@brooksmd That could explain it. What explains us winning conference the past 4 years, with 1 tournament conference title in the last 4?

@JayHawkFanToo We will have several occasions this year where we should be playing 3 games in a row. Maui and the Big 12 tourney ( God willing) come to mind. Wayne shot 6 for 28 in the Gold medal game. Perry went 6 for 21. Nic went 2 for 10. My passing thought was maybe our defense (man to man) is so intense, it takes more out of us than say a Baylor, who plays zone, which in turn, could affect our offense - our shots. Which might explain why, even though we have been the best team in conference for 12 years, we haven't displayed the same dominance in the conference tournament.

Now, the argument could be made that we simply have already won the conference, and really aren't that motivated to win the tournament title. I certainly don't have the answers - i simply am curious if 3 games in a row of tough man to man defense wears down our shooters on the offensive end. Now, the flip side is Frank didn't seem to be affected as much, going 6 for 13 in the final game, so nothing I am speculating can be etched in stone. I've wondered why we have struggled against Baylor in the conference tourney at times - does their passive zone keep them fresher in that 2nd/ 3rd game in a row? Inquiring minds want to know.

@jaybate-1.0 We spend lots of time discussing huge conglomerates with massive power manipulating and corrupting college basketball. In some ways, it is a microcosm of the country and the world we live in. Nice catch on the KUSAdasi name.

@JayHawkFanToo Man to man is better defense, period. It just takes alot out of the team when you are playing 3 games in a row, like the WUG, and the Big 12 tourney.

@TheDrunkenJhawk Bottom line these teams are fairly evenly matched and arguing for either side cannot be considered rediculous.

Jed Clampett: " I'm going to have to have a long talk with that boy".

( no malice intended ).

@drgnslayr This will be an extra special season - the type season we have all waited for.

@bskeet One of the other factors I have been rolling around the gourd is our insistence on playing 100% man to man defense at all times. It truly is the best defense, but it is a lot more work than the zone. Which is why we shot so poorly in the Gold Medal game, imo. We were gassed. In back to back to back games, fatigue sets in, imo. I think that is one of the factors why we don't win the Big 12 conference tourney every year, like we do the conference.

@bskeet Anytime we start to blow a team out, we let them back in the game. How many 10+ point leads have we blown in the past two years? Mental toughness.

Frank Mason going Pro • Jul 24, 2015 11:32 AM

@BeddieKU23 "I’m not saying Fox is an upgrade because we don’t know how Graham will do if in fact he plays alongside Mason the whole season."

Oh, but I think we do know how Graham will do. Just look at his last game he played.

@Crimsonorblue22 TT made that play a zillion times. Except against Kensucky.

Early Predictions for KU NonConf 2015-16 • Jul 23, 2015 01:29 AM

I am predicting we beat the Squid and the Mildcats 150-95.

Frank Mason going Pro • Jul 23, 2015 12:24 AM

@SoftballDad2011 That's what I thought as well. Even if Frank would go pro, I'm not convinced Fox would be anointed with the starter's gig from the git-go. Frank will play two more seasons here, imo.

How Many Excuses For Wayne? • Jul 20, 2015 10:24 PM

@Kcmatt7 I know you love Svi, and are really hoping to see a huge break out from him.

@Statmachine I don't think its relevant. If he didn't have a 3, why would he ask for two guards from SMU and FGCU if he wasn't already planning to move Wayne...why not just ask for a 3???? His move to the 3 isn't temporary - on that, we'll just have to disagree.

@Statmachine You're forgetting how poorly Wayne takes care of the ball, which is why they moved Wayne to the 3 in the first place. We all watched the WUGS. We all saw what happened to Wayne's game once they moved him to the 3. Wayne isn't very good handling the ball, which is why Devonte will play the 2.

@Statmachine Here's the pull quote from that article:

So it’s time to talk about sophomore Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk. If he can play high-speed basketball well enough to be the guy who can spell both Frank Mason and Devonté Graham, that will enable Wayne Selden to stay at one position.

Unless Devonte is still hurt, Svi isn't going to start ahead of him.

@Kcmatt7 Devonte is quicker, is a better ball handler, better passer, better shooter, better defensively, has quicker hands, and plays with much more confidence than Svi. Now, Svi is taller than Devonte, bigger, and probably much better on the boards, so he does have that going for him. Your assertion that Devonte hasn't developed this summer due to his injury, imo, isn't giving Devonte credit for the development he showed in the NCAA tourney. 17 points .... 3 treys ... 3 assts .... 5 steals...1 t.o. in 29 minutes against the Shlockers. 5 steals against that back court is walking in some pretty tall cotton, imo. We don't have a skill set on our roster that could match what Devonte brings to the table ( other than Frank).

What I loved about the 2008 team was the number of run outs our defense created. Our perimeter defense constantly disrupted other team's offensive flow, jumping in the passing lanes, deflecting balls away, etc. Devonte's speed and quick hands gives us a much greater chance to add that element back into our defense/offense.

What I saw with Svi last year was a kid who was trying too hard, and was playing very tight. The stage looked too big for him, where as Devonte nearly instantly fit right in. I hope that Svi puts it all together this year, and gets the confidence part down, because he definitely has all the tools.

@Crimsonorblue22 look it up...lol.

Memphis Fallout • Jul 18, 2015 02:58 PM

@drgnslayr I was gobsmacked over the way they handled their latest transfer. Pastner is out as coach - might not be until the season ends this year, but he is bye-bye.

@Crimsonorblue22 there...

@Statmachine I don't think Devonte is injury prone. He hurt his toe when that big fat Georgetown center stepped on him, and had a partially torn thigh(quad) tendon this summer. I think Devonte will be a star this year - he will be right there with Wayne, Bulldog, and Perry. I think he will be our best clutch shooter from the perimeter, our best ball handler and assist guy, and our leader in steals on the team.

Cheick Diallo • Jul 18, 2015 11:03 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Upvote +1000. I'm watching him in these all-star games show all kinds of abilities to dribble to the hoop, make short jumpers, etc..and I keep scratching my head hearing he can't score.

Cheick Diallo • Jul 17, 2015 11:17 PM

@Statmachine I think our fans are going to be shocked how good Diallo is going to be. This team has national championship potential.

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? • Jul 17, 2015 05:25 PM

@hawkmoon2020 My question has always been...who is watching Snopes? Are they the next "Politifact" ( a democrat front group pretending to be an "unbiased" truth detector ). No answer is required - just curious..... ;).

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? • Jul 16, 2015 11:10 PM

Anyone see what's happening in Greece? Hear about the Chinese stock market taking a bath? Now...that has my full attention. Other than KU basketball, that is. They're trying to distract us, and get us to fight with each other over ridiculous issues ....while our economic systems are the verge of complete collapse. Our national debt is so astronomically high, the fed office that releases that info hasn't changed the debt clock in 4 MONTHS... and everyone is discussing Brucie Jenner and "racism. " Isn't the first method of overthrowing a country to destroy its economic system? Gee, wonder what kind of despot will grab power in Greece when their financial systems are in ruins. I'm afraid we're fixing to see things and times we have never seen in our lifetime.

Ok, that was depressing. You guys started it. Lets talk who you think will start: I'm thinking Bulldog, Devonte, Wayne, Perry, Diallo ( by conference ).

CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC? • Jul 16, 2015 09:51 PM

"CAN DEVONTE REPLACE NIC?"

YES, HE CAN. AND WILL. AND HE WILL BE GREAT.

Sorry for shouting. I get excited about Devonte this year.

Big 12 bb • Jul 16, 2015 12:24 AM

Since this thread has somewhat of a 'free roll" feel, I just had to share this. There is an EPIC smackdown of Josh Pastner and the Tigger Administration from an attorney representing the kid that tried to transfer, and was being denied/restricted by Memphis. OMG. I fell out of my chair. No wonder Tarik couldn't wait to get out of there...:

Let's hang a banner on KU BUCKETS >>>>> photoshop, anyone?

All good things must come to an end. • Jul 14, 2015 11:40 AM

@Kcmatt7 In my opinion, there is no way Svi starts ahead of Devonte at any point in the season, and there's no way Hunter starts ahead of Diallo after the first 10 games.

The beginning of the End? • Jul 14, 2015 01:12 AM

@nuleafjhawk I watched the replay. Looks like Frank bailed us out, and Nic won it for us. Give us that desire and hustle every game this upcoming year, and we might bring home another National Championship. I was wondering if there are any pictures of the "flight attendants" that awarded the gold medal to each of our guys. What do they have...wings?

KU REDEMPTION TOUR • Jul 12, 2015 04:00 PM

What could be better tonic than washing the Shlocker loss away with a gold medal in the WUG ? Could anyone have written a more perfect script for Wayne Selden to go from this ...

http://www2.kusports.com/weblogs/tale-tait/2015/apr/10/wayne-selden-announcement-seems-unnecess/ ↗link text ↗

TO THIS ..

“He’s been superior to everybody,” Kansas coach Bill Self said of Selden. “He played to his athletic ability. Shot selection was terrific. And, of course, he only played 38 or 39 minutes. He and Frank, we couldn’t take them out with Nic getting in foul trouble. Yeah, he played great.”

Mason added: “I have a lot of confidence in Wayne. He’s showed it all tournament. He’s been the best player here so far. Hopefully he can keep that going tomorrow and get the gold.

Hunter Michelson a.k.a. THE RED FURY. Banished into a "cryogenic state" ( tip of the cap to the great one for that one), he emerges from the phone booth in his Superman costume, ready to kick Euro butt. Playing like a three legged man in an ass kicking contest, his constant hustle has been pretty darn amazing. I don't know if it's because of intl rules, and he goes back into the deep freeze or not, I just know he's playing pretty damn good right now.

Landen - Talking about re-writing an obituary - rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated. His effort the last two games was a Jayhawk effort...maybe seeing Hunter get some ink woke him out his "cryogenic slumber" ( tip of the cap to the great one for that).

Jamari - Unredeemed so far. Maybe Jamari is hurt. Maybe Jamari is in the toughening box. Maybe Coach broke up with him as his pet ( I apologize in advance for that cynical remark). Maybe Coach is preparing Jamari for the regular season. Would love to see a Jamari redemption in the title game. He won't get it in 6 minutes playing time- if he gets 6 minutes tomorrow, it would seem that somebody is trying to prepare a certain somebody that he won't be hitting the court much this year ( unless Traylor is hurt).

BTW, I don't believe for a second that Perry is operating at 100%- he looks sore...it looks like to me he is grimacing. He doesn't look as fast as last year. Anyone else care to wildly speculate?
