KSU vs WVU β€’ Jan 28, 2015 06:55 PM

@BeddieKU23

"I start thinking more and more that we can sneak away from the game in West Virginia with a win."

I'm trying to not get too optimistic of a road win at WVU. I don't want to get my hopes too high. First... we play them away before AFH, so that means our first experience is there, and if they receive some home-cooking refs and have the crowd as violent as their play, it will take some insane poise to leave there with a victory. My expectations are directed mostly towards this being a great learning experience. But a win would be awesome and help solidify #11 while helping build our confidence for March.

A lot can change between now and then... I'm mostly thinking of injuries. I hope we stay healthy, and WVU has to be praying that Staten can stay healthy because as you said, they pose a lot less potential when he's not on the floor. He is currently struggling with a bad wrist.

I'm curious if Nino's injury is serious or not. The commentators mentioned a tendonitis issue. That can be very serious and plague a guy for the rest of the year. He could have suffered a partial tear along his leg bone. That's what got me and I continued to play until I completely ripped my tendon away from the bone, sending my patella all the way up my upper quad, ending my playing days.

@globaljaybird

I caught that... Weber playing the "victim" card. You never want your coach projecting weakness like that. I have some fundamental issues with Weber, and that is at the top of my list.

Your team is going to reflect the attitude of their coach. WVU plays rough and aggressive because Bob is that way and he instills it in his players. So what does Weber project to his guys?

I don't like to yack down on the purple kitties because they usually help us out in conference. They have played some solid ball this year... good for them. I always keep hope that KSU will build back to a quality Jack Hartman built, but I have my doubts that Weber will be the guy to do it. Bring back Frank Martin. He is more dignified and maintains more of a fighting attitude, something the kitties need.

KSU vs WVU β€’ Jan 28, 2015 04:56 PM

Bravado... That is the only word I can think of to describe Bob "Huggy Bear" Huggins.

Last night, Bob and his players brought their swagger into the "Sherronagon of Death."

How dare Bob come in and muscle around his old team?

Bob will tell you... he was forced to play "maul ball" with his old employer. Somehow, you get the feeling that Bob is no longer welcome in Manhattan, Kansas.

This is one of the strangest beginnings to a game. I believe WVU fouled 3 times within the first minute... and none of them soft fouls. It was obvious that Bob wanted his swagger to rule this game. He wanted KSU to focus more on how they were going to get muscled around and hacked instead of playing a game of basketball. His strategy worked. In the first 20 minutes, the purple kitties must have missed every bunny shot they attempted, and they attempted plenty.

Bob has taken a very different approach to basketball than anyone else in our league. His desire is to play a different brand of basketball (if you want to call it that) and force his opponents into his kind of game. And it is very hard not to fall into his trap, just like it is not easy to avoid his full-court traps.

Bob brings intensity to the game, and through his form of rough-housing intensity he wants to not only disrupt the typical play of his opponents, he wants to disrupt their identity in the process. He makes teams question their own strategies, he makes teams question their ability to play the basic elements of the game (passing and dribbling), and last (and perhaps most important) he makes individual opposing players question their manhood. That is quite an accomplishment to pull off in a game strategy, and Bob pulled it off masterfully last night. I had seen KSU before last night, and then I experienced what they became after Bob got a hold of them, and they were not the same team.

I'm excited to see how we do against the heavy pressure and tactics of this Bob Huggin's team. I know, in past years, we haven't always fared well against full-court pressure and traps. I'm recalling back to Villanova in the Bahamas.

There are different ways to be effective with full-court pressure and traps. One effective result is to force TOs. Another effective result is to get your opposition to speed up and lose their offensive identity. Sometimes both results can happen. That is what happened to KSU last night.

One of the keys to beating the pressure is to avoid certain situations. First and foremost, the worst situation is to have the ball trapped either against a sideline or your own baseline or half court line (after passing half court). All of these situations help the effectiveness of the trap by reducing 360 degrees around a player to 180 degrees... half the area around a player is now blocked out. It's like having 4 defensive players surround the ball.

One of KSU's major blunders was their hesitation when a player received the ball. As Coach Self states, "the ball was sticking." The ball stuck with the purple kitties and every time it did it allowed the defense more time to set their traps.

Should we attack out of the pressure? When we beat WVU out of their traps and we have a 2-on-1... do we attack the rim? Do we make them pay for running pressure? It seems like the answer is obvious.. yes... but it doesn't always work out to your advantage. Bob might be a rough-neck country boy, but he's no dummy. The beginning of the game is all about establishing the hard foul. Once he has done that it becomes much harder to make the bunnies. We experienced that with KSU. He did that because knew later that KSU would have plenty of bunny attempts. He wanted KSU to have bunny attempts. That is part of the allure, and part of what helps speed up a team and control the pace of the game as well as preventing them from establishing a set offense. And since Bob has "planted a mental seed" that there will be a health risk to taking the bunnies, he even knocks down the percentage of successful bunnies to a low percentage.

Poise is the key element to beating a Huggin's team. He tests your poise. He is not going to let you keep your normal identity. We better be prepared to be a different team for 40 minutes, because it is going to happen if we like it or now. What we have to do is keep our cool, and pay attention to Self and what he wants. Execute his game plan. In the beginning, we may attack the rim after beating the pressure. If we aren't successful at that we may later decide to just pull out and run offense and try to create our offensive identity in the half court.

We have several advantages over KSU. First... we have a superior coach who realizes many of these aspects that Weber missed. That doesn't mean we will be successful, but we will be successful if our guys follow the plan. We have more poise. Our poise has come from having the toughest schedule in the nation, and stepping up to different challenges along the ways. We have very good ball skills on the perimeter. The one guy I do worry about is Wayne, and this may be a game where he gets little PT. Devonte can really ice this game for us. Having two great ball handlers on the perimeter is the best way to challenge WVU. We also have improved our FT percentages enough to add in more points at the line. KSU would have won that game had they hit their FTs. We also have more depth. We have enough skilled depth to run rotations to keep our guys fresh. KSU was totally wasted half way through the second half. And last, we have a great half court defense. By limiting scoring from WVU we limit the opportunities they have to setup their full court pressure and traps.

I can hardly wait to play Bob this year. I don't see how Bob can win in AFH, but I do see us being totally tested in West Virginia. This is another great experience waiting to happen and we are bound to come away from it a better team, barring injuries.

Bring it, Bob!

A Horn Is A Horn Is A Horn... β€’ Jan 28, 2015 03:41 AM

@Blown

I was amazed that our guys moved their legs more, creating plenty of space so passes weren't stolen. We often blame the passer on a steal, when often part of the blame should go to the guy on the other end, who didn't put enough into creating the space.

SAW a team Saturday β€’ Jan 27, 2015 11:16 PM

@nuleafjhawk

"Why can they play like "THAT" vs playing like deaf, dumb and .....stupid kids against Kentucky and Temple"

They are young and they play as a team. Young kids often have bigger swings in energy and focus. And since they are a team, it seems they mostly play "zapped out" or "all out." And now we know they have the capacity to play all out for 40 minutes straight!

Some teams never reach that... 40 consecutive minutes of an all out slug out. We came prepared for Texas. It was awesome!

"Self" (and team) Assessment β€’ Jan 27, 2015 10:03 PM

@benshawks08

"My hope is that the team take ownership of itself and start truly caring for each other and playing for each other the way that 2008 and especially 2012 team did. I think Jamari is the emotional charge for this team and the rest feed off of him for that. Mason is the stability where we look when things get bad. Graham brings the Joy, Wayne the toughness, Kelly the talent, Cliff the muscle, and Greene the swagger. Perry is the x factor"

Man.. did you nail the identity roles of our guys! Excellent comment.

"I still don't know how to beat UK."

Realize this. There is a good chance that Kentucky only makes modest improvements moving forward. They have all the size and talent, but without being challenged, it is easy for teams like theirs to get overconfident and lazy.

I believe our growth graph has been shooting up higher than Kentucky's and will continue to do so.

Therefore, maybe it becomes more clear how we beat them in another month.

Kentucky has several of their own problems. Their offense is spotty (to say the least).

Our offense can come around a lot and move faster. Quicker passes and plenty of motion. Kentucky can be beat.

"Self" (and team) Assessment β€’ Jan 27, 2015 09:16 PM

"How bright can it be?"

I look at it like this.... I'd rather be us than Kentucky.

I know they have the NBA draft locked up... yada... yada... undefeated season.... yada...

But guess what? We all know winning in March is about peaking at the right time.

If our guys can realize that the game at Texas was just a game along the path, and not the apex of our season, we can still make VAST improvements.

For that reason, I'd rather be us than Kentucky. Kentucky will continue to improve, too.. but their conference is a joke this year. They should easily win out from now to March. They haven't faced the huge beat downs during the year... where they had to dig deep to find themselves (their identity) and go through all the typical growing phases teams go through.

I hope we still drop another game or two in conference... but... obviously... I want to win #11.

If we continue to grow and improve at our current pace all the way through March... who is going to stop us? I'm not seeing another team that can stop us if we continue to keep our improvement growth at the pace it is now. Right now, we are seeing players like Kelly, Perry, Cliff and Brannen stepping it up. Same can be said for others... Devonte, Frank and BamBam. And there are others that still may find a big improvement burst this year... Wayne and Landen.

We just don't know what to expect each game, also in the improvement department. Any of these guys are capable of having those big moments when a light comes on inside and their game jumps up a big leap. We clearly saw that with Kelly and Cliff. Maybe even Svi returns to the fray.

Another aspect is relating to our youth. These guys are still learning the team concept. That flows over heavily on both sides of the ball.

I believe we can be consistent the rest of this year if the guys just realize they have to bring the big energy for every single game and they do whatever it is they need to do to bring it. This is by far the simplest approach to take (moving forward) that guarantees we have an excellent chance of winning every single game we play. Everything else is a technicality.

"Self" (and team) Assessment β€’ Jan 27, 2015 06:47 PM

This is a question for everyone and I hope everyone makes a contribution to this thread.

I may be mistaken, but isn't this Self's youngest team as a Jayhawk, or was it last year's team?

Whatever the case. The performance in Austin may be one of the best performances by a Hawk team in years. Self has already proclaimed the BamBam play as the best he has ever experienced.

I'll preface this by stating that I know we have a long ways to go. I'm not taking anything for granted.

But let's paint a portrait and stand back and judge it.

I'm not saying we go undefeated in league from here on out. However... what if this team decides to buckle down like they did in Austin for the rest of our games? Self will hang #11. And we know this team has plenty of potential upside left.

Moving forward, if this team maintains a level of play similar (or even better) to what we experienced in Texas, is this Self's best coaching job ever as a Jayhawk?

We have the toughest schedule in America this year and we've only dropped 3 games with this super young team.

If we continue the path we are on, and continue to improve, even better than the Texas game.... how good can this team get?

We still lack a big 5... but aren't we in the same boat as a lot of the nation's best teams?

This thread is not about stroking up Self and the team. It's about showing an optimistic "end of the tunnel." Clearly, there is a light on way down there at the end. How bright can it be?

Texas vs ISU β€’ Jan 27, 2015 04:25 PM

Anyone else watch this game?

Pretty amazing spectacle.

Lots of lessons to be learned here, if we didn't learn them at Ames and Austin.

I know I've called the Cyclones a "gimmick team" in a previous post. I have to admit my own personal frustration because the Mayor is the only one in our conference that truly understands x-axis basketball. It definitely isn't a gimmick.... and I officially retract my statement.

I watched this entire game, and even my wife stayed glued to the tube on this one, even when ISU made it look like a blow out and done game in the second half. We both hung in there and felt it was going to tighten up because surely ISU was going to run out of steam. They did, and Texas finally started to even out the play and it turned out to be a close game. Had the game extended another 5 minutes or so, ISU would have been in real trouble.

There are some definite lessons to be taken from this game.

  1. When playing ISU, your focus has to be coming in with enough energy. ISU plays x-axis basketball... which is the art of stretching out a game horizontally instead of vertically. It is the only really effective way for a smaller team to beat a taller team (with similar talent). Man, for most of this game Texas looked realllll slowwwww. Texas definitely lacks foot speed in the post, and I mean positions 3, 4 and 5. But part of them looking slow was the fact that ISU looked very fast.

  2. If ISU wants to challenge for the B12 championship, they have to be able to export their speed on the road. Their guys are light and quick, but what gives them their speed advantage is their attitudes and their game plan to keep in motion. This is a completely mediocre team if they don't play with a speed advantage.

  3. There is a reason why Texas is playing a zone. Many of us in here have wondered why Texas is playing a zone. This exposes their true weakness... slow players at the 3, 4 and 5. They are tall, but they can't play a M2M and not get exposed. Their big guys can't cut sharply and run through screens. Players like Perry Ellis will crucify them in a M2M. He can easily pop out and be wide open on his shot. I know many of us have been on Perry's case for several things... but I'm sure glad we have him now! He is our ultimate weapon against certain situations, like a Texas M2M. It's vital we have his outside threat.

  4. Myles Turner is extremely gifted. He still needs to build his legs and become more agile. He sort of lumbers around with his lower body movement. But the guy can flat out ball in the post and at mid range. I'm sure he will continue to improve from long range, too. He is unstoppable in the post when he receives the ball in the right spot.

  5. Isaiah Taylor is unbelievable. What a talent. But he isn't always geared towards production. He did almost nothing in this game until ISU started to wear down. At the end of the game, Taylor dominated and was the real reason Texas came back. Taylor also prevented Texas from getting blown out by Kansas in our game, as he kept them scoring baskets by himself.

I hope Self watched this game and studied it. There are all the answers we need to guarantee victories on both of these teams in AFH.

ISU:

There are two key factors involved in beating ISU. Energy (speed) and endurance. Kansas has a gigantic advantage here, especially in AFH because it should be easier for us to maintain high energy and harder for ISU. But even if they bring the same intensity as they bring in Hilton, we should beat them at their own game. Remember not too long ago... when we played an amped-up OSU in AFH? Remember the physical beat down Phil Forte took in that game? Here is a guy who prides himself on being the best conditioned athlete in the B12. We brought enough energy and played enough of a rotation to beat down the Cowboys. We had 8 guys get major minutes in that game. If we bring big energy and rotate enough guys, how can ISU bring enough energy to trump us? They needed their 21 easy run out points to beat us in Ames. Surely, they aren't going to do that to us now in AFH. Scheduling benefits us. Both teams play a 1pm Saturday game before our Monday meeting meaning that both teams will have to consider the fatigue two days later, except ISU has to travel to Kansas, and our Saturday game is also at home. Guys rest better at home. The biggest advantage is our depth. We have more guys we can go to for quality minutes.

Texas:

Texas will have to completely step up their game to really challenge us in AFH. Typically, we play with more energy at home than away, and Texas looked slow against us in Austin. Barnes is in trouble with the Texas defense. Teams are figuring out their Achilles heel with slow foot speed at the 3, 4 and 5. Their M2M is easy to shred and Self already knows how to attack the gaps on their zone. So what can Rick do to change his team between now and the end of February? That may be another month away, but he has a tough task ahead. Will his big guys have more foot speed by then? Doubtful. There is a good chance they will have already dropped a couple more games by then and their hopes will be completely shattered. You can see the frustration on this team, especially with star Turner.

Their salvation player is Taylor. That guy is a real stud and may be the best player in our league. We can really snip away all hope for Texas if we play them right in AFH. We need to control when and where he gets the ball. Lots of ball denial defense in the areas of the floor where he is most dangerous.... around the FT line and on the right side, where he likes to drive. His tendencies are clearly to the right, including on his first step, so hedge right.

Previously, I felt good about our chances in AFH against both of these teams if for no other reason than playing in AFH. I feel even more confident after watching this game. Neither team has much of a chance at coming at us in a different way then they already have. We already beat Texas on their court and now we have the home court advantage and have experienced them before. We have more scoring weapons and we can come at a team with most of our guys stepping up for a dominant game. Texas has lots of talent that will continue to improve, but their bigs will still have slow footwork a month from now.

ISU is about offense, and they have lots of ways to attack us to score points... open court, motion offense, isolations.... but in a key area they remain a one-trick pony; they must play with a lot more energy than their opponents to be effective. We don't need a heavy strategy to beat ISU, we just need to come ready to run with big energy. That means we get back on defense. That means we play a sticky M2M. That means we run a lot of motion through our offense which will spread the small ISU defense thin so we can either punch it low or hit 3s.

"You'd drink too if you realized you just left KU for Wichita State !"

On top of that... there is no guarantee he'll actually bank more PT minutes there either.

He's not going to unseat VanVleet or Baker. He'll still be waiting his turn, and they have a bunch of young players working in some minutes he'll have to beat out, too.

If I had to give him advice I'd tell him to look at his current life and except where he is as a low point and make a plan to lift himself to a better place.

Sometimes Your Real Opponent Is the Schedule β€’ Jan 26, 2015 10:24 PM

@justanotherfan

"That's 3 games in six days where the opponent will be playing with their season goals hanging in the balance. That's a tough row to hoe."

Right on!

I think that explains our entire B12 season. Everyone has circled their dates with Kansas because we've been on top for a decade.

All of these schools know the fans will pack the house to see the KU game. A bad showing can't be swept under the rug of their fan bases and these teams know that if they don't come read then Kansas will truly embarrass them on their home court.

Our team surely has the toughest schedule in the country.... hands down!

First, we chose the toughest pre-conf schedule... then we go into the top or one of the top conferences with a decade win streak on the line. No one comes close to playing as many tough games as we have, especially when noting the target on our back for every single conference game!

Now will it help us in March? That remains to be seen.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY HORNED FROGS β€’ Jan 26, 2015 10:10 PM

"Remember this? TCU Beats KU."

Self better be reminding them of that. Do we have any current Hawks that were there? Anyone to 'share the joyful memory' with the rest of the team?

Talk about storming the court.... whoa!

"They have still used buses for ISU, K-State OU and OSU. "

That is an experience these guys really need to have. Very important for bonding and communication.

When I was a kid I met Hank Stram. He shook my hand and pulled out of it shaking his hand in the air, complaining about my hard grip. He knew how to relate to kids well and actually made me think I had a tight squeeze. Great intense coach with tons of personality and showmanship. And I'll never forget 1969.

I don't give into that one often because they are kids and should be full of energy.

I remember being out in a small town as a kid and riding my bike 50 miles to eat pizza, then remembering I had to bike home! I did it, then had to help my grandpa on the farm the next morning at 5am.

These kids are tough!

@ralster

"Why would KU be "flat","

The good aspect of this team is they are really a team.

But the bad part is they mostly come out playing the same (because they are a team and rely on synergies)... so if we get off to a cold start it is most of the team being cold.

Maybe that explains our lopsided losses. We win a bunch of tough games, but when we lose, we lose big!

"Why the hell did Barnes play a zone. M2m would have caused this team more trouble wouldn't it?"

Because he is Rick Barnes.

I thought we'd see M2M, too... but read earlier in the week that his focus is on the zone. I hadn't seen much Longhorn ball prior to our game.

He should know Self is all about fast passes and attacking seams. We usually do well against zone ds. Barnes couldn't really affect the pressure applied with that zone, so he made it really easy for us down the stretch when they extended backcourt pressure because they could never really set their defense. Then we had them extended. We crushed them at the end.

I like how Self attacked the zone with Perry down on the baseline and Cliff or BamBam cutting in around the FT line. That worked really well because we could load a side and attack from the baseline or high post area.

I thought Texas has the ponies this year to run with us?!

It sounds like he had too much family involvement. People pushing on him. Because it seemed like he rushed to leave when he should have shown patience. He had a tight bond with his teammates, so maybe someone in his family applied pressure or he was trying to please them. He's a great guy and solid player. I wish the best for him.

"With all that in mind, understand that I pull for ISU to succeed. "

I do, too, as long as we aren't playing. I support all the B12 teams in post play. And you said it right that what is good for our conference is good for Kansas.

Typically... I don't look at a few performances in March and judge a team (or coach) on that (including Kansas). As many have said, March is a crap shoot. But over a period of time and looking at the overall performance of a conference in March, one can definitely make some judgments.

Here is a link that says it all:

NCAA Wins by Conference β†—

This clearly shows the ACC dominance.

I'd like to see the B12 with Kansas numbers removed from the totals. I know we represent the only NC, and at least 3 of the FFs.

Tubby and Tech give KU the Big 12 β€’ Jan 26, 2015 04:08 AM

Self is a great coach! He's a college coach, not a pro coach. The skill set is completely different in college coaching than pro coaching.

College coaching is more about the discipline of focusing on just a few areas of the game. Teaching some philosophical aspects, too. The players are young, and coaches only have a short time to get these young players playing team ball. So many aspects of the game are cut out because coaches want their teams to master just certain areas. #1 is playing team basketball.

Pro coaching is more about finding whatever way it takes to win. A lot more goes into exploiting other teams based on match-ups. Seasons and practices almost consume the entire year. Many of the players have been around for a decade or so. They already bring a certain level of play with them (or learn it quickly). So the focus can go wider and it does... often to tweaks upon tweaks, especially tailored specifically for each team.

The great ones, like Jordan, often commented about how relieved they were to make it to the pros... when the shackles came off their games and they were set free to dominate. Wigs is one of those guys. He isn't restricted by Self's system anymore. He's been set free. And like Jordan, he will rule the game, in his own way.

But we shouldn't take that as a strike against Self. Self has to succeed in his world of limitations. He is doing something right... just look at his record. And if you want to criticize him for this, then also criticize Dean Smith for holding Jordan back. It was the same situation then.

It helps us all to understand these things... because Self and Wiggins are bound to be permanently enshrined in their appropriate HOFs. And we are fortunate to have experienced their paths crossing.

Tubby and Tech give KU the Big 12 β€’ Jan 26, 2015 03:57 AM

@KansasComet

"We love Wiggins. "

Right on! But I would hope when we sign the next Wigs Self has learned to make a better situation out of it. He formed guys around him but we needed to be a team. There wasn't even responsibility on this team. The focus was all on Wigs and JoJo... then JoJo was out and it was all on Wigs. The other guys went soft. I never want to have those same team dynamics, and if we can't become a real team with the super duper star, I'm afraid we should pass on the next one. The most important aspect is team ball. It's a team sport and you can't win without a team concept. We really didn't have a team concept. It wasn't Wigs fault at all. I thought he did a lot to help bridge the gap. Maybe he avoided some contact to keep the franchise body intact. Okay... but he still put energy into being a teammate. The coaches really demanded that he be an "alpha dog" and that became translated as being a bull hog and not looking for the assist.

Wigs was pushing his drives so hard he usually couldn't even maintain his dribble or the handle on the ball. The last thing he could do was feed the assist in that situation. He was strung way way way too tight!

Does everyone think he suddenly developed dribbling and handling skills now in the league? Ha... He is playing much better because he is with handlers that know how to maximize his talent. Even though he is "the man" for his team, they have helped him get his mind right and they have relieved the stress on him finishing at the hole. Suddenly he is free to just finish, whether it is at the rim or with a pull up. Just that one tweak has suddenly given him much better handles!

I think Wigs will remember KU as a positive year in his life, and he will always be a great Jayhawk! He's an outstanding young man that is on the right track. I just wish we would have better capitalized on his one year by not trying to force him into either hitting 3s or taking it all the way to the rack. Yes... he made it to the FT line often. But we didn't maximize our return and neither did he.

This is just my humble opinion and I understand that many won't see it the same way.

A Horn Is A Horn Is A Horn... β€’ Jan 26, 2015 03:42 AM

@icthawkfan316

ISU is truly built with over-achievers. We all need to appreciate the talent of the Mayor.

But I don't see a lot of upside left in that team. They are running full bore now. When looking mid-season at teams and how to rank, part of it should be on potential upside. Their bench is thin, and they lack size. They need more "go to" players. Their pre-conf schedule was soft. I definitely thought they were a great team last year and if they hadn't lost Niang in March, they were bound for a better showing. I see them this year and just say a "good team."

Texas has upside. They've played a tougher schedule, too. I see the potential there... even though I can't compare Barnes with the Mayor. But I think Texas will become a very tough out within the next 30 days. They haven't really figured out how to use Myles. I've been surprised at how good a back-to-the-basket game he has already. I was just expecting him to stay unbruised and play the perimeter. Seeing the weight he put on and how he can post, we did lose out on him.

I do think we have a great conference. The top 8 teams are solid, and the bottom 2 teams you better not fall asleep on. But I'm like everyone else who is outside the B12... wondering if any of these teams will make it to the FF. Or how about Elite 8? Anyone besides Kansas?

Kansas is proven. But who else in our league is proven? No one. Name a team besides Kansas that has a big background in March recently?

I don't want to be Negative Nancy here... I'm really thrilled with the quality of the B12 this year. We've made positive strides and our league is moving up. But we still need to have someone besides Kansas make it to the FF again. Until that happens, we will be under-appreciated by the rest of the world, and rightly so. It's time we prove ourselves!

Texas needs to step up and at least make it to the Sweet 16 this year, and preferably to the Elite 8. OU is a streaky team and they could get hot in March. I can't honestly say I know squat about WVU yet because we haven't played and I don't spend my spare time watching Huggins. He's a decent coach, but he sickens me with his personality, especially as been the most-foul mouthed coach in college basketball. I appreciate real "man ball" but haven't always appreciated some of his tactics of rough housing. He's always kind of creeped me out!

Sorry, but I just don't see ISU doing much later, mostly because I think they lack bench. If they lose Niang they are toast, and if they lose any of their starters they will be hurting, big time.

"But...do you think Wiggins was the reason we lost the Stanford game? I certainly do not."

No..... I put more emphasis on the way our team used Wigs as a crutch. We escaped from being a team and having Wigs on the team enabled the other guys to loaf. We were never a team... nothing like the feel for our current group, which definitely has team energy. All our current guys feel they are personally responsible for winning and losing.

Wigs did his best for the situation. He wasn't going to beat Stanford single-handed.

Thanks for clarifying!

"What's good for the conference is good for KU."

Amen to that!

I think the B12 should be questioned. I haven't agreed with all the recent hype. I think it is setting us up again for another big March disappointment. For example, I think ISU is over-rated. Their pre-conference schedule was laughable. The only real competition they played was Maryland, and they lost in KC (which was almost a home game). Their RPI has now shot down to 20. 20? Seriously? The barely win against some tough conference teams at home, and that is enough to give them an RPI of 20 (after the TT beat down)?

I agree that we need our conference to show well. But we need to show results when it counts, in March. If ISU is going to fade out early in March, then all the hype now hurts our conference. It's that way for all of us teams in the B12, including Kansas.

It is one thing for one team to have a bad game early in March and go home early... but if we put 6 teams in the tourney, someone better go high!

@JayHawkFanToo

I thought we just didn't come ready to play Stanford. We didn't bring the energy.

Had we brought the energy we brought yesterday, we would have shown more movement and we would have been able to open up Stanford's defense. And we can shoot over height if we play with speed (energy) because little guys can always create scoring space if there is enough floor space.

Lack of energy pretty much sinks us in probably ALL of our losses. It ends up reducing our scoring space. Crisp passing is not enough to open up scoring space. It takes crisp passes and fast legwork. Self often talks about the ball sticking.... but is it the ball or our guys just not hustling with their feet?

There isn't a defense played where space can't be achieved. In zones, it is attacking the gaps and help create bigger gaps. In M2M it usually requires properly run screens.

This is a question for @Jesse-Newell :

Is there a tool that can take the video screen of a game and plot the motion of the offense? I bet if there is a way to do this, we can quickly discover that our floor speed relates to wins and losses.

We often clam up at tournament time. Most of the time we lose, you can already tell we might lose in the first few minutes because out guys look slow.

We looked fast yesterday! This has nothing to do with a team playing "sped up"... that is a term for a team mentally speeding up and rushing their offense.

It was fun listening to the tv commentators trying to build the hype that "maybe this is the year the Hawks are put on notice!"

Hahahahaha.... then we took a close game and really made it a beat down at the end. When Texas disparately needed to stop us on D, we just ran right through them with ease. Their full court pressure was like cutting butter!

Fun to hear the commentators turn it back to Kansas being THE Big 12!

We can't celebrate now. We have to continue to improve. This game could end up being our biggest setback. If the guys get big heads now, then they stop their development. They've been scratching away at improvements. It has been great to see Kelly and Cliff picking up speed, but we have to be realistic. They are freshmen. Can they bring game every time out? What about March, when the big lights come on?

We still have a long ways to go... not only in this season, but within the development of this team.

We still need everyone to make gains.... and some still lag a bit. Wayne needs to bring more.... Kelly needs to prove he can dominate on the road... Cliff needs to put up big games continuously... same with Perry. Really everyone needs to stay buckled down to improving.

A Horn Is A Horn Is A Horn... β€’ Jan 25, 2015 07:02 PM

@benshawks08

Perry did a better job using fakes... and also showing more quickness. One of his previous issues was he would pause after gaining possession before making his move. This always helps set the defense and puts a huge disadvantage to the offense. I thought Perry looked more fluid, and had a quick first step because the pause was gone.

Credit to Perry... He seemed to remove the mental barrier that was slowing him down! I hope he can continue doing that and maybe help Wayne reduce his thinking too much.

I've gotten on this team for not using shot fakes. But if they increase their foot speed, they should need very few shot fakes. Shot fakes are often a tool used to bail players out of a situation. For the most part, guys ought to be able to create enough scoring space to flow through their shots. We did that on Saturday. Finally... we were the team that looked faster!

Right now I'm thinking of one of our end of game plays where Frank took it right to Ridley, and he had a very simple time scoring on him because he had plenty of floor space and speed to zip right by Ridley in the paint! No shot fake needed! I was screaming with joy out of my seat when he did that!

This team is learning and improving!

@icthawkfan316

"Tech is not an NCAA team, so that game only served to hurt the Big 12's overall profile."

Not sure I understand your rationale. Seems contradictory.

You approve of TCU bringing their best game to us, but disapprove TTU bringing their best game against ISU? I think it hurts our league reputation more to have a bunch of highly-rated teams drop goose eggs in March. If we keep doing that as a league, no one will believe in us anymore. ISU should make improvements after this loss.

I think every team gets up to play us... and if they don't, they are in real trouble. I'm guessing here... but I bet every one of our B12 opponents has their best fan turnout for our game with them.

Most teams in our conference help us. We didn't win 10 in a row strictly by our play. Many times we've had help. I know the purple kitties have helped us many years. It seems that everyone just focuses on beating us, while they blow the games they really need to win. ISU really reduced their chances on Saturday. They were able to get up and beat us (of course with the help of their wild fans), and then had a come down at TT. They really didn't look like the same team.

We need to focus on every game in this league.... and that definitely means the games we are supposed to win. We are supposed to beat the horny frogs. Beating them is just as important as beating Texas. They both count as a "W" or a "L." I kind of recall us dropping one to TCU not too long ago...

@REHawk

"Man, if this Oubre kid does not become lock-in lottery, I hope he stays another year."

Me, too. I'm hoping we don't completely stomp the rest of the B12 so we can hang back out of the Top 5. Being in that top tier media window brings too much attention to our players, and with attention comes increased expectations in the draft.

Hip flexor?

Did anyone tell BamBam to play cautious?

Guess not!

BamBam may not be our most-talented player... but he is one of our only players that has his role figured out.... bring hustle!

There will always be PT available for a guy like BamBam as long as he brings effort.

That's a piece of film they need to show in the film room before every single game.

It's time to edit the pregame film at AFH and stick this in.

Thanks, BamBam... for sticking to your identity and I hope your identity continues to rub off on our entire team!

Tubby and Tech give KU the Big 12 β€’ Jan 25, 2015 06:35 PM

I still believe ISU is over-rated.

I tip my hat to the Mayor though. He gets every ounce of delivery out of the players he has... but this is NOT the quality of team they had last year, or even close. They have to count a lot more on Niang this year, and he looks just a bit slower after his injury.

The Mayor really is a fabulous coach. I'd take him in a second. Imagine what he could do if he was bringing in top tier talent? The guy knows how to execute a plan with the talent pool of a mid-major. If he can ever recruit near our level... we are truly in trouble.

That is my bittersweet assessment of the Cyclones. Very fun team to watch, and a team capable of beating anyone... but they were exposed at TT. And praise to the players they do have.

In some odd ways, they remind me of Wichita State. They take from the same talent pool and play to their potential.

A Horn Is A Horn Is A Horn... β€’ Jan 25, 2015 06:14 PM

Okay... let's get this over with...

Kansas easily played the best 40 minutes of basketball it has played all year. 3 TOs? Are you kidding me? On the road at Texas?

Hats off to Bill Self and his tough team for really coming ready this time. You won't hear me say that very often.

Kansas played "National Championship quality" basketball for pretty much 40 minutes.

I'm not going to blast them for not using shot fakes (but they still should be added) or nag on certain players for not building their stat line in this one.

The fact is: when Kansas comes ready and brings 40 minutes of hustle, they are just about impossible to beat... any place... any time.

That performance was the type of performance where Kansas can challenge Kentucky.

Alright... enough of the stroking. It's time to get back to work.

If our guys want to really appreciate what they did in Austin, they will carry that torch from here on out to the rest of their games. No more let ups.

We can hand this win right back to the loss bracket if we are still stroking ourselves on Wednesday.

You want to talk about a "trap game?" From here on out, every game is a trap game. We can't take anyone for granted. For all that effort and focus and stellar play we had yesterday... it means nothing if we turn right around and hand over losses to teams like the Horned Frogs.

Horned Frogs... Longhorns? They are all Horns my friends. TCU just gave away a game against WVU at WVU, a place that is very tough to win. Their record might stink, but that has just made them hungry and focused to get out of the "L" bracket, and what better game to do it in is against our stroked-up Jayhawks.

Even the worse team in the nation is capable of having a great performance. Good teams are teams that know how to CONSISTENTLY bring quality ball. CONSISTENTLY bring hustle for 40 minutes and game after game.

Now we know a bit of what this team is capable of... but there is still room for improvement, and we still have to improve between today and March if we want to be a tournament-capable team. Now we set the bar higher. We know we can play with anyone anyplace. Now we have to go DO IT every single game!

The Oklahoma game was the perfect lesson of what we CAN do in the first half, and how much we CAN BLOW in the second half. We are very, very capable of bringing the wrong team to Fort Worth.

Look what Tubby and his Red Raiders did to ISU... the same team that seemed to cruise right past use a week ago.

This will really hurt if we soften up now. We've had our first real taste of quality basketball this year with a team reaching the expectations of everyone. A light has come on exposing a path way to a possible National Championship with a very young team. The question is... can these young guys mature enough to MAINTAIN this level of play (and even continue to IMPROVE throughout the rest of the season)?

Great game, guys! Okay.... back to work! Prove your identity throughout a season because you can't do it with one performance.

Fried frog legs anyone?

Tubby and Tech give KU the Big 12 β€’ Jan 25, 2015 12:58 AM

I've said all along... Kansas wins the Big 12 because no other team knows how.

All we have to do (moving forward) is win the games we are supposed to win (home games and TCU, TT away) and one more that we aren't supposed to win, like the purple kitties, one of the oklahomas or WVU away.

The rest of our league will implode.

ISU is completely over-rated. They rely on gimmicks for victories... like run outs. Their defense is marginal, they lack rebounding and size... and they lack bench. I still can't believe we lost to those clowns.

But, like others have said... there is a lot of basketball yet to be played. If we beat Texas at home they will prove to be our biggest ally moving forward because they should improve substantially over the next month and I'm sure they will win some good games against some of our other foes.

Myles.... I'm not going to tell you "I told you so" but... the rest of it will prove out in March. "you should have chosen..."

Pot is one of the few substances that lacks toxic properties, hence, it is impossible to use it and reach a toxic level causing death. That doesn't mean people will be responsible on pot and not get behind the wheel or stroll off a cliff. It's a safer substance than alcohol.

Good article on Perry β€’ Jan 24, 2015 06:05 PM

@icthawkfan316

Perry is an awesome human being! And his parents are great role models.

I'd still like to see Perry lose it. Whatever it takes for him to become a true alpha dog. If he used to have it, then it is there... the animal is inside and needs to come out! Unleash it, Perry!

We've all seen Self lose it and it helps the team when he bashes scoreboards and gets T'd. Imagine what it would do for this team if they experienced Perry lose it? No one expects it so the impact is much higher.

I'd like to see Perry get cheap-shotted by Ridley and come up swinging. The ejection would get our guys pumping... and when we get pumped, we crush teams!

Our first-half smackdown of OU was about energy... with the energy our guys got open and had the confidence to shoot to their capabilities. That energy came from Sunday when the guys went to "church" and were preached to by Rev. Self for a couple of hours instead of practicing in the gym.

If our guys have the big energy we CRUSH Texas! We did it last year in AFH after being humiliated in Austin. It's a game about ENERGY!

@HighEliteMajor

""I think we need to challenge them, but we don’t need to fade away from contact."

Self is right... but this is just a generalization. It's HOW we challenge them. And in that area, so far this year we are failing horribly at doing this. I believe we have the worst shooting 2-pt Jayhawk team in Self's era, and we are one of the worst teams in the country at getting our 2-pt shots blocked... and we are not nearly as small as all those teams at the bottom.

I'm pretty sure we'd win our conference and go fairly far in March if we stop everything we are practicing on now and just teach this team what a shot fake is. That will do it! It's an art form, just like being the magician that knows how to steal passes.

No one is expecting us to use shot fakes. We'd catch the entire nation with their pants down if we suddenly knew how to use them and used them. Texas is going to be pumped up today to beat us. They know we get more shots blocked than any other team in our conference and one of the worst teams in the country. They will be extended for every shot attempt (to block) without worry of fouling. They are PRIMED to get sucked into shot fakes and foul! And we all know Barnes.... it will take him a year or two to realize what strategy beat him!

Please guys.... SHOT FAKES! Practice them, learn the art, and USE them!

Self's Recruiting Strategy For One Thon Maker β€’ Jan 24, 2015 05:30 PM

@joeloveshawks @BeddieKU23

Even though Thon could definitely use some pounds of muscle and learn back to the basket ball... I don't think it is realistic to see him focus on that in just one or two years of college basketball. It's not where his skill set is, and is unlikely to ever be a great post player at the next level. It took years to convert Withey, and Thon is every bit the challenge. Thon has no desire to be the next Withey project.

His gift is his footwork, ball handling and perimeter shooting.

We have to throw away his dimensions, and consider him a 6'7" guy and let him be where his skills are. If we recruit him any other way I'm positive it is going to backfire. Thon doesn't want to be a low post player, nor should he want to be.

Imagine how well this guy can learn to pass the ball. At his height, he sees a different game. He's lightning fast and should eventually become a big assist maker in college and the NBA.

@jaybate-1.0

"pump fake for @drgnslayr,"

Is Cliff out of the Big Red Dog House? β€’ Jan 23, 2015 04:25 PM

I've been amazed at the media concerning Cliff.

The media jumped all over Kelly's rough early time as a Jayhawk. And now it seems all media pretext's their description of Kelly as "a guy who didn't get it when coming to Lawrence, but does now!"

What about Cliff?

I kind of recall that during recruitment Cliff was compared to Jahlil? I was expecting the media to be a constant thorn in Cliff's side... but they have forgotten about Cliff. Usually the media loves to jump on any negative surrounding a Kansas player.

I wonder if it would be helping Cliff more to have the media on his back? Or is it better that they leave him alone so he can avoid the chaos while he works on his game?

Anyone have an opinion on this?

@Kubie

I think Svi will be making a big impact next year. But I see him as being smarter and sticking it out longer in college. I don't think he'll dive for the fast bucks and prefers to work on his game more. Self sides with players going early if they can be 1st round picks and I think most players buy into that strategy, too. It will take a lot to get Svi's game up to that level in one more year. I think he is more the 3 or 4 year guy, depending on not only how well he performs, but what the media does with it.

On the other hand... I see someone like a Coach Pop telling Svi to go early (and unnoticed) because he wants to steal him as a late draft pick. Svi has "San Antonio" written all over him! Imagine him with Ginobili? Freakish... I hope he is Svi's idol.

@jaybate-1.0

I think some of our guys over-think. But here is the deal... I don't want to give any of these guys a crutch to stand on. Basketball is a competitive sport and should be based on players' desires. There are guys who play through a lot worse stuff than our guys have to deal with (I'm thinking TRob and his loss).

Injuries plague all players. They will never be much if they can't learn to play through most injuries. That is an area of sports that should be discussed more. The guys with the most desire lift their threshold for pain tolerance and often turn a hampering injury into a positive by playing through the pain and having added adrenaline. I'll never forget seeing Isiah Thomas' ankle swollen to the size of a large grapefruit and he went for what... 25 points in that quarter of the playoffs!

Playing through pain is something all athletes have to deal with and there aren't many (or any) top athletes that fold up easily. We should be looking closer at these guys (beyond concussions) to see when they are making too big of risks for the moment. Self often brings guys back too soon.... and all of us frown at that, but Self is a tough hombre and he understands the dynamics involved. Players often make gigantic performance leaps after they conquer their "pain fears." They pick up tons of confidence in themselves, for pushing through a tough situation and making hay. So it turns out that playing through some pains can bring gigantic rewards.... but without question, the risks need to be studied closely!
