Louisiana-Monroe hasn't exactly been a household name in Sun Belt basketball mainly because the losses have far out numbered the wins. The Warhawks begin the 2013-14 campaign with the goal of avoiding the conference cellar for the fourth consecutive year. The struggles can be traced back to ULM having struggles putting the ball in the basket and keeping opponents from doing the same.

The Warhawks will try to change their fortunes with the addition of five JC transfers mixed in with returning starters. Amos Olatayo will be counted on to carry the scoring load after averaging nearly 16 points last season. Warhawk senior Jayon James earned a spot on the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference Preseason 3rd team and the Warhawks were tabbed for 10th in the Preseason Coaches Poll. James, a forward, led the Warhawks in rebounds (6.1), assists (5.1), blocks (0.4) and steals (1.4) last year. He averaged 9.4 points per game and scored in double-figures 13 times. He was known to be turnover prone though (4.9 per game). He posted a career-high 26 points against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 29, 2012.

The 2013-14 season will be the first time the program will have a full scholarship roster under head coach Keith Richard after inheriting APR penalties.

"Moral of the story -- don't talk during a KU game." That needs to be put on a sign so I can hang it in my living room.

NCAA Drops the Ball on Rule Changes! • Nov 07, 2013 06:55 PM

@JRyman If I had a choice of the two evils, shot clock change or enforcing these new rules, I'd rather the shot clock. Five less seconds to each possession is better than 25 extra fouls and the subsequential FTs. And if I wanted to watch a FT contest I'd join the Knights of Columbus.

@HighEliteMajor aka HEM, I couldn't agree more with everything you just said. I'd love for the NBA to go with the MLB draft setup. Junior year or Sophomore (RS).

NCAA Drops the Ball on Rule Changes! • Nov 07, 2013 06:35 PM

@drgnslayr A rule change that would help increase scoring is changing the shot clock. I know the NCAA voted on it earlier this year and it didn't pass. Moving it from 35 to 30 (like the womens shot clock) would increase the number of possessions and not cause 40 extra stoppages to shoot FTs.

The best part of the hand check rule is that it was already in the Rules book. It was just under a section of Interpretation Guidelines for officials, meaning the refs could choose what was and what wasn't a foul. And thankfully most let them play.

Do a quick search of "NCAA rules changes" on google and you'll find a bunch of articles that are already talking about the doubling of fouls called. Here's one from the Fort Worth Star Telegram. NCAA Rules Changes ↗

IMHO, I liked basketball the way it was, minus the blatant flops and that horrible "elbow" rule they put in last year. I want to see lock-down guys like Releford playing great D. If they want more offense go watch the NBA where they only play D in the post-season.

The high level of civility at this website is because of @Civilhawk. Thanks for keeping it civil. That former site with @Jerry_Bedore was out of control.

I maybe visit kusports once a day now. Haven't been there today though. Probably won't either. I'm sure they've got a good article up that I'd like and then the one by keegs. I used to click on the site every time I was at my laptop, which is a lot on the days I'm at work and have a co-worker to do half of the work! Now I spend my time refreshing this site to get the latest 'Hawks updates and commentary. I don't care to talk to "Jerry" Bedore.

No doubt their website hits are down from this time last year. And probably by a lot. I guess that's why they changed their fb only stance and came up with other ways to access.

Glad you'll get to see more, if not all, of the games @tundrahok! I think this is a great thing for KU! I always love seeing Jayhawk fans in other states and countries. I always say Rock Chalk when I run into a fellow 'Hawk.

@JayDocMD: I did a little number playing with the box score that @bayhawk posted on here from the Xavier vs Ohio game. Yikes 71 fouls, 91 FT's attempted Last nights game backs up my findings with the increase in fouls. More fouls equal double bonus free throws which led to more TV timeouts. TV timeouts equal cash for SHOECO duopoly and media-gaming complex (jaybate shout out).

I didn't get to watch the game last night. I went to a Gordon Lightfoot concert and only caught the first half of the first half on the radio. I'm guessing the increase in fouls was because of jitters with being the first game of the season, the new rules, and the first live game using new rules. It'll take a while for players to get away from their reactive arm bars and hand checks before we see a reduced number of fouls.

71 fouls and 91 FTs. I want to look at these numbers, go deeper, and figure out how much time this adds to a game.

The average number of fouls per team called last year was around 17 to 18 per game. The lowest whistled team was Michigan at 12.7 fouls per game (fpg). The highest was Morehead State with 24.9 fpg.

I'm going to play out a fake game here. Now last season Xavier averaged 17.4 fpg and Ohio 19.7 fpg. Let's say in this fake game played last year under the old rules that 30% of the pre bonus fouls (28) were in the act of shooting. Of those shooting fouls, I'll say the fouled player made 50% of the attempted shots in which they were fouled on. (28 x 0.3 = 8.4 x 0.5 = 4.2 + [4.2 x 2] = 12.6 FTs) . So that's 13(rounding up from 12.6) pre bonus FTs.

Now in the 1and1 again I'll use clips of 30% and 50%. (Note: Xavier had 17 fpg last season which means they only committed 3 1and1 fouls in my fake game. Thus making it a total of 9 1and1 fouls.) Of the 1and1 FTs I'll use a 65% both team avg. on the first shots leading to second shots. (9 x 0.3 = 2.7 shooting fouls and 6.3 non-shooting fouls. 2.7 x .5 = 1.35 +2.7 = 4.05 + [[6.3 x 0.65] x 2] + 2.205 = 14.445) So in this game last year they would have had 14 (rounding down) FTs in the 1and1.

Add the pre bonus with the 1and1 and we get 27 FTs total in this game.

Now with an average of 30 seconds to shoot the first FT and 15 seconds to shoot the second FTs we can figure out how much time is wasted with FTs. (8.4 + 9 = 17.4 total first FTs) (4.2 + 1.35 + 4.095 = 9.645 total second FTs)

17.4 x 30 / 60 = 8.7 or 9 minutes wasted with the first FTs.
9.645 x 15 / 60 = 2.4 or 2 1/2 minutes wasted with second FTs.

An estimated 11 minutes spent this fake game just shooting FTs.

Now if I use the same math as that fake game and apply it to the number of fouls committed in this REAL played game this year using the new rules (hand check, block vs. charge) let us see what we come up with...

Same number for pre bonus FTs. Add 3 more fouls in the 1and1s and we get 19.26 FTs this time around. Then with the double bonus FTs we get 31 more fouls or 62 FTs. This all totals out to be 93.86 FTs. That's pretty close to the actual number of fouls committed in the game. I'll use my numbers since I can guess first and second FTAs.

51.4 first FTAs and 42.46 second FTAs.

51.4 x 30 / 60 = 25.7 minutes.
42.46 x 15 / 60 = 10.615 minutes
This all equals out to be 36.315 minutes spent at the FT line!!! Last seasons fake game only had 11 minutes. So they've managed to triple the time spent not running the clock.

In conclusion: My main goal was to see how much time was spent shooting FTs. If this kind of whistle blowing is going to occur this season we might as well forget about catching any of our Big Monday games!!

I'm sure our friend JayBate would hypothesize that the new rules were installed by the Shoe Company Complex, ESPN/ABC/CBS basketballopoly, and the Communist USS'NCAA'R so they all can increase the number of TV timeouts which in turn increases their bank accounts thus increasing their power over us.

I also think J. Traylor will play more minutes, especially early while J. Embiid is learning the ropes.

I recall a few years ago that Jaybate and another kusports poster (can't recall the other posters name) were in a pretty heated debate. I think the other guy found who jb was and linked to a personal page of Jaybate's. Don't know if it was facebook or twitter? The guy was asking which guy jb was in the photo. Don't know if it was even the right account linked but jb played along like it was. Anyone else recall that?

Kansas, Oklahoma post game • Oct 20, 2013 04:15 PM

I thought we looked better. The passing game is still horrible. I've seen better passing in a Jr High game. At the beginning of the game we had Heaps rolling out and I thought that was a good idea. Then we went away from it. I'm not sure if they used a moving pocket after the first quarter.

To me the Cozart move was questionable. His first snap actually started out good with the big run but it was whistled back. Don't know how it would have went without that flag but I still think the timing of his insertion was off. If we were losing and needed to change things up then I'm all for throwing in Cozart. I understand Cozart practiced this week but still ripping off the red shirt when you have the lead and a trace of momentum wasn't worth it IMHO.

Special teams weren't all that great. Minus the blocked punt by Ford I would say the special teams was a disaster. Two missed field goals which one was returned by OU and then the blocked punt that resulted in a safety is uncalled for. Just a few weeks ago we thought the kicking game had improved! Maybe they stopped practicing?

All-in-all I see progress from two years ago. It just hasn't resulted in W's on the field. It all comes down to: improve the O-Line play, a better passing game, and "Weis"er play calling. It's what we say every week.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the game?

Like some of you I stuck to the shadows, infrequently commented, and mostly read. And like most this past week I've been checking out KUSports here and there to see if all or any of my/our fellow KUSports brethren came back but man has it died. I know Matt and Jesse don't want to admit it but the quality and quantity of post have gone done considerably. They're lucky to get 30+ comments now!
