@RockChalkinTexas

Those guys on the front row wore some fairly serious knee protectors. Maybe Self will bring those back for next season!!!!

@Buster-1926

I liked that number you linked of Ned Beatty.

The guy deserved to have some fun after Deliverance.

Lots of commentators and writers are saying this is Self's best coaching job ever.

That was fairly apparent by December 1 and obvious by mid January. What took them so long?

Seriously.

Good point.

Which coach of a team from across the country now ranked above KU managed greater adversity and finished better with less depth and talent?

I would think there might be one, but I can’t think of one, so...

Ready. Set. Go!

who gives a flip!!! all i'm saying is you are comparing a Ferrari to a Corolla..it doesn't matter what the discussion is...you just don't compare those 2 classes of vehicles.

Wow..this board is going straight UK. Homers going from patting selves on back constantly to giving self BJs for self gratification.

hmm..lets see..let me compare KU to the vastly inferior BIG 12 and make my look bigger!!!

First, I give a flip.

Second, nope. Not a Ferrari-Corrolla comparison.

Third, if you can't think of another HC that did it better this season than Self under the constraints I gave you, then just say so and congratulate us on breaking an NCAA record.

We are enjoying the heck out of it...

And planning for the Big Dance.

@BShark

LOL!

I believe this may have been taken at Black's Beach, San Diego, Raquel's home.

No, wait, there are no nakies in the back ground, so that can't be Black's.

She was the best Paleo Cheese Cake of the Messozoic Era...next to Wilma Flintstone. I always carried a torch for Wilma.

@Hawk8086

Can't hurt to dream about a second rate tournament that was marginalized, and eclipsed by the NCAA tourney, because of how corrupt the NIT once was.

@BeddieKU23

How about:

—No betting;

—Objective refereeing;

—No petroshoeco-agency complex sponsorship of teams; and

—no exploits of the NCAA when speculative stories about FBI investigations are being dribbled out.

@elpoyo

I am still waiting. Are you researching?

@HighEliteMajor

Apt observation.

I believe this was why Self tore down the team in early February. He saw a few subtle but to him serious cracks and decided to try to fix them then, rather than collapse from at the end.

It was a calculated risk of the kind he has gotten so much better at.

More losing could expose more.

But in post season there is only one loss and no more chemistry to deal with.

@dylans

Absolutely.

Although to give Cal his due, like Self, he too learned from LB, who learned from Dean, you spend a big lead the second half to keep the clock ticking.

@dylans

Self = getting better.

Over the course of a few weeks or a month between meetings, the little things add up, when one walks the talk of getting better and the other just talks the talk.

Also, Self is one of those analysts of strategy that appears to thrive on primary experience.

His first meetings with coaches can often be lackluster, because he seems not quite so good at “getting” how to stop an opponent just based on remote viewing. Probably has to do with him being much more deeply engaged in the arena.

@BShark

With those kinds of injuries at KU, you play through, right? Heck we have had guys play operable for large portions of a season. Self just says they’re a little nicked up! Beard needs to talk to Bob Knight some more.

That contact with Doke appeared a WSU-WVU-MSU grade love tap on KU that KU has come to accept as incidental contact.

Remember when Perry Ellis went back in the game shortly with his nose still sticking out the back of his head? From a no-call no less!!!

TTech and Beard apparently can dish, but not take, it appears.

Wait till they have to go up against COACH K, when he appears to be in XTREME CHEAP SHOTTING mode during the Carney; I.e, when 3 down!

BShark said:

@jaybate-1.0 Why would the league care? Plus they are injured.

The old injury excuse?

Gives excellent plausible deniability.

Would Beard use it?

@HighEliteMajor

Great anticipation and thinking NEXT!!

@BShark

Any talk of Beard being critiqued or disciplined by B12 for not playing his best guys?

BShark said:

@jaybate-1.0 He just wasn't going to bother playing injured players after not being able to win the league. When the league title was still in play, you ask them to tough it out, but after that, get rested up for the NCAAT since they are a lock.

Interesting. Then unless Beard is disciplined, it appears ok for head coaches to skip trying to win irrelevant games like conference tournaments, too?

I hope Self rests the top 8 and plays the remainder of the bench, so KU loses the first round game. I am ok with this team being a 1 or 2 seed in order to be healthy and rested for the Carney.

@BShark

Maybe Chris Beard is taking his team in for a rebuild even later than Self did?

Maybe.

But my hunch is he and the team cracked along the lines of some previously hard to see fault lines that Beard did not work through earlier, when he had the chance.

Remember When? • Feb 28, 2018 02:15 AM

@Buster-1926

Looks like either an Olds Aurora, or an Intrigue!

I loved that Aurora, problems and all.

With it and the Intrigue, they were moving in the right direction, despite the value engineering and reputed strategy to hollow out the employee pension funds by swapping underperforming regional malls into them for the equities.

I have loved Oldsmobile’s, since my father’s late 60s OLDS DYNAMIC 88 that was supposed to come with a GM 350, but accidentally got built and delivered with an Olds 425 police interceptor!! OMG! That family sedan Q-Ship could lay scratch till the rubber was gone!

Remember When? • Feb 28, 2018 02:04 AM

@RockChalkinTexas

Thank heavens for somethings not changing!!!

P.S.: It’s also a huge testament to character of each individual player on this team that the players were able to hang in and keep working relentlessly at getting better, keep trying on and adapting to the frequent new alterations until Self and this exceptional bunch of players got it right!!!

Against Tech and Tayhoss, the team finally looked like a team that had donned a bespoke-tailored scheme of clothes, after having been into the tailor in early February for considerable recent alterations, some apparent attitude adjustments and some apparent chemistry reformulations, about how to wear the new duds and move about in them in effective coordination. Whether things were going well, or not, everyone seemed business like, purposeful, with an effective grasp of their roles, and were trying their darndest to give the team what the old coach and tailor had devised for them to give it and, most importantly of all, seemed to “buy into it.” LaGerald Vick, though struggling with scoring productivity, nevertheless appeared to be doing his darnedest to wear the suit and give his teammates what they needed otherwise.

None of the above means the team has more talent, or more depth, than it had before the early February alterations. It means the team in its new suit is getting more out of what it has. It’s scheme, understanding of it, and chemistry appear improved—more fitted to needs of the team dictated by the talents that comprise it. The team appears properly attired for a steady job, at last.

It took Self, the tailor, a long time this season to finalize optimizing of who we were this season, apparently because it took a long time to arrive at exactly who would comprise the roster that would ultimately define who we could be. Many months were spent wearing an ill-fitting, partially-tailored suit apparently tailored for a team that would have Billy Preston eventually. It appeared this period of limbo made it doubly difficult for our players, because they were playing what appeared incompletely tailored scheme awaiting Preston, and so one somewhat ill-fitted to who they actually were without Preston. Apparent cracks in team chemistry appeared at times perhaps due most likely not from personal dislikes, but from unfulfilled expectations about individual roles in limbo and the stresses of trying to learn to play under such uncertain conditions.

But here is the thing: when other coaches find themselves trying to navigate these kinds of troubled straits, what other coach in the B12 manages the situation so effectively? I really cannot think of one. Someone indicated to me a few weeks back that TTech had already had its slump and its coach had them back on the road to a title. But low and behold, NOW, we find that Chris Beard’s fix for TTECH was apparently really just a band aid delay of the wheels coming off Tech.

When Self went in for the audacious rebuild of KU in early February, unlike maybe Chris Beard did earlier with Tech, Self seemed to be risking EVERYTHING, including disaster, on trying to find a way to enable the team to become the best it could be. And I at least believe he was! But the risk taking appears to have yielded a team that seems much better suited to competing through ups and downs and titles and ring runs now and that appears something Chris Beard cannot persuasively claim after his response to his team’s tough stretch earlier in the season.

Self continues to amaze me!!

Remember When? • Feb 27, 2018 11:53 PM

The Big 12 has had some pretty serious talents during that run. Not to mention some yokel named Durant!!!

Have the issues discussed in the books in the title in 1990 book covering the 1980s (College Sports, Inc.), and in 2000 book covering the 1980s to 1990s (Sole Influence) afflicting the college basketball industry ever been resolved?

Is the FBI investigation aimed at resolving these sorts of issues, or something else?

What’s up with Lagerald? • Feb 27, 2018 07:21 PM

LaGerald is by definition okay, but maybe not optimizing right now.

If he weren't okay, Self would have pulled him from the starting rotation again.

As Self might say, LaGerald may be going through some stuff, but he's getting the job done in his floor game, or the Magnificent Seven would not be B12 Conference Champions!!!!!

KU just won the outright B12 title with him as a starter.

LaCobre is alright with moi.

I still have chances for further prophecies coming true.

I also predicted that Self would expose TTech's vulnerabilities and lead to some Tech losses.

Voila! WVU promptly beat Tech after KU did. batetradamus 1.0 all-seeing seer of the ancient basketball ways of the heartland!!!!

Fingers crossed that we see Tech take some more losses and enter the conference tournament demoralized and ready for more beatings by the Magnificent Seven!!!!

You are still THE MAGNIFICIENT SEVEN, even if Bill got Silvio a few minutes.

WITH TEN TO GO, KU IS FIGHTING THE CRIMSON UNIFORM JINX AS MUCH AS TAYHOSS!

Villanova? • Feb 27, 2018 03:08 AM

@Statmachine

Call me simple, but wouldn’t it be hard to explain making a team out of the Top 20 a 1 seed?

I figure ANOVA was a 1 seed back in October.

I was wondering how ANOVA only had 1 loss, before the widened FBI investigation SCANDAL broke recently, or did they lose a few before it widened.

Go figure!

Whatever, I hope the Hawks get a crack at them.

As a resident doddering old fool, may I take a moment and remark to all that come to visit our humble site for fun, or even possibly as part of their work, that this thread is apparently essentially speculation, opining and wondering by laymen fans, even if some may work as legal professionals during the day time. We are most happy for our team to have apparently achieved a record 14th consecutive title and for our coach who appears to have been trying to do it the right way and effectively without OADs at the 1 and 5 positions that some other programs appear to be able to attract in considerable numbers.

We all understand we are just kibitzing about the news of sports lately until the next KU game consumes us.

But it is exciting to see minds at play and quite engaged.

Rock Chalk!

I for one don’t want “the Feds out.”

I want them involved, if they think they need to be, and I want citizens to remember the founders said we need to be vigilant about law enforcement officials same as we should be vigilant about all government officials.

Checks and balances, baby!

No perfection here on earth.

Got to watch the watchers, too.

It’s all part of governing ourselves.

President Trump, Congressman Nunes, Admiral Rogers of NSA, and the F.I.S.A. Court in their reputedly declassified findings regarding what Admiral Rogers reputedly alerted them to, may concur with you that DOJ and FBI are not quite perfect. :-)

(Note: I could of course unintentionally have misinterpreted all of the above, because I am only a layman citizen exposed to a media in which the news currently is often darned hard to makes sense of.)

The Magnificient Seven • Feb 25, 2018 05:28 AM

Seven were all that played the day KU BROKE THE RECORD FOR MOST CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE TITLES!

Seven!

The Magnificient Seven!

And 3 starters played 38-40 minutes.

Talk about manning up!!!

But whither Silvio?

DG and Svi = absolute Men.

What the hell! They are all absolute men!
