Why are they still zoning us?
Because Huggins (like self tbh) believes the other team will eventually miss threes.
@wissox said in WhiskeyVU Game Thread:
Justt hoisting up 3's right now. We've shot way more 3's than 2's which is not in HCBS's DNA
Pound it in to Dave coming.

Did something bad happen..
Just an off the ball foul on Wilson I think.
@wissox busy typing again? Also, no idea.
@BeddieKU23 he loves the moment.
@Kcmatt7 lord of assists when threes are falling.
@DanR If they counted all of em we’d be in the bonus
When is the last time we had a shoooting contest with west virgins?
@wissox said in WhiskeyVU Game Thread:
Complaint. Sometimes I'm typing so much for my next whitty witticism that I don't even pay attention to the game.
So you just delete the witty stuff and post what we see?
@DanR said in WhiskeyVU Game Thread:
Kind of dumb to block it out of bounds, but it was Culver's shot, so that would be hard to resist
With 3 on the shot clock it’s not a terrible play.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in WhiskeyVU Game Thread:
@wissox blocked a shot
Even that ended in an extra point for wvu
@BeddieKU23 can’t wait to find out he’s been shooting 18%for the year...

@benshawks08 worked against TTech last week!
Results don’t lie.
@DanR said in WhiskeyVU Game Thread:
You could foul on a three and hope he misses one of the freebies like KU did.
This strategy seems sub optimal
@wissox said in Exclusive! Wissox snags game notes from coach Self.:
@nuleafjhawk I'm glad you said it. I hate it that guys miss FT's. Every college team should be 80%. It's a flick of the wrist. I can do it and I'm 56 years old! For goodness sakes bill Self, hire me to be FT coach! Even Doke would have made, well, not 80% but hack a doke if I'm coach? NO WAY!!
Free throws are more mental than physical at the college level. Word always was doke shot fine when practicing. It’s about focus, managing adrenaline, fatigue, etc.
Yeah sure I can go to an empty gym and make 8-10 (well back before Covid when I went to the gym). But if you put most of us in a game situation where we’ve been fully exerting ourselves for 20 plus minutes, in a packed house, on national tv, in a game with real implications that 8-10 goes out the window. Some of that you just can’t simulate in practice.
It’s like a tee shot over water. There’s nothing fundamentally different about the motion you are trying to make but the mental challenge can be significant.
@drgnslayr Yeah. I see that. I guess my thought was more along the lines of pausing EVERYTHING. Like just pretend the next 6 weeks are so nothing happens.
I also don’t understand the harm in just pushing. Like why not end the season in June or July? Because the tv deals are already done for March?
@drgnslayr I also think with the vaccine sooooo close we can really just save a ton of lives right now until that can be widely distributed. The end is in sight. Let’s get as many people there alive as we can.
Bucketteers may have some thoughts on this part of that graph:

Ooooof. This is some good perspective.
And the even broader look:

@drgnslayr I’m also lost kinda like I am with schools opening/closing/remote. There’s not a good choice really. Any way you cut it someone gets the short end of the stick. My instinct on this would be to put safety above all the other concerns and if you start there, shutting stuff down is the best option. I’m not saying those other things don’t matter.
I taught basically this entire semester remotely (even though I had to be at school my students stayed home) and I just turned in the longest list of student failures in my 13 years as a teacher. And that’s with me making things as simple and straightforward as possible. So clearly remote teaching (at least the way I’m doing it) isn’t working. But the alternative puts 15-35 teenagers in the same room during a pandemic. Even with almost all the kids remote, the virus has still spread at my school.
I can’t remember who made it but there is a graphic called pyramid of needs where safety is the base. If you aren’t safe, none of the rest of the needs can be met.

This season alone Self is 4-0 in games decided by four points or less, and he’s 69-38 in those scenarios in 18 seasons at Kansas. He’s also 24-9 in overtime games.
From an article on the athletic.
Those stats don't even seem real. Guess the guy might be able to coach a bit or else he's VERY lucky.
Putt in Mitch. He’s good at flopping.

Bull shaking his head at these calls.
@BeddieKU23 EVERY TIME
Harris should have just fallen down.
I saw Harris pass up an open look to get garret a guarded three at the buzzer. Oooof.
Have we seen the small line up? I’ve been distracted.
no effort on that rebound
@DanR who is watching this game still that doesn’t know way more than these guys?!
@wissox Ouch. That hurts all the way around.

@benshawks08 Easily the best coaching gig at the high school level.
They tried to get me to coach the third team for basketball but with my other positions on campus I couldn’t manage all of it.
If you’re wondering, I’m that teacher that’s bad at saying no when admin needs someone to do something.

Interesting thread here from Jesse. May explain what was going on with big Dave on that late I’m the game look for three.

@wissox I’m a high school golf coach, not a golf professional. I hang around in the high 70s and low 80s but certainly know enough to get some kids who’ve never played before started and coach up some kids with a little experience. Not a ton of interest in the game in my school community so I don’t have to be an expert. Have a few connections with some actual golf teaching professionals for the kids who want to get more serious.

I think Dave has it in him to be a good passer. If he can work on kicking it out and making quicker decisions with the ball in the post he can do better to stay on the floor. It's interesting because we all watch him and he LOOKS "sped up" or like the game is too fast but I think that's more of a symptom of being slow in making decisions. If he keeps the ball in the post and takes a dribble or makes a move, by the time he does it, guards are digging down, and his defender claims the space he's trying to move into. Maybe we actually need Dave to SPEED UP?!
Had an old coach tell me once, slow down to go fast.
My favorite to tell my golfers is "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast"

@FarmerJayhawk Yeah but his idea gets rid of state and local relief which ALREADY has wide bipartisan support in exchange for getting rid of his liability shield which is purely Republican supported. Not exactly how compromise works...
@wissox He's definitely heard of them. Whether or not he uses them or not....
That number is neither good or bad in and of it self. But since he is turning it over and shooting a low percentage it means he is ending too many of kus possessions without scoring where other players would be more efficient.
So 3/10 times when Dave is in, the possession ends because of him.
@wissox Usage % is the % of possessions a player ends. They do so by scoring, missing, assisting, or turning it over.
Come on folks....

He definitely gave us some net positive minutes last night. I liked how he would set the high screen and dash to the lane which would create spacing and reaction from the defense. His PER is still influenced greatly by limited minutes.
As it should be. I feel like this should be the bulk of what Mitch does. Come in for spot minutes. Set good screens, create some space, pick up some rebounds by out hustling the opponent.
He can provide some BONUS production if he can block a few shots, get a put-back, etc. But it should generally be in limited minutes.
I especially liked his hustle to break up a late lob by fouling the player attempting to finish the slam. Saved at least 1 (maybe 2 even, can't remember) points which in this game was pretty significant.
If there is one thing the players DON'T need aftera ton of games every other day almost, it's the treadmill! Rest and recovery. Och will be fine. I imagine we will see a couple more games like this from him this year but like @BeddieKU23 said, his D doesn't really seem to suffer even when his shot isn't falling. The turnovers are pretty much there good game or bad for him. Just part of his game unfortunately.
Mitch McConnell continuing to do Mitch McConnell things....
