@jaybate-1.0 Bobby Knight has always been about as right wing as one can get. I have always liked what he had to say about basketball. I filter out the rest. Like most who supported Trump he most likely hated Hillary because of ___. The rest was ;your standard very conservative outlook.
@Crimsonorblue22 I share your thoughts. Unless Bragg improves dramatically he is not going anywhere.
@BShark Late tips in the central time zone make for much better times to watch in the pacific zone. It's all a matter of perspective. Imagine being a fan in the east where the game tonight starts at 10 pm and you have to go to work tomorrow.
@jaybate-1.0 One thing to remember is that even in the league good offense beats good defense. Stopping Josh by ganging up on his drives only works if he can't pass and none of the others on the team can shoot. Your scenario also assumes that an opponent can keep the team from playing a full court game. That may happen and if it does we are toast but I still have to see it happen.
@wissox How can a KU fan not be concerned about FTs? When we watch the Warriors play an NBA game and someone clanks a couple my wife usually asks me if the played for Kansas
@stoptheflop I have to agree with you about the interception in the end zone. It did look like that in the live shot. As for the hit on Stanley, the targeting part was incidental to the result of KU getting the first down from the penalty. The roughing the quarterback call was fairly obvious. The targeting was not so clear but it only got the player ejected. The ejection may have helped Texas as the same player had made a number of screw ups in the game.
@globaljaybird Your reference to the Wolf Man on XERS from Del Rio, Texas brought back memories. One of the funnier aspects of his being on only after midnight was the fact that it was a religious station during the day selling all sorts of religious stuff
I remember the night a friend and I drove to Lincoln to see Nebraska play Oklahoma for the Big 8 championship the day that Kennedy was shot. Every station on the dial was playing dirge music except for two. The first was a rock and roll station from Havana, Cuba and the second was XERS playing the same type of stuff blasted over their 500k watt transmitter located in Mexico so as to get around the US limit on 50k watts.
He shouldn't bring the ball down. Unfortunately it happens in the NBA as well as at KU. On the other hand, the only people not seriously fouling him are unable to touch him. BB is a tough game under the boards, but that is a bit much. I particularly like the big guy who has both hands firmly planted on his right arm. I guess the arm is a part of the ball.
Not about Perry or Wayne but good news about Oubre. http://wizofawes.com/2016/10/22/washington-wizards-pick-kelly-oubre-option-2017-18-season/ ↗
@DoubleDD Who stated that another team's loss justifies a KU loss? The point being made is that other good teams lose. Maryland, ISU, and Miami all lost on Tuesday and Duke lost last night. Good teams lose. No college team has gone undefeated since 1976. What doesn't make sense to me is how this is a difficult concept to understand.
More than a few people on this site stated that this was a game that we could lose. Why did these people think that? It was because of the WVU press which ate us alive the other night. The loss was a team effort by both players and coaches.
I'll wait and see what happens over the next few weeks before I write off this season.
@Bwag If you missed much of the first half then you miss the two plays in a row where Williams went around Hunter as if his shoe was nailed to the floor. That was the point where he joined Tyler and Evan.
@jayballer54 Back up the truck and empty his office. Coach K is finished. Duke will probably never win another game.
@DinarHawk My point is that when teams lose their best effort is generally not on display. That includes players and coaches. You and I are both displeased by the loss. What do you think Cyclone fans feel right now? There is a poll on one of their websites questioning whether they should forfeit the rest of the season. Fred Hoiberg who sits at the father for the past few years is being crucified for not leaving enough good players. Jameel McKay is going from defensive player of the year to "What has happened to Jameel?".
Fans are fans. This is the best of all possible worlds when the team wins and the season is going into the toilet when it loses. Frank Mason didn't all of a sudden become a wuss. Brannen Greene didn't suddenly become a bad shooter. Bill Self did not suddenly become stupid (although there are some who always think that is the case). They played a bad game.
I must have forgotten that the 2008 team never played a bad game. How was it that we were not undefeated that year?
I'm confused. Many people on this site thought that this was going to be a very tough game and that KU could lose. Some people stated that they had penciled this in as a loss before the season started. We then proceeded to play a bad game and got beat. How does anyone here think that you get beat? THE OTHER TEAM PLAYS BETTER for whatever reason. Teams that are beaten usually get out hustled, out rebounded, and out played.
Except for a couple of people who all of a sudden think that the winner of the league will have 1 or at most 2 losses, the general consensus has been that the winner will probably lose 3 to 4 games and most of these will be on the road. Well guess what, we lost a game on the road. Who in the hell thought that that would never happen this year.
This is what I love about this site. People go on and on about how only tournament losses count, who cares about winning the Big XII, yada, yada, yada. The sky is falling. Bill Self is washed up. The season has now taken a different direction. We will never win again except against KSU (no one here ever thinks it is possible to lose to KSU). Now if we lose to TCU on Saturday and OSU next week I will become nervous about this team. Until then I will be disappointed that we didn't win in Morgantown and will be waiting to see what comes next.
Chill!!
@BeddieKU23 What you quoted from Haley's note "but those are likely sample-size flukes. And even if they weren’t, they have nothing to do with him." invokes that same problem that I pointed out about HEM's analysis. There is no data quoted by anyone to show that Hunter (or Diallo) that has enough sample size to be relevant. I would like to see Hunter and Diallo play more myself, but that case is not made by any numbers I have seen.
@HighEliteMajor How much does Diallo play at the time? Something around 5-8 minutes. No problem with extrapolating that. What is the minimum number of minutes that Diallo has to play to make your conclustion meaningful. How about 1, if not that 2. Admit it, you have no data to give any approximation of what he would do with 25 minutes. Not to be too picky but what does "despite all of the rancor for Traylor or Lucas" mean? You do know what rancor means? Obviously not.
@jaybate-1.0 A reference to a Gleaner! No spring chicken you.
@DoubleDD You are correct. The chances are that Buddy will not be an NBA star. That can also be said of most of the college players who are drafted this year including many of the lottery picks. It is very interesting how many of the very good players who were later round choices or free agents from Northeast Southwest Podunk State. Any one who would take a bet as to whether any current college player will be an NBA star has more money than sense.
On the other hand, Buddy has demonstrated that he is able to improve year after year and may have a shot at NBA stardom. He has demonstrated that he is a star in college and KU had better keep him under 46 in Norman or we are toast there. From what I have seen in college ball this year, I would be more comfortable with him taking a game winning shot than anyone.
@Kong Good points. I spend much too much time on this site and therefore do not attempt to read other school's basketball blogs. :You point out that Lucas got points because Kruger left him alone. Kruger has been acclaimed here as a very good coach who wins wherever he goes. If anyone here reads OU sites, are they going on about how Lucas was left alone and how that cost them the game? Where do OU fans think their team stands now that they have lost to a team that plays the wrong players, shoots too few threes, and has failed to adapt to the current basketball landscape? There are a number of KU fans here who are upset about how we won the game. How many OU fans are happy about the way they lost the game?
@drgnslayr Given that OU and ISU for that matter play 7 or 8 people who pushes the first team in practice? Having watched both teams in pre-conference games it doesn't appear that they play the small number because of shortening their rotations. They play a short bench because that is all that they have for good players. Vick hasn't played much so far, but he surely puts more pressure on Frank or Devonte in practice than those on the other benches. The same goes for Svi, Carlton, Cheick, Jamari, etc.
This is where our depth will pay off during the course of the season. When teams get to the tournament the timeouts are longer, there are generally more stoppages to see who knocked the ball out of bounds and so on. There is no reason to play as many people and a long bench is not of as much value. However, that long bench can be invaluable in the months leading up to the tournament.
@truehawk93 Have you watched Hield play at all this year? He hasn't put up 46 on anyone else but he was averaging 24 coming into the game. He was the conference player of the year last year.
@Lulufulu You can see it for free but you will have to sign up for an account.
@nwhawkfan It is currently on espn360.com in the replay section.
@Crimsonorblue22 Diallo has stated that he doesn't know what he will do next year, but that he only plans to be in college for 2 years.
@Bwag I am not the biggest fan of Dickie V but he has seen more basketball in his life than you would ever dream. I am sure that he knows more about basketball than you ever will. How much has ESPN offered you for your trenchant commentary? I thought so.
@globaljaybird My particular favorite is when Devonte is running down the court next to an OU player and after the play he had to rub his face after taking an elbow. I am sure that the elbow was not intentional but getting hit in the face in the middle of the floor should garner some official attention.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I am the last person to mistake LL for a great offensive whiz. My response was to the claim that the offense slows down that much when he is in the game. I think that 37 points is not bad against a team that is very highly ranked defensively. I know that this conversation will continue for the rest of this year and also for next since he is a junior.
You are correct that he was in the game to rebound and muscle with OU's big man and for that he did a good job.
@RockkChalkk How is it that KU scored 109 points total and 77 points in regulation with this big, lumbering boat anchor at center for much of the second half? This was done against a team that ranks in the top 20 in virtually every defensive team statistic. Why were the announcers (who have seen more than a few games between them) praising LL's rebounding and getting up and down the court?
@drgnslayr The call against Frank for stripping the ball was horrendous. It could have been made by one of the other officials on the floor and it would be just a blown call. To make the call when you can't even see the play is what frosted me. There is no excuse for the call.
What I was wondering about during the first half last night was whether they were performing funerals during the timeouts. My memory is slipping but I can't recall another game at AFH in which the crowd was so dead. There were a couple of shots of one side of the seats and everyone was sitting there like they were in church.
The students are on break but that was ridiculous,
@drgnslayr I totally agree that Self plays those whom he thinks will help the most now and in March. There is a lot of talk about which players have the most "upside". Obviously at the 4/5 Cheick and Carlton have the most eventual upside. The real question is who has the most upside for THIS year.
The thing that has bugged me about our depth has to do with practice. Depth doesn't have to be used in games, but it is extremely important in practice. Not only are the people in the front court fighting for playing time, they also push each other in practice. There is a big difference between practicing against our other bigs and practicing against coaches sons.
Merry Christmas to all of the kubucket's elves.
@brooksmd Wayne's fouls in the first half were stupid and not the fault of the officials. One had to do with a pump fake and the other was for reaching. If you don't want to get fouls called then don't give the officials a reason to call them.
@RockkChalkk The offense came to a halt at the beginning of the second half because the ball was sticking much more than in the first. People were trying to dribble rather than pass and play became a bit more selfish. This was much more on Frank, Wayne, and Devonte than Jamari. We didn't get any real scoring from the 5. We got 2 points from Hunter, 2 from Carlton, 4 from Cheick, and 6 from Jamari. How did our scoring slow down because of him? As was pointed out, he was in the second half to get things moving after the team showed a lack of hustle at the beginning of that half and to hit the boards which he did.
Since Self was getting what he wanted from him he stayed in. I was screaming at the TV also in the second half. That had much, much more to do with missing bunny after bunny after bunny than with the lack of offense from Jamari.
@jayballer54 JR was on the KU track team when I worked for it. He was a competitor but did not have John's skills. It must be kind of tough to have your younger brother get all of the pub. Really nice guy.
@JayHawkFanToo Prior to my retirement I worked on web based applications for ~15 years so yes I do know that blue is a almost always a link. The problem is that amongst text where one is not expecting a link it is difficult to discern that there is a difference between blue and black. Most of the links here are URLs so they are obviously a link. Some people when putting a link as a normal word in a sentence explicitly call out that there is a link.
I only posted because you seemed to take umbrage at @DoubleDD for not reading the link Obviously he was not the only one. It was also to indicate to other posters that people can miss a link when there is no reason to expect one.
@JayHawkFanToo Just for info. It is a bit hard to see that your link is really a link. I didn't see that "read" was a link until I went back to read your post after reading the last one.
@jaybate-1.0 Nick Pino! I never thought I would see his name on any basketball site. I actually felt sorry for the big guy. When he got into the game the chant in AFH was "Pino eats babies". The only thing more massive than his size was the amount of hair on his body.
If he helped KSU I don't remember it being in AFH.
@jaybate-1.0 Do you think that Selden's improved mechanics result from outside consultation or could it possibly be due to someone at KU? Although most of the conversation here revolves around Self; mentions of the assistants involve firing most if not all and hiring people who can recruit and develop. What say you?
@justanotherfan You do realize that when KU plays a game that there is another team on the court whose primary concern is to stop us from doing what we want. In the Harvard game they committed numerous turnovers in the first half. Some of that was because of our defense and some of it was to to poor decision making by Harvard. They tightened up their play in the second half. Some of that had to do with our defense and some due to the fact that Harvard does have a coach who probably emphasized taking care of the ball.
It is turnovers and defensive rebounds that trigger a faster pace. We all know what happened as far as rebounding is concerned.
Tonight we play a team that runs an offense that is designed to slow down the pace. That is different that what UCLA and others that we have played run. You stated that this is a team that is designed to play fast. Who do you think designed the team?
Where did you see Self indicate that he wants to slow down the pace? I haven't heard that in any of the interviews nor in articles quoting him.
@jayballer54 There is no doubt that a player can have a career in the NBA where the task is rebounding and defense. The only question deals with draft position and therefore money. Rodman was drafted in the third round when they had that many rounds. He played most of his career with Detroit and Chicago which were very good teams and didn't need scoring. Lottery picks are usually drafted by bad teams or teams that are not doing as well as they have in the past. That also means that the drafting team probably needs to put butts in the seats. The non die-hard NBA fan is usually more interested in offense.
Diallo is kind of a tweener. He has a very long wingspan but he is only 6'9" measured with the KU tape. His chances of being a lottery pick are diminished if he is viewed as a defensive player only. That is not to say that he won't be drafted high; but only that his chances would be better if he were a scorer or 6'11".
@Crimsonorblue22 A win may be a win for UK, UNC, or Dook. It is not that simple at KU. At KU a lot of people consider it a win only if it is by 30 points playing the people who I know should play and running the scheme that I know should be run. Actually it is rather more complicated than that. Scoring fewer points than the opponent is also a win if it is achieved by playing my players and my scheme.
@DoubleDD I don't think that Bill Self can possibly be as dumb as you make him out to be. There must be only one answer. Bill Self is actually a double agent. He is actively undermining the KU team. You would be a hero of major proportions if you could find out who is paying him or who is blackmailing him.
@Bosthawk This isn't weird at all. Traylor has been bashed for 3 years. You must not have read kusports before this. Brady was hammered, bashed and dumped on for 2 years. As the old saying goes "the more things change, the more they stay the same".
@JayHawkFanToo The poor, deluded guys. I attribute this to a 15 minute session after each practice where Bill Self beats Jamari's abilities into their heads. Brainwashing at the highest level. What the heck do high level D1 players really know about the game.
@nwhawkfan He is suspended from 9 ACC games. That is actually more important than 9 games at the beginning of the season. Of course that may not be important if he isn't interested in winning the conference championship. He is also having 108 of his wins removed from his record. His case is no longer pending. His punishment has been upheld.
@JRyman With a few exceptions those who start or play meaningful minutes at the 5 do not have an outside game. In a post a couple of days ago I listed those who shot more than 0.3 three point shots per game. For the most part your typical 5 shoots less that 0,1 3 pointers per game. The best known 5s in the league are Andre Jordan, Dwight Howard, and Andre Drummond. Howard leads this group with a lifetype average or 0.06. Andre Drummond is currently the hottest 5 averaging 18.1 points and 17.2 rebounds per game. He has not attempted a 3 pointer yet this season.
Although 3 point shots attempts are not necessarily the best gauge of an outside game, I find it hard to believe that someone who shoots less than 0.1 3 point attempts per game has much of an outside game.
@DoubleDD I'm not sure what you mean by "deep" history but if you mean "long" then Duke doesn't even belong in the conversation. Prior to coach K they only thing I would remember them for is being the first team to lose the NC to UCLA and their streak. If you are talking about current history then UCLA isn't in the list. They currently suck and have for a few years. UNC has been very good since the mid 50s and Frank McGuire so they have a good history. Kentucky leads KU and the rest of the country in wins and have been relatively consistent for many years.
I notice that you didn't include UCONN and they have been hotter than anybody over the past 20 years. Before that NADA. They have won 4 NCs during that time while Kentucky has 3. They have won 2 in the past 5 years and Kentucky has won 1.
From your point of view nobody in the country gives any part of a rat about any midwest team in any sport. That's life.
@drgnslayr I normally agree with much of what you write; but I disagree about the how dropping the assists percentage is good by being a step to building a new offense and that whipping the ball around the outside is bad and stifles the offense.
Everything that the Golden State Warriors do is not perfect, but they have been used by yourself and others as an example of good offense. The Warriors currently lead the league in assists at almost 30 per game. With the exception of Steph Curry and sometimes Klay Thompson most of their three point offense is the result of assists and people taking positions on the court that maximize their individual shooting ability. Harrison Barnes and now Brandon Rush spend a lot of time in the corners. Draymond Green shoots most of his shots from the elbow extended and the top of the key. Andre Iguodala takes most of his shots from the side. They pass the ball from side to side and over the top constantly and frequently will make the extra pass within the last 3 seconds of the shot clock. And horror of horrors they run a 3 man weave at the top of the key a couple of times a game.
I doubt that anyone would characterize their offense as being less than aggressive.
No only did Brandon play very well is the last game but everyone associated with the Warriors really like him. The fans appreciate his play and remember how well he played before he blew out his knee. The team really likes him and the Warrior announcers really pull for the guy. What was really great to see was how he was smiling when the fans gave him a big hand after he was substituted for following his 3 point shots in the third quarter. He normally looks rather dour but he lit up like a Christmas tree.
He started in place of the injured Harrison Barnes who may be out 1-2 weeks with a bad ankle sprain. He fills in well for Barnes since both are very good with corner threes. His biggest issue is getting his confidence back and that appears to have now happened.
