Baylor rhymes with failure. They look great tonight, kudos to them. But with all of the talent this team has had every year this century, they've not even sniffed the final 4. They've made the elite 8 a couple of times but then get blown out. I'd love to get in the face of their ignorant fans and tell them to shut their mouths until they actually win something. But they won't. Scott can recruit, but coaching, he's a bit weak. Our weakest team in quite some time, really challenged them tonight. Made them sweat a bit. Screw Baylor.
@BeddieKU23 Tie! At least Iowa fans know their baske uh, wait no they don't they scream every time too.
@DanR If they're Baylor fans, and my wife affirms they are, then yes. Them too.
I'm not violent, but I'd love to punch every Baylor fan.
Michigan State isn't ranked either.
Update, he's down to 50%.
2nd in the NBA at 58% on 3 point percentage. Playing for the Rockets. 10-17.
I always tell you that I don't get nervous until the last minute. Paid off last night.....until the last minute.
This was a week of stormings. The nation's most hallowed space (AFH) was stormed twice this week. The 2nd most hallowed building fortunately only had to endure it once when a mob had a temper tantrum and thought it would be fun to terrorize and even kill those entrusted to its halls.
A week ago a horde of Longhorns came in shooting at will. The defenders of the Fieldhouse were powerless to stop the onslaught. The arbiters of the court were willing to look the other way as Longhorns violated the very basic principles of Naismith's laws just outside in the hallways of the venerable building. By the end of the day, the interlopers left triumphantly.
If there was a silver lining most of the witnesses were made of cardboard and just kept smiling throughout.
The nature of a college basketball schedule of course means that organized mobs of increasingly short shorted teens and otherwise those not yet old enough to imbibe will continue to invade the 94 feet of hardwood and attempt to assert control of the battle.
So for the 2nd time in a week there was a battle in Allen Field House. This is what George Martin said about it:
âA great battle is a terrible thing," the old knight said, "but in the midst of blood and carnage, there is sometimes also beauty, beauty that could break your heart.â
Yes, there was another great battle yesterday. While a week ago the battle was decidedly one sided, this time, like Joshuaâs men at Ai, they learned their lessons and were better prepared to face the onslaught. One of the hallmarks of Bill Selfâs coaching seemingly is to use a timeout in the first 4 minutes of a game. While over the last 36 minutes of games the Jayhawks are undoubtedly the greatest team in college basketball history. Yesterday after being unprepared for a Sooner invasion the boys in white regrouped. Coach Self reminded his troops of the words of Kansasâ own President Eisenhower: âWhat counts is not necessarily the size of the Jayhawk in the fight-itâs the size of the fight in the Jayhawkâ.
Sooner intelligence in the battle continually thwarted Jayhawk onslaughts intercepting passes intended to damage the defense of the maroon warriors. Abnormally tall soldiers swatted shots away. Fortunately, the defenders of the Field House were up for the challenge. It brings to mind the words of George Orwell who said âWe sleep peaceably in our beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.â
The battle dragged on. These Jayhawks were better equipped to handle those Sooners. Their general is a master at scrapping and clawing even as his soldiers donât have as advanced weapons as their foes. Itâs never easy against General Krueger. General Patton put it succinctly: âThe objective of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.â General Self would be making sure this would happen.
The defenders were magnificent. On both sides. The describer of the action was the wonderful Bill Raftery who didnât give out too many of his trademark âwhooosâ on successful sorties to the goal but instead at steals and swats and swipes. Garrett was all over. Dave swatted a shot so hard it symbolically signalled that these Jayhawks were going to emerge triumphant.
Speaking of Raftery, military observers noticed that the other reporter got noticeably more excited at the success of the underdog invaders, a common reaction to us partisans. You see weâre the superpower. Weâre the D-Day for every battalion that has designs of triumphing. So itâs understandable when the ascendent five retain hopes of triumphing.
As the final attempt at victory fell short, like so many others on this hellacious day, the words of Commodore Perry came to mind. âWe have met the enemy and they are ours.â
Thanks for the memory! We should do a KU Memories vid page. I love watching clips like that.
This reminds me of the junior high games I used to ref
Harris tries to posterize someone fails spectacularly.
Announcer yells for OU making basket. Wait, did they just win something?
I consider you all back door friends
"Enaruna who had a very impressive 1st half checks in". hmmm, ok.
This announcer screams every time OU scores, not Raftery, the other guy. Bill ought to tell him to shut up.
We may not score again
I haven't seen this many bad passes since Jay Cutler QB'd the Bears.
Who cares what coach K says?
We stinks
That was a bad call on the offensive foul against OU
@benshawks08 Yeah, and now he has 2
@Crimsonorblue22 Going 1 on 4 against our bigs isn't real bright.
I play basketball like a 5'10" Dave McCormack
@DanR That's like my posting theory. I don't let the facts get in the way of a good post!
I think one of the keys to a teams success in college is how quickly their managers can get those little stools with their logos on them set up at the timeout. When I was at a game at Northwestern two years ago Penn States managers were faster and PSU won. OU's were really fast on that last timeout. I'm scared.
Braun from the Beak
1 needs to shoot better than that
Wow someone called a carry. Cal got ejected the other day for a similar non-call that hurt his team. I actually felt sorry for Cal.
Enaruna stopped turning the corner on that three.
Shorter shorts with white leggings. just no.
We should start calling Mitch the Microwave
I really don't get worried until the last minute which worked to my benefit during the Texas game because it was too late to get worried when there was only 1 minute left.
Mitch is the automatic foul for officials who think they have to call something.
@BeddieKU23 The answer to what question?
Braun has some moxie whatever that means
Another announcer who think its called Phog Allen Field House.
@BeddieKU23 I think you're right. I don't think this is a Jayhawk juggernaut. They showed enough to hang with Gonzaga (I'm dismayed even writing such a line) but also struggled to put away NDS. Lesser teams have gone all the way so anything is possible, but this probably isn't the year.
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, I looked at the schedule, a little reprieve than it hits hard. I'm really looking forward to the Tennessee game as well. Then the last three games of the season, all ranked teams including Texas and Baylor.
The Jayhawks take the court in weird gray uniforms. Harris finds Ochai for a quick 3 point lead. Without Garrett Harris will be a key to a productive night for the Jayhawks who look to rebound from the Longhorn beatdown.
Nice little shove off leads to TCUâs first basket but BigDave answers with a baby hook.
Wilson sweet steal and a mystery whistle stops play.
Braun ill advised save leads to easy bucket for TCU. But then he nails one from near the Cowboys now empty til next year stadium.
BigDave nearly pulls down the goal like Sampson pulled down the temple of Dagan with all the Pagans inside. It was Dokish. Nice to see Dave with a positive shooting percentage.
Quick check of NC and Miami and all I hear is Dicky V talking. Unranked UNC that is. Weâre still watching on ESPNews. Hopefully they tell us when to switch over. MSU shouldnât be ranked but they are. Duke shouldnât be ranked but they are. KU best blueblood in the land, but of course didnât look like it v. Texas.
Fran talking about TCU like theyâre the blueblood in the building.
This writer is incredulous that TCU doesnât have a foul yet.
Mitch with the goaltend that isnât called. Ochai saying to Marcus, âDonât worry, I got thisâ.
Garrett needs some lessons on masks.
Mitch must have breathed on that guy for that whistle. Itâs one of those mystery fouls that happens early in a game so it doesnât seem big, but it will loom large later. Then an apparent mystery foul on a 3 pointer. I still have no clue what Harris did on that 3.
Makeup call puts Wilson on the line. What sucks about uneven referreeing is they sometimes call fouls on the other team to make up for it. Then we foul again and officially have foul trouble building.
Wilson going to have to keep playing big tonight.
Sometimes itâd be nice if you could decline a foul. And like in soccer, give refs the ability to say play on if a foul impedes a scoring opp for the offense.
Enaruna is from Europe so he ought to know what an own goal is and he just made one, then he get his own goal. I think he has some talent but he gets in his own way with dumb plays, and that was one of them.
2nd TV timeout
Enaruna has scored our last 5 and their last 2.
KU playing well. BigDave, best game so far, at least shooting wise.
Then we go brain dead, turn it over and Wilson commits a dumb foul and they get an and 1 which they convert on.
The foul count travesty continues. Amazingly Harris is the only 1 with 2 fouls.
11 point lead slips down to 4 after some really bad plays and some blind officials who donât see a guy kick the ball and who also donât see a guy roll over on the floor with the ball.
Self calls timeout.
Somehow TCU has 5 guys on the court with 0 fouls.
Wilson calms the storm. I wonder if that ball is a Wilson?
Harris with a nice play suddenly a 10 point lead again. Great timeout from Bill. Then Braun flushes it emphatically with a non called foul to boot.
After a painful game of offenseless basketball on Saturday this is a pleasure to watch. Wilson runângunân to a TCU timeout.
Big Dave been spectacular, Doke like! Then with a beautiful feed. No flagrant which the replay revealed was the right call, kind of.
Kudos to whomever had Enaruna as their Hawk to Rock.
Under 4 TO.
Quick stat check and KU is shooting well in all aspects, 3âs FTâs and on 2âs. Rebounding going well too. We need to avoid fouling this last 3:11 of the half and weâll be pretty good going into the 2nd half. Weâve gone over 6 minutes since picking up our 8th foul.
Air Lightfoot for the oop! Enaruna making believers of us. Heâs still young we must remember. But a silly TO means we donât score 50 this half.
Halftime. All in all, a nice half of KU basketball.
MSU going to hold Rutgers under 50 which is quite an accomplishment.
A few thoughts on our game. Always nice to see a half like that after the Saturday debacle. Best games of season so for Enaruna and BigDave. Ochaiâs hot start fueled this team to do what they just did.
I really applaud the team for their self will to stop fouling. None for the last 8:39 of the half when it looked like serious foul trouble was building up.
Misery. HaHa.
Scotty Pippen Junior? Superstars kids are never as good as their pops. Except Peyton Manning and Barry Bonds. But the best duo ever was Bobby Hull and Brett Hull.
Funny seeing Cal celebrating a win over lowly Vanderbilt.
College football has gotten so boring at itâs highest level. 5 or 6 teams have every recruiting advantage and will continue to harvest 5 star kids and so weâll continue to see only 5-7 different teams in the playoff every year. ZZZZZ
Every highlight they just showed had us scoring against #21 of TCU. Heâs big, but D aint his thing.
We should bust out these gray uniâs again.
Great to see a big shoot FTâs like that.
21 gonna have nightmares tonight about BigDave.
Iâm like Geez Wilson, thatâs an ugly 3 pointer. Instead itâs an alley oop.
The foul on KU was the first in the last 12 minutes of game clock.
21 Samuel their center has 0 rebounds and has given up a bucketload of points tonight.
Itâd be cool to see Harris get double digit assists.
Dumb announcers donât know that our offense doesnât really roll with Marcus Garrett.
Dixon TO.
When you make nearly 2/3rds of your shots itâs hard for the other team to get rebounds. ESPN has TCU with 12, CBS has them only with 9 rebounds.
Why on earth did we start at 9 PM?
The TCU defense is making us look really good.
17 minutes with only 1 foul against us until the Braun foul there.
Under 12 TO. 74-51
Big leads to sloppy play and then leaves a sourish taste in their mouths for the next game. Finish strong. Stop messing around. The last couple of minutes have been ugly.
Enaruna back to playing like crap. But he makes a fade away jumper to stop the mini run.
Iâm a little dismayed by some of the negative words directed at Mitch Lightfoot from some here earlier in the year.
Under 8 TO after Mitch forces a jump ball with a great play. Wouldnât it be great to see them jump em up after a tie up? The current rule works well for HS and below where there are lots of tie ups, but it doesnât happen that often in college and it would serve to reward good defense. Keep the alternate possession for certain scenarios like refs not sure who the ball goes out on and double fouls.
I keep going back to this stat, but weâve now gone 24 minutes and committed 2 fouls.
Getting annoyed with Enaruna playing loose. This is why he canât be relied on. Kudos to him for helping out when the game still hung in the balance, but these showboating plays the last few minutes have really irked me.
BigDave needs to do this every night. I know he wonât but he does. We need him to have some success going forward.
Iâm predicting a revenge victory in Austin next month.
Looking forward to seeing us against Rocky Top in Knoxville later this month.
4 screwing up our superb no fouling streak.
1 AKA short shorts with a nice drive.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant raining down from the upper reaches of the arena.
Shut up Fran, who cares about the Heismann?
93-64 Superb game. Not much drama.
Wilson statsheet stuffer 16 points, 7 RBâs 6 assists. Heâs my player of the game. Harris newcomer of the game. Enaruna bench player of the game even with having 3/8ths of our teams turnovers.
Well it's a reflection of how boring this site has become unfortunately.
@KirkIsMyHinrich It's ok, sometimes I read comments so much I miss the game. This is more relaxing.
Bill Self the master of the halftime adjustment. Need a big one today.
@KirkIsMyHinrich By one minute by my calculation
@stoptheflop Yes, thanks for stopping by the game thread that was started first!
Well, this is not the pleasant make fun of Texas halftime I was expecting. Guess I'll have to wait till the end of the game.
Garrett to finish the half is not the way I envisioned it ending.
Agbaji!
Wow, my tweet worked, they called a carry.
We can't make a shot today.
Refs are corrupt.
This lineup is going to get killed
Nice block Mitch!
