UCONN WINS • Apr 08, 2014 03:44 AM

I give coach Cal credit for incredible success. That said I would love to see him leave NCAA ball for the NBA.

UCONN WINS • Apr 08, 2014 03:22 AM

Thank you UCON.

Will Bill Self be the KU coach after 2017? • Apr 07, 2014 08:35 PM

@JayHawkFanToo
I'd say cuse OR zona was his year.

Thanks for posting that. My wife framed that photo for me.

Figure out someway to have the screen actually lit up with Kentucky wins for the full effect.

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 06, 2014 08:39 PM

I am taking 1/2 of each pill. And I honestly believe we had the team with a good chance, but we lost Embiid

Critiquing Florida • Apr 06, 2014 04:46 AM

The day started okay with a ucon win as I was hoping to knock the SEC out of the final and have Wisconsin take out UCON in the final. So the lesser of two evils-don't think I'll watch, but hope UCON takes it cause I am so tired of SEC noise here in Texas.

@Crimsonorblue22 thanks crimson. He passed this December and I miss talking ku bBall with him after every game. At least we got to go to late night at the PHOG this year. That's my best last memory.

Thanks for the scouting report Wissox and best of luck today!

I am jealous. I was so glad I passed on the VCU game. I hope you did too.
Hard to believe that squad played so well and so poorly the same weekend.

My father was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. As a 50 year celebration I bought him a ticket to join us on vacation in Anchorage. Dad was a big KU fan and knew who Mario the recruit was when he got on the plane in Kansas City. The first thing dad did when he got off the plane at the Anchorage airport was point Mario out and tell me all about him. We debated about walking up to him, but decided not to thinking it might be illegal for an alum to speak to him???
Anyway Mario inked with KU, and were there to see his shot in San Antonio. A great full circle

@JRyman I have the SI in my hands, dated April 11,1988. On the cover It says "OH, DANNY BOY! Inside a lot of Wizard of Oz jokes are made.

Earlier games are covered. I found a great quote from Duke's Coach K yelling to the court,
"Take care of the f---ing ball".

I also have the KC Star from April 6th. Nothing about the Miracles-so I wonder if KU came up with that.

And by the way, we have two Helms Championships hanging in the rafters from before the NCAA days so the count is five. When people say they don't count I remind them the tourney field was much smaller during the UCLA run-I think 32 at the most, maybe even 16.

April 4th, 1988 Discuss • Apr 04, 2014 01:59 PM

@wissoxfan83
Most likely that statue was Jimmy Green which stands in front of the original law school building-it has been part of quite a few pranks.
As for me, I was still living in KC in 1988 but could not get tickets, so watched at home and then went downtown to celebrate after the win. I DID have tickets in 86 and saw us get robbed in Reunion arena in Dallas. I still remember Marshall getting hammered on a layup resulting in a career ending knee injury and NO FOUL. Later I read Coach Brown had tears in his eyes when Marshall's knee went out.
I also got to take my father (a bigger ku fan than me) to San Antonio in 2008. Those championships help me make through our early exits in March. I think the loss to Arizona when they went all the way is the one that bothers me most.
Second is VCU. I took my son to watch us dance past Richmond and we looked great. I had a ton of people heading here to Houston until VCU ended our run. That weekend would have been such a great time and it was gone "just like that".

Interesting TV for this weekend. • Apr 03, 2014 06:49 PM

@drgnslayr
I once had connections in the Ozark Mountains. I still remember drinking some moonshine out of a mason jar. Clear as water and smooth as can be...gave me an instant buzz too.

MANNING: Does He Stay or Does He Go? • Apr 03, 2014 06:07 PM

@JRyman You remind me of me. My car radio stations are all over the place just like my music collection. makes me look like I have split personalities.

MANNING: Does He Stay or Does He Go? • Apr 03, 2014 06:05 PM

I love that clash song and video-thanks for the info it was made in Austin. As for my favorite concert I have to go with my first -sentimental for me- A frat was trying to get me to join and invited me and my gal to Lawrence to see The Beach Boys in Allen Field House.
As for Clapton- and Cream- man that takes me back.

Jayhawks to Badgers... • Apr 03, 2014 03:19 PM

I'll be rooting (pun intended) for the Badgers big time.
BEAT KENTUCKY!!!

MANNING: Does He Stay or Does He Go? • Apr 03, 2014 03:16 PM

Happy for Danny as either way he is in a better position today. IMHO he is the obvious choice to follow Self. That being said I hope Self stays at KU for a long time.

Am I allowed to join if I only meet one of your qualifications?

@drgnslayr
Good for you Slayer. I've seen the elderly care issue in my own family. The sibling with the greatest resources did squat while the one with the least did the most. Raised by the same parents you'd think it would be,different.

It's already been said, but this continues to be one of the best threads I've read. I never liked OAD, but it is what it is, and I'm happy we had Andrew this year. I agree Kentucky is hurting the game, and I sure hope they go down first in the FF.

As for the Northwestern union-nearly started a new thread on that-I could write all day. It pisses me off- but on the other hand people are making a ton of money on kids. In the end, I hope some kind of compromise be worked out-maybe some extra,stipend for. Expenses-or escrow accounts like Dwight Stones (high jumper) had. He was competing against professional athletes in a multi-event TV show-won $30,000 and had to put it away to keep his armature status.

@justanotherfan I really enjoyed every comment on this threads. If I may, I'd like to add something my father told me. "Son, I want you to be able to walk with kings and paupers and be comfortable in the company of both.

Wigs rates a ten. We discuss • Mar 31, 2014 05:12 PM

@wissoxfan83 If he rates his time at KU a 10 that's fantastic.
It means he had a great experience on and off the court. I think he handled all the hype so well and as stated above - he was about the team. And based on his comments, if I were an up and coming recruit, I'd be giving Kansas a good long look.

News about Embiid • Mar 28, 2014 04:43 PM

@globaljaybird
Global you are dead on about being apprehensive about youngsters and the future. My guess is many of us here had parents that experienced some part of the GreatDepression and WW2. Yet they made the most of it and in comparison my youth was a gravy train and my future was mine to go get. While my teenage kids have had a ton of great experiences and made the most of them, the US isn't what it was -our debt problems among others and I worry about their future-perhaps several generations are at risk.

And of course these KU athletes are under a media microscope to boot. I feel for them-that they don't get to be kids at all

Joel's Gone • Mar 28, 2014 12:25 PM

@nuleafjhawk
Well Dayton sure did "bring it" again last night. Maybe I should have qualified my statement like this. If A>B and B>C, then A>C, However in sports, that does not apply
-it depends on who shows up any given day.

Joel's Gone • Mar 28, 2014 01:20 AM

@nuleafjhawk the transitive law does not apply to sports.
My math teacher-hall of fame coach taught us that in the 70's. Which is also why you can't guarantee beating the same team twice in a season. Shooting % from the trey or otherwise mean more. Just because Stanford beat us doesn't mean a team that beats them on a different night could beat KU most nights.

Who? • Mar 26, 2014 05:51 PM

Nobody's perfect: coaches, players, fans. That said there isn't a coach alive today I would pick over Self.

I am happy this team leaves with a conference championship ring. I have one my self (different sport) but it is very very special-championships in any sport at any level are, and when ever I see a ring from anywhere I am very interested in the story behind it. Believe me these guys will treasure it and what the team did together the rest of their lives, even if they only play one year or ride the bench.italicised text

Godspeed Andrew & Tarik • Mar 23, 2014 08:24 PM

Boy, days like this are tough, but not so tough I can't look for something good to think about.

Thank you Andrew for coming to play at KU. Thank you for handling all the distractions you had to deal with with such poise and grace. Thanks for the great memories this season.

Tarik,
Thank you for choosing KU, and playing whatever roll you were handed. Thanks for your leadership with so much youth on this team.

You both will always be a special part of Jayhawk Nation.
Thanks for you roles in bringing us our 10th straight Big 12 title.

Seldon & Embiid-just hoping you'll consider another year.

RCJH.

Time to make the change • Mar 23, 2014 03:13 AM

I think you are dead on on. Early I liked Mason's bulldog play, but then he didn't dish or kick out, or sometimes pull up for a jumper.

BLOG for Tourney Games • Mar 23, 2014 02:52 AM

dragon,
Been reading your posts long enough to
know your knowledge of the game is at a different (higher) level than mine so I trust what you say. I like the idea a low seed took them down (and Duke, etc.) since we've been down that road before, I like that other Blue Chip programs sometime suffer the same fate so it isn't rubbed in our nose.

Anyway the older I get the more I own up to chinks in our armor. If all goes our way let them (Syracuse) say, we we could have beat KU, advanced, Yada, Yada. Yada.
I just hope we can survive and advance,

in 2008 many KSU fans tried to tell me they could and should have beat KU, advanced and would have won it all.
Woulda-coulda-shoulda

BLOG for Tourney Games • Mar 23, 2014 02:34 AM

Actually I wasn't 100% sorry to see them (Syracuse) dropped. I still feel the 2003 sting with Carmello. And Dayton has been a fun Cinderella to watch. Yes it would have been fun to take Syracuse down but we aren't sure we will have Embiid back if we beat Stanford tomorrow (fingers crossed). It seems Dayton doesn't have much inside so if we get past Stanford we just take it to the paint all day long, watch the perimeter and don't worry much about protecting the rim.
Congrats to the Dayton Team for a great run and love the senior depth.

Whew! • Mar 22, 2014 02:55 AM

Really happy to get the "W" the way top seeds have been falling. Luckily I missed all but 2 minutes of the first half since TO 's just kill me. But what do I know because HCBS stated earlier in the year he had bigger pet peaves than turnovers.

And it was nice to see KU winning running away with the lead building.

Sorry to see Okie State go early. At least Baylor Advanced and UT barely got by but a W is a W. Pulling for KSU right now and they aren't doing well late in the 1st.

On a personal note nice to see VCU go out early as I had an Armada heading for Houston to stay with us when the Final four was here. Now they have a taste of that medicine.

To quote Bill Murray, "really really"

@wrwlumpy really really

Why Wiggins Won Me Over • Mar 20, 2014 01:02 PM

@HighEliteMajor
I love all these things about Wiggins, and as others have mentioned ANY player OAD or otherwise could learn something about the points you made. More than anything I like the way he carries himself on and off the court. Great young man with some great parenting.

This Fuels My Hate Fire • Mar 19, 2014 08:53 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I just checked in a couple of times and when I saw all those empty seats had a good chuckle.
Of course, Mizzou can point to a great football season and the deserve that. I just think the bBall program is way down-not to mention 4 arrests in Columbia this week.

Rethinking SOS • Mar 16, 2014 08:51 PM

@nuleafjhawk
Sorry about the loss and difficult year. Prayers to you and your family.

As for SOS, I guess I Ike the middle of the road. A few BIG games, a few challenges, and a few cupcakes like helping out a former Jayhawk bringing his small program to experience AFH.

@JRyman
By the way, Hall of Fame Nebraska Track Coach Gary Pepin was coaching at KU when I was there. He still brings his squad to the KU Relays each year.

I'm and oil and gas guy here in Houston.
I addition to environmental concerns, the pipeline crosses our northern border and that gives Obama clout to prevent it.
The private sector has been going gangbusters, Obama hates big energy including coal so work offshore and on govt. land is at a trickle-yet he claims how great it is we are doing well in energy-he has zilch to do with the private sector.
Anyway, sorry to mention politics here but that's another part of the Keystone story.

Yeah, I've been gone for more than twenty years and people think they are clever when the let go with the toto jokes.
I can laugh along with any Jayhawk or Kansan, but the joke sounds pretty weak coming from others-and for the record the posters on this board walk on water-so it would take a lot more than that to ruffle this Jayhawks feathers.

I don't have it, but my father who recently passed recorded games and games. I'd say there is a 75% chance he has it on a disk. I will search for it the next time I am back in KAnsas.

I was at the KU Michigan game last year, and watched in agony as we let it slip through our hands. By the time I got home, the EJ -McGary hit was everywhere. Since I DVR'd the game, I had a hint something preceded it, and boy it is there on tape. I am not defending EJ's low blow, but 12 months ago I wasn't posting.
Here is what happened first. About a minute before, EJ brought the ball down the court, passed the ball and continued towards the lane. McGary was just coming up to set a pick at the foul line, and EJ was going to get by no problem. On the last step in front of the pick, EJ's defender shoves him hard so EJ runs straight into the pick- a blind side and snaps his head back hard. Flat out a cheap dirty play EARLY in the game.
EJ takes a shot back and gets caught. Again, not defending EJ, but it was MICHIGAN who pulled a dirty play first. I'm sure most of us have deleted that game, but it's there if you still have a copy.

I'd buy that book too.
