Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 16, 2014 11:34 PM

On football related notes...how long before Muschamp (leaving Florida at the end of the season) becomes a candidate for the KU HC job?

Also, former MU player Chase Coffman fined $30K for hit on Raven's Assistant Coach...

Coffman fined... ↗

Only a former MU player would do something so stupid. The article has a link to the video of the hit.

Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 16, 2014 10:32 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

They are both away games with teams vying for major bowls, so wins would be difficult, but good showings are definitely in the cards. Going 1-1 in the last two games would be huge step forward for the program.

@HighEliteMajor

I believe changing looks on defense is the key to get them off their game. They are also young and have not quite grasped the intricacies of the college game. so we are actually playing them at a good time, since they are bound to get better as the season moves forward.

The twins shot a combined 1-8 from the 3 today. I say let them shoot and hope they don't get hot like they did at the NCAA last season. Of course, a key will be blocking out and getting in position to get the rebounds. Longer rebounds will abate some of the advantage tall players that play next to the basket have and can result in fast break opportunities that KU can capitalize.

Don't Believe The Hype • Nov 16, 2014 10:12 PM

@justanotherfan

Sometimes just having great players is just not enough; you have to get them to play together as a team. There is no question that UK has great talent, it would be foolish to say they don't; however, the real question is:

As a team, are they better than the sum of the individuals?

or...

As team, are they not as good as the individuals?

Good coaching and team chemistry will make the first case happen; poor coaching and inflated egos will almost guarantee the second.

The twins went 1-8 from 3; I hope they shoot a lot against KU and with the same success...or lack thereof... :)

Most top prospects go to wherever will get them exposure and will get them to the NBA fastest. Smart top prospects go to wherever will get them exposure, improve their game and get them to the NBA fastest. It's not rocket science, really.

Elite programs that get a lot of exposure will always get top prospects. Top coaches will take a marginal NBA prospect and make him a viable NBA prospect; Coach Self has been very successful doing the later.

Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 16, 2014 09:42 PM

If TCU does not make it to the playoffs, this game was likely the culprit. TCU needed, not only to win, but to win big and it barely did the first and not even close to the second.

KU/UCSB Post-Game • Nov 16, 2014 02:44 AM

Kentucky shot 3-14 from 3 or 21.4% against Grand Canyon, BTW, former Jayhawk Royce Wooldridge led the Antelopes with 15 points. KU shot 2-10 from 3 for 20% albeit against better competition. Looks like both teams are weak from the 3.

No question about it. If the played every game like they did this one, the record would be quite different.

Bowen bought himself a fist class ticket on the coaching search ride.

KU leading TCU now. ,Another field long drive and TD for KU....amazing!!!

Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 15, 2014 08:45 PM

After a quick strike by TCU to start the game, KU responded with a field long drive and TD with some great plays in between. Now, they stopped TCU on the red zone and stuffed it on 4th and 1.

TCU not only has to win this game but has to win big to stay in the chase for one of the 4 playoff spots. Hopefully they will continue to play well...

@jaybate-1.0

Come on Jaybate, you are no fun. What happened to the 5 post response or 3,000 word essay?

KU/UCSB Post-Game • Nov 15, 2014 06:27 PM

@Statmachine

I did not say sub par, I said "less than top competition"...right? Sub par are teams like Emporia and Washburn and less than top competition are teams that are good but, well...less than top competition...in other words not top 20-25 like a UK is, like 4 other Big 12 Conference teams are...right?

The only UCSB player 6'-8 or taller that scored, other than Williams, was Brewe that had all of 4 points. Texas has 7 players 6'-8 or taller and most of them can play, Kentucky even more; you can see where fouls can be a big issue when they can throw big after big and draw fouls.

@jaybate-1.0

3 posts? Really? Is that the best you can do? Come on Jaybate, you can do better...

@jaybate-1.0

That is the best you can do? Post away Jaybate, post away; lots of bandwidth yet to waste and the day is young...:)

Apparently they did not know KU was playing UCSB...and these are the people that make decisions about who can and cannot have access to the game broadcasts...un-effing-believable!!!

KU/UCSB Post-Game • Nov 15, 2014 05:16 PM

It is hard to comment on the game when all I have to go by is the radio broadcast, the live stats (which the entire game showed the ECU name and logo) and the post-game press comments.

I posted a while back that Coach Self made some compromises on defense last season in order to play his OADS; I predicted it would not happen again. I looks like the team is back to playing Self ball, that is defense first and foremost.

Looks like Graham and Traylor had good games, Graham directing and scoring and Traylor rebounding and guarding an experienced and future NBA player. Perry's double-double was also nice; I wish I could have seen how he played defense; however, considering that the two other forwards for UCSB had a combined 4 points and 2 rebounds in 21 minutes, it would appear that he did OK, but then, the Gauchos are a teams light on forwards (other than Williams) and heavy on guards, this is probably not a good indicator.

Looks like Svi has put together all the parts of his game except scoring. He can pass, rebound, move the ball, defend and move well in transition; once his scoring comes around, KU will have one heck of a well rounded player.

Oubre not getting much playing time was a surprise. Looks like neither Oubre nor Green are playing to the level that Coach would like and the first one that get his act together will get the minutes. I believe that a Mason, Graham, Selden starting back court is distinct probability, although Mason will get the hook if he continues with the silly TOs; I posted in another thread about his scoring.

Fouls might be an issue going forward. Too many, too quick against less than top competition so far. Luckily the bench is good and deep but this might become a big issue against stronger competition. I am sure this will a be a point of emphasis at practice today.

KU vs UCSB • Nov 15, 2014 04:41 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Spot on about Mason. In HS he was the textbook definition of a volume shooter and he is still having trouble making the transition. He is a lot better than he was last year, when he would start chucking away with 25 seconds left on the clock and to Coach Self's consternation. He needs to study RussRob, who also came in with a reputation of a scorer, but after settling down, he became one of the steadier PGs ever at KU and a fundamental piece of the '08 Championship team.

Expert Predictions? • Nov 15, 2014 12:31 AM

@JRyman

In all fairness, I did not see anywhere in the article or the video where ESPN calls the individuals involved, "experts." I would just call them commentators. By the way. Katz and Greenberg that did the accompanying video, both have KU in the Final Four and Katz has Coach Self as Coach of the Year.

AWESOME!!!

Playing at Pearl Harbor on Veteran's Day and just a few days before the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor...WOW!

The game will apparently be at Hickam AFB; It would be cool to play on the deck of a carrier, but I understand they have had problems with that setting before.

@Crimsonorblue22

Tarik finished his degree in 3 years so he was eligible to play immediately at another school. KU provides a great environment, a great coach and staff, best trainer in the business and more importantly, exposure that only a handful of schools can match. Transferring to KU, if you can call it that since he had already graduated, was win -win situation for both sides,

KU vs UCSB • Nov 14, 2014 06:37 PM

Interesting that the ESPN story indicates that Mario Chalmers was the PG on the '08 team. The real PGs on the '08 teams were RussRob and Collins and Chalmers played mostly SG; he was turnover machine when playing PG.

@Lulufulu

I believe Pastner is unfairly judged by many by his association with Calipari, for whom he was an assistant coach, and when Calipari left he took over the Memphis program; in other words, guilty by association.

He is a young and capable coach and, to the best of my recollection, has not been accused of any shenanigans. He started his coaching career as an assistant to Lute Olson at Arizona, where he also played in their National Championship team, completed his undergraduate degree in only two and a half years, finished his Master's degree and started to work on his Doctorate.

We need to be careful labeling people by their association with Calipari; let's not forget that he started his coaching career at KU under Coach Owens and continued, along with one Bill Self, under Coach Larry Brown.

@JRyman

I seem to recall Coach Roy William calling small.programs "Little Sisters of the Poor"...

UCSB Gauchos • Nov 14, 2014 08:42 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Svi is a very underrated passer. He moves the ball well and quickly and his passes are precise. Also, he does not get rattled when guarded tight or doubled teamed. His court awareness is impressive for someone that young.

I think KU will be tested some but will win comfortably by 12-15 points.

@Crimsonorblue22

ROTFL, you have that right. If you are not a UK fan that is indeed the best loss. :) :) :)

@konkeyDong

I thought I tried exactly what you described and I was unable to get it to work.

Swiss Cheese Basketball • Nov 14, 2014 08:24 AM

@HighEliteMajor

My comment was in relation to Svi who was referred to as a volume shooter. In looking at his record, the only time he took double figure shots was when he played for the under 16 team here he was by far the better player and expected to take a lot of shots and score a lot, With the under 18, the National team and the professional teams he played, he averaged well under 10 shots per game (6-7???); not exactly what you would call a volume shooter. Also, his average from the 3 fluctuated wildly between games and with all games considered, his average from 3 probably slightly over 0.300, not a slouch but not 3 point ace either. This information is available on various sites

Unfortunately, the site where is used to get all the detailed stats now requires registration and a fee and I am not about to pay to get stats from East European country Leagues. It is not a big deal either.

Beautiful views from that campus. The kids of family friends on the East Coast attended Pepperdine and they were able to bring their polo horses with them since the school had on-campus stables...I guess that says it all...

Worst loss in recent memory...defending NCAA Champion UK losing to Bobby Mo in the opening round of the NIT!

@konkeyDong

I am not sure that works for all providers any more. As you know, your provider has to be a subscriber of ESPN3 and to access it you have to indicate your provider and sign with the Id/password of your provider which in time allows ESPN3 determine your location. At least this is the way it works with Consolidated Communications/SureWest in Olathe, Kansas.

My ISP provider does subscribe to ESPN3 but when I sign in, it immediately tells me the KU game is blacked out for my area. There are a few Eastern European feed that will re-broadcast the ESPN3 feed, but they are getting a lot better and smarter at not letting you in (like they did last year) unless you download their plugins...which are carriers of all kinds of viruses. Just not worth the aggravation anymore.

Swiss Cheese Basketball • Nov 13, 2014 11:23 PM

@drgnslayr

What do you consider a volume shooter? 15 shots per game? 20? 25? 30?

Swiss Cheese Basketball • Nov 13, 2014 10:48 PM

@KUSTEVE

I agree. If you recall during the summer I thought that Mickelson would be the main big, but after Coach Self's comments during Media day, it sounded like Lucas had improved the most and would be the main big and his play has validated Coach Self's comments.

@Crimsonorblue22

Nice story on Bowen. Looks like he is trying to get hsi players motivated and he is not afraid of doing something different. I like that.

@jaybate-1.0

Blah, blah, blah, blah...

You are what in Texas they call all hat, no cattle or is it all sizzle, no steak...or better yet...all fart and no poo...

In Kansas we have it simpler...if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with the bull....

I really get to you,.don't I? One long post full of non-sense...and you still did not answer the question. You are, if nothing else, predictable.

Now baffle us, Jaybate, baffle us so more, baffle us away, indeed...it is not like you are paying for the bandwidth. :(

Oops, I almost forgot...all in good fun,. no malice intended...or words to that effect. :)

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start • Nov 13, 2014 01:46 AM

First Half

Jamari - 11 minutes

Alexander - 6 minutes

Lucas - 7 minutes

Mickelson - 8 minutes

Second Half

Jamari - 7 minutes

Alexander - 6 minutes

Lucas - 5 minutes

Mickelson - 6 minutes

How exactly is that pushing Mickelson down the depth chart? Just my opinion but numbers indicate that all bigs were given just about the same playing time and they all score just about the same as well.

@jaybate-1.0

Up to par with whom? The New England Patriots? KU football facilities have already been upgraded and are comparable or better than the other conference programs. You can go on and on and on ( you will likely do that anyway) but it would help if you can show a scintilla of evidence that supports your assertions, not that I am expecting you to address the actual topic...

Here doggie...yap, yap..yip, yip, yuk, yuk...backfill here...

Did I get that right? No malice intended, of course. :) :) :)

Now I will go back to acting my age...

Swiss Cheese Basketball • Nov 12, 2014 11:05 PM

@wrwlumpy

We really don't know how much more Coach Self want to test different lineups. Keep in mind that last night he twice replaced 4 players at a time and had 4 freshmen of the floor.

I t really depend on whether he wants to match up with the opponent or he wants the opponent to match up with KU and how much experience he wants to give to Svi. I would guess that a line up of Mason, Graham, Selden, Ellis and Lucas is possible with maybe Greene replacing Graham. Other than the fouls, Lucas played very well last night and I think he earned a starting spot. Having said that, at this stage anything is possible. I think Coach Self will follow the fouls issue with the bigs closely; way too many against ESU, think how that translates against UK...scary.
