Bragg Bad? Numbers Say Not So Fast • Jan 05, 2017 03:52 PM

An advantage that I see when playing small is the ability to put the opponents post into foul trouble. Quicker players can really put pressure on the post. As @Crimsonorblue22 pointed out Withey was pulled against smaller quicker post players because he became ineffective. KU needs to put that same pressure on teams to be successful with this lineup.

@JayHawkFanToo I can hit a half court shot sitting in a chair. I saw Rod Stewart making threes from the bench while his leg was in a cast. Half court shots prove nothing, but that he likes to screw around instead of practicing a real skill or pushing his teammates to get better.

Self needs to light a fire under Devonte. He can't make a layup or defend. That guy is playing terrrible and will cost KU games if he doesn't play closer to his potiental. Hell I'd love last years Devonte. If he's not injured he's tanking for another reason, girl, family, school, maybe Maxwell was his buddy. I don't know what's wrong, but Devonte needs to fix it pronto!

The Only Way To Travel... • Jan 05, 2017 03:44 AM

I feel like we all got robbed of a good game by the refs. No defense because everything was a foul, except actual fouls.

@Kcmatt7 Did his dad only play one season for KU? Add him to the transfer list! Pretty rare back then, comparatively speaking.

Raiders v. Broncos • Jan 03, 2017 05:05 PM

Andy Reid said the Chiefs would have all 53 players available for their opening playoff game. That includes LB Justin Houston and RB Spencer Ware, who didn't play last week against the Chargers because of injuries.

@Kcmatt7 He's new at the Head coaching gig. I think if given time he will be good. He just needs to get and trust good assistant coaches. We shall see.

Lane Kiffin • Jan 03, 2017 04:17 PM

@Kcmatt7 Yeah, he's the biggest winner I know of.

Like him as a coach from afar, just don't care for him as a person. Hope Beaty can win without being a weiner too.

Speaking of trees, wouldn't it have been nice to have Lauri Markkanen right about now??? Unfortunately this legacy fell completely under the radar and went unrecruited by Kansas (as far as I know).

I couldn't find the recruiting thread. Is there a new one going? It's hard to care as much with actual basketball going on.

@drgnslayr Yeah, I was too silly to schedule classes on the same end of campus. 15 minutes to run across campus isn't very much with all those stairs! You could always tell what class the students were by the size of their calf muscles!

Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger, Bill Self, and Diallo were less than pleased with the NCAA’s mishandling of the situation.

On November 10th, Zenger sent a six page letter to Oliver Luck, Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for the NCAA.

This letter, in which Mark Emmert, Gary DeCastro, Todd Leydon, Mike Massa, Bob Bowlsby, Bernadette Gray Little, Sean Lester, David Reed, Bill Self, and Geoff Silver were listed under “cc:”, detailed the extent of NCAA’s ineptitudes.

“I am concerned also because the role NCAA staff has played during this misfit process has been that of investigator, not collaborator,” Zenger said in the letter.

“There is still no closure for Cheick Diallo. It is the University of Kansas communicating openly and uncovering facts that we could have discovered together all in the spirit of reaching conclusions and closure for Cheick.”

Later that month on a Saturday, Self decided to air his grievances as well in a conference call with ESPN and CBS Sports.

“We still haven’t been told anything definitively in any area,” Self said.

“We’ve made six visits to Our Savior, and the NCAA has made zero.”

“Our Savior was placed on review by the NCAA after Cheick arrived. He had no idea when he got there. The policy sucks in that kids aren’t notified.”

“This kid left his family in Mali to live out a dream, and he was never made aware of anything. This is a situation where he should be playing immediately.

“We gave it to the NCAA, and we know it’s a weekend. I think the weekend qualifies as a workday in this case.”

Finally, on November 25th, the NCAA finally made a ruling.

“Based on the amateurism review, the NCAA concluded that Diallo received a limited amount of extra benefits,” said in a statement by Stacey Osburn, NCAA Director of Public and Media Relations.

“Therefore, Diallo is not eligible to play for five contests, including the four games Kansas has already played.”

It appeared Zenger was glad the situation reached a conclusion without major penalties.

Zenger said in response to the ruling, “I really want to thank the NCAA staff for guiding this process to a fair conclusion in what was a very complicated situation.”

@jaybate-1.0 Do you remember how slow Sash Kaun looked on the court? A lumbering giant. Then I saw him at the barnstorming event playing local hs "studs". He was faster than the guards and only took 8 steps or so to traverse the court! It really gave me a new appreciation for the speed KU plays at.

Raiders v. Broncos • Jan 03, 2017 03:03 PM

@ralster @Crimsonorblue22 What's wrong with Berry?

Sounds like Houston will play its just a matter of how knicked up he is after four weeks of rest.

Virginia Tech - legit top 10 in BASKETBALL • Jan 03, 2017 03:01 PM

Back on topic. Virginia Tech is waaay better than I expected. Let's see if they can keep it up for the whole ACC slate.

Virginia Tech - legit top 10 in BASKETBALL • Jan 03, 2017 02:53 PM

@mayjay My friend with a law degree from Harvard didn't seem to have problems getting work. Could've been the 4.0 though. Or choice in field, corporate law, mostly in Europe.

My take, the top 1 or 2 programs seperate themselves from the rest. The bulk of the schools get local preference. How many firms in KC have KU grads for lawyers? 90%? But as it is with any job, work experience is key. I.e. Martin of Martin|Pringle is a fantastic adoption lawyer and will make the adoption happen (if he deems you worthy, lawyers are a judgemental lot with the law in their hands...)

Aerospace engineering? MIT or KU. The MIT name caries more weight, but KU was ranked #1 in the late 90s. Go KU!

Journalism both KU and KSU are top 5, but if you aren't born with the God given talent to write it doesn't matter what you're taught.

And so on and so forth.

I don't use anything near my area of study at work. Bus. Admin vs crop consultant. I guess I will be running my own business soon, but the accounting courses are hardly helpful in my life/work.

My sister holds an animal husbandry degree from KSU and manages a bank in KC. The degree just opens a door. Outside of specialist like Doctors or Lawyer or engineers, I don't see a whole lot of advantage to a degree. The big advantage is becoming a well rounded individual if you have a communications degree or liberal arts or art history etc. These degrees aren't gonna make you a dime.

Is that the TCU point guard? Lol

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 02:54 PM

Think back to how awesome Buddy Hield was. Now realize he is averaging 8 pts/game. Devonte isn't as good of a shooter, and is also marginally athletic (for the NBA). While I wish him a long successful career I think it will have a top end similar Chalmers. And Devonte is no where near the defender that Mario was.

At the end of last year I thought his Jr. Season would be his last, but he's deferring too much. He couldn't even make a layup vs TCU, his shot hasn't gotten hot yet in any game.

If Devonte wants to go pro after this season he can and he may get drafted, but he'll probably end up next to Selden unless he makes a marked improvement across the board. I say this and Devonte is my favorite player on the team. I want him to succeed. The D-league is not success it's merely getting by. I love his energy and attitude. I hope to see him succeed! If he goes pro then most likely KU won it all and its time for a full reload.

Crazy Start • Jan 02, 2017 05:52 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Is Graham going to transfer? He isn't going pro the way he's playing so far. If that's his intent he'd better kick it up a few notches from last year; he hasn't even reached So. Graham level yet. Grahams next couple of gears are a major part of why I have NC hopes.

Raiders v. Broncos • Jan 01, 2017 10:04 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Denver up 7 on Oakland early

Crazy Start • Jan 01, 2017 10:02 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Don't forget Newman and Garrett. Garrett may be better than expected. I'd love to get an impact point to replace Mason -i.e. Duval or a transfer (Thornton would've been nice).

The problem is there aren't many unsigned players in the top 150 and good luck finding a player ranked 150+! It's about gotta be a Juco guy or a transfer at this point to fill the roster. Perhaps a post-grad guy who isn't ranked? @Statmachine got any ideas?

@jayballer54 TJ was in a few of my classes. Funny guy.

@JayHawkFanToo As I recall Giddens felt/was forced out. But he was selfish on the court and I figure it transfers off the court, never met the man, but I don't recall a lot of hurt feelings when he left.

Crazy Start • Jan 01, 2017 05:51 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 KU needs another impact guard/wing and a 2-4 year guard and post. At the very least.

I'd like Duval and Young/Walker/Diallo + a post (Bowen, Bamba-not likely)

How about Darien Jackson as a developmental guard?

Caliendo doing Morgan Freeman breaking down the AFC.

Giddens was such a jerk he managed to get stabbed in Lawrence, where basketball players are Gods. Where goofy acting and looking Bragg can get justice in 5 days and a new girlfriend in minutes.

Giddens was talented, but troubled as was Giles. Both talented players transfered and that's why they are on the list near the top. @JayHawkFanToo I flipped 'em for you.

Did Moulaye Niang transfer too? Or just quit? I know there are others, but if they don't hit the floor they're hard to remember.

@drgnslayr More of a retort to @stoptheflop than a factual statement, however, Vick has been better than anyone but @KUSTEVE expected. I kinda hoped it would spur conversation in a positive light.

Crazy Start • Jan 01, 2017 04:10 PM

Lucas getting healthy mentally and physically is huge!

Red shirts count against the scholarship limit, so Maxwell was using one. There are many open spots for next season. Bragg can have Maxwells scholly- I know many had written him off as gone earlier...

Without Vick we lose or how about if Devonte or Jackson show up and its a laugher? I don't believe Dixon took two of KU's best three players out with scheming. TCU played near it's ceiling, I thought they looked good most of the night, but KU looked poor and won...sucks to be TCU.

Not many kids who transfer from KU are really all that good any way.

JR Giddens

CJ Giles

Andrew White III

Micah Downs

CJ Henry - transfer or quit?

Alaphabet kids like to leave!

Then waaaaaay down on the incomplete list

.

.

.

.

.

Milton Doyle

Evan Maxwell

Hope it works out well for Evan, but this is the last time I'll likely be able to remember his name before he slips into the deep dark recesses of my memory. Never to be recalled again. Too bad as I have fond memories of even the walk-ons at KU.

Maxwell is transferring.

KU away at Lizard Lair Game Thread • Dec 31, 2016 04:04 PM

The Frosh looked like one last night, but what's wrong with DeVonte'? He was absolutely horrible. Couldn't make a layup, couldn't cut off the dribble half the time, missed open passes. Bad, bad, bad and yet KU won.

KU only a 4.5 point favorite against TCU • Dec 31, 2016 02:48 PM

You could've made money on both sides of the line. Opened at -4.5 for KU and you could've put money on TCU +7 at the close and won as well. Get 'em coming and going.

New writer in town • Dec 29, 2016 03:08 PM

No one knew what Hield would become or Kentucky, Duke, KU, and every other team under the sun would've been pursuing him hard. The ranking systems had him projected as a starter for a lesser D-1 team in year 2-3 and indicated he may have been a rotation player at a blue blood by his jr. year. Not worthy of spending too much time recruiting with bigger, more likely to produce, fish to fry.

At this point on this thread its just an argument of semantics.

9-0 at home

7-2 0n the road.

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 28, 2016 10:23 PM

@justanotherfan Good choice! He's one heck of a guard. Right or wrong big man talent is more attractive to me as excellent big men are much more rare than excellent guards.

New writer in town • Dec 28, 2016 04:54 AM

Globally Adidas is kicking Nike's keister. Couple this with Embiid's success and it's a model for successful recruiting abroad. @jaybate-1.0 's shoeco war stuff.

Brennon disagrees with the bpi model as well. I suppose it will improve as the season goes on and more data points are entered?

Big 12

Kansas was and remains the Big 12 title favorite, forever and ever, amen, but this was the first preseason in ages when the Jayhawks didn't appear to have at least one obvious usurper in their midst. Instead, Baylor's surprise rise and Bob Huggins' routine West Virginia brilliance have presented KU with two.

  1. Kansas Jayhawks
  2. Baylor Bears
  3. West Virginia Mountaineers
  4. Iowa State Cyclones
  5. Texas Tech Red Raiders
  6. Kansas State Wildcats
  7. TCU Horned Frogs
  8. Oklahoma State Cowboys
  9. Oklahoma Sooners
  10. Texas Longhorns

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 27, 2016 04:18 PM

I was thinking 25 year old or younger would probaly be better. I forgot baby face Curry is 28 years old, so is Westbrook.

I would hate to start a franchise with an old LBJ and waste his final years while his production hampers our ability to draft high and get him complemetary pieces. I would start with a young Embiid or Anthony Davis personally and accumulate better pieces as the team matures in the next 3 years.

The original point was completely lost in the way I phrased the question and should've phrased the question.

Would you start your franchise with a guard or a post player?
