I forgot he red-shirted his freshman year so he has been at WSU 4 years. I will guess that WSU would not give him a release to play at KU.
Wouldn't it be nice if Ron Baker suddenly graduates, transfers to KU and is immediately available to play for one year?
Mason particularly and Graham have developed to the point that I personally find it unlikely than any OAD, short of a Wiggins-like prospect, would replace them; they will also have experience which Coach Self values highly.
As far as Frankamp, there were other, much larger issues than playing time that forced Frankamp to leave KU. Some Forum members are familiar with the particulars but this is as much as I will say.
Both play at WSU but Ron Baker is much, much better and more experienced than Conner Frankamp...and has no baggage like Conner does.
Oh...you are not very nice... :)
It is a question of perspective.
Have you ever seen an ice skating compulsory figure competition where skaters make passes in various figures and the judges measure the distance between the tracks of the various passes? For purists, this is the most exiting part of the competition where for most fans it is like watching buns rise.
How about Equestrian dressage (my dad used to compete in his younger years) where riders just ride the horse starting and stopping and just changing pace and cadence? Most fans just want to see horse jumping over obstacles, but to purists, dressage is the be all, end all of equestrian events.
Both of the events I mentioned above make watching grass grow look like an action sport to the average fan, but the purists, they are the ultimate skill competitions.
Likewise, to most of us members of this forum varying from somewhat-to-very knowledgeable in the sport, a good defense is every bit as good as a good offense, but to the average fan, defense is boring and high flying offenses are exciting. Unfortunately, there are a heck more "average" than there are knowledgeable fans that appreciate the craft and the sport is tailored to the lowest common denominator and thus an exciting offense will always trump an exciting defense and hence the game will be adjusted to favor exciting offenses. Low scoring games are considered "boring" and high scoring games are "exciting," and all the changes to the sport in recent memory have been made to favor offense and higher scoring. It is really that simple.
Ron Baker would be an interesting choice. Very capable Kansan player that gets to play for the team he always wanted to play...and he plays the right/needed position and unlikely to ever play against KU again.. It would throw a huge olive branch to the feud but I am not sure how Marshall would react and if he would try to use it against KU or even allow him to play in the WUG team in the first place.
Well...you are the top ranked poster at KUBUCKETS...that makes you a legend in the Forum... :)
I hope our girls spank their girls..
The game will be streamed at 3:00 PM via the SEC/ESPN Network, for any one interested although it is currently on rain delay.
The 23 ranked KU softball team beat Louisville 1-0 earlier this afternoon and plays MU tomorrow at 2:30 PM in the NCAA Tournament.
Best of luck to the KU girls!!!
I guess there are successful sports at KU other than Men's basketball...who would've thunk it. :)
I wish sports reporters would do their due diligence and remember that Hoiberg has a heart condition for which he recently had additional surgery and it is the reason why he left his NBA front office job in the first place. I just cannot imagine his doctor telling him...sure go back to the high stress NBA to a job that is considerably more stressful than the one you originally had and to a season that is twice as long as the college season. I just can't see him doing that, his wife and kids will probably set him straight...of course I could be all wrong.
The full court press works best against team with average or poor PG such as those in the smaller conferences The major conferences tend to have quality PGs and the 40 minutes of hell does not work as well unless they are caught unprepared. There is a reason you just don't see that in the NBA, the PGS are just too good. Smart will have to come up with a new gimmick.
I believe this poll is designed to give the squid cover by lowering the expectations for UK and it is quite different than any other I have seen. Closer to home, it has KU, ISU, OU and adds WVU to the top 25 and leaves out Texas and Baylor which most other polls have them in the top 25. Turgeon and Maryland are getting way too much love; they will be good, but #2? I don't think so.
I personally think that at at this time KU is a legitimate top 10 and borderline top 5, but certainly not #1...at least not yet...
Congrats to Tyrel, one of the many true student-athletes that have made KU proud.
Too bad the game is January 30th; I would have preferred a much earlier date when KU was ready and UK not so much...kind of like last year.
Nope. Wizards are down 3-2. If not for a lapse in the last few seconds Wizards would have won with a shot from Pierce.
If I understate correctly, technically if you want to transfer, even with the 1 year wait, you need to get a release from your current team. This is one of those thing that are currently being mentioned as being grossly unfair, particularly when scholarships are binding for only one year. Many coaches will limit where you can transfer and if you remember, Bo Ryan had huge dose of bad press when he places large number of school in the list of non-approved schools for a player wanting to transfer a couple of years ago. I seem to recall that the Big 12 has a 2 year wait (conference rule) when transferring within the conference; maybe someone can verify this?
I personally would not want anyone that played at MU coming to KU.
Larry Brown's stay at KU was too short lived to be in the company of the other coaches and, IMHO, the title is one of those, much like UConn last year, that was more of a fluke than anything else. Coach Williams overall record at KU is much better than Coach Brown's. Unfortunately the younger generations do not have the drive that ours has to look way back into the past and 20-30 years is as far back as it goes and for most, even less than that. The majority (did not say all) of KU fans under 40 know next to nothing about Phog Allen and the extent of the knowledge is that he was former coach after whom the Field house is named. I would venture to guess that half of all KU fans do not know who Wilt was and that he played for KU...same thing with Larry Brown. You have to consider that the members of this forum are what I would say are in the 99.9% in knowledge about KU. The great majority of fans follow the team and the current season but cannot name a player gone for more than 5 years...not every body is as dedicated or knowledgeable as the group posting here and realistically even here, how many member do we have that have more than 100 posts in KUBUCKETS? Would it surprise you that is less than 60? We are not by any means typical fans, were are a tinny group and pretty much the exception.
UK has the #2 ranked class and it also brings back several good players; it is ranked top 5 in just about every ranking I have seen. KU should win but it will not be an easy game by any means.
I believe there was fake Twitter account that listed UK and Indiana as his final two schools (post with school shirts) but I understand that has been corrected and the original four, KU, ASU, IU and UK are still it. Keep in mind that Indiana offered to his younger brother Matur Maker as well...no news on what his handler "Rain" Maker thinks. :)
As time passes old Roy Williams will be just a footnote.
I strongly disagree. At UNC he already has as many National Titles as Dean Smith does in one third of the time...and he is favorite for the upcoming season. You have to keep in mind that much like the younger KU fans, not too many of the younger UNC fans remember Dean Smith in the same way that many if not most KU fans, I am not talking about the rabid, die-hard fans, but the more casual, younger fans, do not have a clue of who Phog Allen was....other than the name on the Field house. The attention span seems to be the last 20-30 years, any thing before that is largely unknown or ignored. If Roy Williams stays at UNC for another 10 years, there is no question he will be the most successful coach there. The only thing that could derail this plan is if the academic scandal reaches him and he is force to leave in the near future.
By virtue of his amazing conference streak and overall record plus one National Championship, Coach Self will be the top coach at KU for the foreseeable future but Coach William will be second.
IMHO, he will not be just a footnote in either program and I guess on this we just agree to disagree.
Please note that I did not mention the term Elite in reference to ISU; you have to be at or near the top a lot longer to be in that category. My comments were specifically related to the upcoming season and the team ISU will field and there is no question in my mind that they will be good, real good. Now, will they be good enough to dethrone KU? I don't know but I don't think so and to a large extent it will depend on how well Diallo and Bragg progress and jell with the rest of the team, more so than on how well ISU does...I am cautiously optimistic. With Baylor, OU and Texas also being loaded, the Big 12 will once again be the toughest conference; I believe it is the only conference with 5 teams ranked i the top 20-25 in most pre-season rankings.
Sadly OLD HCRW becomes nothing more than a foot note in the history of UNC an KU basketbal
There is no way he will just be a footnote in the history of either school. He is second only to Dean Smith in number of wins at UN, has the best winning % of any coach with at least 100 games...plus 2 National Championships. At KU, he is arguably the second most successful coach behind Bill Self, and has the second most wins (418) after Phog Allen (590) who coached at KY for 39 years compared to Williams 15 years.
I honestly believe that we all knew that Roy Williams would eventually return to UNC, and it was not a mater of if but when. I agree that the way it went down was not good but for this the blame falls entirely on Dean Smith, a former KU player and coach, who really should have done better for his Alma Mater and not really on Roy Williams.
Kelly Oubre will definitely be a Lottery pick. Best case #7 worst case #13, most likely case #10.
Alexander will be picked solely based on potential and not on what he showed on the court last season. Best case early 20s, worst case second round, most likely case late first round/early second round.
I will have to disagree with some of the members on this issue.
There is no question that ISU is a program in the rise and Hoiberg is quickly becoming one of the better coaches in College Basketball.
Yes, ISU is ranked high and it might not make the Final Four, but how many time is the last 10 years KU has been ranked in the top 5-10 and did not make it even to the Elite 8? Just because "WE" don't believe ISU will make it that far does not mean they are not deserving of being ranked high. They do have the bulk of their team coming back and have the least questions of any conference team. Obviously KU has a much higher ceiling but we also have some questions...remember last season when we thought Alexander would be the answer to a lot of our problems? How well did that turn out? Like they say, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Keep in mind that ISU beat KU 2 out of 3 last season...yes, some might say we gave the game away but the same can be said about just about any close game...remember the '08 Memphis game? Many if not most would say that Memphis gave the game away by missing so many free throws, but who remembers that? No one except Memphis fans. In the last 2 years KU is 3-3 against ISU. There is no question they have improved and you can ignore that improvement at your own risk; I can guarantee you that Coach Self will not underestimate ISU.
I am at all not saying that ISU will win the conference, OU and UT should also be strong but UT has big questions, starting with the coach, and I have learned that in the same way you don't underestimate your opponents, namely ISU, you do it even less so with Coach Self....Vegas says never bet against the streak.
I am not saying let's anoint ISU as the next powerhouse program, but let's not dismiss it so cavalierly either.
There is a large number of very good Canadian players playing college BBall in the US.
Kraftwerk? there is a name from the past; I still have the Autobahn LP...Great music, pretty unique and maybe ahead of its time,
Of course you realize I meant he could come back and play at the WUG.........for Canada, of course, right? :)
I did not know that women ever did anything wrong...or so I am told by the women in my life...:)
All the projection have Thon Maker as a strong KU lean; however, I just don't see Coach Self taking him for just one semester. Amazing how all the Thon talk has basically vanished.
As far as Papagiannis, it would appear that he will be playing in Greece for money while getting ready for the NBA...maybe he will join the Vegas team... :)
Puerto Rico is an Associated State and people born in Puerto Rico are considered natural-born U.S. citizens
Oops...:(
As long as they meet the requirement they can; however, no NBA team is likely to agree to have player under contract risk injury at the WUG. Young plays in the Canadian League and if he has a contract in place, there is a good chance his team would not allow hm to play anyway. If you recall, there was talk of having Wiggins come back but I just don't see an u scenario where the Wolves would allow that.
I will guess that most of the players from other countries have played for the under-XX teams of their countries in the past; Svi has played for the Senior Ukrainian team and if his country would have qualified for the WUG he certainly would be playing. If NBA players can play I just don't see how having played for the National team from Puerto Rico would be an issue. Juts my guess and I could be wrong.
Highlight videos are just that...highlight videos. After Thon Maker's highlight video was released, he looked like the second coming of Olajuwon and Jabbar combined...how did it work out for him? After the Nike Hops Summit nobody is talking about him. Svi's highlight video shows the best plays over a number of games but it does not show all the shots he missed; like I said, a good way to see potential and athleticism but not a good way to evaluate a player in his entirety.
If you want evaluate a players, look at his overall stats and not the highlight reel. I have followed Svi in International competition and there is no question that he has incredible talent; however, I am not sold on the 3 gun. if you look at his 3-point shooting numbers you we will see that much like KU last season, he is consistently inconsistent. he might shoot 0.400 or better one game and 0.200 or worse the next. One thing he might have going for him is that in Internationale competition the 3 point line is farther away than in college. Until I see him shoot consistently from the 3, I will not count him as an outside shooter but more as a mid-range shooter and also a tall player than can penetrate.
Smart has not won a single regular season championship in his entire career. He did not win one while in the weak Colonial Conference and he did not win one while in the A-10 either. He is like the Kardashians, he is famous for being famous and not necessarily for his record.
If there is cell phone reception then you can turn your phone into a "hot spot" and presto, you have internet. Yes, there is a cost involved but them, all good things in life usually cost...
I have been preaching for while now that Perry needs to be playing some 3 since that is the position he will play in the NBA...and his is his last year. You are absolutely correct that if Diallo and Bragg click together, I can see Perry playing the 3 since he is too valuable not to have in the game. Not having to guard much bigger players, he can be absolutely deadly again other similar size 3s.
I agree. Given the choice, I much rather have Kevin Young than Cliff Alexander; that is a no brainer for me...
His birthday is June 24, 1990, so it seems he would be legible...
Sorry, a little before my time and since I am older than most posters here, likely very few have heard of Jack Mitchell. Gill and Weiss, on the other hand, are pretty recent and likely everybody is familiar with them and the multimillion contracts KU is still paying.
There probably will be lots of Internet streams readily available if you have Internet access, which with cell phones and wi-fi is almost universally available.
Texas is doing what KU did in football, guarantee contracts for unproven results that end up costing a lot of long term money. I personally think Smart is overrated, but he seems to have a lot of fans.
Tarik was lucky that he went to a team that badly needed a player like him; remember that he was waived by Houston to make room for Josh Smith and now he is being looked as starter for the Lakers ↗next season.
Same thing with Trob. When given a chance he has played well but he had the misfortune to go to teams that had several players ahead of him; hopefully Philly will be the place where he can get a real chance. Xavier Henry finally found place with the Lakers only to have injuries derail his plan one more time. Withey could also do well in the right team and has played well when asked but he plays behind players with bigger contracts that the Pelican need to justify, so he does not get as much playing time.
