@Lulufulu Nice post.
Do we have to choose between wanting the streak and wanting a deep run in the NCAAs? Can't we want both?
I very much want to meet and beat Wooden's streak. After that, finishing second one year is not the end of the world. I want KU to make history.
As far as the NCAAs being a crapshoot, I don't buy that for the first weekend. Every time a KU team doesn't make the Sweet 16, I call that a failure - in the Tournament.
@drgnslayr took money. That's why he only missed 9 games.
I'll help with the champagne! So all we need is a hula hoop horror and we'll have all the bases covered.

Don’t expect Self to push Frank into 38-minutes of play in this game to guarantee a win. He’ll be saving our guys for league play.
I'll try to remember that prediction: one of the few by you that I have trouble believing. I tend to think of Self as a compulsive winner.
@justanotherfan Thanks!
@Lulufulu Sorry, I forgot the "all fiction" disclaimer - but this is a public forum on the Internet and we should all remember that anyone can read this stuff.
If we diss Howard seriously, what's to stop pro-UK folks who have Bolden's ear to repeat what we say: "hey man, how can you even listen to this ... who even KU fans don't respect?"
He brings that he has a loyal head coach.
Other than that, he's our main recruiter with Bolden so we should be building him up. You know Bolden reads us daily, right? I think his pseudo is red rooster...

Other than McLemore, every single one of those guys should be an NBA player
And they are, you just said so yourself.
What's your point?
Outside of KU, what percentage of wings ranked in that range out of high school make it to the NBA? Without that comparison, there is no justification for "should".
@HighEliteMajor One of the best guides in history for small businesses is the Rule of St. Benedict. He made the Abbot responsible for everything, mentioning specifically details like fitting the habits.
The NCAA now agrees with St. Benedict and makes the head coach responsible for the actions of his assistants.
Coach Wooden taught his players how to put on their socks right.
I met a player from KU's 1969 Orange Bowl team. He said that season the team worked hard on basic fundamentals. The following year there was less emphasis on the details and they went downhill.
Micromanagement rules!
St. Benedict also insisted on the critical importance of recruiting. If you're going to micromanage something, that's it.
@Red.Rooster i didn't understand your post, but I upvoted it because you upvote all the other posts ;)
@KU-Flyer To qualify he has to have a minimum ACT score, a minimum GPA and core courses. A higher GPA can compensate for a lower ACT.
He has a time limit for doing all that, and time is up. To have more time, he would have had to reclassify to 2016.
If he meets some of the requirements but not all, he is a "partial qualifier" like Jamari and McLemore.
Partial qualifiers go through another hoop after the NCAA: a Big 12 committee that says yea or nay. To Jamari and McLemore they said nay.
I suspect we are going to see a partial qualifier, but maybe closer to full than those two so with a better chance of getting by. I imagine if he isn't cleared he will lose a year, not a semester.
What chance do we have for a presumed OAD with American citizenship who goes to a real high school?
(Unless we get lucky and his Mom takes out a nice loan...)
@REHawk The big 12 only rules if Diallo is a "partial qualifier", meaning either ACT or GPA was not OK.

@ParisHawk If it's required by the basketball program, I would say it's basketball related.
The walkon's father said 6 hours a day. He didn't count tutoring.
If you add tutoring as basketball related, why not say attending classes is basketball related, since that is definitely required by the basketball program?
@JhawkAlum I met the father of a KU walkon under Roy and he said 6 hours a day. Show up one hour before practice to get dressed and taped. Cool off and shower after practice - that time is outside practice but you have to spend it.
Tutoring is not a sport-related activity, but I wouldn't count it either as something the SA is "paid" to do - it's rather a goody that others would pay to have.
@drgnslayr Kaun's wife is American and they have been living in the USA during the off season for a few years.
They flew in from Russia for the 2012 title game. I think they want a shorter flight in 2016 ;)
@wissoxfan83 from http://www.scholarshipstats.com/ncaalimits.html ↗ ↗
"Most NCAA varsity programs are equivalency sports which means awards can be split into partial scholarships in any proportion up to the maximum allowed. For example, an NCAA Division I school can allocate a number of partial athletic scholarships equivalent to 11.7 full scholarships in any proportion among, say, 25 baseball players.
Full scholarships are relatively rare in equivalency sports. An additional caveat is that there is a top limit of the number of athletes that can be awarded even a partial scholarship in an equivalency sport - this limit is referred to as the maximum number of counters. For NCAA I baseball teams the maximum number of counters allowed is 27.
There are fewer NCAA head- count sports than equivalency sports; head count sports mean the stated scholarship limit is absolute, and the number of student athletes receiving awards cannot exceed this number. NCAA I football and basketball are headcount sports..."
@nuleafjhawk I was going to say out loud you are holding a grudge a bit too long - but I'll just think it...
@Texas-Hawk-10 Whoa, podner! By "selfish" I simply meant Embiid gave us great pleasure with his quick progress and occasional out-of-nowhere moves. I for one would be pleased to see more of that in the NBA, in addition to my "selfless" wish for his own happiness and fulfillment.
@HighEliteMajor Embiid shouldn't have any money worries, true.
He was given to hope that he could have an exciting, fulfilling life playing basketball at an extremely high level. Now he can't go to work for two years in a row, is uncertain about his professional future and is dealing with the death of a younger brother while forcibly idle.
Having great expectations dashed, being stuck idle for two years, losing a loved one: that hurts even when you are financially secure.
Not to mention the selfish wish on our part to see him realize the amazing potential we glimpsed at KU.
@drgnslayr I see what you're saying, but over the years many posters have said the opposite: Self gives too few development minutes early in the season because he wants to win each game, or at least stay in his comfort zone.
Cliff Alexander is the exception not the rule: a player who was "educated" by sitting, even when his 80% effort was more productive than the 99% effort of the guys he watched. Self usually plays the guy he knows he will win with, while educating in practice.
@justanotherfan There is the first round NIT loss as well. Lots of coaches could have produced that.
I'm not saying that year carries more weight than a successful year, but it shouldn't be ignored.
@JayHawkFanToo said:
If Embiid's career ends without having played one game, based on his first contract alone he probably will make several time what the average person makes in a lifetime of hard work, so financially he is set.
A business has revenue and profit. No one is surprised if profit is a lot less than revenue.
When we look at a player's salary, we think of that as profit. In fact, it is revenue.
Players have to pay agents and trainers among others, in addition to helping family with their first contract.
I would be curious to know what percentage of Embiid's contract is actually net profit for him that he can live on in the future. Half? A third? Just wondering.
What's the big deal about Self's PR strategy? Who's going to switch to KSU because Self didn't give us a heads up on Diallo's eligibility issue?
I care infinitely more about what Self does than what he says.
Is he doing what it takes to prepare the team, given current uncertainty about when Diallo will be eligible?
As I said earlier, maybe playing Hunter a lot and Traylor very little has to do with who can (sort of) fill Diallo's shoes in case he is cleared late.
@REHawk "Pay a heavy price...steep precipice."
I basically agree with you but let's not exaggerate.
At worst, he will have to go to school an extra year with free education, room and board.
It would not be the end of the world for Diallo.
I do hate how long this stuff takes, but I believe they have lots of football players to look at first.

I’m going to my first Royals game next weekend since my last game in 1985 at the World Series!!!
Were you throwing around the beach ball while Saberhagen was pitching? It never got near my seat.
Could Mickelson be this year's Rodrick Stewart?
Let me explain.
In 2007-2008, Rush comes back but needs time to complete recovery from an ACL injury. Instead of shifting his best remaining players around, Self just plugs Rodrick Stewart into Rush's place in the rotation.
Sure, Stewart is no Rush and will not shoot lots of 3s, but he allows Self to keep his basic offensive and defensive schemes and keep the other players in their normal roles.
When Rush comes back, Self unplugs Stewart and plugs in Rush with minimal adjustments.
Now this year, Self expects / hopes that Diallo will be available to play this year, but maybe not right away. In case there is a delay in clearing Diallo, how can Self avoid having to prepare two different teams: the one with Diallo and the one without?
The "Stewart method" would be to plug in the player who can best substitute for Diallo, while keeping everybody else in the same roles. Enter Mickelson, a guy who can block, keep the ball alive on both ends and score cleanup baskets.
Mickelson can play the Diallo role better than Lucas, whose strength is knowing Self's system, and Traylor, who is more of a stretch 4 (or shrink 3).
The bad news for Mickelson in this comparison: when Rush came back, Stewart went from starter to deep freeze - I mean completely out of the rotation.
@JayHawkFanToo Nice summary. Let me add from the Jamari / McLemore situation:
the NCAA said they "partially qualified", meaning either the admission test was OK or the GPA / core coursework was OK, but not both.
In that case there is a Big 12 faculty committee that decides on immediate eligibility. That committee said no, they have to study a year to be eligible.
So, if my memory and understanding are all right, then Diallo could either qualify or not qualify or partially qualify.
At any rate, as you explained Diallo is already a KU student under scholarship. He is just not cleared to play yet.

My issues with Morningstar are over-documented. Self had other options there. Ugh.
You seem to forget Self's brilliant use of Morningstar in 2008: he had him redshirt.
@Texas-Hawk-10 To be fair, KU needed to play a slower tempo Wayne Simien's last season so he could play max minutes and get max touches. At least that was Self's explanation at the time.
@Texas-Hawk-10 right on, and 6 hours a day dedicated to helping teammates get better.
@drgnslayr Don't forget wheat from Wellington. Year in year out in the top 5 donations.
@BeddieKU23 My point was that KU is judge if Diallo can come to KU and can get a scholarship (athletic or otherwise). The NCAA is judge for his eligibility to play.
Diallo is "approved for college" by KU.
He is not (yet) approved to play by the NCAA.
There is not one process; there are two processes.
I wasn't aware of what @justanotherfan wrote above, that summer school may be able to remedy lacking credits. I stand corrected on that point.
I think the last few posts are on the wrong track here.
The NCAA decides whether a freshman is eligible based on HS grades and ACT scores. Remedial courses in college don't count.
KU can let Diallo enroll and give him a scholarship, but that has nothing to do with his eligibility to play.
Lots of incoming freshmen show up early and take summer classes, whether they have eligibility problems or not.
Diallo being in summer school has no bearing on the NCAA thing.
@JayHawkFanToo oh, additional posts on your part only. I must have misunderstood, sorry.

Not even close to exhausted as a topic or you wouldn't be responding.
Ah, an appropriate and succinct reply. When @JayHawkFanToo plays pickup, he must have a special rule that he always gets the last shot.
If you want a player that you can fit into Self's system, Graham trumps Frankamp.
If you want to get the most out of Frankamp, you have to adjust the system more. Self is not great at adjusting his system to fit a player, particularly a fringe rotation guy.
Basketball doesn't have a DH.
So did anyone at all in the media say "hm, looks like we sent better coaching to the WUG"? Thought not...
@REHawk Another common thread, at least recently: make sure Self's best big (at the 5 position) doesn't suit up, and make sure the other key guys play worn down and beat up.

Embiid translated to nothing in March.
A bit harsh, considering he wasn't a presumed OAD and he was missing because of injury.
Also, remember he was expected to come back for the second weekend. Embiid didn't let us down, Self let Embiid down by letting himself be outcoached against Stanford.
@KUSTEVE Good answer. Works for me.

Just wondering about the mindset that came up with the run up the score plan.
It comes with pool or group play. You play round robin in your group and teams are going to have the same won/lost record, so you have to have tie breakers.
We're not used to that in basketball. Look at football (BCS): the top teams run up the score to look good.
What tie breaker would you suggest?
@jayballer54 The top three teams are likely Serbia, Brazil and KUSA. We already beat Brazil. Serbia has not played either of us. So we have several chances to get into the medal round. I am assuming we beat everyone else but Serbia.
We beat Serbia. Result: we finish first.
Serbia beats us and Brazil. Result: we finish second with one loss vs. Brazil with two losses.
Serbia beats us and loses to Brazil. Result: three teams with one loss and the tie breaker is used.
I'm not exactly sure what the tie breaker is. I assume it's point differential, which is why the better teams are beating up on the lesser teams. Our first two victories were narrow, which is not good, but we did hand Chile their worst loss. I don't want to do the arithmetic without knowing what the tie breaker really is.
@KUSTEVE thanks!
Meaning what is the score?
Game blacked out outside of us. Scores?
@dylans To be fair, the basic idea is to guarantee lots of games for everyone, so everyone gets in a bracket after pool play.
