@drgnslayr. Harvard University School of Business did a study based on thousands of games on whether to foul or not when ahead by 3 point with the clock winding down, and found that there is not statistical difference between the two approaches.
Coaches like Self that rely on strong defense will opt to defend and might actually have a small edge.

Coach Self said that the new rule was designed to compensate for bad offense at the expense of good defense, or words to that effect.
Obviously the rule is going to disproportionally and negatively affect teams like KU that play solid defense. I wonder what teams like Arkansas and VCU are going to do.
Unless the rule is tweaked, I can see a the end of games becoming either a parade to the foul line or a game played with little defense. I can understand why Coach Self is considering no red shirts; our depth might well end up being the ultimate advantage, when other teams are down to playing walk-ons, KU can still bring in quality players.

A few scattered comments.
Jamari had a good game and he might end up taking minutes from Tarik who along with Lucas had below average games. Embiid better start practicing free throws or he will become a liability and end up on the bench at the end of close games.
The PG position with Tharpe and Mason looks solid.
With Wiggins, much like McLemore last season, I feel that every time he touches the ball, the ensuing play might end up in the highlight reel...or a turnover.

Barring injury, I just don't see Cozart replacing Heaps as QB. Heaps is a very good QB that has had the misfortune of playing behind a poor Offensive Line.

Another suggestion. I would be nice if when you click on a link it opens in a new tab instead of replacing the current tab/page. In the first case, when you are done with link simply close the tab and you are right back where you were; in the second case, when you hit the back button, it has to reload the original page, you lose your position in the thread, and it takes longer to get back to your original position. Other forums I frequent have this feature and is very handy.

KUAthletics: KU vs. Fort Hays State • Nov 05, 2013 02:44 AM

@rockchalkintexas. I had those e-mail addresses but they are the generic addresses that neither the Chancellor or Zenger will ever see. If they are monitored at all, you get a boilerplate answer that means nothing.
I have a friend that thinks he might be able to get an e-mail address for someone close to Zenger; hopefully he can deliver

@drgnslayr. You said:
"I don't have a problem comparing Wiggins to anyone... I just won't easily carry him in the same light as someone like Manning even if he takes us to a NC this year. I remember Manning's entire career at KU! "

I think it is extremely unfair to compare Wiggins to Manning using this criteria. Manning and Wiggins played and will play in different eras and the 4 year superstar basketball player will not ever happen again. When Manning was in college, most every player stayed in school 4 years, where in today's environment all the superstars-to-be last only one season, and even that season is not by choice. You must also keep in mind that Wiggins will have played his "entire" college career at KU, right?
If you need a 4 year career at KLU in order to be a superstar, then Chamberlain, the best player ever at KU and Paul Pierce, the best of the last 20 years, would not be in the conversation since neither played 4 years.
Barring a change in NBA rules requiring players that do not go straight to the NBA, to stay at least 3 years, the bulk of the NBA superstar in the next 20 years will have had only one year of college basketball and maybe none. I seriously doubt you will find a NBA star that stayed in college 4 years, I don't think you can do that even now. This is the sad reality of college BBall.

KUAthletics: KU vs. Fort Hays State • Nov 04, 2013 06:50 PM

Does anyone have a link to a streaming site for tomorrow's game? ESPN3 has the game scheduled "subject to blackout" and the map shows the entire state of Kansas, which means that I your provider does not carry the "official" TW channel you, along with a big chunk of fans in the metro area and the state, are screwed.
Last time I was able to get the game on Surewest/Consolidated Communications, but I am not confident it ill be available tomorrow.
Maybe if everybody in this forum (and friends) e-mails Zenger or KU's Chancellor, something can be done about it, any idea what their e-mail addresses are?

What I miss the most is being able to reply to another post and have the reply indented and right under the original post. I find it hard to follow a "thread within thread" when the replies are spread and not contiguous.

Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan.

Canadian Coup • Nov 01, 2013 05:50 PM

Since TSN will be broadcasting the games in a "variety of platforms" including the Internet, maybe they will stream some of the games that are blacked out in the State of Kansas and the Kansas City Metro area.
On a similar note, I was able to watch the Last game on ESPN3 via Surewest in Olathe; my daughter lives in Lenexa and has AT&T as her Internet provider and the game was blacked out...go figure but I am not complaining.

@drgnslayr. Be careful with what you wish. Jaybate might join the Forum and proceed to use up all the available bandwidth and put the place out of business.

Redshirt speculation and effect • Nov 01, 2013 05:25 PM

While I agree that Frankamp's debut was not what I expected, we should not be quick to call for red shirt after one exhibition game; Conner can flat out play, Check his play with the US team in international competition where he was the leading scorer and maybe even player, playing alongside other highly ranked players.
Let's give him a few more games to show what he can do before we start penciling him in for a red shirt.
The comment that he would change status to "walk on" is utterly ridiculous, no insult intended to the poster.

@DoubleDD Adidas was a world power in sports apparel before Nike even existed. It still is the largest provider of soccer (most popular sport in the world) gear in the world..
It also the current official uniform provider for the NBA. Jaybate's claims notwithstanding, Adidas is power house in sports apparel.

Xavier has always been a class act, quiet and unassuming; his dad and brother not so much.
He has been back many times to Lawrence and has been a good ambassador for KU.
Like many players his career had a rocky start, starting with his agent driven hold up before he even played one game and put him behind other players, development wise, before the start of his first season and never quite recovered from that.
Looks like the Lakers are a good fit for him and he is starting to show flashes of his true potential; hopefully it will workout out well for him

I was able to watch the game on ESPN3 on Surewest in Olathe. My daughter has AT&T in Lenexa and got the message that the games was blocked. Go figure. Maybe Surewest is so small they forgot to turn it off. Surewest is now called Consolidated Communications or something along these lines.

The article equates Gill and Weis records but this is misleading. Gill inherited a program a couple of years removed from a BSC Bowl appearance, Weis inherited a program that had been run into the ground and needing a complete rebuild.

@globaljaybird Are we talking about the same Ed Hightower? I personally cannot stand Hightower's theatrics and melodrama and I believe most BBall fans fee the same way. You should check this link:

Ed Hightower ↗

Having said that, he was the referee for the '88 and '08 title games that KU won, so I can't really dislike him too much.

Who are you? • Oct 25, 2013 03:27 AM

I concur with posters above that the LJW decision to change policy was based solely by potential financial gain, notwithstanding assertions to the contrary by various staff writers.

The issue that is constantly overlooked is that of safety. Any cyber safety expert will tell you not to provide or post your real name on line unless you have the means to control it. Even Facebook allows you to restrict who sees or doesn't see your personal information and posts. If you are careful you can have a fairly secure experience. The same cannot be said about the new LJW site, where you cannot control who sees your posts.

At one time or another, we have all mentioned our hometowns and parts of our background in order to illustrate our point of view. During the TV/ESPN3 blackout, most every poster indicated their hometown and even their cable provider. Add to this your real name and you can see how anyone with a minimum Google background can track you and show up at your door; with all the nuts trolling the net, this is not a chance I want to take.

A few years ago, the Kansas City Star had a very lively Sports Forum and then they decided to change the format and the Forum quickly died. This is how I ended up at the LJW Forum. Looks like individuals wholly unqualified to make these type of decisions cause the death of both forums. Interesting that the feature with the most post is about this subject and the great majority of the posts are openly critical. I feel bad for Jesse and Matt that work hard to deliver quality columns only to see their readership drastically diminished.

Here in the Heart of America we have the expressions - if it ain't broke, don't fix it - and -if you can't fix it, don't break it-. The LJW did not head the first and seems caught on the later.

Big 12 Media Day • Oct 23, 2013 05:23 AM

If you ever watch HC Self's interviews or listen to his radio program, you know that one of the things that makes him such a good coach is his ability to remember every detail of previous games. Sometime he will describe specific plays from games weeks before in minute detail.

I am sure he does not need to watch tape of the last game to remember exactly how it developed.

He has never indicated he does not watch tape during the season, and it is done mostly for the benefit of players; coaches know exactly what went on during the game, players not so much and need to be reminded.

Keegan speculating on rotations. • Oct 20, 2013 04:37 AM

Based on past history, it is safe to assume that the PG position is Tharpe's to lose; I would be shocked if he is not the starter at the beginning of the season.

Keegan speculating on rotations. • Oct 20, 2013 04:27 AM

Of the players that will see potentially significant playing time and that are not bigs, i.e. Tharpe, Mason, Frankamp, Selden, White, Greene, Wigging and even Ellis, all are capable of shooting the three. I don't think scoring from outside is going to be an issue this season.

Jaybate, come home! • Oct 20, 2013 04:05 AM

JayHawkFanToo has entered the site :)

The one thing that has not been emphasized with the LJW publishing the full name is the issue of safety. At one time or another we have all posted our location and some details about our individual backgrounds. Couple this with your full name and anyone can easily find you with a search engine. With all the scammers lurking in cyber space, in today's day and age, I don't believe this is a safe practice. Even Facebook (up to a point) allows you to determine who sees your information and posts.

Amazingly enough, you can still post questions to the weekly Q&A and also to the game blog without FB verification. I imagine that loophole will be closed soon. THE LJW writers cannot be happy as the audience has dwindled to one tenth of what it was and eventually that forum will die.

There is a sense of comfort seeing familiar names in this forum.

Thanks for Setting This Up • Oct 20, 2013 03:49 AM

Thanks for providing a forum for KU sports fans. Hard to believe how much of a bone headed decision the LJW made.

At one time or another, we have all posted our location and together with the complete name, it becomes a safety issue, as anyone with minimum Google knowledge can locate you with this information.

On a separate note, I tried updating my avatar with no luck. I locate the JPG, load it and save it and after I exit, it only shows a small "x" in a box. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Is there a preferred graphics format and/or size limits or waiting period?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello KU fans, finally made it here.
Good to have a site where you don't have to sell your soul to post.
The last poster at the LJW site, please turn off the servers and lock the joint.
