@Crimsonorblue22
Wow, that can't be healthy at all. Seriously he needs to figure out he is giving An advisory free rent in his head. If he is aware of that, maybe he can let some of it go and get back to a positive outlook about his team that exceeds negative feelings about something else.

February 5: News Headlines Digest • Feb 07, 2014 04:58 AM

When you are not part of the equation ( as in a run at the title) it isn't a surprise see short sighted fans think this way.
Such fans were never competitors. If a coach ever told his players, "we can't win the title so let's lay down and make sure our rival doesn't." He isn't worthy of being a coach IMHO.

February 5: News Headlines Digest • Feb 07, 2014 04:38 AM

I think it has to due with freshmen with so much raw talent and lack of experience. How much quicker do they have to learn the program right out of high school rather than be a part of the system?

Just think how much time last years squad were in our program learning to play behind other starters. I think he is smart to take it easy on them, rather than act like they've had years to learn without being in the spotlight.

February 6: News Headlines Digest • Feb 07, 2014 04:28 AM

Geez, can't spell check recognize Martin in the same post and not change it to MartinEZ. I am not good typing on my iPad and this thing is killing me. Approx or Julian- I am flying into KC next weekend and will be at the TCU game.
Any chance one of you IT wizards can program my iPad to write whit what I think, not guess what I type?

@drgnslayr
You are on of my favorite posters and I feel bad for you or anyone who was going to KU during some bad years. I hope you've had your share of AFH games in good times since. I was spoiled. In the mid 70's we went to the final four in bBall, had championship bBall teams, two FB bowl games, and track and swimming OWNED the conference.

I have admit I am pissed at programs that left the big 12, but more so the teams that left the original Big 8. Mizzou is on the top of that list. So I am okay, rather enjoy they aren't relevant in bBall anymore- because they aren't in bBall even in a conference lead with one royalty team.

I must admit they did something special in football this year. A subject we aren't worthy to talk about-I wonder iF they are real or if it was a special year-time will tell.

As for Martin, liked him, respected him, and sorry he left the conference. IMHO Martinez was my favorite behind Hartman. And as great as they were, can you imagine Snyder landing at KU FB instead of KSU. Oh, for a time machine.

Carrot in Front, Bullwhip in Back... • Feb 06, 2014 07:34 PM

CB,
Another observation. Very few kids today will do more that show up at practice. They give 100% at practice, but you won't find them running stairs afterwards or on weekends. You won't see them shooting free throws, working on dribbling skills on their own. You can tell them, do the extra work and you'll play at the next level. I don't know if its the x-box or what.
With AAU clubs you can see who has already done the work. I just don't see kids doing the extra work to catch up.

Carrot in Front, Bullwhip in Back... • Feb 06, 2014 07:24 PM

CB,

You are right, it comes from within. But I will qualify that with personal experience. When I was very young I learned to play things safe. I had little self confidence. I was not a competitor and an average athlete at best. But I was pushed by a father who knew I had more to give, just as you are pushing kids to reach their potential.

At first with me it was baby steps. better athleticism, more confidence, and then came more competitiveness. More effort, extra work, it all snowballed.

Success begets success, and competitiveness can grow with some.
So some are born with it, for me, it happened in my teens.

So I'll bet you are helping some of your kids get it.

Thanks much Tundra. I will check it out!

We win at Baylor • Feb 05, 2014 03:33 AM

@HighEliteMajor
I love it when players have breakout games and have shouted that out in the past-so thanks HEM for reminding me what was going well. I guess I got hypnotized by the announcers and graphics. And yes, these guys were refreshing.
22 same to you.

Happy with the win!

Compilation of Stats Sites • Feb 05, 2014 03:17 AM

One thing I miss when checking on a game not televised is box scores during the game on ESPN is half time minutes. When I see low scores or attempts for a player I check and normally see 2, maybe 3 fouls. I have no idea if the player played 5 minutes or 15, explaining low production or low minutes-just a suggestion to espn.

We win at Baylor • Feb 05, 2014 03:12 AM

Yep, liked the win. And Just finished watching TCU vs UT here in Texas. TCU had then on the ropes, just couldn't finish. Hopefully it wore them out and UT drops a game soon.

We win at Baylor • Feb 05, 2014 02:13 AM

We has no frosh. No shoes. This autocorrect slams me again. We had 3 frosh, no scores.

We win at Baylor • Feb 05, 2014 02:10 AM

After last years 3 game skid I was nervous about tonight.
We played badly at Texas and with inexperience I was concerned it would remain in our young heads.

And baylor was coming off a big win, and had KU coming to play them at home. I was nervous about momentum.
Just before the half. We has frosh no shoes.

Wigs hits the halfcourt shot at the half time buzzer and I like the score separation. And for the most part we played well and extended the lead. Nice to watch without so much anxiety tonight.

Congrats boys, and HCBS nice adjustment to smother Heslif.

INTERSECTION SOUFFLE! • Feb 04, 2014 08:55 PM

Did not know that. Nice info for a trivia question.

INTERSECTION SOUFFLE! • Feb 04, 2014 08:43 PM

Early in the year I said the pendulum swung to far in the opposite direction. Some of these games seem okay, and some are ridiculous. It scares me to think what we will see from the refs in March. I just hope the refs KU gets are okay.

February 3: News Headlines Digest • Feb 03, 2014 10:29 PM

@drgnslayr
I was guilty of innocent fun and a lot worse back in the day.Lucky for me I was treated with kid gloves. No doubt those cops are long retired. Maybe I need to write a check to the LPD retirement fund as thanks for the free passes.

And no telling what a disaster social media would have made things for many of us.

February 3: News Headlines Digest • Feb 03, 2014 04:19 PM

I will never forget Joel getting slammed to the floor and no call. I had seats close to the action last year and saw Withey take a beating in Austin as well.

Shane said "Wilson (Palance) was fast, fast on the draw."
Shane was wounded, but walked away the victor. We need to beat Texas in AFH. Maybe with finesse AND muscle.

Carrot in Front, Bullwhip in Back... • Feb 02, 2014 02:53 PM

I took it that you were a gal, so I should have said something non-gender like "folks". Btw, my daughter plays club bBall and my son quit playing in jr high. It's my daughter who watches games with me. Took her to Austin for the game last year-so glad we didn't go yesterday.

Carrot in Front, Bullwhip in Back... • Feb 02, 2014 04:36 AM

@Crimsonorblue22
Didn't mean to step on a toe. Just that defense is a big part of many players game, some are much bigger on D.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU @ UT - Feb 1 • Feb 02, 2014 04:21 AM

WHY did the refs not see the total Slam to the ground of Embiid when he got tangled with the UT bruiser? When you watched it on the replay it was as ugly as I've ever seen.

Last year against UT, our bigs got slammed with no calls as well..

From then OUR game sucked so much I quit watching at the half. Wake up and leave this behind us.

Carrot in Front, Bullwhip in Back... • Feb 02, 2014 02:01 AM

Gents,
Just want to point out sometimes great competitors play phenomenal defense and don't score much.

What We Have Here Is a Failure to Compete • Feb 02, 2014 01:57 AM

Last year I was in the drum watching KU struggle, but they turned it around late. This year I Passed that game up, because I had a rare opportunity to be in AFH in a few weeks. I am very happy I wasn't there today. In fact, we looked so bad I turned it off at the half and did chores while the DVR ran just in case I saw something in the final score worthy of watching. I hope we got it out of our system.
And thanks to ISU -they did us a favor today.

Why I Could Root For Texas • Feb 01, 2014 09:43 PM

I had a frat brother named Sugar Bear back in the 70's and haven't seen him since so I'm afraid I don't know who you are talking about.

Why I Could Root For Texas • Feb 01, 2014 08:48 PM

I may be with huba huba, but that girl is VA VA VOOM!!!

And NCAA champ, babe, and likely future Olympian (would have been a slam dunk if summer Olympics had been 2013) Andrea Guebelle

Great idea Jaybate,
I for one would also like off season interviews for other sports. Football with Sayers, Cromwell, Riggins, QB John H. Track with Oerter, Ryan, Mills, C Wiley, and

Best of all, if you have a clue when the bus. Arrives at the DRUM and catch them there.
RCJH

January 30: Our Daily Threads • Jan 31, 2014 04:40 AM

And I did not address autographs. Don't know anything about that. If you know where to be or who to be with after?

January 30: Our Daily Threads • Jan 31, 2014 04:38 AM

PW

Last year we got to the drum(Texas) early (as in they opened the doors about an hour early) for the team for a walk thru shoot around. We were reluctant to approach /or call to the players as we didn't want to disrupt them, but I could walk right up to the front row and baseline for photos.

My daughter was a huge Withey fan- I think he might have given us a photo an hour before the game but didn't risk it.

My advise is arrive early, get in line early and when they open up walk down behind the KUbench.

Message of the Day Quotes Part III • Jan 28, 2014 05:25 PM

@globaljaybird thanks Global. he was a huge KU bBall fan. Sure miss talking to him about it. The smartest thing I've done lately was fly back and take him to Late Night at the PHOG.Very fitting our last event was a trip to AFH.

Message of the Day Quotes Part III • Jan 28, 2014 02:44 PM

My father said this of his father. "The older I got, the smarter he got."

Conquering Turnovers • Jan 25, 2014 03:08 PM

I need to clarify something. the TO's that drive me nuts are unforced. Most happen when a player (intended recipient) does not know where the ball is. I love run and gun and fast breaks, they are one of the best things about the game. But many times something is forced when the play isn't there. As a result you can end up with a two possession swing. I don't think these kids make a bad pass because they lack skill. It is bad judgement most the time, and some times bad communication. I get the TO because a player zigs instead of zags and the passer could not anticipate, but too many times a TO is just a bad pass. Case in point bad Tyshawn. Loved the guy, but he was my poster boy for bad decisions. One of my favorite quotes from HCBS was something like, "he does stuff you can't coach, and sometimes you wonder if he's ever been coached."

@jaybate 1.0
Run on, JB. When I first moved to SoCal, played Torrey Pines and had a couple of drinks at KC BBQ-(this wasn't long after Top Gun made it famous.) It was a warm welcome for a homesick Jayhawk.

As for FT Worth, the last time I was in Billy Bobs, Danny and the Miracles were just starting the 1988 run. Memory lane baby.

Conquering Turnovers • Jan 25, 2014 04:47 AM

@HighEliteMajor
I know I am,dealing with KU buckets royalty here so I really appreciate your opinion and you are kind to refrain shooting me down outright.

Above all things I hate unforced TO's at ANY LEVEL. Even coaching young elementary school girls.

To me, there are far too many TO's on many KU teams. Even in my old days of pickup games in my 30's, an ILL ADVISED PASS has no place when a game is close.

Sorry, just a real sore spot with me.

Hoping we keep learning and getting better. RCJH.

Picking the Elite 8 • Jan 25, 2014 02:47 AM

Y'all make a great read. I need to get busy watching more games outside of the big 12. Still find it strange that the big 12 and big 10 aren't twelve and ten.

Conquering Turnovers • Jan 25, 2014 02:13 AM

@drgnslayr
Great read. May I add knowledge of the clock. Sometimes players loose track of time and force a bad pass because they think the clock is running out for that possession.

Another example it time as in you have a nice run going and a fast break may be possible- to make a risky pass as if the play has to be made NOW. I've seen plenty of players make a bad pass on a fast break as if that is the winning bucket in the game with 2 seconds left when there is plenty of time in the game. If it isn't wide open it is smarter to hold up and play it safe.

@ralster
I am a big believer every high school senior should watch Private Ryan before they graduate.

Jan 23: News Headlines Digest • Jan 23, 2014 05:41 PM

Glottal??? And I swear I haven't been drinking.

Jan 23: News Headlines Digest • Jan 23, 2014 05:34 PM

@globaljaybird glottal call you on that Patton quote. If George C. Scott quoted Patten correctly. In the movie he narrates a scene describing a slave whispering a warning to a victor, "All glory is fleeting."

Jan 23: News Headlines Digest • Jan 23, 2014 05:30 PM

@globaljaybird
Remember Nate and the Kings well. Which reminds me of a change in bBall equipment. I got to play exhibition at half time on that court once. one thing about those goals back in the day. They had zero give and the balls were really inflated making for a lot of misses and rebounds. These days the breakaway goal that gives when you dunk hard means a bit of give-helps the shooters touch. I'm okay with that, just saying the goals have changed.

Jan 18 Post Game Roundup: KU vs OSU • Jan 23, 2014 04:39 PM

@jaybate 1.0 thanks for the explanation of the Grail. That was a good read. (Plus, my son and I are huge fans of that Indy movie.)

And by the way Jaybate, yet another PHOF on your part.

Amazing imagination and vivid imagery Jaybate.

Like the Chi-O's for many reasons. Are SAE's included for proximity to Potter, or do you like/dislike them?

Jan 18 Post Game Roundup: KU vs OSU • Jan 19, 2014 10:50 PM

PHOF photo. I LOVED it. Even my wife KSU gal laughed out load.

Tin roof,,,rusted

@ Paris. The game was on here in Houston. Espn has two bits on the game today. Fun to watch although I did not like the gray uniforms; stick to blue, white, or red.

Anyway, great win against a good team on the road.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU @ OU - Jan 8 • Jan 09, 2014 04:01 PM

Knew you'd name Selden. I was impressed by that play as well as his game for the first time this season. We seem to halve a revolving door with players having a breakout game.

I hope we see them all playing this well at the same time going forward.

Duopoly Hypothesis for slayr: • Jan 04, 2014 03:29 PM

Interesting fan,

Just about any scenario I've seen has KU as part of the new system-I guess something will morph sometime which is okay if KU remains relevant.

Yes, our defense wasn't there. Toleio is undefeated though and would not go away. They are a very good team and they will make noise in the tourney. I'm just glad we faced them in AFH.
It was fun to watch at times but Toledo impressed me-they never quit. Liked our offense but man at times our defense just wasn't there.

Al Oerter quote • Dec 26, 2013 02:41 PM

@Jaybate 1.0
Could it be my KU buckets Christmas present is the return of Jaybate? Either way love the Al Oerter quote. To help educated my bBallbrothers, Al Oerter won FOUR OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS in the discus.he doesn't get much recognition IMHO.
