I feel like we lack speed
Ugh those rebounding numbers...
@msanchez I do think some of KUs physicality was held up by some early calls.
@BShark 1.43 ppp is insane.
Ok anyone know the score? Iāve now seen both 46 and 47
After those first 10 minutes, single figures at the half is a blessing. Letās see if we can bring some consistent defensive pressure in the second half. Saw it a few possessions but need it every time down the floor.
Youāve got to be kidding
A stop and a bucket would be a really good way to end this half.
@RockkChalkk ā if acting in the best interests of my family over the interests of someone three degrees removed from me makes me selfish, call me selfish all day long i donāt care.ā This to me says, me and mine are worth more than you and yours. Am I wrong?
You called a global pandemic that has killed 300,000 Americans a political exaggeration.
You said you hoped it came off as insensitive.
Yeah, I took some steps you hadnāt, but they were down the path you started down.
Not sure why it should be deleted but I agree I probably went too far and my goal was not to come off as insensitive so sorry if I offended.
Something positive to think about.

Iād love to live in a country where 1 persons life made for a compelling argument. Iād settle for a place where 1000s of live could do it. Instead we are in a place where 100s of thousands of lives just arenāt that compelling.
@ajvan That studies had all kinds of problems and was only published so that folks didnāt think it was being buried. Only 46% of the group who were supposed to always wear masks reported actually doing that...
@RockkChalkk said in so looks like Covid starting to cause problems with basketball already:
@benshawks08 if acting in the best interests of my family over the interests of someone three degrees removed from me makes me selfish, call me selfish all day long i don't care. My family wears our masks, takes germ spreading seriously, and try our best not to get ourselves or anyone else sick. They are my priority and always will be no matter what names people want to call me.
The ironic thing about this all is you are using your perspective as a teacher to diminish other people's views and don't even realize it. Its the same thing you called me selfish for. As a teacher, you are measuring the importance of school vs a bar or school vs a gym and saying school is unquestionably more important to "everyone." Tell that to the families of the owners of the bar and gym that government has mandated must close their doors because their business isn't important. Sorry sir, this business you worked your a$$ off to build, that provides income to feed and shelter your family, must close for an indeterminate amount of time because someone who comes here could possibly pickup the virus and then spread it to someone else who spreads it to someone else who spreads it to someone else that dies from it.
It goes beyond gyms and bars but you chose those examples to make your argument appear to be a simple choice. The small mom and pop retail stores that could be three generations of life savings put into the business are told they aren't essential and must close until government says so. But their main competition - Target across the street is considered essential and can remain open. I could go buy a tennis racket at Dick's Sporting Goods but can't get a haircut. Apparently its considered acceptable risk if someone gets the virus from a Target store and spreads it to others but not if they get it from a gym and it spreads to others.
Its a tough situation and there isn't a good answer that works well for everyone. Hopefully this vaccine is ready soon and things can get back to normal. This virus already stole a championship from our Hawks, hopefully it doesn't take more games away from us. I mean, seeing them beat up on Kentucky sounds pretty essential to me! :)
And there's why this thing isn't going away. If you don't care about people 3 degrees removed from you, than you don't care about people in general and that may be fine for you but to me it's the biggest problem in our culture today. To think that people 3 degrees removed have no bearing on your life, well-being and livelihood is just ignorant.
I'm not saying school is more important than bars because I'm a teacher. If you don't think education is more important that being able to drink at a certain location rather than home than we obviously have vastly different views on what matters. I picked bars and gyms because they are proven places where the virus has spread. Grocery stores have to stay open because people need food and supplies. Restaurants can operate to-go and curbside. Not ideal for the business owners for sure but life is more important than profit. Target sells essential goods. Gyms do not. Bars do not. If a mom and pop store sells essential goods than they should stay open too.
There need to be services and support for those struggling financially amid a shut down but just letting things go as they are now is just unacceptable. Over 2000 people died from COVID yesterday in the U.S. I guess that's fine for you as long as you didn't know any of them.
@jayballer67 They also can't monitor every highway to make sure people aren't speeding. Than can notice when folks are recklessly endangering others say if one house has 15 cars in front of it or a person is reported by a business owner as refusing to wear a mask. As with any law, in my opinion, the goal should not be to catch and punish but to prevent, educate and redirect. Most people don't get a ticket every time they get pulled over. Most noise complaints don't end in arrests. But it is nice for say a police officer or health official to be able to say, "sorry sir, that is the law" and for that to be true.
@approxinfinity Yeah, and here it is really my school community more than any policy keeping people safe. Anyone who wanted to could come back to school right now. I have no idea how I would handle a full class of 30 students. Another school in our district had to shut down for a week after evidence of spread in the school. It is wholly NOT surprising considering from July-October, a group of parents from that school were at all the school board meetings arguing against remote learning, mask mandates at school, and any other restrictions on their "freedom."
I thought this was a good look at how deadly COVID-19 really is with some good comparisons. Helps give some perspective to what 250,000 deaths really means.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/18/health/covid-19-deaths-us-250k-trnd/index.html ā
Some might look at this and say, "See, heart disease and cancer kill more per year than coronavirus but we don't shut down the economy for that..." but heart disease and cancer aren't contagious.
And @RockkChalkk I'm not trying to be rude but this "At the end of the day, this whole C-19 debate comes down to each individualās perspective and whats most important to their family." comes off to me as selfish. This whole thing continues to spread because individuals are making decisions based on what is best for them rather than what is best for everyone. As a healthy, white, fully employed, fairly healthy 35(??) year old, my risk of death or even serious complications if I get the virus are fairly low. I could take risks knowing my well being would not be greatly affected by even a few weeks of some significant illness. The problem is because of how insanely contagious this virus is, those risks I might feel comfortable taking knowing my situation can have deadly impacts on people I don't even know. There are examples over and over and over again of family gatherings, weddings, funerals, parties, etc, leading to hundreds of cases and deaths of people who never even attended the event.
I'm incredibly lucky to work at a school where 90% of the students have elected to attend remotely. I have between 0-4 kids in my in person classes every day. Even in this nearly IDEAL scenario for controlling the spread of the virus, the level of anxiety and vigilance I have to maintain is exhausting.
A kid needs help? All my training and experience says, go kneel next to them and figure out what they need.
Problems with your computer? Let me show you which buttons to push to get to where you need to go.
Instead I have to keep my distance and explain from afar. Doesn't seem like a big deal but try cooking an omelet from six feet away from the stove without touching the pan.
And those are the easy ones.
But if I don't keep that vigilance, if I take risks I can be pretty sure won't kill me, I could pass the virus to my student who lives with grandma who has diabetes but has to come to school in person because the internet at their house can't handle he and his 3 siblings on a zoom call at the same time.
I've honestly come around since starting school that schools do need to be open as long as the spread at schools can be prevented (not sure how you do that when positivity rate starts skyrocketing like it is now). There are kids who need a school building to learn in, a teacher to interact with, and a safe place to get the support they need. But in order to do that we need to prioritize keeping schools open by shutting down non-essential business, operating remotely and utilizing curbside as much as possible, and WEARING A DAMN MASK, KEEPING DISTANCE, AND WASHING HANDS REGULARLY!
It really comes down to some simple questions.
Schools or bars?
Schools or gyms?
Schools or large gatherings bringing together multiple households?
We CAN keep schools safe, but we need everyone's help and not just if it's what's best for your family.
@jayballer67 Itās not going to end it but it will be nice to have a president who believes in science running the governments response to this instead of a guy who just got bored and gave up. Iām hoping we may have it under control by the summer.
Until then, stay in as much as possible, order to go, wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay at least 6 feet away from other people!
The four seasons total landscaping stuff is just too much. Writers of āveepā are so mad they didnāt think of that!

Someone who knows more than me tell me about this?
Just curious. Anyone here vote for trump in 16 but Biden this year? Or Clinton in 16 and Trump this year?
@approxinfinity Think we need to prepare ourselves for election WEEK as results may not be conclusive when we go to bed on Tuesday or Wednesday or even Thursday.
@FarmerJayhawk Yeah. You donāt get to decide who are nincampoops. Sorry if you donāt like the way they vote but thatās democracy.
Your vote isnāt more important or better than anyone elseās.
Citizenship tests for voting is a TERRIBLE idea. Now a test for the candidates I could be down for.
If I have to pass a certification test to teach I could get behind a certification test to take public office.
The problem is who writes the test? Every test is biased and that could be a big problem considering the current state of biases in the US.
@FarmerJayhawk Perhaps we should work at creating a political system that doesnāt magically reveal a candidateās character mere weeks before an election. If we know something in July, maybe donāt hold on to it for an āOctober surprise.ā
To me more people voting is always a good thing. Should voters be as informed as possible? Of course. But turn out is the biggest issue for me. Their are too many systemic barriers that make voting more difficult for some than it is for others. They are there on purpose and doing exactly what they are designed to do. Anything that helps people get around or over those barriers is good to me. Early voting does that.
@FarmerJayhawk that is why no one is required to vote early...
Info like that isnāt necessarily destined for October. People cheat, lie, and commit crimes all year round. If I vote on November 3rd and the person I voted for does any of the things you mentioned Iād still be upset.
I actually agree with the ruling and the reasoning. There needs to be a deadline. Everyone knows this happens every four years so there is no excuse for not getting your vote in.
I voted today. I do think early in person voting is something that should be available everywhere. As smooth and quick as one could hope.
There is a deadline. Postmarked by Nov. 3rd is a deadline. The sitting government screwing with the post office so that mail is slowed amid a pandemic shouldn't change that deadline.
@FarmerJayhawk Why is more opportunities for people to vote bad? Shouldn't the goal to be to get EVERYONE to vote? I mean, it's clearly not the goal of one side. But who cares if you vote in September, October or November? I've known who I was going to vote for for that long...
Hmm.... wonder why some people wouldnāt want to count all the votes?
@FarmerJayhawk I'm interested in how you view the Merrick Garland situation in comparison to this. It seems clear to me that republicans are doing all they can to pack the court with conservative judges, and their stated goal in doing so is to overturn the cases you say aren't going anywhere. It doesn't seem like panic mongering to think a shift from what should have been a 5-4 democratic appointed majority to a 6-3 republican appointed majority could have major consequences for many cases that have had close rulings in the past.
And as for your take on Whitehouse, he may be hypocritical, but is he wrong? This, "groups like FedSoc, which are mostly campus organizations that have to bribe people with catered dinner to listen to lawyers talk about law" seems like a massive undersell from you on the power and influence of groups like this. Dark money is definitely bad for politics and it cracks me up to hear conservatives whine about "special interest groups" when they receive more funding than anyone from those special interests, and then block any attempts to do anything about it. It's clear who WANTS the dark money to stay and who is forced to use it just to keep up.
Not sure if boredom is still an issue but I thought Iād recommend some of the most entertaining stuff Iāve read in a long time. Jon Bois at sbnation is in the process of releasing a āsportsā story called 20020. Itās the sequel to 17776 which billed itself as a story about the future of football. These two pieces are wildly creative, way off the wall, and difficult to describe without sounding like a lunatic. But I know some people on here enjoy that off beat creative energy so I thought this was a good place to share. If you havenāt read 17776, start there as the sequel might make a little more since with the background knowledge.
To give just a hint, those titles are actually the year the stories take place and the story is mostly told through the characters of space probes that after many years have become sentient. So yeah. Itās out there.
Hereās a link (and no your computer/phone isnāt breaking): https://www.sbnation.com/a/17776-football ā
"It's a crime to tamper with juries. It's standard practice to tamper with congress." What a perfect statement.
@FarmerJayhawk The only thing Iāve seen here close to hateful is @BShark laughing and saying itās well deserved. None of that does any harm to trump in the least. Whereas trumps willful endangerment of the people he works for and the people who work for him has put them at risk over and over again. So forgive me excusing the former and condemning the latter.
I, personally feel the same way as when a certain family member of mine got it. He too, arrogantly ignored guidelines, considered it all a hoax, and put his family and coworkers at risk. I wanted him to have a full recovery but wouldnāt have been too upset if a little short term suffering humbled him a bit.
It does blow my mind that folks who have absolutely no sympathy for those truly suffering right now (@FarmerJayhawk im not talking about you but instead many of trumps supporters) now demand sympathy for this man who we all assumed would contract this thing eventually. The party of personal responsibility for the poor, who have often have no good choices, completely ignores any personal responsibility trump has in this situation. He had all the resources and knowledge to keep himself and others safe and he simply chose not to.
P.s. He is also fully responsible for the discourse turning so vile and hateful so feel little need to protect him from the fire he stoked.
@mayjay Black people certainly are not a monolith who all have the same desires and beliefs so yeah simple solutions will not work.
My complaint is if everyone thinks like the appraiser in the article that well itās not really our problem, nothing is going to change. Itās going to take all of us. To me at this point, if you arenāt thinking about how your industry is contributing to systemic racial inequity and trying to actively promote equity, than what are you doing?
As you and @FarmerJayhawk illustrate, the issue is so vast and multifaceted itās impossible for one organization to solve on their own. To promote a more equitable society takes a MASSIVE collaboration between government, community, and industry. If a person in a leadership role can look at those massive disparities and think, meh, not my problem, than I donāt have much use for them honestly. Just get out of the way and let someone who cares lead. I get that itās hard to think about because of all the variable you rightly raise but to refuse to address it is in my opinion immoral.
@FarmerJayhawk Itād be cool if those things work but I do worry about a lot of folks inherit racism just totally mucking up any free market solution. Have you listened to ānice white parentsā podcast? Iāve only gotten a few episodes in but it definitely speaks about school funding and specifically school choice as thatās huge in New York apparently. I almost lost my mind when at one point the person reporting drops the stat that one schools pta raised $800,000 compared to $2,000 at another. Itās an interesting glimpse because itās focusing on white parents trying to integrate New Yorkās very segregated schools. I can only listen to so much serious stuff after a week of online teaching so I havenāt finished it yet. Shit is draining.
@FarmerJayhawk How does one go about decoupling housing from schools? Does the cap on funding do that?
I know for example austin isd already sends a lot of its funding from property tax back to the state for redistribution. Would what your suggesting be more of that?
I certainly agree solutions will need to be out of the box, rethinking the system from the ground up kind of things. I just donāt know enough about the housing market to even know what would work.
@mayjay ah yes, me the high school teacher will certainly have the solution to a complex problem in an industry I know little about. Seems to me experts discussing the issue would probably come up with something better. Itās not wrong to expect people to address major issues of inequity in their own industry.
It is completely irrational to think the only way to change things is to propose a solution. Solutions start with identifying a problem. If simply comparing prices is contributing to the vast financial disparity between racial groups perhaps thinking of a different way might be in order.
Itās not about attributing blame but instead taking responsibility. Itās not a current appraisers fault, but that doesnāt mean it isnāt their problem. Just like inequitable school discipline isnāt my fault but is my problem. One I discuss with my colleagues so we as educators can come up with ideas to address it.
@FarmerJayhawk Not a terrible idea...
@mayjay
ā Jeff Sherman, president of the Appraisal Institute, an international real estate appraisersā professional association, declined to comment on the new research because he hadnāt reviewed it, and said he wasnāt aware of prior studies about this problem. He did know about a 2018 study from the Brookings Institution on the devaluation of properties in Black neighborhoods, he said, because the institute testified at a congressional hearing on the subject. He said he doesn't see systemic racism in the industry, and that the leaders and members of his organization havenāt discussed racial disparities.ā
They could start by recognizing thereās an issue and ya know, discussing it. Canāt come up with a solution if theyāre happy pretending thereās not a problem.
@mayjay See, to me the point of that article was that THE WHOLE system is racist because it's based on all the racism you outlined. Even the market itself is racist because white people will pay more to segregate themselves with other white people. Appraisers are part of that system. There are things they can do to address the racism in their field within their level of influence. They should do that.
Clearly Iām in a good mood...
