It might not be that's simple. His contract may prevent him from participating, other than casually, in forums not related to the Topeka CJ. Hopefully this forum is not considered competition and he can contribute more extensively here; I believe it would benefit both parties. He has access to information we don't and we provide an audience that would expand his coverage.

Is this weird? • Nov 21, 2013 01:55 AM

The 76ers just cut Kwame Brown, the overall #1 pick in 2001. By all account he was considered a bust and averaged just over 6 point and 5 rebounds over a 13 year NBA career.

By the way, he is 6'-11" and centers seem to be in demand in the NBA. He made $67 million in those 13 years....not bad for a bust.

I am sorry but JoJo is gone after this year.

@wishawk

Regarding ESPN3, I don't know if the blackout is based on the IP address of the device or where the ATT Uverse account is located. I live in Wisconsin and I don't have any cable TV subscription, but do have Internet service. I have a Xbox and also Xbox Live Gold, and my son is at Madison and has ATT Uverse. So I add ESPN app on the Xbox, and had my son validate the code that links the Xbox Live account to my son's Uverse account. I don't have to have his login info, but simply gave him the code. Once he validates the code on ATT, my Xbox live is granted access to ESPN. And I'm able to watch ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 on the Xbox. I don't know if it makes any difference if I were in Kansas since my local IP would be in Kansas, not in Wisconsin. Just thought I'd mention it.

The ESPN3 blackout is only for the State of Kansas and the Kansas City Metro Area, hence the irritation by Kansans all over the state; it is probably a combination of provider and IP. ESPN3 should not be blacked out in Wisconsin and you should have no problem accessing ESPN3; this is pretty much what the live feed providers are doing, broadcasting the ESPN3 feed that is not blocked to them.

Everybody talks about the weather but no one does a damn thing about it.

Unknowwn

POTUS said you could keep your insurance if you like it period and KUAD said he wouldn't harm the loyal KU fans, birds of a feather.

PHOF!!!

Post-Game Round-up -- Kansas 86 Iona 66 • Nov 20, 2013 07:23 PM

Sorry if someone mentioned this .. I understand that you can get the ESPN 3 stream in the KC area if you have ATT Uverse by downloading Google chrome, and getting an "extension." I apologize, I'm not a computer dude. But that extension will allow you to get the signal as it makes it appear that your IP address is out of this area. You then connect your laptop to your TV with an HDMI cable. Just what I heard ....

I have tried all the possible combinations with Surewest but I could not get it to work since Surewest is blacked out and regardless of what IP you have, you provider still shows. It could be because Surewest has subscribers only in the KC are a and a small base in California. Maybe, since ATT has a national presence, it is not blacked out as a provider but only through the IP.

Surewest is now called Consolidated Communications and has a larger footprint. I tried using their portal last time but it would not allow me with my Surewest login; I was told I need to talk to Consolidated tech. support to get access to their portal. I will try it for the next game.

Dang it!! Another game I couldn't watch. I mean, come on! This is stupid. I listened to the game on 105.9 and honestly the commentary from our two local guys is pretty good sometimes. But, how many more games am I going to miss on tv?

I posted a working link prior to the game. Not the greatest quality but watchable.
We need to have a section prior to each game that is no widely available where links can be posted, so all of us that are blacked out can find a viable option.

Post-Game Round-up -- Kansas 86 Iona 66 • Nov 20, 2013 07:03 PM

Back to the game and some assorted observations.

Embiid will be starting from here on. when Blackis in the game, the team seems to play at a much slower tempo; with him on the bench I noticed a much faster tempo.

Traylor's motor is a two edged sword, it can make him very good or if he cannot control it, not so goo.

Frankamp's defense was a nice surprise. There was lot of talk that he was a 'gunner" that would not be able to play Div. defense. Now we know he can.

Am I the only one that thinks that Mason was taking too many shoots? He was constantly penetrating and taking contested shots; although in all fairness, he was drawing fouls. Ideally, he should penetrate and if he does not draw the defense take it to the house, but if he draws the defense, she should pass to whoever is open for an easy two.

Wiggins is the silkiest player ever. He contributes in so many ways and sometimes you cannot even tell he is in the game. He will be the silent assassin.

This is by far the deepest team we have had in a long time; In addition to the five starters we have at least 5 other players that would star for any team in the conference. It is a tough job for Coach Self to spread the available minutes among that many deserving players.

Regardless of what Mr. Zenger says, the current contract still sucks. Having to troll for an internet stream is infuriating and frustrating and the quality of the available stream often not good.

@Jesse Newell

Hey guys --- Hope you don't mind me showing my face here.

Just wanted to let you know we've been doing live game blogs over at the CJ for the KU basketball games, in case you're interested. It's a little different setup with Cover It Live, but it has some cool features. Hoping to get some of the gang back together there, including (hopefully) Jaybate? We'll see.

Great to see you posting here. I was wondering why I had not seen any of your stories at the LJW and a quick search told me you are now with the Topeka CJ.

Looks like there are lots of changes at the LJW and IMHO, not for the better: Their forum is now a shadow of what it used to be and now, their top talent is leaving as well. Their loss our gain, I say.

Your insight is always welcome here; we will be obviously looking forward to seeing your posts. Many member from the other forum post here now, so their names will be familiar. Make yourself at home and welcome again.

Here is a link that might work..

link text ↗

As always, be careful and be sure not accept any downloads or "plugins needed" to see the feed; essentially all of them are loaded with viruses.

After each game I run Malwarebytes antivirus including the anti rootkit version.

What is wrong with this picture?

I live Olathe, Ks and I have Surewest as my cable/internet/phone provider. Time Warner is not available in my area, only Comcast and Surewest. I used to have Comcast and as soon as Surewest was available I bolted from Comcast; any one that has used Comcast would know why.

Every game that KSU has played in football and basketball has been available on TV.

Every game that MU has played in football and basketball has been available on TV.

Every game that UK has played in football and basketball has been available on TV.

Most every Big Ten game has been available on TV

I get games both football and basketball of schools I have never heard of.

I am a Kansas resident and taxpayer ad I cannot get, IN KANSAS, football and basketball games for the State's flagship school and the #2 ranked basketball team in the country, unless I change providers to the one endorsed by the Athletic Department..

I have ESPN3 through my cable/internet provider but it is blacked out in Kansas, even when the game has been sold out and there are no tickets available. Every MU fan can watch every KU games. but I, a Kansas resident, taxpayer and Jayhawk fan cannot. The contract could have very easily modified to indicated that Kansas households that do not have access to the "endorsed" provider will not be blacked out by ESPN3.

The audience blacked out, just in the Kansas City metro area, for one basketball game is greater than the audience for all other programs combined for an entire year that are now available on ESPN3.

The money that the Athletic Programs receives from this contract does not go the school's general fund, it goes to the Athletic Department fund. While the Scholl at large might benefit from some programming, the bulk of the programming is about sport that very few people care and even fewer people watch. How many people have actually said: tonight I am going to schedule time to watch the the women's rowing team compete against no-name University? On the other hand, how many people have cursed Mr. Zenger when they found out they could not watch their beloved Jayhawks on TV, while the KSU and MU games were readily available? My guess is that the second number is orders of magnitude larger.

This contract is a de-facto paid endorsement of one cable provider at the expense of KU fans; I am not sure if this is even legal. The Athletic Programs derives a much larger amount of money from Adidas but I don't have to wear Adidas gear to attend a KU athletic event or watch the teams on TV.

Again, what is wrong with this picture?

Mr. Zenger indicates "I would never do anything to alienate anyone in our fan base...." while at the same time admitting that this is exactly what he did. You can't have it both ways, Mr. Zenger.

I am now very weary of what will happen if the Stadium is ever remodeled. Will be have to buy a special sports package to watch KU games? Maybe we will be required to buy a specific brand of TV or car and show a check from the "endorsed" fast food chain. This contract is the beginning of a slippery slope where money talks and fan loyalty walks.

USA Today: Jack Taylor scores 109 points • Nov 19, 2013 04:19 AM

I am sorry but in my opinion this type of basketball games are an embarrassment to the sport. It is basically two team playing zero and I mean ZERO defense as the final score (173-123) indicates; this is 7.4 combined points per minute...it is like watching Frankamp practice shooting 3 pointers. From what I saw on a video from the previous games players did not even come back to play defense and stayed on one side of the court heaving shots. It is volume shooting at its worst.

I remember defending Danny Manning's decision to leave college early for the money he could make in the pros. I knew the university would welcome him back after his pro career so he could finish his degree if he wanted too. And he could get injured and his future career would be in danger. So why defer the income for another year? Today I still think he made a good decision.

@Careful_you. Correct me if I am wrong but Danny Manning did not leave early, he played 4 years at KU.

Any player can turn pro right after high school or even before finishing high school; they just cannot play in the NBA. They can play in the Development League or any of the semi-pros leagues or they can go to Europe and play there.

The NBA, much like any other employers, is within its rights to determine the qualification to play in the league. If you apply for any job, the employer is within its rights to require a degree, experience or whatever else he/she believes is needed to perform the job. The NBA requires a certain age and a minimum level of experience (1 year); remember that in our system, a job is not a right but a privilege you earn.

We don't play Belmont this year, do we?

Belmont Bruins would not be good. KU has had a hard time with the double Bs...

Bucknell Bisons

Bradley Braves

Good thing KU did not play the Butler Bulldogs...

I would prefer to stay under the radar and be #1 in the only poll that counts. Having said that and with the notoriety of KU players, this is not likely to happen.

Pepsi Challenge: It's all about the Taste! • Nov 18, 2013 05:41 PM

Interesting, the "pirated" version has a wider angle and shows the end tables draped with Adidas ads, coincidence???. Jaybate would have had a conniption...as Bill Cosby would say...

Lyle's alleged comments about de-committing from Louisville because not enough playing time is a gigantic red flag to me. I believe Myles Turner is the real target as he has a much higher ceiling and fills a position where KU might need help.

ESPN: UNC loses to Belmont at home. • Nov 18, 2013 05:13 PM

Lots of off court issues and some untimely transfers have hut UNC. They have good class coming but this year might be trying. Roy Williams is a very good coach and he will right he ship.

JaQuan Lyle And The Dreaded Transfer Risks • Nov 17, 2013 07:47 PM

@JRyman. It depends how you define star.

J.R. Giddens did very well at New Mexico and was a first round pick in the NBA draft. He played on and off for a couple of years in the NBA and is currently playing in Italy

David Paget played well at Louisville and played professionally briefly. He is now an assistant coach at IUPUI.

Micah Downs found success at Gonzaga and has played professionally overseas with a few stints in the NBA-D League where he performed well, but has not been able to hook up with a NBA team for other than Summer League play.

CJ Giles went to Oregon after being dismissed at KU and was let go from that team as well. He flirted with the NBA but nothing stuck. He is now playing in Bahrain. He is the one player that had a lot of potential but a bad attitude and discipline basically eliminated any chance he could have had.

These are the only players that come to mind.

UPDATE: Site layout changes • Nov 17, 2013 07:19 PM

@approxinfinity. There is a lot of good information available in the Internet on what are the better combination of fonts and colors to improve legibility.

We are conditioned and are most familiar with whatever more closely resembles written text, i.e. black text on white background, even when it might not necessarily be the most readable or easiest on the eyes. I did a lot of reading on the subject yesterday while looking at the different iterations of the layouts, and in the end , it is still a highly subjective issue.

Also, a lot of the work was done when CRTs with slower refresh rates (flicker) were prevalent. The new LCDs and LEDs monitors, and particularly how well they are adjusted, has a big influence in legibility. I work with computers for a living and you would be surprised with the high percentage of users that have the brightness cranked up really high. After I turned it down they initially think it does not look as good but invariably after a couple of days they report how much more legible and easier on the eyes it is .

Again, do what in your opinion looks best, you will not be able to please every body regardless of what settings you use.

Sorry to hear about your medical issues; I hope things work out for you. As a member of the extended Jayhawk family, you will always be in our thoughts.

Best of luck and let us know from time to time how things are going.

JaQuan Lyle And The Dreaded Transfer Risks • Nov 17, 2013 06:48 PM

@HEM. Frankamp has been a lifetime Jayhawk fan and I just don't see him transferring. Realistically, his chances of playing at the next level are limited; I see him being a valuable contributor in his junior and senior years, much like Tyrel Reed was.

JaQuan Lyle And The Dreaded Transfer Risks • Nov 17, 2013 06:43 PM

@HEM. You mean...being accused of sexual assault is worthy of a waiver? :)

@hayshawk. Who would you suggest KU hire? A young unknown coach will not be able to recruit the Big 12 caliber players needed to compete in the league and a better known coach would be hesitant to come to KU which traditionally has had a weak football program and does not attract top players. Not counting Heaps or Crist, how many 4 or 5 star players has KU had in the last 20 years? My guess is that the big programs, including several in the Big 12, in one year have more of those than KU has had in 20 years

After the Gill fiasco, it is wholly unrealistic to think the program could be turned around in two years; I always thought it would be a 5 year effort. In his first year Coach Weis had to make do with players he inherited and the incoming freshmen he was able to retain. In his first full recruiting season he had to pick from players that had not already committed and JuCo players...with mixed results. Because of eligibility issues and injuries, several key players were not able to take the field this season. Next season the core of the team is coming back, several key players will be eligible and the first batch of players he fully recruited.

I believe that this years team is much better than Gill's second year team.

Next year should be the real test of how much the program has or has not improved under Coach Weis.

JaQuan Lyle And The Dreaded Transfer Risks • Nov 17, 2013 06:06 PM

@dylans. Whitey did not play during his only semester (Fall 2008 ) at Arizona and transferred to KU around the Christmas break, but that semester counted against him. He had to sit out a year (spring 2009 and Fall 2009) and was eligible to play at the end of 2009 and that was considered his first year. After that he had 3 full seasons, 2010-2011, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

In short, he played 3-1/2 season at KU, sat out 2 semesters, and 1 semester was counted as having played for Arizona, even though he did not actually play. It really is not that complicated but it is not that simple either because you also have to consider the hardship waivers and medical red-shirts as well as 4th year players that graduated and are allowed to play at a new school without sitting out one year, and coaches blocking transfer to creation schools that complicate the process.

Many coaches such as Coach Self and Coach K are in favor of doing away with all the exceptions; here is link to an article about coach K:

JaQuan Lyle And The Dreaded Transfer Risks • Nov 17, 2013 08:50 AM

If a player that has already used up his red shirt year transfers, then he would have to sit out one additional year and lose one year of eligibility.

The basketball program is allowed only 13 scholarships per year; KU currently has 18 players in the program which mean 5 players are considered walk on and have to pay their one way. I will guess that the 3 coaches; kids, Self, Roberts, Manning plus Wesley and Garret are those players. The 3 coaches' kids probably get a discount in their tuition and Keith Langford plays for his half brother Wesley; I will guess that Garret probably gets some sort of financial aid.

Coaches like to have more that the allowed 13 scholarship players since it helps with practice particularly having the "excess" players be part of the scout team that tries to duplicate the way KU opponents play. I personally would like to see every player on a scholarship but the NCAA thinks otherwise.

It was nice seeing the football team put all the pieces together and string 4 quarters of decent football. This is by far the biggest win for the programs since the Orange Bowl Glory Days team. Interesting that it happened the same week of one of the better wins for the basketball program as well.

Is this the turning point for the program? I don't know, time will tell, If they can pull a win against ISU and have a decent showing against KSU, the season will definitely be a success, particularly when there is a lot of talent coming back next season plus a bevy of players that had to sit this season. I am cautiously optimistic.

Alexander to Kansas! • Nov 16, 2013 03:15 PM

I like the sound of Alexander "The Great"...

KU jumped from #40 to #7 in the ESPN class ranking; if we get Myles Turner, we have 3 top 10 and KU would certainly move to #1.

Interesting note, neither MU nor Baylor class is ranked in the top 40. MU hiring Haith has greatly harmed the program. Baylor was in several top player's list, but all the money in the world cannot remove the sliminess of Scott Drew...or Waco.

Where is Selfs Ceiling? • Nov 16, 2013 05:54 AM

Hopefully by that time Brad Stevens is tired of dealing with all the prima donnas in the NBA and comes back to coach at KU.
Jacque Vaughn would certainly be interested as would Mark Turgeon and Rex Walters and Jerrod Hasse...

Dang, For once we got one with the hats.
It went just as I thought it would; I think we got the player that fits the system the best. Not a large class, because of the scholarships available, but a quality class. I am happy.

Factoring who may or may not leave, Oubre and Alexander would be a great compliment to the players that we will likely have coming back.
If I were a betting man, I would call Alexander to KU and Okafor and Jones to Kentucky.

Calipari has Failed! • Nov 15, 2013 05:05 PM

Perfection in sports cannot be achieved by natural talent alone. Perfection requires dedication, hard work, a desire to improve your natural talent with sound techniques and fundamentals and a tunnel vision to achieve your objective. In team sports it also requires a coaching and support staff that not only improves the individuals, but more importantly, it molds the team into a cohesive unit whose collective goals are greater than those of any individual and the result is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Xavier Henry vs Jeff Withey • Nov 15, 2013 12:48 AM

@bskeet. Nice pics. They show that he not only got him on the arm (the announcers kept saying that he was strong enough to keep it straight) but also got him with the body. Not a hard foul but considering what they had been calling, this was an easy call for the refs..

USA TODAY 10 Game roundup • Nov 14, 2013 06:06 AM

I miss Martin too. At first I did not think much of him but over time after I learned more about him I came to respect the man a lot. Off the court, he is a very different than the persona he projects on the court.
He did a long radio interview on 610 AM that really showed the other side of Frank Martin, it might still be available somewhere; if you ever have the opportunity to listen to it, it is time well spent.

Nov 13: KU vs Duke Roundup • Nov 14, 2013 05:53 AM

@approximity. I also saw Andrea and though that she deserves a lot of credit for getting the team in such good physical condition.
Also, when they were showing one of Duke's former players, I thought I saw Sherron Collins in the audience; did anyone else see him or is it just me?

Xavier Henry vs Jeff Withey • Nov 14, 2013 05:46 AM

@bskeet. I don't think it is necessary. The refs called it a foul and Parker did not complain about it, so to me it is a foul, and I respectfully disagree with those who don't.
The good guys won and that's all that matters.

Xavier Henry vs Jeff Withey • Nov 13, 2013 11:01 PM

I don't agree. The picture above is a fraction of a second too late and shows Parker on his way down after he made contact. Here is a screen grab of the video that shows Parker clearly making contact;

!Wiggins Dunk.JPG ↗

Obviously the picture is not clear as it is a low resolution screen grab but you can see the contact that happened right before the picture above. If I can find a high def. feed of the video, I will download it and do a frame by frame review and get a better pic using Adobe Elements Video Video.
Also, I did not recall Parker complaining about the call, he obviously knew he touched Wiggins.

Nov 13: KU vs Duke Roundup • Nov 13, 2013 06:35 PM

@wissoxfan83. Do you realize the first game started at 4:30 PM West Coast time?
ESPN or any other network for that matter has to schedule the game so it is at a reasonable time for the majority of viewers; Unfortunately when it is a double header, this problem will always happen, short of scheduling during a weekend afternoon where football is king at this time of the year. We are a large country with 4 time zones so there is no solution that will please everybody. Being the second game probably gave KU and Duke a larger overall audience than playing the first game, and it was the featured game; the Wiggins-Parker match up had more upside than the UK baby stars versus the MSU very good, solid, experienced but "who-remember-their-names" players.

Has the Embiid party arrived early? • Nov 13, 2013 06:12 PM

I had a long post in the "other" forum about Tarik Black. I thought that he was way overrated and that he would have a small impact at KU and so far he has done little to prove me wrong. He was a non-factor against Duke.
If you read the comments from Memphis fans, Tarik seems to be a player that relies on size rather than hard work and last night he showed exactly that. With the new foul rules, whatever advantage he had because of his size has greatly been diminished. I like Jamari's motor and hustle and I believe that going forward, Joel and Jamari will get considerably more playing time than Tarik.
Embiid was a very pleasant surprise. He played with poise and did not get flustered when he was doubled teamed; instead he calmly took his time until he was able to make a pass. If he continues to progress and improve his scoring, he might well be gone after this season. I mentioned before that his free throw shooting might be a liability at the end of games where teams might choose to play hack-a-Joel; however, he did shoot 7-10 against Louisiana Monroe, so if he concentrates, he could do well at the line; after all, free throw shooting has a larger mental component.

Xavier Henry vs Jeff Withey • Nov 13, 2013 04:54 PM

Xavier is finally showing what we though he could do. He is getting serious minutes and likely has secured a spot in the Lakers rotation.
I wish he would have posterized the unibrow instead of Whitey; on the other hand, Whitey got a lot more playing time and did have good numbers on that game.

Xavier Henry vs Jeff Withey • Nov 13, 2013 04:49 PM

KU Sports - Nov 12: Game Day Coverage • Nov 12, 2013 11:56 PM

Finally, Jayhawk fans living in Kansas and with no access to the sports channel "endorsed" by the power that be at the KU Athletic Department, will not have to go searching for an Internet feed to watch the game.
Now I must get into my game time KU gear and get ready to watch the games. Best possible outcome, MSU beats UK handily and KU beats Duke in a close (but not too close) game.

3 Big Recruits Announcing Friday • Nov 12, 2013 06:44 PM

I firmly believe that Ellis is coming back to complete his degree and fine tune his skill set. I can see where Ellis could move to the SF position and Alexander take overt the PF position. If Ellis makes it to the NBA, I can see him more as a SF than PF, and playing one year at KU the SF position would increase his versatility and improve his outside game.
I have seen videos of Okafor and Alexander and I am more impressed with Alexander; I think he has more of a power game where Okafor is more of a finesse player.
While in town, Alexander was at his GF game with several KU players; I believe there are rules regarding how often he can meet with Coach Self and this is likely the reason why he did not see him.
I think we get Alexander; Okafor and Jones go to Duke. Kansas seems to be the popular destination where Kentucky appears to have been hurt by the NIT loss; another sub-standard season by Kentucky and the squid mystique disappears, not a bad thing.
