Anybody have an idea of our chances now that he decommitted from Indiana?

Mar 08, 2024 03:27 PM #2

@HoraceZontal better!

Mar 08, 2024 03:49 PM #3

@dylans ha! Good one!

Mar 08, 2024 04:34 PM #4

Would think a good shot since KU was the other finalist. He did say his recruitment was "wide open" but that's what they always say. It would be nice to land an elite shooter to this class that has improved a lot his Sr year.

@BShark you're such a tease!🤫

Mar 08, 2024 06:34 PM #11

I would think if s all the signs, posts seem to be saying then this recruitment wouldn't last very long.

It came down to KU/Indiana before & those were the ONLY TWO he took official. visits to, so you would think something will pop soon.

Of course you have some of the Indiana fan base saying Bill was still talking to him even after he had signed his NLI , insinuating Bill was tampering/ what a surprise.- -Others have just said Woodson has screwed the Pooch - -hasn't talked to McNeely since he committed and things like that.

Now I know it would be a total knee jerk move BUT could Indiana REFUSE to grant him release from his NLI ?

Mar 08, 2024 06:34 PM #12

@BShark so actually you were who I wanted to hear from in my initial post. Thanks for chiming in! And for the good news, fingers crossed

Mar 10, 2024 01:16 AM #13

Thank god Liam decommited from IU. Don't think there was a single net positive 3 point shooter in the recruiting class other than passmore and I'm not sure he can be relied upon immediately to contribute

@BShark ugh. We need good news. Any word on the MRI? Surely they don't have to wait til mon. I like our draw in the big 12. If we have to play a top 4 I'm glad it's Baylor. If we win our first game, of course.

Why did he pick Indiana in the first place? Close to home, coaches, family, $$$?

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but it’s my understanding they recruited him longer. Also his family loved their tradition. Like I’ve seen Indiana people say that his family’s favorite movie is Hoosiers.

@bskeet right I like Hoosiers as well but wouldn’t base my pick on a movie made in the 80s about a team in the 50s a highschool no less. Indiana isn’t crap I hope we don’t turn into them in the next couple of years.

Liam & Furphy at the 3-4 might save my sanity next year.

Mar 14, 2024 04:20 PM #40

@TYOHawk Will be funny to see the spacing if we have those two plus Hunter but pair them with KJ and Juan… causing screenshots of teams still not guarding those two so passing lanes, driving lanes and the ability to maneuver is yet again in shambles

Mar 14, 2024 06:35 PM #43

One thing about this recruitment to keep in mind is it had been hinging on Furphy going pro. That had seemed like a lock until more recently. I do wonder if that may complicate things.

Mar 14, 2024 07:13 PM #44

With the possibility of Furphy returning and possibly influencing Liam's decision - --Why couldn't Liam play the 3 and Furphy the 4 ?- -or visa versa. --Furphy decent shooter -adaquate rebounder , Liam good shooter, ok rebounder, don't see why they couldn't make it work.

I understand any potential apprehension..but I truly think those two could play together.

Mar 14, 2024 08:53 PM #46

A wing that can handle, shoot, and play the 4 is right up there with an elite scoring guard on the shopping list this year. I don’t have total clarity on whether McNeeley is that dude or they want more of a bench sniper role for him (my guess is the latter) but there are always various scenarios that will play out from now until the draft.

Who didn't see this coming - - -As soon as he asked for his release , supposedly it came down to KU ? Indiana originally. If he was truly that serious about KU - - Indiana no longer his choice should of been automatic, no reason to screw around just come out- --say I'm going to KU. - -Period.

Nike is in deep and look out Kentucky , U Conn , Houston and big others have been talking to him -- he says he is keeping his options open - -duh - -ya think ?- all we heard he is a lock , a lock pssst until he is on campus, far from a lock. Bill will get his playes but like is being said now hearing not looking like he lands he - far from a lock

Mar 18, 2024 08:08 PM #57

We'll see what happens here but it seems like McNeeley's camp wants guarantees we won't give in terms of role. Like sorry bud if Furphy comes back and we land a stud wing in the portal you aren't starting

It's a very abrupt change of messaging from the confidence getting put out shortly after the commitment. I find it hard to believe we'd back off given the brutal shooting struggles we witnessed this season

Mar 19, 2024 02:40 AM #62

You guys can be homers to this and drink the tea coming out of Naismith drive but it is Ingram all over again.

We can play mcneely and furphy next to each other and still have the stud 2 guard portal pickup.

Why on earth would we be lacking minutes for him….hmm let’s think for two seconds here who plays the 4 spot that I’ve said is GUARANTEED to start next year

U guys are blind to how Self works

Mar 19, 2024 03:11 AM #63

@rcjhdraft - There have been a number of players who shot well the prior year but come to KU and …. don’t. No guarantees.

@Gorilla72 said in Liam McNeeley:

Need to keep taking chances on shooters despite potential fails like Timberlake. I believe in Liam's body of work far more than I did Timberlakes but I also believe that Timberlake and furphy had to shoot with a ton of pressure since they were the only floor spacers on the entire roster.

Mar 19, 2024 12:36 PM #65

I will never really fault coach for not giving a player a guarantee they will start. Sell in a role for them, yes. Say we have a spot that is theirs for the taking, sure. But if a someone thinks that they don't need to perform day in and out to get minutes, than they are going to cause problems for the program eventually.

Mar 19, 2024 02:48 PM #66

@MR11 Does this only apply to incoming recruits or current players in the program? We have two that are absolutely cemented for next year so curious your post with regards to that.

Correct - -what ever happened to the dys where you EARNED you spot on the floor. You just don't walk in with the approach well these guys need me so if they need me I'M STARTING ?

Mar 19, 2024 04:18 PM #68

@jayballer67

Players have more leverage then ever, can leave whenever, make demands now and not just role, $$$$$$.

Hopefully this all works out in KU's favor in the end but this is definitely a typical recruitment these days if it's really open

Mar 19, 2024 04:25 PM #69

@MR11 I agree.

Speaking from strictly optics (because I don't have any inside info or know anything about the agreement), the one time it appeared that coach had guaranteed starting and a position was Josh Selby. As I recall, throughout the season, it looked like he wasn't ready for primetime, but he played (and then left prematurely).

Since then, I haven't seen any player's position/PT look the same (playing and performance grossly misaligned).

There are some freshmen and transfers who have come in and started and played in that position all year (most recent freshmen: Grady Dick; most recent transfer, Hunter) but in all recent cases, the performance totally justifies the position/PT.

BTW, I give huge props to ElMarko because he moved from starting to backup (so, clearly, no guarantee), but he continues to play hard and I think has a big ceiling. I don't know if I'm in the minority, but I hope he stays. I think he'll be a successful Jayhawk in a year or maybe two in Self's system.

agree, this dam portal and the volume of NIL $ $ $ wise has done in College sports

Mar 19, 2024 05:57 PM #71

NIL $$$$$ vs guaranteed playing time. 🤔 KU has great NIL, but some guys think “one and done” is more important. Decisions, decisions. “Can I play myself into a guaranteed starting role AND leave after a year?”

Mar 19, 2024 06:35 PM #72

I guess my stance would be why does being a previous years starter on the 6th best big 12 team mean you have a guaranteed spot for next year?

If no spot is guaranteed to new recruits why is it guaranteed to guys in the program. Just because you are in the program a year prior shouldn’t mean you get the nod automatically.
