So happy for Black to have a break out game today. I imagine that's a big relief for him.
Thankfully Ellis is reported okay. That guy is such a "do my job" I knew he got hit hard when he didn't get up right away, and his body language after that told me he was loopy-and of course that shot so far left-his vision was clearly impaired.
Fun win, and some of those highlights-rebound putback slam by Imbeed and that no look pass bby Mason when he left it hanging in front of the rim for the trailer to slam it home. RCJH !!!
We've been lucky with parents most of the time. I'd say parents who behave poorly are about the worst things I've encountered right next to the occasional player who plays dirty and thinks it is funny.
Boy you are right about the kids that finally score those first points. I think everyone deserves a special moment. And it is such a thrill for a kid and parents when that first bucket goes in.
I envy you being at the beginning of the adventure with your boy. Mine are in high school and they will be off to college in no time. Soon they will head out on the next great adventure without the old man around.
So enjoy it. And do me a favor. Start a thread and take us through the highlights when it is time.
When my daughter was in elementary school I coached her bBall team and the league had a great rule for that age group. Each team had exactly 10 kids. Quarters were set to six minutes. The first quarter the top players were on the court. The second 5 played each other in qtr 2.
The remaining time was divided into four, three minute periods where it was still best on best alternating with the other 5. Some times the best 5 won the games, some times times it was the bench that made the difference.
Everyone got the same playing time so you did not have a problem with anyone's parents. At the same yet there were winners and losers. Not a bad setup for elementary school kids.
I was blessed with having no nonsense coaches in high school and college. Like Self they were experts. Knowledge was superior as well as training techniques. They and the their athletes are in a hall of fame or soon will be. They demanded 100% percent effort and would verbally land on you in front of the team if you didn't make the most of your god given talent. As a result athletes reached a high % of their potential and championships abounded. It is great to see that happen to a great extent with KU bball year after year.
Wussificatjion of America abounds.
My coaches would call it like it was, and we would man up.
Even my daughters club trainer/coaches do this.
Any collegiate athlete who whines to his parents about verbal abuse and gets them involved with the school admin should just pack his bags and leave first.
So happy I missed the first half. In the second, we came out of the gate terrible, but settled down and started playing ball. I was happy with the way they fought down the stretch.
That non call on Wiggins late in the game hurt us. Instead of Wiggins on the line, Florida go the ball out of bounds. Even Dicky V was upset. That could of put us within one possession.
Loved seeing Wiggins take charge.
As stated by others- happy our boys are heading back to AFH.
I am tired of KU being in. Position where games come down to the wire against unranked teams. We should not be in that position so often.
Second-besides hating losing, I hate teams who left the conference. Self does Ex-jayhawk Tad Boyle a Favor by scheduling games. and Jayhawks bought tickets which also helped the Buffs program with a full venue and excitement. Too much help Tad decided and shut out Jayhawk purchases this year with "multi -game packages" we need to return the favor-by removing the favor. Don't play them again-take them off the schedule.
Thanks Nuleaf,
Yep, we will lose games, and as you say this is the best time of year to do that. I've had some highs and lows watching these games-some because the new rules can make a game plain ugly. The last game we were 14 up late in the game and didn't put the game away-just the opposite. That is one of my biggest pet peaves. I keep telling myself to remember what HCBS said at late night. These guys are young and you'll drive yourself crazy if you expect great play every time out (or something like that)
And Dude, my sympathy you work with mr Howell.
Try to remember this guy roots against a program that wins 30 plus times a year. His winters must be very depressing.
They must have watched our games.
I did not enjoy watching these last two games. In fact, I recorded the last game while I watched football, and checked in now and then. I didn't like what I saw until it appeared we had built a14 point lead to ice the game. Then I looked and saw the game was down to two possessions and even less as it went down to the wire. Ellis bailed out Mason's poor decision marking and play.
Self was right-these guys are young. And I am not as high on Mason as I was before this tourney.
JR,
Keep checking in. My father is struggling too. Nice to have this program to follow and enjoy. It give us something positive to share. RCJH.
Brooks, where do you live?
Great post
Nice post Wissox.
I started one myself and soon realized it would rival a Jaybate post in length, so I hit discard. ( no malice! I Learned a lot from those posts! but about halfway through a part 2 I would give up and scroll down.)
Anyway, let's just say I am thankful for Jayhawk memories starting with the ku relays when I was 16 and every year since.
Agreed,
I appreciate the kids talent, and games like this are giving a little school some sunshine. I'm okay with that. Maybe that's how some programs get exposure. Zero d and run and gun.
However, and asterisk would be nice-these games are not apples to apples with most ncaa play.
@tundra,
Did I read that you lived in Alaska?
I would add there was a solid white snow/ice lines several inches wide running the length of the field just outside of the hash marks. Those were visible, and you could see players slipping on both sides all over the field. I would fire the grounds keeper, but maybe he had his orders.
Terrible conditions that should not have been there...but ISU executed.
Thanks tundra. This morning when I read my rant I realized I came off like I was all sour grapes so I yanked my post.
I will just state again. Yes we stunk it up AGAIN.
BUT, why didn't they use a tarp to keep the field dry before the freezing weather hit?
Because they wanted ice on the field. Such a bush /league move.
I for one have a huge problem with the horrendous condition of the field. I grew up playing football and competing in track and field in the 60's and 70's in winter conditions.
Nothing much you do but accept conditions at jr and sr high football- even colleges back thentried to adjust for conditions
But George Toma changed that for professional football in the 70s with the chiefs and it trickled down to college- and high school since then.
Playing on ice at ISU WAS PLANNED!!!
Tarps have been used for decades to keep water/dew or whatever off the field prior to a competition.
I got a taste of this cr*p in the 70's at a big 8 track championship at Nebraska and the high jump approach-our top rated jumpers had to run through mud because they had long approaches vs short approach Nebraska jumpers, but I won't go into that unless someone wants to have that dialog later.
No way the field has that much ice unless they let it get wet, and very wet and freeze.
Yes, we played badly. But the field was in terrible, terrible shape. As a guy who played in many winter games with old style football shoes- ISU made the field that way on purpose. Yes ,we played poorly, and yes, we should have adjusted prior to kickoff. But I can't remember seeing a field with so much ice on it.
Can anyone else? And with so many games being played every year in the cold by so many teams, doesn't anyone else wonder about these ice rink conditions?
Wow Jesse,
I'm impressed with how many questions you took on.
And I must say your take on things are pretty objective.
Many thanks to you and the kubuckets team.
While were having fun with lyrics, loved Hendrix, one of my favorite covers was Cheech Marin on Purple Haze,,,"scuze me, while I kiss this guy"
All the more incentive to drive the family over to see ku play. Cheaper tickets.
Hoiberg was high up in an NBA franchise when he jumped at the chance to take this job. I had the feeling he was going to be in Ames a long time.
I've been watching in Texas. It happens to me, but not that often. Maybe two or three times a game.
About the ESPN3 blackout for commercials. Sure would be nice to hear commentators rather than no sound at all. Or maybe they could scroll other scores across the screen.
Yes, I thought Mason shot too much - I was expecting him to dish a bit more.
Auto check gets me again. slaying = playing
I got spoiled watching us play so well against Duke. I expected more out of ku slaying a small school in AFH. I felt like we took a step backwards. Our perimeter defense was poor. Of course Ellis continues to dominate games and Embiid totally came out last night. I noticed Self didn't play Greene in the first half. When he rode the bench the first 10 minutes of the second half I knew he was in the Self dog house. No play time in the mop up just put an exclamation point on it. This morning I see that HCBS cited off court issues.
Hopefully the lesson is learned and he's playing again next game.
I hope all goes well. Check in when you can.
"Success is when preparation meets opportunity."
He didn't coin it, but he said it after winning the NCAA Championship in 1988. Our own Danny Manning.
PS
What a great week for KU. Big win on a big stage over Duke! Our football team beats WV to end the streak we kept hearing about. And a top recruit ends the hat drought for ku.
RCJH
I propose a "bucket slush fund" (pun intended) to be passed around to reward the people who saved this community.
I propose we set up a PO box, or PayPal system for that matter to offset expenses, time and effort so we can reward this team. Maybe it's just a nice dinner out for the team and dates. If the coin is big enough we could designate monies spent are for ku sports events only, not limited to but preferably basketball. Maybe regular season or post season play.
Worst case it goes to a charitable fund of their choice in their names.
If that doesn't work, the team can just show up at designated spot in Lawrence or KC with a designated hat of the day and we will find you and buy you a cocktail.
Thanks for all you do.
RCJH
So happy you gifted and talented gents came to the rescue. And you keep going above and beyond. Me thinks we should set up a "slush fund bucket" pun intended,
Maybe it buys a couple of dinners at a minimum, better yet some nice tickets to a KU game, maybe even post season game/games. To be democratic we could give founders the votes.
What say you fellow bucket heads?
Great win team. Nice to have that streak over with.
Party tonight, prepare this week, show up again next weekend.
Thanks approx, YES the white text is easier for these old eyes to read than grey. Also, meant to tell you I love AFH in the background.
So appreciate all the work on this site. My 2 cents - this is a bit harder to read. Don't know if the font is smaller and /or the color contrast is off.
Yes!!!!!!!
Welcome to Jayhawk Nation!!!!

Wiggins before and after haircut.
Thanks for sharing. Way back in the day we used ice to keep swelling down. Some guys only needed it now and them - some did it frequently. I doubt there is an injury involved.
At least that little autocorrect milked a few replies-
Ba doom boom!
Ditto,
The refs need to backs off quick or NCAAB will loose a lot of viewership. The broadcasters said AFH was fired up during the 15-5 run, and the free throws let the air out of the building.
Decent location.
To the point of Kansas talent pool. In the mid 70's when we were in the big 8 kansas had a windfall of talent- David Haynes, buce Adams, Cromwell, Laverne smith, billy campfield, etc that has never been repeated to my knowledge. Most the hs football talent these days is texas, Florida, and California- and a few private schools elsewhere, check the high school football rankings. I live in Houston, we have numerous perennial powerhouse teams here - the talent is at another level. Playing at baylor where relatives can see a lot of games is a big draw compared to teams located out of state. Even if our program was decent lactation plays a big part of the equation.
HEM
i like the block/charge change too.
I did not understand how much the hand checks would change the game until I watched these last two games. I was shocked to see some of these calls. Ticky tack fouls, and the flow of the game wasn't there. Hopefully the refs back off on some of those calls.
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Dragon, Huge Cecil B fan, not to mention Yule Brenner and Chuck Heston. But most likely they were Bruin fans.
RCT- had biz today in Austin but totally blanked on the ku game this weekend. I should have stopped at 6 th street before I left town. Enjoy the game and festivities- 6th was one big Halloween party 2 years ago.
And to the rest above GREAT POSTS.
Don't we know the rules and keep these kids informed. This is plain stupid. Even if it is a slap on the wrist it reflects bad on our program.
