Would have to be okay playing off of the ball. Would move Grimes to Wing. Probably. I definitely don't hate having two PGs playing together. Especially ones as talented as Dotson and Williams would be.
@BeddieKU23 I hope that can get casted to a TV
The last few years, the brackets were leaking on twitter before the show. So it was a waste of time anyways.
@dylans MLB solves that problem by putting a stipulation in the contracts of most players that they will pay for college if they don't make it to the pros.
Simplest solution is for the NCAA to adopt NBA playing rules, give coaches more practice time, and let schools count participating in a sport as a 3 or 6 hour credit class. That way it doesn't mess with student loans or insurance. Students who are actually playing a sport as a way to pay for school can still do that. Players who are just making a pit stop don't even need to really go to class and can focus more on basketball. I mean the whole point of college is to prep you for your career. No reason that people who will be future professional basketball players shouldn't be getting the best possible preparation they can for that career path.
@BShark I think he looks more put together size-wise than LeGerald, but equally as athletic. At least when you compare HS mixtapes.
If he can shoot at a 35-40% clip from trey, especially from the corner, he will flourish as a Wing player here. KU is going to have one chippy, gritty, tough bunch over the next 4 or 5 seasons. I can't wait.
@FarmerJayhawk I'll believe it when I see it. As long as Bill treats the Lawson's right, I don't see why they would try another experiment. Or why they would split the brother's up. I expect KJ to be at KU while Chandler is.
Now, that #1 prospect, that might be legit. But I expect Cal to close that deal. Even if he needs to call in WWW to do it.
@BShark That vert already has me fan-girling so hard.
@BeddieKU23 Who besides Duke and Purdue are good teams with size? Like to the point it is an advantage. This seems like a really small-ball year. But I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple of teams.
Also, potential nightmare matchup for Duke in round 1. I know TAMU has been hit or miss, and mostly miss. But I think they could actually crush Duke's zone with rebounding and would be able to keep them off the boards on both ends.
@BShark Oh I know. I was just thinking about it in a "what if scenario".
I Just feel bad for whatever 5 or 4 does end up playing them.
My sleeper FF team is definitely Florida if they stay hot out of the SEC tourney. Seem to be back to their beginning of the season form once White basically forced Allen to start shooting the ball more.
@BeddieKU23 I absolutely would not want to play SDSU again. Daum is a legit nightmare matchup. PTSD kicking in already. Nightmares of UNI already coming back just thinking about it. Must. Stop.
Bracketville (best 5 year average) has them as a 12 seed. So naturally they will be a sexy pick to win.
LIU Brooklyn looked like a team you don't want to play, for what it's worth. They are better than their record. They have size and can rebound. If they come out hot, like they did last night, they are a good team. I'm pretty sure all 5 starters hit a 3 for them last night. That was the type of night they were having. Wagner went 6-32 from 3 or something close to that.
It was an entertaining game though that really came down to the last minute.
@BeddieKU23 I felt like SDSU would be a bad matchup for a poor offensive team. KU absolutely beat their pants off just because we could shoot AND were more athletic than them. I think they would be scary to play if you struggled to score because they ARE going to score some points.
But I guess that's what makes it so hard to predict the tourney :joy:
Literally couldn't have more opposite opinions lol.
@BeddieKU23 beginning of the year they were definitely legit. And I know if DG went out for 5-6 games and let’s say Svi was out for 70% of the season but is back in time for the tourney, we as KU fans would want the committee to consider us a tournament team.
I’m not sure Colson is actually healthy or not. And I’m not sure hat ND should make the tourney. I’m just saying that if some of the small conferences that only produce 16 seeded teams were removed, we could open up a few more spots for teams like ND.
@mayjay doesn’t necessarily solve the paying recruits problem though. I like NCAA’s solution to let players fetch endorsements.
There will always be KU basketball to watch. Even if it ends up being 5 white guys running around playing 5 other white guys, we will still hear the Rock Chalk Chant damn near every Saturday from November through April.
The real question is how does the NBA think that they can afford this? And, if they can, what would they gain by doing so? I think they should let guys go right out of HS. Absolutely. But other than that, why shell out a crap ton of money just to train players slightly differently than they are getting trained now? Just makes no sense to me.
First, Colleges already have infrastructure all over the country. World-Class infrastructure. They have a fan-base that puts players on national stages and attracts more casual fans to the NBA than a developmental league would. How is the NBA going to get players that are literally located in every state in the country into some sort of developmental process? It just seems so messy to me.
I understand that baseball does it. But it works for baseball because nobody watches College Baseball. I couldn't name a single College Baseball player right now. So, the MLB gains nothing from the College Game. They also get to pay the majority of their players in their developmental system next to no money. Making it much more affordable. Especially because the MLB has almost no competition internationally for players. Salary-wise, it isn't even close.
I am also concerned with what the rules would be. Do players sign with teams in HS? Is there a draft? How would all of this work, for a pre-18 year old? There would just be far, far too much to do that I can't see how this makes sense.
As long as the best players in the World continue to play in the U.S. I see no reason the NBA would want to embark on an endeavor that seems to me, quite fruitless.
@justanotherfan Agreed, one or two grad transfers would be fine. But, what I meant was for them to look for freshmen who are committed right now, then their coach gets fired, and then could come in and contribute next season.
UConn has a couple of 4 stars that I would already start calling if I was Boyton. Scenarios like that are more what I'm referring to than taking transfers who need to sit a year.
Chris Mullen has to be on the hot seat. He has at least one player they should be interested in.
Iowa has a top 50 kid that is a lifelong Iowa fan, but who knows what happens if McCaffrey is fired.
Chris Collinsworth at Northwestern is questionable. In his first season with 100% his own players, Northwestern sucked. They have a top 100 recruit that I'd think OSU could look at.
Minnesota may can little Pitino. Oturu may become available if that happened. But he is a Minnesota kid so it depends on who they hire.
Georgia Tech may just get rid of Pastner. He isn't good enough to be worth any sort of headache. He has a top 50 recruit.
Once the coaching carousel gets really going, a 2nd year guy like Boyton needs to capitalize. It is about the only way to make up ground recruiting when you are basically a no name to this point.
@BeddieKU23 I'm torn on the issue. For competitive reasons, I agree. A team like Notre Dame could legit make the FF, but may not get in because of injury. If you eliminated some of the terrible conferences, you wouldn't hesitate to put them in.
On the other hand, it is what makes March special. Watching programs make the tournament for the first time ever, watching Norfolk State beat your rival, etc. These are the moments that burn into your brain for forever.
My only thought is that they need to let the leagues decide on whether they want the automatic bid to go to the Reg. season champion or the tournament champion. I look at the USD and SDSU game tonight as a great example. SDSU has earned their trip. They deserve to be in (even as an at-large imo, but that is moot) because they won that league. They put in the work, and somehow it all comes down to one single game. I just don't like it.
I couldn't be more on the fence on this topic. At this point, I say leave it alone because this is the best event in sports. Don't mess that up.
@justanotherfan Maybe one or two of those guys.
But, what he REALLY needs to do is feast on players looking to go someplace else after the coach they committed to gets fired. There will be plenty of that going on in a few weeks. Combined with job hopping coaches, there should be 10-15 decent players out there looking for a new home and playing time.
@wissox Those 7,8,9 and 10s from non P5 schools are so much scarier than the p5 schools on those lines.
@BeddieKU23 I was going to say, his best option is to continue to be competitive with transfers while bringing in a few long-term frosh. Once he has established himself, I think he will be able to recruit just fine.
@HighEliteMajor Well they actually came out and defined a lot of things this year with the quadrants. And after the first bracket release, it looked as if they were actually following the said criteria.
They also make the "team sheets" readily available with the info on them which is super convenient when looking at brackets.
@dylans Lol exactly.
I'm hoping for the path of least resistance. Literally! At this point, I think our best chance to advance far is to play less athletic teams, and poor defensive teams.
@dylans Of the ones Lunardi has on the 4/5 line, I would like to avoid Florida, Ohio State and Wichita State at all costs. So I am ok with the current bracket. I think Doke could dominate the Gonzaga game, and I think he is about one of the only players that could hang with Ayton. Arizona is also a terrible Defensive team. The combo of Doke being able to guard Ayton combining with how poorly UA plays defensively is the type of matchup I like for us.
I would put Arizona on upset alert opening weekend tbh. Can't play D. They get matched up with a slow-paced, defensive oriented team, and they will find themselves in a dog-fight. SDSU would give UA a run for their money.
I pary we play OK State. Not for any revenge reason. We can actually benefit from playing them. Other teams are going to come at us with their same gameplan defensively. We have to learn how to beat it before next week. That is the only thing that has stumped Self so far this year. Basically they said we can't run the weave against them and our guys look like idiots because of it. Instead of running the weave against the overaggressive ball pressure, run pick and roll with Doke and drive to the basket. Set up backdoor passes. Do other things.
I can tell you that our first two games we will see teams trying to keep us out of the weave if OK State beats us with it again. Can't be a one trick pony.
@BeddieKU23 Tough to say. I think, if any of them open up in the next 5 seasons, he would be on the shortlist for KU, UNC, UK or Duke. I don't see him taking any other job EXCEPT maybe the UT job. He is a UT alum and I think that job would be really enticing for him.
He did spend 10 years at TTU as an assistant though, so I think there is loyalty. But sometimes opportunities come that you just can't turn down.
@HighEliteMajor 8 of the 13 non-con games were quadrant 1 or quadrant 2 games. SDSU was a great schedule. A Quadrant 2 home game.
Self and his staff have mastered the art of building a schedule that sets us up for situations like this. A 7 loss team still apparently in the drivers seat for the 4th #1 seed or the 1st #2 seed is a little bit crazy.
@wissox Another stat that is on the team sheets is average RPI win and average RPI loss. What we have been talking about is exactly Michigan State.
- Average RPI Win Rank: 151
- Average RPI Loss Rank: 13
Exactly what we were talking about. You mentioned they played really good teams early in the season. And they lost those games. Ala, the RPI rank when they lost. But then, you see the flip side. Their wins at 151. What a weird season and schedule from Izzo.
I do think the Big 10 was disrespected this season and that hurts them a lot. We will see though. I wouldn't want to face any of the Big 10 teams that made it.
If anyone wants to look at the "team sheets" the committee uses, here is the link.

@wissox They are 3-4 in quadrant 1 games. Not good. Undefeated in all of their other quadrants, but the played nobody.
They played a total of 12 games in the first two quadrants. Including their conference tournament. That schedule is weak af. Even if they did play some top of the top teams. The rest of the schedule was sooooo bad. They played 9 quadrant 4 games. 9 dog crap teams.
For comparison:
KU played 24 games in quadrants 1 and 2. With a potential for 3 more in quadrants 1 and 2 with the conference tourney still yet to be played. And we have a record of 18-6 in those games. Only 4 quadrant 4 games played
Duke has played 19 games in quadrants 1 and 2 and are 13-6 in those games. Only 4 quadrant 4 games played.
Virginia played 16 games in the first two quadrants, going 14-2 in those games. They only played 5 quadrant 4 games.
Villanova played 18 quadrant 1 games and 4 quadrant 4 games.
Xavier played 18 quadrant 1 games and 4 quadrant 4 games.
UNC played 21 quadrant 1 games and 4 quadrant 4 games.
Purdue played 17 quadrant 1 games, and 9 quadrant 4 games.
Tennessee played 18 quadrant 1 games and 3 quadrant 4 games.
MSU played a very, very very bad schedule.
We need to start rooting for some crazy Conference tournament results though. Some of these 11 seeds need to get knocked out.
Below is a list of teams that could steal bids from these 11 seeds:
- A-10. Will get Rhode Island and St. Bon in for sure. But I think another team could actually win the tourney if they get hot.
- Big East - This one is a long shot. Would take a crazy run by St. John's or Georgetown most likely.
- Conference USA - If MTSU can get knocked off, that is an extra bid for the league.
- Mountain West - If anyone but Nevada wins, boom there is a bid.
- WCC could steal one if BYU or SFU can somehow pull off some magic.
Those are probably the biggest tournaments to pay attention to that could drastically change any brackets at this point. The link below is the best bracketologist over the past several years. I can tell you I much prefer the 3-6 matchups in his bracket to the 4-5s.

Can we fast forward to next Thursday already?
@KUSTEVE Lol stop. Nope. Positive vibes only bish. We are going to get the 2 seed and then be in a bracket where and 11 seed has upsets over the 3 and 6 seeds and then we end up playing a 15, 10 and 11 seed on our way to an Elite Eight matchup vs. Xavier in Omaha.
Really need a couple of teams to steal bids though. The 11 seeds at the moment are a little bit scary for being 11 seeds... Although I'd love another shot at ASU.
@BeddieKU23 Exactly. Bill needs to play this right if he can. Keep an eye on the other tournaments and then let's see what he can do to effect some change. Or at least try to get this team on the easiest road.
Looking at it right now as well, I like the 3-6 matchups much better than any of the 4-5 ones. Right now, I see underseeded 4s and 5s and overseeded 3s and 6s.
Bill needs to play this just right. Win the first game and lose the 2nd. Give us a 2 seed in the Midwest instead of a 1 seed in LA. jmo though.
Dooley has to be on a short-list for a decent program at this point. At 52, he could still coach somewhere another 10-12 years. I could see him as a coach in the AAC.
@JayHawkFanToo Well, true haha. I guess it starts with the owners really...
I mean they expect loyalty, yet don't show it themselves. Forces the players to act the same way. Or rather, their agents. But Boras is far and away the worst of the worst. They type of guy that would offer you a piece of gum and then a week later you'd get a bill in the mail for it, plus 20% interest lol.
@dylans great point. I’m sure they end up playing an under seeded big 10 team in the Midwest region again.
@BShark very similar margin for error as this team had. Justin Wesley was the 4th big. Just don’t see how that wasn’t his best job as an Xs and Os coach. Of course EJ bailing us out was lucky. But no more than Marion’s triple.
2008 team he basically had a team that shoved their fists down everyone’s throats. 4 NBA level post players. NBA wing. NBA SG and an NBA caliber PG that just got fat. Not including one of the best defensive players to play the game. Had Julian stayed, that team may very well have gone undefeated.
@BShark no argument. Still will piss me off to see them as a 5 or 6 seed. At best deserve an 8 or 9 seed.
It will take all 4 starting guards showing up every game the entire tournament in order to make it far.
Hopefully we can get blessed with the #2 seed in the Midwest and get as much of an advantage as is possible.
@BShark most teams with their resume would be bubble teams.
I definitely don’t see them making it out of the first weekend.
2012 I would think to be his best coaching job.
@Crimsonorblue22 I blame Boras for that. Pretty sure he didn’t want Hos communicating with anyone at all. Didn’t want emotions to get involved. Which is why Hos is playing in SD imo.
Boras is what is wrong with sports.
@mayjay this team is better than the “experts” are saying imo.
Makes it easy to root for the guy. Class act through and through.
@dylans thanks for the assist
@justanotherfan Xavier won the conference didn’t they?
