@drgnslayr thanks for the note about gradual change. That could work for me.

I will make a comment about nutrition. I was so scrawny as a high school soph I could hardlyin walk and chew gum. Two years later I graduated at 180 and still very lean for my6' 2" build and we lifted constantly.

My frosh year at KU I ate on the training table. LTake that X Physical Maturity X increased Training X more and advanced weight lifting and I was a beast.very explosive and agile. (Not a ball player but our bBall bigs were just plain slow with little explosiveness. I KNOW the weight training is much better per coaches I know still at the DIv 1 level. I know the food back in the day was good, and I'm sure there have been improvements. You can make sure the athletes do the workouts and lift right-but the diet is still a wild card-not everyone follows the program to the letter.

@drgnslayr
Wow,
This is a big 180 turn from what I've been doing and I carry the extra weight to prove it. Thanks for going into detail.
I've got to admit I don't think I can go cold turkey on my diet but it would be easy to get the fruits and veggies to a bigger %. We don't have a garden but that could change.
Thanks for the help and Jaybate your backup testimonial is appreciated. Can I wait to put this plan in action until March madness is over?.? I don't know it is such a fun time of year.

@drgnslayr
Wow, I have a similar background of high impact athletics well into my 30's and have had increasing back, hip, and knee problems the past 20 years. I wonder if you can elaborate more specifics about your diet because I would like to try it.

@JayHawkFanToo
Oklahoma beat us twice that year-I still remember the score was tied 50 - 50 at the half of the championship game.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs TT - March 5 • Mar 07, 2014 03:47 AM

Tarik,
This Jayhawk would like to thank you for coming to KU.
What a fine young man you are. Thanks for all you did for your team and Jayhawk Nation. Best of luck the rest of the season and beyond. RCJH.

Yep,
Rest Embid, even use sparingly in the B12 tourney as needed.

March 4: News Headlines Digest • Mar 05, 2014 01:32 AM

That is a great thought Dragon. I can't make it this time but perhaps another trip will materialize in the future-as in I win the lotto and reserve a hotel floor or two at a March Madness weekend and with a block of tickets invite KU bucketeers on my dime. RCJH

@globaljaybird
That is awesome about your dad in the 20's. And great stuff for your family going forward. My father took me to the KU Relays as a young teen. I dreamed about competing there and with hard work and great coaching made it.

Guys and gals,
I am neck deep in this in Houston with my own kids in high school athletics in a very very competitive athletic and academic HS world.

THIS does happen down here, and so other places too.
This week I saw a FRESHMAN win a 100 meter race with a goatee that was full like he was 21 years old. This is next to a kid that looks 10 years old.
Some of these HS boys look and have the build of grown men. I look back at photos of my KU teammates and they look like sophmores in high school.
Some of it is above board, some involves bad decisions.

YAEL,
You need your a** kicked and I am wearing the boots to do it. Actually I am 20 years past it so I've passed the privilege to my nephew. A recent KSU linebacker who agrees you need it. So learn how to write with respect.

Skilled, Willful, Arrogant and... • Mar 02, 2014 09:28 PM

Last year I was impressed that he came back to play for OSU. This year he has shown us all the REhawk wrote. So happy we don't have this kind of cr*p going on at KU, and if I were an NBA coach I wouldn't risk him.

Haven't seen the commercial either but know one of the 60 mil family that was a KU kid. I guess he got out voted.

Talk about not taking care of the ball. I'm not taking anything away from OSU other than continued flops from Smart because they played hard, but KU threw away the ball time after time after time. Luckily a couple of losses by possible title contenders gave us the title outright tonight. A 4 way tie for second place with 10 wins and two games left can't catch 13 wins. Hated to lose to Smart tonight but we do own the big 12 title outright now and HCBS should be able to get it through some youngsters to TAKE CARE OF THE BALL.

I want to cry! • Mar 01, 2014 02:40 PM

Being a track and field guy, I feel the need to point out it overlaps bBall and thus can help with the big end of bBall season void. Our girls return some top athletes from last years NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM, and the boys team has been on the rise. The new track is already installed and verified world class-hopefully the infrastructure around it is ready for the outdoor season.

Vegas would be fun-a round robin set of 5 minute interviews for all and then individuals vote on a big screen matching actual photos to ku buckets site name/avatars.

Thanks for weighing in on a positive interaction with WSU fans. I don't live in Kansas anymore but I read comments from the papers back there. That is why I thought here we go again, because I traveled to Wichita frequently the last time the program was strong and it was,a bandwagon group at that time.

February 28: News Headlines Digest • Feb 28, 2014 05:17 PM

That's just one thing about Self I like. He is a class act and takes the high road when reporters ask him questions about coaches and players from other teams.

February 28: News Headlines Digest • Feb 28, 2014 05:15 PM

@icthawkfan316
Thanks for the education. You are dead on about sustaining excellence. Look what happened to Butler once Brad Stevens left. I recall WSU peaked a few decades ago and we got an earful about it at the time. Then they dropped off and things got quiet again. It would be interesting to chart the home game attendance over the past 30 years.

Platoon Tarik and Perry? • Feb 28, 2014 02:18 PM

@jaybate 1.0
You had an advantage going left. Back in the day, most kids wrote right-handed and played sports right-handed. That leads to a preference of driving right and jumping off your left leg on a right hand layup. A good move to the left was rare. These days they teach going both ways and defending it.

I don't have the bball IQ so many do on these threads.
In general I would push the ball up quickly and pound the paint. When they start collapsing kick it out for the trey. If that isn't falling work it back in and alternate a drive to the bucket with pull up jumpers when challenged. And be all means cover Smart like a blanket to deny him the ball.

@drgnslayr
Agreed, we are way way deep. Run them into the ground.

Joe Lunardi has lost it • Feb 26, 2014 10:11 PM

We use machines to shock the wheat. I've seen footage of other countries still hitting the wheat against a stone and throwing it up in the air to separate the chaff. Maybe JoJo has seen it first hand?

@JayHawkFanToo VERY TRUE

I repeated a few of my dad's sayings at his service -fathers have a ton of great advice-some with humor right?
How about "Hurry every time you think about it."
He also told me in the 70's. " Nobody will conquer the US, it will be destroyed from within." Not to get into a political, but I never thought I'd see what has come of the country I grew up in and it makes me feel bad for the next generation and beyond. So, another good one was " the older my father got, the smarter he was."

Platoon Tarik and Perry? • Feb 25, 2014 02:59 PM

@lincase There is a good twilight zone episode about a man and his dog at the gates.

Ugh- I hope this doesn't get stuck in my head like a song.

Booker was making cocky expressions from the bench midway through the game. I guess he hasn't heard, "He who laughs last, laughs best."

Gosh this is so sweet. 10 straight. So happy I got to see one of our wins in AFH against a Big 12 team this year.

TRob • Feb 24, 2014 03:43 PM

Great visibility for a fine young man. Here's to more moments like that TRob. RCJH.

Hartman was coaching while I was at KU. I was always amazed how he got so much out of his players. I have tons of respect for him-he is easily my favorite Big 8 coach outside of KU coaches.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs UT - Feb 22 • Feb 24, 2014 02:24 AM

Trice??? Meant twice, but trice works too.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs UT - Feb 22 • Feb 24, 2014 02:22 AM

@Crimsonorblue22
I was there for the TCU game last week myself, only the second visit in decades. As 22 says, ya'll need to get back to AFH soon. If it is a really difficult/ special trip, you might consider waiting for Naismith's Rules to be available. OR, make the trip trice. RCJH

Gosh it was so fun to see KU hitting on all 8 cylinders after getting beat up at Texas. I loved watching this game.
A sideline highlight of the bench after "a DR J Esk dunk" was also a treat. Great Tharpe imitation of the Rio robot in forward and reverse was another treat.

Pre UT and KU Keys to the Game • Feb 21, 2014 09:32 PM

@drgnslayr
I was at the drum last year and they beat the heck out of Withey, I remember a forearm to the head they didn't call.
This year Ridley was out of control, and in both games the refs let it go. I can't remember other years but definitely the last two years it was like UT had the green light to hammer KU.

Mizzery Analysis by H.E.M. • Feb 21, 2014 05:54 PM

The last game I watched ku play @ mizzery they scanned the rafters. There in all it's glory was a banner that simply read "ncaa tournament". I thought I missed something and backed up the DVR. Sure enough that's what it read. I will try and post it.

PASTA-GATE @ OU • Feb 20, 2014 02:36 AM

PASTA-GATE @ OU • Feb 20, 2014 01:48 AM

Three Sooners Penalized For Too Much Pasta ↗

This is absurd. How much time and money did the NCAA and OU waste on this, let alone distract and hassle some young student athletes.

Jaybate, I always think I am walking on sacred ground when I respond to you and a few other "royalty buckets names" out of the gate when you post. None the less I will expose my bear neck and give my 2 cents.

I agree we were flat and the TT team has been rising- the old nothing to lose we are on the run and they shot 3's like never before- the only chance they had if KU was also flat which we were.

I am so happy we finished with a W. Period. Short and sweet, I will retire and read up on there's thoughts in the AM.

Welcome to Hedge Row Country • Feb 16, 2014 01:07 PM

Global,
Nice to hear the drive through trick and subsequent turnaround. Something I'll remember.

My old mutt "wonderdog" was pushing 15 and winding down a few years back. After losing 4 dogs in my youth including one hit by a car in front of my eyes (my poor mother made the mistake of no leash that day) I made a counter move and got a second dog to help the transition. I had the kids pick her out and name her.

When the mutt's time was up our pup sure was a blessing to make up the void. Turns out, she is the best dog I've ever had.

OAD or the sleeping Giant. • Feb 16, 2014 12:52 PM

I was in AFH yesterday, a rare treat for me. Of course we started out very flat but started to take control late in the first half. We went from no defense to solid defense. I was lucky to be on hand to see one of our players have a breakout game. Perry has done well in a lot of games and disappeared in a few, but it was really exciting to be there when he scored a career high.

Selden impressed me as well, and Wiggins did too. Lots of nice lobs for slam dunks including Black and Jamari.
Can't wait to watch the game on tape.

Off subject, but I am hoping they showed this on TV. Barbara Eden was at the game-they showed her on the video board several times, the first time the crowd cheered loudly and she responded with her magic move, folded he arms, and dipped he chin dip-AFH laughed and applauded loudly. That woman is 80, and looked like a sexy 50 year old. I have to say as a boy she was my # 1 TV love in front of MTM and Bewitched.

Rush, Withey, and Kevin Young were behind the KU bench as well and they showed them late in the game.

RCJH.

Is There a Bounty on KU OADs? • Feb 13, 2014 12:32 PM

Solid above average college player is specific to him as a freshman. The point I was making was these studs develop over time.

Is There a Bounty on KU OADs? • Feb 13, 2014 05:06 AM

I will say this about that from what I saw in the 70's. Nolan Cromwell came to KU because we said he could run Track as well as play Football. In that day, he started playing with the Frosh team and my friends on the team were in awe of him. By the end of the season he started for our Varsity team. Solid, above average college player. Two years later at 21 he was college all American status-at the college level, a few years int the NFL made it to pro-bowl.
It takes time to develop- even super stars take time to develop.

@Crimsonorblue22
Bottom line I was more impressed with his leg spread given the era he ran/jumped in. I would like to compare his sprint times to other 7 footers. These kids are so much more explosive thanks to training like Hudy gives them. Still, I think Wilt as a sprinter would hold up quite well to kids these days given the advances made in the past 50 years.

I posted on another string that Self lays down the law as needed for out of control individuals to the point of losing games as needed. I admire him for that and have lived through it as a KU athlete in another sport. It can cost a team dearly, and hopefully teams learn the lesson soon enough to keep in line and win respective conference titles, advance to significant post season success, etc.

Either way a coach like this teaches life lessons that will serve these young men throughout their lives.

I was fortunate to have a father, coaches, and others who did the same for me.

Wilt high jumped 6' 6" with a scissor kick landing in sand. Well above average for a scissor kick as it would be jumping at the height of his neck, but other athletes who had mastered the role could jump over their heads and land in sand safely. Still 6' 6" was a great jump, but he could have been better if he mastered the role.

BIRGers here? • Feb 13, 2014 04:22 AM

Not that I am the norm, but when we shine I am floating on air, I am likely to post.

When we are our worst enemy and just suck, I am very likely to post.

And when I see dirty play, and/or very poor officiating either way, I am likely to post.

And when a post by Jaybate, HEM, Dragon, and Globsl among others post something special as they often do, I am tempted, but don't always post.

Great start to a thread Dylan's.

I get to make the 800 mile trip north to AFH for a rare visit on Saturday. No doubt I'll be moved to post after that.

Freshmen Fairy Tale • Feb 11, 2014 08:57 PM

Agreed. 14-4 has a good chance of winning the conference.
We may have a small cushion, but it is too small. I hope the rest our injured boys get the next two games is all they need.

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU @ KSU - Feb 10 • Feb 11, 2014 08:51 PM

@drgnslayr
While watching a number of things were frustrating, including the threes they were hitting and the ones we missed. But, I was surprised by the box score when I check it today- a lot more disparity than I remember seeing.

Huggie Bear's Bonus • Feb 09, 2014 03:53 AM

I have to admit I like Huggins. He helped elevate KSU when they needed it. And that helped the B12. (For that matter I liked Martin for the same reason-and I did enjoy the FM stares after a bad KSU play.)
Anyway happy with the W and the due respect Huggins gives the KU program.
Another W, and KSU W over UT gives us another game lead in the title race. Thanks Wildcats!
