From my point of view, the NBA is a cartel. They make up their own rules. That can be good and bad at the same time. I heard Silver state that 75% of the owners can vote anyone out. Silver is asking for that, and he expects the owners to back him.

Silver hit him with everything he could.

I figured Colorado was scheduled because Self was doing Tad Boyle a favor, and KU alums in Denver had a history of big turnouts.
Of course the last time we visited, Tad made a big deal out of selling tickets to limit pro-ku fans. It worked.

I wonder if Self will schedule more games with them.

I do expect SMU and Wake Forest to be scheduled in the near future.

@justanotherfan
You are correct, they all got burned. Checking student bodies they are all small schools (under 10k students) save U of H. I don't know what the student body was way back when, but it is primarily a commuter school here in Houston and has grown a lot thanks to the oil boom. Unfortunately small school alums don't travel well and therefore don't fill there portion of large visitors stadiums. Well, that's what I hear folks like A&M grads gripe about. It probably has more to do with historical performance and perception.

Mixed emotions on Anderson as MU Coach • Apr 29, 2014 04:23 PM

I look at it this way. We didn't leave the big 8 for the big 12. The big 8 remained intact and expended to add some Texas teams. So all big 8 rivalries continued, plus we added a few with texas teams. THEN, Mu actively sought a way out begging the big 10 to take them. Eventually they left for greener pastures as did others. I feel some of us nearly got left in the cold. Our football has been dismal so we don't look so attractive if the conference were to go poof.
Luckily the big 12 remains a power conference so it looks like the super conferences will be calling the shots the next time we play musical chairs.

And HEM you are right, it is a double edged sword. We are hurting ourselves, but I see it this way. People will ALWAYS watch KU play. Who watches MU out side alums and teams/fans that play them that day. I just feel they have a lot more to gain than KU does if we resume play. And yes, I am still pissy about all the teams that left.

And part of that is being surrounded by A&M fans here- they are REALLY obnoxious. The SEC is on such a roll that's not going to change anytime soon.

Thanks 22,

We have Nothing to gain playing these teams.

KU fills AFH against anyone and commands the lion share of tickets (if not all) if we play in KC. So we don't need to do anyone any favors. Especially Those who left our conference.

I respect Kim Anderson and wish him well. To my knowledge he is a quality man/coach and has a great record.

On the other hand, I don't want to see Mizzou or any other SEC school climb out of the bBall hole most of them occupy.

I still think KU doesn't need them as in playing them.

What say you?

@Virgil_Caine
Gotta hand it to you Virg, you 've got the details down on that play.

Actually we doubled Curry and forced him to pass it to another player who missed the shot. Self was squating on the floor, and when the shot missed at the buzzer, nearly dropped his Knees to the floor and he leaned over and slammed his hand on the floor in relief.

@globaljaybird
So true,
My last KU event with my dad was Late Night this fall. At least we got that one in.

Wish this guy wouldn't have played so well against us in Dallas. For those of you who remember EJ hitting him low-a few plays before the player defending EJ shoved him just as he was passing McGary to blind side him with a violent pick-the whiplash was brutal.

Man, if you were listening in 52 you must have a gazillion ku stories through the years.

I just looked it up. That year my son was still in diapers and my daughter was born in February. We didn't have cable and I was too exhausted to go to a bar and watch. Sounds like I missed out on the pain Rhode Island handed out that year.

My wife went to KSU. We tried watching KU-KSU in the same room. Not good. We tried different TV's upstairs and downstairs which was better. Now we just DVR the games, check the results after and one of us is happy to see the replay and the other doesn't have to watch a loss.

Those ladies sure meant a lot to me. I was able to attend Late night at the PHOG this year and all the athletic teams got to walk the floor. The place went nuts when the girls track team came out. Better yet the crowd knew which girls scored the points to win it-and then they presented their championship rings including the seniors who had already graduated.

I was back for a ku relays reunion last year. Most of us weren't happy they didn't put it behind and south of AFH on campus where it belonged. But that ship sailed and I keep reading great things about the new facility.

Although I really hated those early outs like bucknell, the ones that sting me the most is when I felt we had our best teams. Zona and VCU.

Former KU players • Apr 23, 2014 04:34 PM

Funny, I didn't like Noah at Florida either-since I rarely watch NBA I don't give him much thought. But I do follow our ku players when I spot something on Espn website.

My parents grew up on the Missouri side with dad being a MU fan. We moved all over the USA until we settled in Overland Park when I started JR high. I had a little success in track and my father took me to watch the KU relays when I was 15. I dreamed about competing there and was fortunate to have a hall of fame coach in HS. That lead to a track scholarship, and that meant dad switched to a ku fan for life. He was a bigger fan than me, and kept me updated since I moved frequently including St. Louis, LA, Atlanta, Houston where it was very difficult to get KU info until the internet and our move to Houston just after the big12 made kansas somewhat relevant here in Texas. And FYI, there are thousands of KU alums here and LA as well.

On a side note of AFH history-back in the day there was a dirt track in AFH and we had practice and meets there during the indoor season. We all thought it was pretty special to compete in that building.

Ku buckets is a godsend as I've learned a lot and enjoyed the posters here a great deal.

When he beat USC for the National Championship- that bought him (Mack) a lot of extended seasons.

Plus, I am still extremely happy he "took the USC banners down" in Southern California. Those jerks flew them 24/7 year round.

Here in Texas you see UT or A&M flags on game day (and our KU and K-state flags as well (varies by season). Some of these Katrina transplanted LSU d*cks fly them all season long. It doesn't sit well as everyone else follows the game day tradition but a ton of LSU fans leave them up all the time.

Another thing that pisses me off. There are huge billboards in Austin (home of UT) that say, "This is SEC country". You don't see big 12 billboards in College Station. We have more class than that.

My father didn't like showboats. The first time I remember him bringing this up was watching "Broadway Joe" playing in white football shoes when everyone else had black shoes.

I find myself between both camps these days. It is fun to see some celebrations, like a great ncaa bBall play.

and at the other extreme I hate to see a NFL defensive lineman go nuts after a sack-and sometimes it is the only sack he gets in the entire game.

When is the last time we saw a NFL offensive lineman beating his chest after he made a great block -even if he put the guy on his backside.

My daughter plays club bBall here in Houston. For the most part the kids playing in these tourneys -boys and girls play hard on both ends of the court-and we are in high school level now. But the parents can be the worst-so between that and TV games from NCAA and NBA no wonder they start going showboat all offense.

JB,
If you want new blood, how about this idea. I would guess most of us know a next generation Jayhawk. Case in point, my best friend's daughter graduated from ku around 2009. Let's say we each reach out to one of these youngsters when the season starts up, and introduce them to the site. Just ask them to follow for a week. I bet some would stay with it.
I would think that would help bring in some new blood of the right kind.

Good write up and forecast for the Big 12 • Apr 17, 2014 07:05 PM

@wissoxfan83
You are right, there is a conflict in pulling for the league, but i do it just after pulling for KU.
Obviously when big12 does well in post season play it reflects well, and gives someone like SEC fans less ammunition to attack our league's strength. So I pull for the league, up to a point. I pick and choose them as I want some success, but not too much success.

In no way am I looking down on Div 1 bBall. It is brutal-just brutal physical work, and I've stated before the big men are now incredible athletes-much more so than in the 70's.

That said, Nice of you to back off of the "little high jump injury".
KU's all time high jump record holder ( 7' 4" ), now ranked 2nd on the all time KU list had no less than three knee injuries and consequent surgeries. Another all-American jumper on the same team had a major blowout and surgery as well. Training is constant high impact work and heavy heavy squats. I'm talking sets of squats building up to 6x 400 pound 1/2 squats down to a bench. I've always wondered how many foot pounds of torque a world class jumper exerts on a jump.

Post Banquet Conversation • Apr 16, 2014 08:11 PM

@JRyman
I'm a wounded warrior myself. I was still doing high impact stuff to my mid thirties as a single guy. Yes, I am hobbled now but to me it was worth it. I was very competitive and enjoyed getting after it just for fun. And besides I had a great quality of life.
All those years I didn't always know pain from injury. And it went from one extreme to the other.
Now sports medicine is so advanced.

Caliparis book and change of ncaa rules • Apr 10, 2014 08:25 PM

Yes I know it's a very slippery slope. I would like to see some very small adjustments. When I was at KU the full rides got room, board, tuition books, and $35 a month for laundry.

I still like that with an adjustment for 2014 laundry prices.

I just put this in IF some thing like this happened and no way to stop it I would tweek Cal's idea.

What do we think of our OADs? • Apr 10, 2014 02:56 AM

@MoonwalkMafia
Thanks,
Luckily for all involved Ben was in our program two years, giving him extra time to mature and develop even though he only played here one year. I think it was a win-win-win all the way round. It's a great story and I hope it keeps playing out that way.

And as I said, I don't like the OAD program, but it is what it is and we've had some wonderful young men come through KU. I hope it goes to 2 or 3 and done, or have the NBA put money in escrow-something like that- follow the other pro sports-who knows.

Is Roy On the Hot Seat? • Apr 10, 2014 02:07 AM

I was a big fan of Roy's and we should have won a NCAA title when he was here. I also think HCBS should have won two at KU by now.

I'm not going to put a title 100% on a coach or a player.
Do you see how many games are coming down to one or two possessions these days. Some games come down to the bounce off a rim. There is a lot of parity these days.

I love our program, but we are under performing in NCAA titles since 1988. That doesn't mean I want another coach. I don't.

As for Roy, I think he gets to stay and UNC for as long as he wants to. Just my humble opinion.

What do we think of our OADs? • Apr 09, 2014 09:18 PM

IMHO they didn't seem to help much in the past. I am not a OAD fan, but we've been lucky to have great individuals when they do come to KU. I am happy they all came.

Then Last year Ben showed me quite a bit.

This year, they were a huge part of our success, but also being frosh didn't show up every game.

But, they all were class acts and conducted themselves well. I was very happy to have them-sorry to see them go but only have the best wishes for them.

And gents, please come back and visit when you can.

Wow, those are great times, let alone for a junior. No surprise he is hearing from so many schools. Obviously he has worked very very hard to get where he is. Success begets success, and his work ethic insures a great future even after he hangs his spikes up. Must be a treat to watch him compete.

We live in Texas so my trips are limited but last year we had a great reunion at the ku relays. With 30 million people in Texas my son is doubtful to compete at Texas Relays (high school) next year but I think he would have a good chance to qualify, maybe even place at the KU relays.

UCONN WINS • Apr 09, 2014 04:07 AM

Happy to hear you are a part of it. Living in Texas limits my visits.

I don't know the layout of the new track facility, but At Memorial Stadium he would sit in one of the front rows Kati cornered from the finish line where the north long jump pit and high jump are were so he could coach both jumps.

. Normally the Nebraska squad. Was 20 rows up and he was sitting with old ku track athletes(now sixty-ish). Peppin has a short stocky build and has a full head of white hair.

UCONN WINS • Apr 09, 2014 03:14 AM

@JRyman
Well here is a KU -Huskers coaching tree story for you in a minor sport. HOF Nebraska track coach Gary Peppin has a phenomenal record, but he was at KU coaching jumps when I was there in the 70's with world class athletes. He still takes Nebraska to the KU relays and I have a photo of him with about 10 old KU track guys from last year.
