What makes it more puzzling (read that stupid) is that only the State of Kansas and the KC Metro area get blacked out on ESPN3, and short of having Time Warner or Comcast (with the optional package), you don't get to watch some football, and more importantly basketball games. It looks like KU has not only endorsed these two providers but it is actively marketing their services and forcing you to move to them; something that seems very unseemly to me. Yes, we do get a lot of money from Adidas, but they do not force you to wear their gear in order to watch KU. The Athletic Department does not even get any money for this stupid arrangement, they just get "in kind" programming that is of interest to a miniscule portion of KU fans.

I am waiting to see a TV add with Zenger pointing a finger saying "I want you as Time Warner client; if you want to watch your beloved Jayhawks you better switch..."

I STILL HATE ZENGER...

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start β€’ Nov 12, 2014 07:04 PM

Any comments on allowing offensive rebounds? By following the play by play it looked like ESU was getting rebounds after missed free throws, something you just cannot allow, otherwise we will get owned by the UK bigs.

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start β€’ Nov 12, 2014 03:28 AM

My impression from following the play by play on the internet and not actually watching the game...

KU started 1-9 and then shot 5-9 from the 3. Big improvement.

Extremely balance scoring. 9 players scored between 9 and 13 points. surprisingly Svi was not one of them, consistency is going to be an issue with him

Fouls are a concern with the bigs. Mickelson 5, Lucas 4, Alexander 3...against Emporia State?

Have you actually been inside the Jayhawk Towers? I take that you have not. I lived at the Towers and I know what they looked before and what they look after they were remodeled, and I have also seen the football housing facilities at other schools, most recently the athlete's housing at the University of Maryland. As housing for football players go, they are equal or better than those used by similar programs at other Division I schools.

I would like you to show me one article that indicates that athletic housing at KU is not comparable to other similar programs...and please, don't post the video of the UK basketball housing, were are talking football. Maybe you can find one...I am not asking for two...just one story where a football player indicated that he did not come to KU because of the housing conditions.

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start β€’ Nov 11, 2014 02:47 AM

@HighEliteMajor

I have followed his play and stats ever since he came into KU's radar, No question that he has innate talent and the versatility to play multiple positions plus the basketball IQ to adapt to a new system faster than the average players. While the average freshman, even a McD All American, arrives on campus having played high school competition that often involves players that work at McDonald's and better competition at AAU tournaments, Svi was establishing his bona fides playing against grown men in the professional Euro Leagues. He is stronger and more experience than we realize.

The one thing that he does not quite have is consistency. He can be dominant in one game and run of the mill average the next one; The biggest thing he will need to learn is to pace himself and acquire consistency.

What is the difference between a good player and great player? CONSISTENCY.

Look at all the good players around and now look at the ones we generally consider great and you will see that what they have in common is consistency. Lots of great players have graced the hardwood and most end up being a flash in the pan and one season wonders and are soon forgotten but only the ones that play well consistently achieve greatness.

IMHO. whether intentional or not, that was clearly a helmet to helmet hard contact, extremely dangerous and by rule a serious infraction.

I am all for stop sissifing the game; however, I am also against practices that can cause permanent damage to another player, particularly when he is unprotected. The NFL has gone long way to prevent this type of hits and does not even allow the QB to be tackled once he starts sliding (see yesterday's Chiefs game). To me, this hit hits fall in the dangerous category.

" But as long as the football program lacks first rate housing to attract recruits, and first rate locker rooms, also, for the same purpose, they might have a struggle landing the right coach. Stadium size appears largely irrelevant in the media-gaming-shoe complex age IMHO..."

The football facilities at KU were hugely upgraded and they are at the same or higher level than that of the top conference programs. The housing at the Jayhawk Towers is comparable or better than that of most other Division I programs; most people that criticize it have never been inside. The football facilities are not an issue at KU, none whatsoever. You should take a tour of the new football complex...

Whether we like it or not, this is still the team Coach Weis assembled. Yes Cumming is now the QB but if you watched the pres-season scrimmage and the the previous two wins, Cozart played extremely well. It was the Texas game where the wheels came off and he had a bad game that placed him in jeopardy and a slow start against West Virginia that sealed his fate; he would have been replaced regardless of who was the head coach.

How to beat Kentucky... β€’ Nov 10, 2014 05:18 PM

@drgnslayr

I am sure Coach Self will come up with the best plan, he know his personnel better than any of us and has a lot of talent assisting him.

My best guess is that KU will try to control the tempo with speed and quick feed to the inside where our (hopefully) quicker and more agile bigs can score or draw fouls or quick passes to the outside for open looks that our, so far "potential" shooters, can take advantage. I would say use the full court press but we all know that Coach Self likes a strong, hard working traditional defense, so if he uses it it will be a surprise and will not be for long. KU also has a deep bench so I would not be surprised to see changing looks, both in offense and defense, throughout the game as way to disturb UK's rhythm.

In any case, the margin of error is extremely small and KU will have to play pretty much "mistake-free" to come up on top. No line in Vegas yet, but it would not surprise me to see it in the 8-10 range.

"I am firmly of the belief that Coach Self's system does not require multiple years to learn. No college coach can legitimately run a system like that because he can't keep his team together that long."

I respectfully disagree. Coach Self "developed" his system at Oral roberst long before the OADs and it obviously did not account for players not staying long enough to learn the system. Coach Self AND the players themselves have stated that to derive "full benefit" of the system, players typically need more than one season. In order to accommodation the OADs, the system has been simplified (dumbed down) and while it works, it does not derive the full benefit of all the variations of the full system.

Out with old in with the OAD β€’ Nov 10, 2014 04:33 PM

@drgnslayr

Don't forget that Svi has been playing in a professional league with grown men, many of them former American college players, for a while now so he knows how to play against grown, strong men probably better that the other players in the team. We casually dismiss Euro ball all too often as being not good, and 20 years ago it was probably true; however, the level in those Leagues has improved dramatically and now the difference is small. A few years ago the US sent less than top teams to international competitions and they were soundly defeated, so a program was started to have an active National Team comprised of top player to represent the country and only after that approach the USA team started winning again.

The NBA currently has 92 foreign players in team's rosters and the San Antonio Spurs, have a record 10 foreign players; last year's championship team had 8 foreign players in the roster. Surprising isn't it?

TCU and Baylor currently sit at #5 and #6 and they have relatively easy games the rest of the way. #1 Mississippi State and #4 Alabama will likely play each other in the SEC championship game and only one will likely stay in top 4, which opens the door for 2 Big 12 teams in the final 4. Out with old in with the OAD β€’ Nov 09, 2014 09:44 PM

@drgnslayr @HighEliteMajor

As I mentioned in my post...This coming season we have a combination of both where we have a couple of borderline elite players and a couple of superior player with some experience. In today environment, the current team is the best combination that we can now expect unless/until the rules change and force players to stay longer. Maybe we will not have the full impact of Coach Self's system but we will not have a system so dumbed down that is almost infective either."

Once you open the door to the OADs, then it becomes very difficult to go back to the previous system. To attract top talent that is not OAD, you have to have the allure of attracting OADs, does it make sense? In other words, to attract top talent you have to attract and get a few OADs, otherwise you lose the reputation as a top tier/elite program and top talent stays away. A difficult balance to say the least.

This upcoming season is going to be really interesting because we will be able to contrast last year's team with top OADs against this year's team with fringe OADs but with more experience. Considering that last year was one of the less success seasons in Coach Self's tenure, I will guess that this team will come out ahead...and this is probably a good thing, since the OAD phenomenon is here to stay, at least until the NBA entry rules are changer.

KU leading ISU 17-0 after one quarter... β€’ Nov 09, 2014 09:14 PM

@eastcoasthawk

I don't believe we are ready to hand anyone the keys to the office; however, Bowen should certainly merit consideration.

As far as Henny, he is still doing the same thing (7 tackles) but sometimes how often his name is called depends on who is calling the game; some announcers are more familiar with KU personnel than others and are likely to mention his name more often, while others emphasize the overall plays and not the players.

Unusual for KU to be the underdog. Having said that, most everybody in the country seems to like KU. I talk to friends on both coasts and just about everybody has a high opinion of KU it could be an extension of the reputation the state that has as a down to earth, wholesome place with salt of the earth people, that feeds the country. Missouri, on the other hand, is almost the reverse; most people don't seem to care one way or another about it and many people mention meth, as the first thing that comes to mind, when talking about Missouri.

KU leading ISU 17-0 after one quarter... β€’ Nov 09, 2014 12:39 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

I think Bowen is very good option as I mentioned before. Having been raised in Lawrence and played at KU, he can sell the program better than any other candidate, particularly if he gets support from the higher ups. He seems to have connected with the players and he would come at a much lower cost that a "name" coach" which has not worked well for KU recently. His contract can be structured with bonuses based on progress, so if KU does well, he makes a lot more but if it stays the same , then it does not cost KU much.

On separate note, I really, really wish the student would not have taken the goal post down after beating ISU. Nothing says "small time" like tearing down the posts after a win over a weak opponent.

Of course, but if KU beats UK in Indianapolis, it would be consider and upset, don't you agree? There is no question that KU will be the underdog. I hope KU plays out of its mind and blows UK away.

Out with old in with the OAD β€’ Nov 09, 2014 12:01 AM

I don't think it is the time it takes to develop the players as much as it is time it takes the players to truly learn the system. Coach Self and the players themselves have indicated that to take full advantage of the system, one year is just not enough, so thes ystem has in a way been dumbed down in order to have a functioning team with OADs. IMHO, a team of superior (but not elite) players with experience will outperform a team of elite but inexperienced players. The '08 teams is a good example of superior players with experience forming a team that was greater than the individual players; while last year's team was almost the reverse.

This coming season we have a combination of both where we have a couple of borderline elite players and a couple of superior player with some experience. In today environment, the current team is the best combination that we can now expect unless/until the rules change and force players to stay longer. Maybe we will not have the full impact of Coach Self's system but we will not have a system so dumbed down that is almost infective either.

I know lots of people complain about the OADs but if coach Self stop getting them we would hear even more complaints that he cannot recruit. There is no way to please all the people all the time so Coach Self needs to do what he deems best for the program; there is no question that he knows a hell of a lot more than we do, and his ongoing success is proof that whatever he is is working rather well, even with the OADs.

UK returns the bulk of the team that went to the title game last season and they have added more All-American McDs that would start at just about every other program. Whether we like it or not, there is no question that UK will be favorite by 8-10 points. Keep in mind that the game will be in Indianapolis which is a short 3 hour drive from Lexington, this is why Calipari likes playing there and where he will be right at home; it is the equivalent of KU playing at the Sprint Center in KC.

Now if Roy Williams knew about the classes and did nothing, then. this makes him corrupt, if he did not know about them (knowingly or not) that makes him an incompetent manager, claims that it was not really his job notwithstanding. You can not really have it both ways..

Chuck Neinas to help with KUFBHC search β€’ Nov 07, 2014 03:02 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

It would be absolutely great if we could, unfortunately it does not work this way. Search and recruiting firms simply find suitable candidates, vet them and submit their names to the search committee which in time makes the final decision. I am not sure if they could even get a policy through Lloyd's of London (who will find an insurer for just about anything, for a price ...of course), since the termination criteria would be be nearly impossible to establish and the cost would be pretty much that of a buyout.

I would guess that Zenger is the he head of the search committee so hiring Weis was on him, although in my opinion, it seemed like a good hire at the time and I wish he would have been given more time; however, when you add the TV blackout fiasco, his judgement is seriously in question.

In short, KU has two options, go with established coach for a lot of money and make sure he has all the resource s to make the program successful, or go for an up-and-coming coach for a lot less money, and give him the resources needed and most of all a reasonable time to make progress;. these two year stints are not working, make the position less attractive and are not conductive to get a program going...of course they work great for the coaches since they get paid for the entire contract anyway; on the. other hand, I seriously doubt that at this time we can get a coach that would take a non-guaranteed contract.

Best option, IMHO, is to keep Bowen for a couple of year (he makes a pittance compared to what we would be paying a new coach; the contract can be back loaded (NOT Jaybate "backloaded" ) where he gets substantial bonuses based on performance at the end of the term.
