Expectations for the season • Nov 20, 2020 08:34 PM

My gut tells me this team is going to be an elite defensive team that has games where they struggle to score. We will have a nail biter or two against teams that are WAY below our level. And we will win games by 25 where the hoop is like throwing a rock into the ocean against a top 10 team.

The two big questions in my mind are how we will be able to function with Mitch as our backup 5 and will we be able to shoot the ball consistently enough that the four guard rotation works well.

My biggest concern is the post depth. Big Dave picks up two quick fouls and then we are playing Mitch and Gethro 25 minutes in a game. Tshiebwe would be dunking the ball every single possession.

As far as projecting this team, it really is tough. There isn't anyone on the roster that I have super high expectations for. At the same time, there really isn't anyone that I think shouldn't be getting minutes that will be. Will the depth give us enough of an advantage? Will TGF play his way into starting? Will Ochai have the All-American breakout? Can Garrett make a leap offensively? How good is Bryce going to be day 1?

Last year, we knew we'd be good. Doke and Dot coming back virtually assured they would be a Top 5 team. But even with Dave, Ochai and Garrett coming back I definitely don't have that same feeling.

If this team wants to be FF good, they will need Ochai or Thompson to be a walking 15 ppg imo. Otherwise I just don't know that we will be able to score consistently enough to make that type of a run.

Dole worked his ass off to get there.

Anyone who has ever been as heavy as him has no idea how hard you have to work to lose that kind of weight and keep it off.

Super proud of that dude.

There is no good solution.

Either you let thousands die and put more people out of work or you save thousands and hurt the quality of life of hundreds of thousands.

It is, however, disingenuous to say you only lose your taste and smell. But you knew that when you wrote this. Diminishing the disease to make it sound less than it is to justify your reasoning for choosing thousands dead instead of a short term economic hit. It is to make yourself feel better when you look in the mirror. But the "other side" is doing the same thing to justify putting people out of work. There is no clear and correct choice.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to close businesses just to close businesses. The choice is basically saying if you could only save your child or your wife which one would you choose?

Below is an excerpt from the show "Blacklist" which was written before Covid, but I think of it all the time now.

Red: You know, many ancient cultures shares a common figure, a god or demon who brought disease to humanity. The Finns called her Loviatar, the Yoruba people knew her as Shapona. The Greeks of course immortalized Pandora. Odd that they’re always women. Have you ever heard of Mary Mallon?
Liz: Should I have?
Red: She was a cook for the New York elite in the late 19th Century. When an alarming number of high society swells came down with typhoid fever, a research scientist traced the outbreak to a woman with the rare ability to carry the disease without suffering its effects or exhibiting any outward symptoms. Earning her the name–
Liz: Typhoid Mary.
Red: Correct. You’re looking for an asymptomatic carrier of Luschen’s Disease. To find your suspect, you need to know when and where was the outbreak that she survived. And, hurry. There’s a reason the plague-bringers were the most feared among the ancient deities.

This just reminds me that diseases have to be taken seriously as they have literally wiped out entire civilizations. While we know covid isn't going to do that, we do understand it will infect millions, put hospitals at capacity, and is lethal to a certain faction of society. Boris Johnson and Donald Trump literally had to go to the hospital because of this. What if Trump or Johnson had died? This virus was thiiiis close to causing a potential shift in world power. I'm sure DT and BJ went to the hospital just because they couldn't smell or taste.

On the bright side, we are probably 200 days away from a mass produced vaccine. And we will have the agility to reduce the impact of the next pandemic due to major advances in RNA vaccine technology which is going to be proven to be both extremely effective, but also more agile and easier to scale than previous vaccine technology. While the storage and logistics challenges it presents right now are certainly an issue, RNA technology is going to be an arms race here over the next five years and we will see drastic improvements.

For what its worth, this is also an opportunity to find new interests and hobbies, if we are encouraging people to do things. I went from not knowing hardly anything about tools to now having completely renovated a 1950s house.

@nwhawkfan There'd have to be multiple venues in use to accommodate every game. You could probably split Lucas Oil in half and play two games there. The NCAA would probably have to use the Pacers arena for games and they might have to use Hinkle as a 4th venue to accommodate 1st weekend games.

I could definitely see that happening.

I think they could probably fit 4 on Lucas Oil with room to spare.

Yikes.

The fact that Trump's support was so deeply underestimated speaks to the fact that this is the blueprint we can expect for the future. Douche it up, cheat, scratch, claw, lie, defame, encourage crazies, refuse to denounce reprehensible activity, weaponize everything and anything. Nothing is sacred. Nothing is out of bounds.

And this is ok, right? Republicans are good with this. I mean not publicly, when asked for polls. But when they're standing there looking at the ballot... well that's between them and their God, right?

Character is what you do when nobody is watching.

I think you have to wait for the mid-terms to see where the Republican party is going to go. I don't think continually nominating a douche is going to be a good long-term strategy though.

Whither JoJo ? • Oct 30, 2020 04:53 PM

@justanotherfan Have to see that KD/Kyrie Pick and Roll first though before they make that move...

Things Scott Drew has done:

  • Take Baylor to their first tournament in 20 years.
  • Take Baylor to eight tournament appearances, they had only been 4 times in their entire history
  • Took over a program at literally one of the worst times someone could - almost as bad as Bill O'Brien at PSU
  • Has had them ranked in 12 of the last 13 seasons. At a medium sized private Baptist college in Wacco, TX where they are at best the school with the 4th best brand awareness. Maybe.
  • Gotten them to a 3 seed four times
  • Gotten to the elite 8 twice (which is all Self had done when he was hired).
  • Had them ready to be a 1-2 seed last year
  • Preseason consensus top 3 team

I'm sure the haters will say something but the dude is a winner and an above average acquirer of talent.

At what point does Scott Drew get the respect he deserves nationally? Hell even on this website?

I'll keep beating the drum. Scott Drew is a good head coach and as much as it may make you want to throw up in your mouth a little bit, he should be on the short list to replace Self.

I'll take all comments off the air.

There were rumors of them moving Simmons last year. I don't think you do. Keep him and JoJo together.

What they need to do is find a way to move Horford to a bad team.

I though Garrett proved himself last year. No need to worry about him. Just get the ball up the court and play D.

Election • Oct 28, 2020 02:22 PM

@benshawks08 No the deadline is that your ballot has to be in by Nov 3 by 8PM in Wisconsin. Not postmarked. That is what you personally would like to see.

Those are the rules that were set. Everyone knows the rules. And if you don't, you disenfranchised yourself.

Election • Oct 28, 2020 02:20 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich YOU don't think it is a good reason. But you are the one who wants to change the rules when the rules are that ballots are due by 8PM on Nov 3. Anyone doing an absentee ballot knows that is the rule. Not getting it in on time is their own fault and they disenfranchised themselves.

Here is my question to you, how do you know when votes are done showing up? When do you call the election? If there are another 100k absentee ballots that were requested but never returned, how do you know when no more of them are coming? How long do you wait? Because no matter what you want to do, there is going to be a drop dead date at some point of when you stop counting votes. Even if they were post-dated correctly.

Self flips to x-axis ball in AFH! • Oct 28, 2020 01:55 PM

I must have dreamt the years where he had Amari and Nash running pick and roll and pick and pop. Almost exclusively...

But his whole thing was still 7 seconds or less. Which is more the point I'm trying to get to. An explosive offense that basically either shoots layups or threes and gets up and down the court as fast as possible.

Election • Oct 27, 2020 08:52 PM

Every day matters when transitioning power from a Lame Duck to the new President. At least traditionally. Changing the entire federal government isn't exactly flipping a switch.

Knowing Nov 3 vs knowing Nov 17th is two weeks of transitioning lost. If it was over by Nov 17th. We are talking 11 weeks to get everything in order and we want to dick around counting late votes for weeks. Its stupid.

I can't believe how much common sense has gone out the window on this. Literally 130M people will vote on time and we are arguing over whether someone should be able to have their ballot in by Nov 3 or not. Whether or not that is a reasonable expectation. It is stupid. Say 20,000 votes don't get counted because of this. That is going to be .001 percent of votes cast. That means that literally 999 out of 1000 people are able to vote on time. Or another way to put this - 129,980,000 people were able to vote correctly and timely but we are concerned with a crowd of people that wouldn't even fill a football stadium.

Election • Oct 27, 2020 08:13 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich said in Election:

That's not a reason. That's just your shitty opinion. You answered none of my questions.

Yours is an opinion too lmao. At what point is the vote over then? I mean there is a deadline one way or another dude. When do you quit counting votes? January 19th? Why do we even have it be so it has to be post marked?

If someone who didn't vote doesn't like the results and didn't vote, but it isn't January 20th yet, why don't we introduce late voting? Every vote counts.

Election • Oct 27, 2020 07:51 PM

Your vote is due Nov. 3. It isn't due Nov. 4th or 5th or 6th or 15th. It is your responsibility to get your vote in.

130M people will vote on time but we are going to hold off for, what, 10,000 people who waited until the last second to do something that could have been done already? No, I'm sorry I don't agree with that logic.

Self flips to x-axis ball in AFH! • Oct 27, 2020 07:32 PM

This team is set up to drive, draw fouls or kick out for an open 3, and play lockdown defense.

So, the Mike D'Antoni system? lol

Election • Oct 27, 2020 07:07 PM

I actually agree with the ruling and the reasoning. There needs to be a deadline. Everyone knows this happens every four years so there is no excuse for not getting your vote in.

I voted today. I do think early in person voting is something that should be available everywhere. As smooth and quick as one could hope.

Losing to the Broncos • Oct 27, 2020 04:40 PM

Chiefs are scary right now because the offense has honestly been pedestrian this season so far. And we know they can turn it up if they need to.

And then you have Willie Gay who is starting to get PT and he's looking good. Ward is still working back from an injury. Breeland is going to take a few more weeks to round out. Sneed will likely be back before the season is over. Charlton and Okafor will be back before the season is up.

Now you've also got Bell and CEH to ensure the run game will stay strong. The O-Line is getting figured out and I expect them to get better as the season goes along.

Things are looking up imo.

Self flips to x-axis ball in AFH! • Oct 27, 2020 02:00 PM

I really wish Self would bring in someone from like the Rockets or Warriors as a strategist for this particular roster.

We have an NBA roster this year. We have 6 guards/wings that are 6'5 or taller, all of whom should be getting PT. 7 if you put Wilson in that mix (I don't personally from what we saw last year). But Wilson is at least a modern NBA 4-man.

Then you have three rim-runner centers to rotate and their job is to only shoot layups.

It is time to embrace the three and pretend the shot clock is 12 seconds. It is time to put up 70 shots a game. If you are only a 7-man rotation, good luck. We are going to run you out of the gym. We have 11 guys who can play. Our three bigs are rotated like it's hockey. Our mission is to make a Roy Williams fast break look slow. We will get turnovers. We will get easy layups. We will get wide open threes. And we will shoot everything with the confidence of James Harden. We may have a game or two where we are cold and get down 15. But this is the NBA baby, that lead can disappear in 3 minutes of game time.

Of course I don't expect Self to do this. Although to his credit he did quite a bit of it the FF year. His problem was he couldn't run. We didn't have enough bodies. We had to pick and choose when to run. This year, you have the bodies...

The NCAA Belongs on Probation... • Oct 21, 2020 08:40 PM

How does UMass get hit for something that isn't even in control of the teams, nor was it intentional (as someone who works in the space there is no way it could be with how regulated financial aid is), but UNC who literally created fake classes for athletes intentionally doesn't get even as much as a slap on the damn wrist.

The NCAA is a joke of an organization. An absolute joke.

Better to just force Bill to run 4 guards than him putting it in midseason. Build that chemistry.

FF year that is how it was. Let the threes fly baby.

Josh Allen Gonna Derek Carr the Chiefs • Oct 20, 2020 07:48 PM

What is good?

Here is a list of starting QBs I would rather have for the next 5 years than Josh Allen:

  • Mahomes
  • Rodgers
  • Wilson
  • Stafford
  • Ryan
  • Burrow
  • Murray
  • Jackson
  • Watson

That's the list. Josh Allen is a top 10 QB asset right now.

Is he elite? No.

Is he good? Meh.

Is he bad? No.I think this is definitive.

Josh Allen Gonna Derek Carr the Chiefs • Oct 19, 2020 02:42 PM

I don't get what the game plan was vs the Raiders. Derek Carr will throw the underneath routes until he dies if you just bail early. And then they'll go like 30 yards every drive before it is stalled by a negative run or a penalty or something. It is his M.O.
