ESU Game Thread • Nov 04, 2021 01:07 PM

I wonder what happened to exhibition games against good teams? We used to have these games but it was against a national team from Serbia or something like that and they were usually very competitive games.

@BeddieKU23 I read that article (the one about OSU) and was having trouble with the story. Because it started out acting as if OSU was being punished for the 300 dollars and this is really outrageous. But then it was talking about the other program transgression and I was thinking, wait is the consequence a cumulative punishment, or just as the article implied? Any insight on this?

Jalen • Nov 04, 2021 01:38 AM

@drgnslayr I think there's a difference between punishment and discipline. the root of discipline is disciple which means learner. Don't know if you have kids but even if you don't you do understand that we as parents were to discipline our kids and not punish them. Punishment does just that, hurts the kid. Abusers frequently don't learn the difference and even those of us who weren't abusers sometimes punished because we were mad. Discipline teaches. I believe this teaches, thus it's not punishment.

Jalen • Nov 02, 2021 03:07 PM

@drgnslayr I think for the first time in the history of KUBuckets I'm disagreeing with you. Games don't matter. Life does and teaching a valuable lesson of the consequences of bad judgment may save his life and others as well.

Jayhawks in the pros • Nov 02, 2021 02:10 AM

I noticed Svi got a start tonight and played pretty well with 15 points, 5 boards and 5 dimes.

Silence of the flock • Nov 01, 2021 03:24 PM

@drgnslayr You may have that in your pocket already which means Bill Gates has already benefited from it!

Silence of the flock • Nov 01, 2021 03:03 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Yes, that's an issue for sure. My mom likes to watch games of all sorts and frequently calling me up asking what channel to find it on, like what numbers to push on the remote. The worst was when the Cubs were playing game six of the NLCS to go to the freaking world series for the first time since 1945 and she couldn't find the channel it was on because Fox was showing KU against TCU. Can you imagine a game between the Cubs and Dodgers of historic significance being relegated to FS1 because the chosen network of MLB wanted to show a horrible KU football team? I hate the Cubs but I'm still obviously pissed off at MLB because they are so stupid. Compared to most problems in the world it's small change I admit, but it's just insane.

Jalen • Nov 01, 2021 02:54 AM

@Kcmatt7 Yes, PHOF.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 31, 2021 09:45 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich That's awesome! I sometimes think we lose sight of how athletic these guys are.

Silence of the flock • Oct 31, 2021 09:42 PM

@mayjay Oh you're always the pragmatist making my dinosaurish ways look like i'm the stuck in the 70's guy!! I do like the ALA Carte model of cable/dish or whatever. I really don't want to go to a totally streaming type option for viewing. I like my remote control.

Silence of the flock • Oct 31, 2021 01:47 PM

What if ESPN quietly upped their monthly charge for everyone by a couple of bucks and then let us all peruse ESPN+ without ponying up even more money? I know I'd end up paying about the same if they did that but it would still feel like we're getting what we're paying for instead of you loyal subscribers to ESPN now have to pay more if you want to watch your favorite teams.

Silence of the flock • Oct 31, 2021 01:45 PM

The NFL doesn't suck in my view. It bothers me a lot that it dominates sports coverage, as well as college football at the expense of other sports. MLB has fallen victim to this and quietly moved their World Series schedule a few years back to starting on a Tuesday and ending the following Wednesday. Previously the series started on a Saturday night and would end on a Sunday night. So four of the seven games would be on weekend nights. I always loved an epic game 7 on a Sunday night. Now if they go 7, every other person is preoccupied with their work schedules, kids leagues, etc and viewership goes down. And it's all because Fox doesn't want baseball ruining its football ratings. So in my mind Fox sucks more than football or ESPN which is making me pay twice to watch their programming.

Silence of the flock • Oct 30, 2021 03:42 PM

Guess I'll reluctantly give ESPN more money for the + so I can watch more games. I already pay ESPN to watch their channels but they want more more more. With 9! 9! games on some lower tier channel I'd miss a quarter of the season if I didn't purchase it. Oh well, I want to watch so I'll grumble and get out the credit card. Too bad it wasn't like netflix where we all could share the same log in! My TV has ACC network and SEC network so I doubt Duke or Kentucky ever have to play games on such a low rated platform. BIG is great but even a lot of their games end up on BIG+.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 29, 2021 03:05 AM

Been a few busy days so I've missed some action. Joel Embiid tonight 30 points, 18 boards. Josh Jackson was much less productive scoring 7. Wayne Selden didn't play against the Bulls who lost for the first time. Neither did Grimes. Devonte is averaging 18 points and 5 assists so far. Great to see.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 26, 2021 01:27 AM

Oubre having a strong game tonight. 19 points, 8 RBs, 5-9 3's. Svi is shooting well in limited minutes with 5 points. Not gonna stay up late to see how M. Morris does in LA or BMAC in Portland.

KU upset alert, right now • Oct 25, 2021 10:49 PM

@nwhawkfan It's not just the Big 12 of course. I'm also a BIG fan and tired of OSU. SEC pretty darn tired of Alabama, ACC tired of Clemson, and well the entire nation is tired of Notre Dame!

Met a Jayhawk this weekend • Oct 25, 2021 01:38 PM

My nephew married a woman whose cousin played for KU the last three seasons. I don’t follow the team closely enough to recognize the name Jalani Brown but it turns out he was a decent player earning honorable mention all league. Kind of awkward in a way meeting a player on a really bad team because you can’t bring up great games or things like that.

It was still cool to meet him and wish him well.

I’m convinced we’d have won several more championships if his idea had been the norm but I agree it’s a bad idea.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 23, 2021 03:07 AM

Busy night on the NBA scene. Sri had a nice effort scoring 8 with 3 boards. Oubre had a real nice night with 25 points off the bench. Wayne Seldes scored zero in 2 minutes. Joel Embiid off to a slowish start scoring 19 against the Nets. Doke riding the pines.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 23, 2021 03:01 AM

@KirkIsMyHinrich Yeah he was fun to watch.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 22, 2021 02:58 PM

Spectacular 133 point first half out west last night. Steph had 25 after 1 quarter making people calculate the possibility of breaking our Wilt's unbreakable record. He ended up with 'only' 45 which was 18 more than M. Morris and Wigs scored combined.

Marcus Garrett is officially an in the books NBA player, earning 5 scoreless minutes although he did contribute 2 assists which would be like 18.3 assists if he had played the full 48 minutes. Pretty cool a guy with his unique skill set is now an NBA player.

Congrats To The Truth • Oct 21, 2021 11:41 PM

He's kind of an under the radar all time great. Since I don't follow the NBA as closely I guess I didn't realize he'd be in that upper echelon of players, of course 75 all time greats gets to be a big number. Funny too is that there's already a place for all time greats called the Hall of Fame.

Hope Udeh becomes DehMan

Silence of the flock • Oct 21, 2021 08:41 PM

Did you all see the video of big Dave making the full court shot? It was actually impressive because it didn’t look entirely lucky.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 21, 2021 03:22 PM

Oubre 14 points but ugly shooting percent. A few boards and assists

Josh Jackson 7, 4, 2 I watched this game and he had some good moments in one stretch including a really nice block.

In a head to head matchup Joel had 22, 5, 6 against Devonte who had a nice shooting night making 4 of 6 threes with 5 assists and 18 points total. Missing Zion (surprise surprise) so maybe assist opps will increase.

Selden didn't play in NY, same for Doke, the only bench guy that didn't play for Utah.

I think that about covers it for our guys last night.

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 20, 2021 11:53 PM

Noticed Quentin Grimes on the Knicks roster as well

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 20, 2021 02:02 PM

Wigs with 12 points, 7 boards and 1 assist.

@drgnslayr LOL!! I love internet typos or auto corrects. Pre-Madonna made me laugh!! I know I'm a prima donna when it comes to spelling so forgive me! (you're a great writer by the way, keep it up)

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 19, 2021 09:14 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Forgot about that. Thanks

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 19, 2021 09:14 PM

@BeddieKU23 You know I was thinking about him and thought, naw, shouldn't waste time looking him up. I'd love to see him do well. Thanks for the add!

Jayhawks in the pros • Oct 19, 2021 03:25 PM

We can update how our guys are doing here. We have quite a few populating rosters. Marcus Garrett is listed on the roster of the Heat. They have a Morris brother too. Joel in Philly, Wigs in San Fran, Devonte in Charlotte joined now by Kelly Oubre. DDot hoping to stick in my backyard here in Chicago, and his running mate, the behemoth Doke is hoping for the same in Utah. Marcus still in LaLa Land. BMac, one of my favs from his one year in town is now in Portland. Really glad for him as his extreme poverty growing up has been alleviated. Someone pointed out the Lebron hasn't won a title without a Jayhawk on the roster so the Lakers shouldn't have just cut Frank Mason. Josh Jackson seems to have staying power in the league and we're all pulling for him to succeed in Detroit. Svi is taking his sveet stroke north to Canada. Lets keep checking those box scores and updating here as the season starts up this week!

Silence of the flock • Oct 15, 2021 04:07 PM

@BeddieKU23 Thanks, forgot those guys although I didn't look at rosters to try to remind myself. Dedric Lawson was indeed a nice transfer although it didn't lead us to any sort of promised land. Of those others you mentioned I think Tarik surprised me the most especially since he also earned a couple of seasons in the NBA. I never saw that coming.

Silence of the flock • Oct 15, 2021 01:27 PM

Our track record with upperclassmen transfers is spotty. Malik Newmann delivered, Jeff Withey did too. Charlie Moore? Poor kid just need to bite the bullet and call it a career and get on with life, although Miami is a nice place to discover finally to hang it up! I expected way more from Isaiah Moss and the hyphenated named kid last year who seemed to try extra hard that he was good and failed spectacularly. I think Yesufu can grow into a usable piece. Remy I do have high hopes for as do the ones who chose him for Big12 player of the year. But I still seem conditioned to give transfers a sideways glance.

Silence of the flock • Oct 14, 2021 01:05 AM

And if Dave becomes the 2nd coming of Wilt we'll be really really really good.

Silence of the flock • Oct 13, 2021 11:02 PM

@BeddieKU23 Forgot to mention Braun in my post. Man he exudes potential at times and then disappears many others. I'd love to see a much improved Braun, but I guess you put what I was trying to say pretty well, these guys don't feel like NC potential players, even FF would be a ceiling that seems unattainable. Another great chance for Bill Self to show his HOF crews and coach this team to heights not believed possible.

Silence of the flock • Oct 13, 2021 05:07 PM

@drgnslayr Harris I'm not feeling positive about yet, more of a show me vibe. I recall his shot looking very much like a junior high kid who still has to load up to heave it up to the basket from any kind of distance. I'm hoping it is more of a pure college player stroke.

Speaking of show me, I should have mentioned the showdown with Misery. I'm thrilled they're on the schedule. Some were in my view kind of petty about stiffing them and not wanting to play them out of spite. To me, the Missouri game was THE game on the schedule. Still peeved I couldn't watch the last one as I had a wedding to go to. So bring em on. I'm guessing it becomes more of throwback to the hot days of the rivalry, kind of a throw the records out the window style game.

BTW I did reference Wilson and it's amazing to see RS Sophomore next to his name because he seems like he should be a senior. I see big things for him by the time he's finished in Lawrence and hoping this year is the start of the big things.

Silence of the flock • Oct 13, 2021 03:59 PM

I think the double whammy of having a very realistic chance at a NC taken from us to last years underwhelming product, to the many question marks of this years talent has us not enthused for the upcoming season.

So many seasons this has been a busy time of discussing rotations, schedules, other teams in the league and what not. This is the first new topic in almost 2 weeks. Amazing!

Some of the past members had us talking a lot too of course and they're MIA's. The fact my computer at home won't load the Bucket anymore makes it more challenging for me to stay on the site consistently.

I don't have a ton of confidence for this season. We have some transfers that we're really relying on. Remy being the key transfer I'd guess. But will the ISU kid contribute? The Drake kid? (see my apathy has me not knowing names) Big Dave and Mitch are returning bigs. Dave would be a borderline starter on our best teams. Grandpa Mitch is good for some high energy minutes. Harris I'm excited about.

Wilson started off the year showing out against Kentucky. But that almost seemed like his peak performance of the year. Ochai, flashes of brilliance, but we need a bright steady light instead of flashes. I think if the both of them can contribute consistently at their ceiling we'll win a lot of games.

The freshmen? Unless they're a once in a decade type high potential player like Wigs or Joel were I just wait and see. I really couldn't name any of them. Looked at the roster and several of them I haven't heard of. Part of this is because of my devotion to a particular baseball team (RIP) so I haven't been r6eading up on guys, watching youtubes of their spectacular dunks against 6'2" dudes. I don't care about Late Night and that they lit it up that night. It's nothing more than a pickup game. I suppose we've had guys score 20 on late night and not score that many total the rest of the season.

I guess I'll have to get out the wallet to watch games on ESPN+ even though I've been paying ESPN for decades through my dish package. Really wish they'd honor those who've paid for ESPN for a long time with a free subscription, or even half off. I wouldn't mind seeing KU in the BIG both for proximity and for exposure on the BIG channel. But they took the high road and tried to hold the league together.

By the way screw you texas and chokelahoma for abandoning your league and going to the football only league. May you lose more there than you did in our league and by a lot. The snake Billy Tubbs would be proud of his sooners for being aholes.

I'm proud to be a KU grad. It's allowed me to follow this team late into March every season. I wore my needs to be replaced 2008 T shirt last night hoping I can order a new one with 2022 on it. Don't want to wait 30 years for the next when I'll probably be pushing up daisy's from below, and if not that, annoying the heck out of my wife and kids for being a crotchety very old man.

I found sheet music for the the fight song that I play on my trumpet. It's a blast to play. The alma mater Hail to thee or whatever it's called I can just play without music. Both cause a sort of worshipful experience in me that is hard to explain.

I love telling friends up here when the GOAT conversations come up about how it's an insult to our GOAT named Wilt that it isn't MJ and Wilt in the debate. I can honestly say both could be co-GOATS. But watching peoples reactions when I mention about Wilt's NBA career and their eyes widen. There's really only two comparisons in sport. Babe Ruth and Wayne Gretzky. But Wilt is right there with them. If you don't know what I'm talking about look up his stats. Don't give me crap about lack of championships. Having the greatest team in pro sports history to go up against when he was in his prime is the answer to that question.

So go ahead and chat. Give me some reasons to be optimistic. Heck affirm my pessimism! Give me your opinions, tell me I'm an "idot", or 'your stoopid' or whatever. Tell me I'm brilliant or tell me to get out of my moms basement every once in a while. Go ahead, make my day!

Clay Helton • Oct 13, 2021 03:04 PM

Texas and USC have still been recruiting at a high level, except USC which was below 50th in 2020. So it appears the talent is still coming. Nebraska is a good example of the recruits not going to a school because of the schools past success. Michigan is heading that way, although Harbaugh has them playing better this year.

KU and basketball is an interesting thing. The name has always sold itself to recruits, but of course a steady parade of HOF coaches has been a part of that. Should KU mess up in hiring Self's replacement (whenever that is) then the winning ways will surely stop and may relegate us to a once glorious program status. shudder........

I haven't been here as much. Been spending a lot of on line time over at the Sox site with their great season having me hyped up. Don't want to be that annoying guy hyping up my team that no one else cares about so i don't mention it here unless it involves the Royals. I think the disappointing end to the last two seasons has lessened my enthusiasm for KU hoops but it will certainly come back when the games begin again.

Mr. Bean goes to Carolina game thread • Sep 11, 2021 12:19 AM

I was wondering where our Sox play by play guy went this weekend Jason Benetti. I am a huge fan of his and well I found him, doing the KU game!

Mr. Bean goes to Carolina game thread • Sep 11, 2021 12:16 AM

@nwhawkfan Yes will try to help you out. Boston pitcher is a Missouri grad so of course I hate him.

Rock Chalk White Sox, uh, Jay Hawks. Sorry mixed up my sports. Working the remote tonight

@approxinfinity I had thought Coach K had retired already. I'm already getting nauseated thinking about all of the Coach K syrup about to be served up all season.

BIG, ACC, PAC12 Alliance • Aug 31, 2021 04:02 AM

@FarmerJayhawk No Jayhawk would be fooled by that though

@jayballer67 That proves it is about the money. That Royals team was loaded with talent. Took the Yanks to 5 games 3 years in a row. 2 of those years the Yankees won it. Catfish may have gotten the Royals past the Yankees. Of course those years I was a Yankees fan because I lived there as a boy. Liked the Mets too.

You are right, can't blame the players so I blame MLB. Unlike the other professional leagues that have economic systems to prevent NY teams from automatically having an advantage MLB does nothing to prevent it. They don't stop their own freaking MLB network from favoring the Yankees. You'd think 28 other MLB teams would be saying to the organization that runs their league to stop favoring the Yankees, and they probably do, but MLB just keeps going right along and favoring the Yanks. MLB is an absolute joke of a major league, by far the most inept league in the land. And the yankees are the poster child for all that's wrong with baseball.

BIG, ACC, PAC12 Alliance • Aug 31, 2021 03:50 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I think it's kind of cool and creative. There's a charter school around here that has a blue field. Startling to see.

BIG, ACC, PAC12 Alliance • Aug 31, 2021 02:01 AM

I'd love Boise St. just for the blue football field.!th.jpeg ↗ image url)

BIG, ACC, PAC12 Alliance • Aug 31, 2021 01:59 AM

@FarmerJayhawk Tulane isn't a big TV market for basketball at all. They don't even know the sport exists in Louisiana. Not sure if Tulane would ever be competing for football players that would be good enough to make them a power 5 type school.

Not KU specific, but hoops nonetheless • Aug 31, 2021 01:53 AM

This is a great piece by someone at the SBNation page for Michigan St. Really strong piece of work here.

https://www.theonlycolors.com/2021/7/30/22563825/ncaa-men-basketball-top-60-teams-preseason-rankings-no-1-30 ↗

Of course I do like seeing our high ranking but I've got to take a bit of a wait and see on this one. The sour taste of last season is still fresh in my mouth and will only be washed away by a strong start to the season where we prove we deserve the high rankings.

Some of these guys are unknowns to me. Of the newcomers Remy Martin is the only one I trust to be as advertised. That doesn't mean the others won't produce I just don't have a ton of confidence that they will. I think the kid from Drake is my 2nd pick for new hawks to rock.

I'm really excited to see a year older Dajuan Harris pushing Agbaji for minutes in the backcourt. I'm also excited to see Yesufu and his untapped potential.

Hopefully Braun finds consistency, Big Dave finds a bit more toughness to match his massive frame, and Wilson makes the expected leap from enigmatic freshman to an overaged sophomore who's trying to show Michigan what they lost. Not sure Juwan Howard regretted Wilsons absence in his lineup.

BIG, ACC, PAC12 Alliance • Aug 29, 2021 09:00 PM

Maybe KU should become a basketball only school.
