@drgnslayr
Agreed. Nice group of young men that represent the state well. Too bad their coach tends to speak up a little too much; I do understant that it must be frustrating having the top ranked team in the state and still be the third banana :-)
I am sure he does and by all accounts he is very respectful of them. My point is that once you turn 18, you parents no longer can force you to do anything you don't want, all they can do is give advice.
I believe Ken Pom's computer has blown a gasket. He has Creighton as #2 and San Diego State, the team that beart Creighton (and KU) as #21. Creighton also lost to George Washington and were pounded by Providence just last Saturday.
Creighton has a couple of outstanding shooters but last night shooting display was a "perfect storm" type of game and unlikely to be duplicated. Its schedule so far has not been anything to write home about. Does anyone believe Creighton is the #2 team in the land? I don't.
I believe you might be correct. I was going to look up the rules but I got held up with work.
The trip was likely planned ahead of time so they could catch a WSU game as well. His brother was in the audience as were several WSU players who were interviewed and seemed pretty diplomatic; it is unlikely that you get to do this on a spur of the moment.
Once Wiggins turns 18, there is not much his parents can do, legally or otherwise. They can offer advise but the decision is uniquely his and his alone.
Unfortunately times have changed. In today's environment, Duncan Olajuwon and particularly Shaq are all one and done. Jabbar and Walton also stayed in College 4 years but they certainly would be one and done as well. Even Jordan stayed in college 3 years even when he was named Freshman of the year and was a unanimous first team All-American in his sophomore and junior years. Different times.
Not related to KU directly but top 25 ranking related nonetheless.
Is there a team in Division 1 more overrated than Ohio State? I kept mentioning before that, even when they were unbeaten and ranked #2, all their wins were against teams outside the top 50. Now, they are playing better conference competition and have lost 4 games in a row including last night to Nebraska...are you kidding me? NEBRASKA?
I also mentioned that Iowa State had a suspect schedule and now, against better competition, they have lost 3 in a row.
For all the heartache to us fans that 4 loses bring, it sure looks like the tough early schedule has helped the team and it is slowly morphing into a Final Four caliber team.
I have watched the play several times and it looks to me that when his foot was on the line he was not touching the ball and then he went airborne, caught the ball and flicked back to Embiid. The play happened so fast that we may never be able to tell and the play will stand as called.
A no brainer. It might end up being the floor burn play of the year.
Spot on HEM. I kept waiting the entire second half for the 3/4 court press and it only materialized at the very end; part of the reason was KU in-bounding the ball quickly and beating Baylor to the half court, but mostly it was bad planning by Baylor's coaching staff that obviously did not read the scouting report of the KU-OSU game.
Baylor has the talent; its top 6-7 players are as good and experienced as any other team in the league but I cannot think of a worse coach than Scott Drew. Looks like the coaching genes in the family went from Homer to Bryce and skipped Scott altogether. With a different coach, Baylor is a top 5 team.

You said:
"In the end, it didn't matter that Cory Jefferson ate Perry Ellis' lunch in giant gulps."
I disagree.
Jefferson played 30 minutes, scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting including 2 3 pointers when the game was already decided, had 6 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls; he also shot 2-4 free throws.
Perry on the other hand played 27 minutes, had 18 points on 6-8 shooting, had 5 rebounds,1 assists, 2 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls; he also shot 6-7 free throws.
I would say that Perry not only held his own, but actually had better number than Jefferson, don't you think?
It didn't take long for Douche Bag #2 to raise his ugly head. I don't ever watch Jack Harry but while fumbling with the remote I stumbled upon his recap of the game. He proceeded to spout how Selden was out of bounds when he made the play of the game and the refs gave KU the call...the man cannot help himself; he is like a cartoon character and a bad one at that.
Unlike network analysts, local sports reporters are supposed to be just that, reporters that "report" the news, not use their spot as a platform to spout biased views and continuously criticize the team that is the rival of their school. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity? FWIW, I watched several other newscasts and read the game recaps in various publications and not a single one indicated that Selden was out of bounds when he saved the ball.
Smart is quickly developing a reputation as as flopper; not a good thing. I found an awesome pic but lost the link; I will try to find it and post it later.
...and auto racing...
@jaybate 1.0
Now you are starting to sound creepy...
@jaybate 1.0
Jaybate in drag?
Withey had the uncanny ability of redirecting the blocked shot to a KU player almost every time, something that Joel has not yet mastered although he does get the ball himself on occasions. Whitey also had the perfect block form where he would seldom foul; Joel will in time get there. Joel is the better offensive player.
Interesting feature in Isaiah Austin...
It does explain why he shies away from contact and does not play much on the inside, like you would expect from a 7 footer...and Scott Drew still sucks.
link fixed...
For all Jayhawk fans that watched the KU-OSU game you know that since Marcus Smart could not do a flip he did a flop instead. In the NBA the play would be reviewed after the game and he would be fined for flopping.
On a related note, the Argentinian Soccer Federation awarded Smart an lifetime honorary membership. :)
@jaybate 1.0
Look like a phallic symbol with a crimson and blue rubber...
I wish the conference would review flops after the game like the NBA does; Smart would certainly get at least one.
The double foul call was ridiculous. Instead of giving both players fouls it should have been no foul and the ball goes to the team with the arrow possesion.
Just about every time you beat the 3/4 court press it should result in an easy basket by the free player waiting by the basket. Instead the ball was being passed to the top of the key and kicked out to reset the play. Anyone remembers the NCAA game against Anderson's UAB and the 40 minutes of hell fame that had just beaten Kentucky with a full court press the entire game and threatened to do the same to KU? Every time KU guards beat the press the result was an easy basket and a thumping of UAB. Coach Self should show that game to the team, although that KU team was coached by Coach Roy Williams.
As I posted in another thread...
Sometimes I hate it when I call it right. I though that Forte might be the x-factor and darn it if the smurf-on-steroids part-deux (Keiton Paige was the original one) didn't almost single-handedly steal the game.
Gotlieb is a douche and the bag it came in. When Seth Davis indicated that KU is a legitimate final four team, Dougie started to whine and bring up the SDSU game. Davis gave him a look that basically said...you are moron, and told him...see you in March. Dougie tried to backpedal and looked even more pathetic.
Doug Gotlieb has officially " Jumped the shark." The older posters will know what I am talking about.
I bet you did not know that the first female Globetrotter was no other than Lynette Woodard, KU's best female (and Hall of Fame) basketball player ever. She eventually had a stint as head coach at KU.

Black had 17 point in a game where referees allowed an inordinate amount of fouls and basically swallowed their whistles; this is not the norm and most every other game this season has been called the other way around.
Unfortunately for Tarik, the change in contact rules have taken what is/was one of the more important part of his game, i.e. physicality. Unless we run into a refereeing crew like the one at the Georgetown game, the chances of Tarik having another big game are pretty slim.
You asked a question, the question was answered and yet here you are again asking the same question. Do you really want to know the answer or are you more interested having other posters to agree with you?
As many have mentioned, Embiid was a complete unknown and unranked by all the reporting services at the start of his Senior HS season. Calipari's bread and butter are top 25 players and McDonald All American candidates (where KU's is more top 100); Embiid was neither and Calipari had signed Dakari Johnson, the #2 center. It was only later in the season that Embiid was noticed and a true stroke of luck that KU got him. Like Calipari, most every major college recruiting team missed on Embiid. By the time the season ended, Embiid stock had risen but he still did not even make the McDonald's All American team; the first time we were able to really see hm was at the Nike All Star where he looked really tall, and really raw.
We are extremely fortunate that Embiid is developing into a superb player; there are many tall, similarly built African players warming the benches at schools all over.
GIS stand for Geographic Information Systems and it has to do with locating data in space. The space can be the entire United States or a basketball court, same concept, different scale. Those shot charts you see next to score boxes are simply x-y location representation of where shots were taken, i.e. geographic locations. Some times locations can be relative such a player position in relation to the baseline and sometimes they can be absolute where they are geo-coded with absolute coordinates, such as the photos taken by most cell phones that you can physically display in any map with the proper tools.
Spacial visualization and GIS have been used extensively in basketball for a while now. Most every NBA team has a system of cameras installed that tracks every player about 25-30 times per second and produce tons of data that the better teams use to analyze their plays.
As far as line of sight visualization within the court, there is zero difference between venues. Unlike football, all basketball courts are perfectly flat, with the exact same dimensions and the baskets (backboard and rim) are essentially identical and located at the the exact same location and height. While the background can affect vision somewhat, from any specific location on the court, a player has the exact same look of the rim regardless of venue. For spectators the situation is completely different as every venues outside the court boundaries can be uniquely different, but then, spectators in the stands are not taking the shots, players within the court are. With minor practice, most players have no problems shooting in different venues...and yes, I do work extensively with GIS.
OSU won the first game in Lawrence, yes, the one with the flip, last year. KU won the second game in Stillwater in double overtime and thus exacted revenge for the loss in Lawrence.
I believe a lot of fans are under the impression that the "flip" game in Lawrence is the most recent, it is not.
Your atonement is not complete until sister Ophelia raps you on the knuckles 5 times with a wooden ruler...
Not a big fan of Tubby, but I believe this game says more about how bad a coach Drew is than how good Smith is.
Chaney was a thug that sent one of his players to the court with specific instruction to seriously hurt another player. I have zero respect for Chaney.
Any coach that puts one of his own players in that situation has no business coaching.
Sportswriter want cheap headlines without the hard work, perhaps a reflection of out society at large. Look at what the San Diego Union did in the Merv story. Their entire conspiracy theory was based on Merv not having any Div, 1 offers, when in fact this was not true. Did any one call them on that? No. People have become jaded and expect sportswriters to be lazy, after all we are lied by our Federal Government and politicians on a daily basis and yet we continue to re-elect them and cede a good chunk or our money to them...why should we expect a higher standard from sportswriters than we do of our politicians?
Let's face it. None of us knows what goes on behind closed doors at practice. Sometimes Coach Self will point out specific players having good practices, but I know they all give 100% effort in practice, they have to otherwise they would not be playing at KU. There is a lot of speculation about Greene, White and other players but the truth s none of us has clue about what is happening. Coach Self will play the players best suited to produce a win and he has been extremely successful at doing this and he will continue to do so; there are only so many minutes available and he knows better than any of us how to fill them.
Much like ISU, OSU has no bench. The have only 8 players averaging double digit minutes and one of those players is Cobins that is done for the year. The key in this game is to neutralize Smart and Brown, two players capable of inflicting serious damage. K-State did the smart think to contain Smart; they kept him on the bench with foul trouble, not a bad strategy. I will guess that Coach Self will attack Smart and Brown with Selden and Wigging with the idea of getting them in foul trouble. The wild cards are Nash and Forte. Nash can be effiective, when he plays with effort, something he is not known for doing much of. Forte is quick and can be deadly from 3-point land; I imagine a combination of Mason and Frankamp could be effective.
In the end it will come down to what Smart and Brown can do, particularly Smart. Keep them on the bench for long periods of time and you take away their effectiveness.
As others have mentioned, Embiid was unranked well into his last HS season. It was towards the end when coaches started noticing him.
Calipari sure was a sorry sight last night, With a sweat soaked shirt he looked particularly un-compossed...and obviously hot under the collar.
I have been saying all along to trust Coach Self and that once the players embrace his system KU would be OK. It looks like is tuning out exactly this way.
Selden will be guarding Smart. Smart is powerful player and Selden is the best defensive match. I can see Coach Self having Selden and Wiggins drive on Smart to get him in early foul trouble.
To Embiid or not to Embiid; this is the big question.
I am pretty sure Embiid will be gone at the end of the season, and if one year is all we get, I am good with it.
Folks, I don't know if some of you really appreciate what we are witnessing. Many time I see the gentle giant go to work and I have to ask myself, did he just do that? We are watching the birth of a superstar. Years from now we will be telling the younger generation about the time we saw Embiid play, much like we occasionally hear from some one that saw Wilt play. Let's enjoy the ride and the time we have Embiid at KU.
Hoiberg's talent at ISU is limited and consists of rejects from other schools. He has done very well with the talent he has but ISU has no depth, at least not of the quality needed to play in the Big 12.
Like many other teams, ISU record has a few close calls against teams they should have dominated and now they have lost two in a row. Same think with Ohio State who rose to #2 by not laying anyone of consequence and the first time they play decent teams they lost both games.
If Ben was still at KU he would be a Junior. Also, if he stayed one extra year, at least a couple of the current players, including Wiggins, would likely not be at KU.
This seems to be a variation of the hack-a-Shaq strategy, except Joel is a much better free throw shooter so opposing coaches are sending attack dogs to "bait" him, and as we all know, the reacting player is the one that usually gets caught, and the refs are playing right along. Terribly unfair to the gentle giant from Cameroon.
I am not sure there is an easy solution. An off the record talk with League officials might help, but the best solution might that a variation of Officer Jim Malone in the Untouchables...
"You wanna protect Embiid? Here's how you do it. They pull a knife, you pull a gun. They send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That's the KU way, and that's how you protect Embiid!."
The Mayor tried all kinds of psy-ops prior to the game. The injury-gate and convenient hire of Doc Saddler were all designed to rattle KU.
In the end, ISU proved to be that they are exactly what they are, a team with no depth that lives and dies by the three. Only 7 ISU players saw the court and if Kane did not play it would have been only six. You cannot go though a Big Conference schedule with a roster that shallow. By the end of the season, the players will be physically spent; not a good way to go into the NCAA.
It was not just a win, it was a statement.
KU is now showing that it has embraced Self-Ball and it is paying off. The game would have been a blowout without the one sided foul calling. Teams are starting to hang all over Embiid with the idea of getting him in trouble and the refs are playing right along. A lot more fouls need to be called when players grab him and hold his arms and when he tries to free himself, he invariably get the foul called on him. Nyang showed he is still a flopper, but Karma eventually got him with two quick fouls.
There is no question that KU is now in the driver's seat with two good road wins. As usual, the Conference Title still goes through Lawrence.
I did not care for the new uniforms. If you remove the name, there is nothing that says KU; I prefer some version of the road blue uniform.
CBS is reporting that Kane will suit up...
Of course how effective he is playing on a weak ankle is the big question. It might be just Psy-ops by ISU to confuse KU. If he plays, I can see the KU guards driving to his left to test the ankle or cause a little pain and agravation.
@jaybate 1.0
Hoiberg has played college and NBA BBall and he has also been a manager in the NBA and as such, he is very aware of the consequences of playing a player that is injured. By all account he is a stand up guy and obviously a very good coach and I really don't believe he would play Kane unless he is fit to play.
@tundrahok +1
I believe it is very unfair to judge the entire population of a state based on the actions of a few.
A horrible crime in Kansas was the basis of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood." arguably one one the more famous crime books ever. How about the BTK killer? ,,,and he is one of about 4 or 5 serial killers in the Wichita area alone...or Richard Grissom with ties to the Johnson County area. Should the entire state be consider a breeding ground for sociopaths and serial killers?
The answer is obviously no, and the entire state of Iowa should not be judged based on what a few miscreants do either. Wouldn't you agree?
When it comes to serial killers, we do live in a glass house and should be the last think we want to criticize other states for. I wish it would be different.
As I posted before...
You knew it would be a good game when Tarik came in and did not get his customary foul just for checking in.
You knew it would get better when Tarik did not get his fourth foul after 3 minutes in the court.
You knew it would be a great game when Tarik actually drew 2 charging fouls; who knew they still called charging fouls.
