Like Nerlens Noel last year, Kentucky just lost what's his name? Poythress? The article I read on it said he was their only true SF in the two platoon system they have going. I really do feel bad for the kid sustaining an injury like that, in a practice no less. But, I really am not that distressed to know that UK will have to alter or drop entirely their platoon system this year. Poythress was their best perimeter defender, or so Ive heard. Will that expose the team for a loss this year? Its unclear to me. Out of all this, I just want to see Calipari fall flat on his tookus.
I welcome anyone to add their thoughts, speculations, etc.
@globaljaybird Thanks!
@JayHawkFanToo Dude, this photo is pure awesomeness
@bskeet Nevermind, I didnt even read the other posts before my previous post.
@bskeet Neither Florida or Michigan St were ranked when we played them?
@Statmachine I agree totally. All these tough games that KU has played so far, it will make them better able to deal with the pressure certain teams like Texas will try to beat KU with. Utah has one if not two 7 footers and some pretty good guards too if I am not mistaken. This will be a close game if KU wins it. I dont know why, but I am always nervous about KU's games at the Sprint Center. Its basically a home atmosphere for KU since they are so freeking close. But I dont think that gives them an edge the way that AFH does. So far this season KU has had trouble with guys like Josh Smith and the Fleet of Footers that Kentucky threw at us. Utah is just one more test to get them ready for the conference and beyond. Lets hope they pass that test.
@drgnslayr No way Jose, we cant have the name Missouri in any part of the conference name. That just wont do at all.
@jaybate-1.0 I think its stupid that the Big 10 conference changed their name to the BI6 conference yet still call themselves the Big 10. Idiocy.
@JayHawkFanToo Is it wrong of me to think Pat Forde may very well be an inbred idiot who likes to fornicate with four legged species?
@wrwlumpy Well, regardless of the circumstances, I am guessing that Cliff will be getting Jamari's minutes for the foreseeable future.
Keep your head in the game Jamari. This team needs you.
@jaybate-1.0 yeah, that makes sense. thanks jaybate. Rock Chalk!
@jaybate-1.0 Explosiveness. Thats a confusion term to me. I see Selden finding an angle, beating his man off the dribble and slashing to the rim for a bucket, lay up or jam. He did that a few times last night. Is that not explosiveness? Is explosiveness that super quick first step off the dribble that gets you past your man and able to jump eye level with the rim like Wiggins does?
@KUSTEVE Yeah I saw that! Wayne was pumped up big time! I couldn't read his lips well enough to understand what he said to Frank.
@jaybate-1.0 Thanks for that teaching moment Jaybate. I never played ball. I just love to watch. So, I dont really have any in game experience to draw from and heavily rely on you guys and the games to gain knowledge of how the game is played. I remember seeing Hill do exactly what you described to Svi. I just rewatched the game. Mason and Devonte didnt get caught by it. Mason got blown by a couple times, I forget who by. But for the most part Mason and Devonte were playing ahead of their man. Especially in the second half.
My next question, Why did Coach Self leave 'Mari in for the last few minutes of the game? Why didnt he leave Cliff in? At this point, Cliff seems to be a better defender and he definitely has shown he is better at the FT line. Dude was money from the line in that game.
Oh yah, another one. I saw Oubre in there and he appeared to be playing the 4 for a couple minutes. Did I see that right?
@JayHawkFanToo LoL! Maybe they did. I was thinking the same thing the second time through. I dont know why they would do that. Would it give the visiting team any sort of advantage at all? Probly not. Would it let the viewers understand the announcers better? Who knows. Would it let the shoe companies draw more attention to the shoe commercials if the game wasnt as loud?
@DoubleDD Yah, after that first awful half. I thought oh man here we go again. Why cant they just fight for gosh darn darn!? I kept watching. I had to. Then KU came out and beat them up second half to win it. Thing of beauty. Im guessing Cliff is starting by conference time and averaging a double double by season end.
@jaybate-1.0 Darn, I wish there was something illegal going on. I so want to see Calipari go down in flames. That Kentucky game will live in eternal infamy.
@KUSTEVE Rondo does it with regularity. Im not saying Mason is like Rondo. I still maintain he is a lot like Sherron. But with Mason's nose for the ball, its not out of the question. He wont average double figs in boards, but I bet he gets there, or very nearly does again.
@DanR HAHA! Not nearly as striking a similarity as Svi compared with Ensign Chekov in the new Star Trek.
@jaybate-1.0 Svi's shot looks like its going in every time it leaves his hands.
@jaybate-1.0 Im gonna have to go watch the game on replay. Specifically to watch how Svi had troubles getting pinned on screens. They list his weight at 195 but Wiggs at 200 had more muscle tone than Svi does. I dont but that Svi is 195. I do get that he needs more help fighting over screens. Hudy and the great KU coaches will get him there.
I like point number 1. Its honest and true and kind of funny. Im sure that Svi still hasnt mastered all the Okie state slang terms used in Coach Self's half time upbraiding/ ass chewing.
@jaybate-1.0 Hey, if it aint broke dont fix it. If thats what those guys need to get a W on those off nights, then so be it.
@jayhawk-007 Yeah, good post! Great game. Mason is a stud. I forget his stat line but he is indeed a bulldog. Just like Sherron IMO. We haven't had a PG like him since. Devonte' impressed me last night too. You're right, we got the PG spot locked up. Those guys are playing like upperclassmen.
Cliff is a beast. I hope he comes back one more year. I probly shouldnt hold my breath on that.
@KUSTEVE Im going to hope all season long that Mason gets another 10 boards in a single game.
@ralster I hope Selden comes back next season too
@brooksmd Here's a conspiracy theory for you guys. Wonder if the Nike shoe co powers that be are paying off the refs of the UK games so they can reach 40-0 and keep funneling the steady stream of OADs to UK
@jaybate-1.0 interesting, hopefully KU can exploit that weakness when they play Texas during conference play
@jaybate-1.0 HAHA! That was great! My favs are the two about Angelina and Tesla
@brooksmd Yeah, I couldnt help myself. I had to watch this game. Wanted to see how Texas fared against UK. I turned the game on about 5 min into the half. Its an ugly ugly game. No one can make a shot, no one can make a free throw. Fouls everywhere, turnovers too. Its ridiculous. tied at half 26 all? 26, really?
@wrwlumpy Agreed, AFH is good for 5.
@jaybate-1.0 AFH is good for 5 points at least.
@JayHawkFanToo Man, Olathe West? You've got to be kidding. I went to Olathe South. At that time there was only Olathe North, South and East had opened the year before I graduated.
@nuleafjhawk There are girls posting on this site?
@JRyman You know Coach K? Wow. thats cool. I've a lot of respect for him. Even more now.
@icthawkfan316 But KU did win it all with a smallish front court. Shady and Dblock werent much bigger than what we have now. They were loads tougher though.
@konkeyDong I hope everyone comes back. I want this group to win a title together. I think they still can even if Alexander declares.
@konkeyDong I asked this question before. Do you think Cliff declares for the draft in the spring? What about Oubre? If neither of those two bail for the League next spring, then we could pretty much have everyone back. The only other guy I think wouldn't be back might be Selden if he gets his shot back...consistently. I realize its all speculation at this point but there are peeps on here that know a heck of a lot more about basketball than I do. Im guessing that Cliff is gone and Oubre is back. Which means we will need someone like Bragg and Diallo.
@drgnslayr Agreed. But, I don't want to give Cal any bit of credit for how he is running the team this year. It happened because more than a couple of his guys on last years team should have declared but didn't. Hence the need for the platoon system. Once those guys bail this spring, and they will, then will they have the talent and depth to keep it going? Probly not.
Should Coach Self do something similar with his depth in the backcourt? So far, he seems to be doing just that. Not exactly the same way. But most of the games so far have included 10 players. The video of his press conference today, he even hinted at giving Oubre more minutes later on as he starts to play instead of think. With Greene and Svi being his best shooters and in Svi's case, one of his best defenders, he wont be able to bench one guy in favor of another. I dont think so anyways. It seems like he has even accepted the necessity to change how this team plays. They dont seem to be running as much hi-lo offense that usually is a main staple of Coach Self teams.
So far, Coach Self deserves credit for thinking outside his comfort zone. I hope they continue to go 9 or 10 deep for many reasons. Best one being the recruiting edge they need to keep grasping at, and being able to put more pressure on the ball during defense.
@Statmachine Is there a link for the 60th anniversary? Id sure like to see that.
@JayhawkRock78 Nice!
Ps. I tried to link the post but it didnt work
@jaybate-1.0 What are the chances of everyone returning next season and getting no top 15 recruits? Will Oubre declare next spring even if he doesn't break the rotation? I hope he is smart enough not to do that. Will Cliff declare next spring? I think he does but there is a chance that he won't. Will Selden declare next spring? I really really really hope he does not. Does Perry declare after this season? I never really considered it until this time. I think he wants his degree more though.
@jaybate-1.0 You know what though? Now the enemy has to come to Our House, they have to brave the Phog. They will fear the Phog. Home court advantage plus a team that cut its toughness teeth.
@jaybate-1.0 That was great. I've been interested in WWII history since I heard the word and I love KU Basketball. Good stuff @jaybate-1.0
@KUSTEVE In terms of depth and experience, Im saying the 06/07 team. They really really turned it up on defense these last few games. Makes me happy. I hope it is a continuing trend!
@drgnslayr Perry didn't knock his treys down though, he can shoot it better than that
@drgnslayr He is also defending a heck of a lot better
Everyone keeps brimming over with surprize for Svi's skill in the game so far. I feel the same way. But, should we be surprised guys? The kid played for the Ukrainian National team and played in the Fiba World Cup over the summer against NBA Pros! Svi has more game experience against big time competition than any of our younger players. Now that he is seeming to get a grip on how the college game is played, his shot is falling and he has a great eye for passing and he is definitely one of our top perimeter defenders.
Svi is shaping up to be a stud. A stud who happens to look like the young Ensign Chekov from the first reboot of Star Trek.

Way to go KU! Glad to see some toughness lingering on. It seemed like a bruiser of a game to me. The refs were calling the game loosely. Lots of fouls could have been called, weren't. What's the average for foul calls so far this season guys? Are the rules from last season still slowing the game down?
Over all I thought KU battled pretty well. Wayne couldn't hit the broad side of a barn to save his life but he seemed to play solid D and help out in other ways. But yah just not a real good game for Selden. Our stars for the game were definitely Ellis with a near double double, Mason being Sherron light, Svi knocking down 3-6 treys and playing solid D, and Alexander with a solid line of 6/8/4 blocks! I was impressed with how they were rotating on defense, holding Izzo's team to 32% shooting, Not letting them get easy shots, extending their defense to the trey line and helping inside. Cliff with 4 blocks! Great game. Tough as nails game.
