Tomorrow, we get a real test in Ames.

I encourage those who oft wear black hats to remember, this is a battle and not the war. What great progress have we seen? Surely a regression against a good team in some areas on the road would be expected.

Still, with the emergence of Shak as a strong contributor, if he is healthy, and we can hit 30% of our 3s and 70% at the line, we can certainly win this one.

Jan 14, 2025 06:32 PM #2

I'd say we've had plenty of real tests already!
A cake walk would be nice :)
If you have any superpowers @approxinfinity , now's the time to use em!

Jan 14, 2025 06:35 PM #3

I sure hope Hunter, Flory and KJ score and score often in the paint. RC

Jan 14, 2025 07:21 PM #4

I'm sorry I really am , but just trying to be honest & realistic. I don't have a very good feel about tomorrow night & that's not a knock against the guys , I think we will play hard and fight but bottom line I just think they are better then us THIS YEAR. -They are like us many years , they are just really good. You never know which one or whatever is going to be the one who lights it up for them on any particular night.

Like I mentioned yesterday, we are going to have to match their defensive intensity for a full 40 minutes and find quick open perimeter looks/shots. Jefferson pretty good , got a good pg- - they have the guy that comes off the bench that actually is their leading Scorer -a lot of weapons. We got to take care of the ball & hit the glass.- -We have to make a better percentage of hitting our shots from distance. -I hope I'm wrong about this feeling , I hope I'm dead wrong just RIGHT NOW as of this moment , at this time of day I just feel like could be a 6-7 point L - Hell I'll do anything if I am- -- I'll dance naked in the rain if we win even lol - -ROCK CHALK

@stoptheflop
Especially Hunter he needs 20 in this game.
Flory needs 8.
KJ needs 10.
Zeke needs 20 also.
We have to make them guard all our guards. They will clog the lane as everyone else has. Coit will shoot from three he always does. Moore needs to make a couple and drive for floaters, Zeke needs to make a couple and get to the rack. Storr needs to make one and go at it hard and keep drawing fouls. Shak needs to make one and drive it with his speed. Juan has to make one and drive and dish and drive for his floater or reverse scoop layup. We need one or two more treys one for Hunter because he will be played rough and he will play rough but will get calls against him. He will get pissed and a pissed Hunter will make one or two threes just to show the Cyclones and the refs the finger. That will be nine treys which will get us in the upper 70's and a 5 point win.
Do not and I mean don't get below 35 in the first half. We need to be tied all game. We actually get more offensive rebounds than they do. Zeke is surprisingly adept at putting back his misses. it would be nice if Flory has a breakout game and help Hunter control the defensive boards. I can see KJ and Hunter and Flory sitting out with two fouls and three fouls but hopefully not at the same time. Hunter our potential AA needs to hit all of his little jumpers.
Can our suddenly vaunted defense actually hold ISU to 70 points while our offense gets after it until they are scorching the nets.
If they are just better than us like faster, tougher, more energized and better shooters okay but if we are equal, as tough and as energized we can over come the noise and maybe some bad calls. When we beat up UCF on the road we saw what this team can do and if AJ, Moore and Shak can stun the Cyclones with their breakout games. I know it's coming and we can ride it all the way to a one seed.

Jan 14, 2025 07:58 PM #6

It’s always the same equation for us in Ames…. Can we take care of the ball? Hilton is a tough venue and if we start this game with turnovers and fall behind the temperature in Hilton rises from screaming fans and becomes easy for them to roll us! If we keep it to around 10 total turnovers in the game, we stand a chance. We need to keep Hunter in the low post and space properly.

Jan 14, 2025 08:51 PM #7

Yeah i am not bullish on Hunter from 3 more than once in a blue moon, as a trailer, and with Bidunga already on the low block.

I want 20+ minutes for Flory. Keeping out of early foul trouble will be key.

As i said during last game, thought we looked good with Hunt out second half and KJ and Bidunga pairing. Its when we got to double digits.

Dajuan, Shak, hot scorer, KJ and Bidunga is a really good defensive core.

Jan 14, 2025 09:24 PM #8

At least we didn't give up any offensive magic last game. Due for a little regression back to average on that end. Hopefully, these guys have really bought in to the idea that defense travels.

Jan 14, 2025 11:38 PM #9

I'm really hopeful this bunch rises to the occasion. They know it's a big game. If ISU guards them straight up and doesn't change their style to sag off Juan and KJ I think they can win this game.

Gotta score points, make enough 3's to keep the gameplan honest. Push the pace and never stop attacking the basket. Only way to overcome the crowd and what will be a biased ref crew will be forcing them to actually call fouls.
On defense we just need to limit foul trouble in the post and keep Gilbert away from the FT line. I'm hoping Shak gets that assignment to take the head off the snake. Rebound and stay in it.

Should be a good game, i hope. These kind of games are what Self lives for

Jan 15, 2025 12:49 AM #10

If KU somehow wins going away I'll be bouncing off the walls. If it's played closely (5 points either way-ish) I'll feel about the same as I do now that this is a good team. If Iowa State wins in a blowout that would be fairly concerning.

Jan 15, 2025 01:02 AM #11

I’m honestly less worried about these type of games. We seem to bring our A game when the situation calls for it. It the games when we are playing less competition like WV or Fizzou we have zero energy.

Jan 15, 2025 02:02 AM #12

Yea, weird. The energy part makes no sense to me. It’s very evident at times though. How can guys not be fired up to play? KU needs a Flavor Flav hype man. Yeah Boyeeee!

Jan 15, 2025 04:45 AM #13

Last year I think we'd all agree was one of our weaker teams and we went up to Ames and were down 2 with a minute to go. Lost by 4. We've had some bad in Hilton I agree but last year wasn't so bad. We've been a little shell shocked by some epic routs in the latter part of the Self era therefore there's some pessimism for tomorrows game. We've won 8 out of 10 against them. But lost 2 of the last 3. I feel decent about this one.

Jan 15, 2025 01:02 PM #14

@wissox we need Zeke to Channel his inner Elijah Johnson 2013 up there lol

Jan 15, 2025 01:02 PM #15

Ugh, 6.5 dogs to ISt. Ames is my favorite place to win. AFH East. Please, please, please defend their guards and look to score in the paint. KU does have an advantage with our bigs. Come on Hunter, show some energy; dunk the damn ball!

Jan 15, 2025 01:14 PM #16

This is exactly where I’m at. Expecting us to lose a close game 4-8 points but it’s tight until a few free throws late. Will be fun to watch with this expectation.

If this team is actually closer to 2020 and 2022 as people are saying per the ā€œmetricsā€ than they should go win this one.

Isu has better guard and their bigs are more mobile. They run pnr a lot so we will see if Hunter can adjust at all or if Flory needs to get more minutes.

Hope Shak and Rylan both play 25+ minutes tonight

Jan 15, 2025 02:13 PM #17

@rockchalkjayhawk

Maybe Moore! He seems to want to cheerlead these guys!

Jan 15, 2025 04:48 PM #18

Momcilovic is likely OUT tonight and for another 5+ weeks with an injury.

Jan 15, 2025 04:52 PM #19

@BShark Oh no one wins without Mom. I'm upping my prediction now. 69-60.

Big time floor spacer. Indications are he broke some finger(s) in his non-shooting hand.

Jan 15, 2025 04:56 PM #22

@BShark

Not sure Vegas will react to that but that's worth several points.

Jan 15, 2025 05:41 PM #23

Mom was the one guy on that roster las year i wish we had

Yes, has started 14 games.

Jan 15, 2025 06:33 PM #26

?s=46

It's official now (ISU reporter tweet here)

Jan 15, 2025 06:52 PM #27

This basically puts ISU at 7 deep and their two bench players are 4 ppg types.

Jan 15, 2025 06:59 PM #28

Still, we have to play a near perfect game to win this one. All their guards will be automatic from 3 if we leave them evem a little open.

Jan 15, 2025 07:20 PM #29

Ox knows how to play this. They will be even a tougher out without Momci.

@Jhawk69 said in Looking forward to Hilton:

That's just not true though? They shoot it 1% better than KU and just lost, by far, their best shooter. They also rate 253rd in threes attempted per game, KU is 271st for reference. This game will be won or lost inside and we need to not commit fouls (their guards are quite good at drawing them).

Jan 15, 2025 07:52 PM #31

@BShark That is all true, but I think they will rain threes against us.

Jan 15, 2025 08:03 PM #32

@Jhawk69 It would be a big contrast to how they normally play. I'm mostly hoping that foul trouble doesn't lead to more Diggy minutes than normal. Feel like both teams will come out juiced.

Jan 15, 2025 08:04 PM #33

@BShark guards drawing fouls doesn't bode well for Flory high minutes, hopefully KJ brings it today if that is the case

Jan 15, 2025 08:14 PM #34

We are going to have to have Rylan or AJ show up tonight for sure we need that additional Scorer tonight right now other then Zeke we don't have that outside consistent threat, s U really like what Shaq has added brought this team to a different look, at least he does have the tools to score some instead of just another passer.

The thing I'm afraid of is Jefferson is going to neutralize at least enough Hunter that's going to be an issue. If we can have a night where we can get either or Rylan or AJ to be productive enough that would be sweet.- -We are going to have to play a full forty minutes, can not afford any 2-3-4 minute -- droughts - -be on the Hunter watch for foul trouble their Bigs pretty athletic - got to crash the boards and keep them off no 2nd- - 3rd chances , just can't have it

Jan 15, 2025 09:01 PM #35

Hunter with 20 and the two shots he takes from the arc which he can make one or both will be a boost. Can Juan, Zeke and Shak contain their guards? Maybe and depends who they each guard. Just slowing them down will be enough.

Jan 15, 2025 09:17 PM #36

@Zabudda Hunter will attempt about 20 shots. He will make 7-8 of them. He will also be in position for about 20 rebounds, he will come down with about 12 of them and be outhustled by smaller ISU forwards for the other 8. He will finish with something like 18 points and 12 rebounds but will be largely ineffective. To make up for that, Mayo and Harris will have to shine and Rylan will need to knock down some threes.

Jan 15, 2025 09:18 PM #37

Isn't their 6th man their high pt guy?

Jan 15, 2025 09:21 PM #38

They may zone us up, keep them out of foul trouble.

Jan 15, 2025 10:42 PM #39

Now that it has enough possessions together to qualify, K. Adams / H. Dickinson / D. Harris / Z. Mayo / S. Moore is our BEST 5 man group so far. Swapping in Rylan for Shak is just behind that one.

Jan 15, 2025 11:15 PM #40

@Jhawk69

Hunter shooting threes is just another look to get the lane congestion smaller. He's shooting at 25% and we have seen him make a couple and he started the season shooting 50% from the free throw line and now he is at 75% plus he's a good passer and can drive as evidenced in the last game. If Flory is playing with him he rebounding success improves. We've got a bunch of midgets who have figured out it's a good idea to drive into the lane and those misses are easier to anticipate than threes which bounce way off. Zeke is a good at rebounding and if our shots get blocked it's as likely to come back to us as not.

Jan 15, 2025 11:18 PM #41

Do you like the earlier start at 6:00?

Jan 15, 2025 11:29 PM #42

I like Hawks being prime time but now with the collapse of the PAC maybe we can be the West Coasts team in the 9 slot

Jan 15, 2025 11:35 PM #43

@Zabudda

7 for me and yes since I go into work for around 5 am

Jan 15, 2025 11:43 PM #46

Jan 15, 2025 11:45 PM #47

Those are the kind of dumb misses that hurt us later

Jan 15, 2025 11:46 PM #48

Jan 15, 2025 11:47 PM #49

I think ISt's coach wants to win this. Jeez he's a maniac on the sideline

Jan 15, 2025 11:48 PM #50

Missed bunny and 3 sloppy TOs...

Jan 15, 2025 11:48 PM #51

Fans are too dumb to recognize a travel call is the right call.

Jan 15, 2025 11:49 PM #52

We'd be winning if it weren't for dumb plays on offense. Got +2 on fouls in that first sequence and from guards.

Jan 15, 2025 11:51 PM #55

@BeddieKU23 Yeah I just saw them foul us obviously and fans in the stands standing with arms raised like they've just been victimized by Jack the Ripper

Nice tackle KJ

Jan 15, 2025 11:55 PM #57

Jan 15, 2025 11:56 PM #59

Or make a shot or 2

Jan 15, 2025 11:56 PM #60

Sad ref. It's a foul, you're right there and just blind

Jan 15, 2025 11:58 PM #61

Jan 15, 2025 11:59 PM #63

Jan 15, 2025 11:59 PM #64

Nice play Juan to mayo

Jan 16, 2025 12:00 AM #65

ESPN for a decade now thinks we love seeing a split screen. I don't want to see Bill Self even talking to a player. I want full screen. How dumb are they?

Jan 16, 2025 12:01 AM #66

@wissox

Even better when they go full screen to talk about something or someone and miss actual gameplay.

Jan 16, 2025 12:02 AM #67

Iowa St doesn't seem like they have any offense so far. If we could just figure it out on offense at some point this one could go our way

Jan 16, 2025 12:02 AM #68

The only split screen I liked was coach k riding off into the sunset(lol) after his last loss w/his wife.

Jan 16, 2025 12:03 AM #69

And just like that espn misses a score

Jan 16, 2025 12:04 AM #70

Jan 16, 2025 12:06 AM #75

Jan 16, 2025 12:06 AM #76

Jan 16, 2025 12:06 AM #77

Adams is big time at the line this yr

Jan 16, 2025 12:07 AM #78

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #81

That ref is bullshit

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #82

Stupid TO’s.

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #83

6 TOs , ugh

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #84

Apart from the bad TOs, they are moving the ball a lot better and getting much better looks...

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #85

And again. Travel and calls a foul. PAID

Jan 16, 2025 12:08 AM #86

We are getting almost nothing in the paint...

Jan 16, 2025 12:36 AM #154

@SlimShaddy54 Jones is 8/11 and 4/5 from 3

Jan 16, 2025 12:36 AM #155

Dajuan stinks

Jan 16, 2025 12:36 AM #156

Has Shaq been playing ?-- -haven't heard much on him, put him on Joned, Bigger frame to guard -- better defender

Jan 16, 2025 12:36 AM #157

I feel like a loss here and we are all but done in the conference

Jan 16, 2025 12:37 AM #158

@kjayhawks bit of a stretch

Jan 16, 2025 12:37 AM #159

Remember at the end of last year Self sat there and said there will never be another year like this well seems he was wrong.

Jan 16, 2025 12:37 AM #160

@SlimShaddy54 Shak only played 9 minutes. Not sure why he didn't play more.

Jan 16, 2025 12:37 AM #161

@kjayhawks huh? They’re ranked higher than we are

Jan 16, 2025 12:38 AM #162

Dajuan, Shak, Mayo, KJ, Flory. This is the way.

Jan 16, 2025 12:38 AM #163

@DCHawker doesn't help when Dickinson goes right out and gets in foul trouble. - -This is one of those games, where their big's are quicker more athletic Dickinson is no good in a fast pace , hectic style game--- to slow

Jan 16, 2025 12:39 AM #164

@patoh3 foul trouble

Jan 16, 2025 12:39 AM #165

Every bounce and unexpected luck went to ISU. We worked our ass off and it blew up in our face. Jones has the worst shot set up I've ever seen. They fumble bumbled around and a miracle happened. Three big treys by Juan, Griffen and Mayo that keep us in touch wasted.

Jan 16, 2025 12:39 AM #166

Remember when Self sat there at the end of last year and said this will never happen again, well it seems like little has changed

Jan 16, 2025 12:41 AM #167

@Crimsonorblue22 I know he had foul trouble, but when he is on the floor, he is out of sorts. That is what I was asking.

Jan 16, 2025 12:41 AM #168

We need to the ball to go in the hoop. Defense notthe issue. 20 points in a half isn’t winning anything.

Take care of the ball this half and we can win. I’d play a lot more guards.

Jan 16, 2025 12:41 AM #169

@dmurban welcome to the board!

Jan 16, 2025 12:41 AM #170

Well it will be a hard task to come back by 10.

Jan 16, 2025 12:41 AM #171

@patoh3 afraid to get his 3rd?

Jan 16, 2025 12:42 AM #172

@StLJhawk already 2 losses tho

Jan 16, 2025 12:42 AM #173

Coit played 1 minute. Would like to see more.

Jan 16, 2025 12:42 AM #174

@dmurban said in Looking forward to Hilton:

What specifically is happening? This years team smokes last years team.

Jan 16, 2025 12:42 AM #175

It's not the end of the world and let us see who steps up.

Jan 16, 2025 12:44 AM #176

All those defensive metrics and great second half’s against bad teams….

Let’s see if we can flip a switch and shut them down defensively this half

Jan 16, 2025 12:44 AM #177

@Crimsonorblue22 On the offensive side? I think their in-your-face pesky defense has him off kilter more than usual.

Jan 16, 2025 12:45 AM #178

KJ and Hunt have to stop over helping, 3 wide open dunks because if it

Jan 16, 2025 12:47 AM #179

I'm afraid it's about to get really ugly

Jan 16, 2025 12:48 AM #180

@SlimShaddy54 My sister didn’t tell me she was going to the game.

Jan 16, 2025 12:49 AM #181

@Kcmatt7 that’s probably true. Just feels very similar. Zeke has been our saving grace. We have gotten little from two highly touted transfers, Hunter looks less athletic and more lazy this year and Harris will still never shoot the ball. Having a dawg for point was always Kansas to me with Chambers, Collins, Mason, Graham and Dotson. No one cares if half the starters shoot

Jan 16, 2025 12:49 AM #182

@patoh3 LOL

Jan 16, 2025 12:49 AM #183

They've out shot us, out rebounded us, and out hustled us. Need to do better on both ends...

Jan 16, 2025 12:49 AM #184

Nvm we suck

Jan 16, 2025 12:49 AM #185

Right off the bat - - another turnover

Jan 16, 2025 12:50 AM #186

Please Hunt foul out

Jan 16, 2025 12:50 AM #187

Another turnover

Jan 16, 2025 12:50 AM #188

Please foul out

Jan 16, 2025 12:51 AM #189

Oof, lookin like a rout

Jan 16, 2025 12:51 AM #190

@kjayhawks Same trash for 2 years defensively - giving up easy baskets which Self claims he hates yet he doesn’t adjust or sit guys

D2 getting dominated tonight but plays 40 minutes cause it’s a big game and Bill trusts him

Griffin looks alright makes 1 mistake and he’s out

D2 losses the ball to the big guy for a three cause he plays with zero urgency

Jan 16, 2025 12:51 AM #191

We can't get into any kind of offensive set...

Jan 16, 2025 12:51 AM #192

@StLJhawk as expected

Jan 16, 2025 12:52 AM #193

@SlimShaddy54 d2 playing legit top 5 d1 team tonight and shockingly this is it

Go figure this core 3 on the road against a legit team still isn’t good enough

Self can’t evaluate talent worth trash

Jan 16, 2025 12:52 AM #194

@DCHawker check the pg for that one…..

Jan 16, 2025 12:53 AM #195

Nice job mayo. Sittrr

Jan 16, 2025 12:54 AM #196

Would you mind if i coin your excessive pessimism as ā€œhyturdboleā€ @kuballin10 ?

Jan 16, 2025 12:54 AM #197

Hunts passes

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 AM #198

@approxinfinity lol. Lovin the block feature

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 AM #199

Kill him!

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 AM #200

Wolp. Flory and Hunt time

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 AM #201

Oh boy, KJ looks like he's done for a bit.

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 AM #202

Collarbone?

Jan 16, 2025 12:56 AM #203

That or AC sprain.

Jan 16, 2025 12:56 AM #204

Where is the helments ?- - Where is the flags ?

Jan 16, 2025 12:56 AM #205

Anything that forced Bill to play Bidunga increases our chances of a win. Sorry KJ.

Jan 16, 2025 12:57 AM #206

@approxinfinity not arguing in this game but we need kj

Jan 16, 2025 12:57 AM #207

Iowa state is tenacious and dogs on defense but still prioritizes offense

KU is Self with our defense that isn’t good against top teams and we ā€œlaborā€ yet again year over year to score

Didn’t he say after last years blowout this wouldn’t happen again?

Rs32 @$$ whoopin incoming

Jan 16, 2025 12:57 AM #208

Does this bode better for Griff or AJ?

Jan 16, 2025 12:58 AM #212

ISU only scored 2 in 4+ minutes, so we are on same 2nd have defensive pace as last two games!

Jan 16, 2025 12:58 AM #213

Hunts body language is kinda sad tonight

Shoulder issues for life

Jan 16, 2025 12:58 AM #215

Hunter is flat awful, but maybe with Bidunga playing D for him Hunter can stop trying to move on that end of the court

Jan 16, 2025 12:59 AM #216

Wait, how in the heck is that their ball?

Jan 16, 2025 12:59 AM #217

I predicted kj, hunt and Harris 3 turnovers each because isu is great defensively (unlike us but you all lapped it up against bad teams)

Hunter, Harris, and Mayo have 3 turnovers each. 9 of our 13. Kj was about there until his injury which sucks

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #218

Good job Flory!

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #219

Just dont pass the bsll anywhere but out Hunt. Dont play d. Just be a giant trebuche on the offensive end

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #220

If bill grows a beard I’m going to have to grow one to keep up my streak of three times a year people asking if I’m bill self

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #221

Nuther crap pass by hunt

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #222

@StLJhawk He’s never been a winner anywhere he’s gone

Nobody on the staff did their homework for this one just glanced at some stats

I could build a better roster than this crap

Shut the fuck up and take the negative shit out of here. Why are you even still a KU fan at this point?

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 AM #224

@kuballin10 yeah but the thing is we are on a run right now while you swear we will get blown out.

Jan 16, 2025 01:01 AM #225

Got back into this

Jan 16, 2025 01:01 AM #226

3 pt game, so much for my rout theory. I love being wrong when I’m negative

Jan 16, 2025 01:01 AM #227

These stupid turnovers....

Jan 16, 2025 01:01 AM #228

@approxinfinity let moore run point and it changes things

Jan 16, 2025 01:02 AM #229

Lucky!

Jan 16, 2025 01:02 AM #231

Coit

Jan 16, 2025 01:02 AM #232

16 TOs - incredible...

Jan 16, 2025 01:02 AM #233

Shak has no business passing the ball to Bidungas waist in transition

Jan 16, 2025 01:02 AM #234

Jan 16, 2025 01:03 AM #238

Jan 16, 2025 01:04 AM #240

Jan 16, 2025 01:05 AM #241

Jan 16, 2025 01:05 AM #242

We have so many balls fall off the rim.

Jan 16, 2025 01:05 AM #243

@DCHawker Roster construction plus offensive philosophy

Jan 16, 2025 01:05 AM #244

Struggling on layups tonight.

Jan 16, 2025 01:06 AM #245

I love possessions where we get a bad shot with no passes

Jan 16, 2025 01:06 AM #246

So ugly

Jan 16, 2025 01:07 AM #247

Weird that Juan and Griffen are our second leading scorers at this point...

Jan 16, 2025 01:07 AM #248

@DCHawker Iowa State right there with us with 14

Jan 16, 2025 01:08 AM #249

One Big Difference- - Dickinson getting nothing what 4 points ?

Jan 16, 2025 01:08 AM #250

Really dont understand putting KJ back in for Bidunga. To the point of being a little irritated about it. Hunt is absolutely useless without Flory next to him in this game

Jan 16, 2025 01:10 AM #251

Nice set play for Shak.

Jan 16, 2025 01:10 AM #252

2-3, hm

Jan 16, 2025 01:11 AM #253

Jan 16, 2025 01:13 AM #255

Jan 16, 2025 01:13 AM #256

pass that Harris

Jan 16, 2025 01:14 AM #257

DaJuan bad at the line today.

Jan 16, 2025 01:14 AM #258

We're 2-5 at the "charity" stripe...

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #259

@wissox ya 86 % on the year , and in Crunch time tonight - -- BOINK

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #260

Griffin hasn’t played one minute this half

He and storr are pissed but especially Rylan….bams looks nice now

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #261

DJ - 3 missed FTs all year… tonight 3 misses. Go figure

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #262

Flory got 4 blocks tonight, 8 as a team.

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #263

ccould of cut it to four- - putting some pressure on them

Jan 16, 2025 01:15 AM #264

Held them to 11 so far this half... let's go boys!

Jan 16, 2025 01:16 AM #265

@SlimShaddy54 but he’s a national champ and clutch right? That’s what Self tells us

Jan 16, 2025 01:16 AM #266

We have 16 turnovers. Is that good?

Jan 16, 2025 01:16 AM #267

@wissox sits bench for kj as @approxinfinity and I lose our minds at bills @$$ rotations

Jan 16, 2025 01:16 AM #268

@wissox great with a 24 year old pg!

Jan 16, 2025 01:17 AM #269

Which player is going to step up? I think Mayo or Little Shaq

Jan 16, 2025 01:17 AM #270

Dajuan, Moore, x, Flory and x wins this

Jan 16, 2025 01:17 AM #271

0-4 Juan.

Jan 16, 2025 01:18 AM #272

not Harris apparently

Jan 16, 2025 01:19 AM #273

Hunt stuffed at the rim ugh

Jan 16, 2025 01:19 AM #274

Could we please make a basket?

Jan 16, 2025 01:19 AM #275

Time running out

Jan 16, 2025 01:19 AM #276

Hunter is going to dominate his local YMCA next year

Jan 16, 2025 01:19 AM #277

@StLJhawk for being 7+ feet, his shot gets blocked more than I would think.

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #278

@StLJhawk Not hard to block the shot off a two inch explosion

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #279

@patoh3 sloooow

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #280

Please put Flory in. Please. Please.

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #281

Moore so much better than Juan and it’s not even close

Defensively he’s what Self thinks d2 is and offensively he impacts the game with how he attacks while not scoring.

Self’s sawwffffttt

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #282

Not sure how Self can put these same five back out there

Jan 16, 2025 01:20 AM #283

This was always penciled in as a loss. So I’m not sweating.

I think the biggest issue is we aren’t running enough through Mayo.

Jan 16, 2025 01:21 AM #284

@dylans I did call him sloth-like earlier this season.

Jan 16, 2025 01:21 AM #285

@Kcmatt7 this game was/is totally winnable

Jan 16, 2025 01:21 AM #286

Mayo being off is not good. This team doesn’t shoot very well. Rylan needs to get going to take pressure off Mayo. But that’s a tough ask tonight.

Jan 16, 2025 01:22 AM #287

Moore needs to be on the floor as much as possible-- just a big difference with him on the floor

Jan 16, 2025 01:22 AM #288

@patoh3 i prefer upright ferret for Hunters spirit animal

Jan 16, 2025 01:22 AM #289

@Kcmatt7 but I agree about not using mayo more. Every time Juando goes opposite way, I just think, WTF

Jan 16, 2025 01:22 AM #290

Hunt and KJ 4-15...

Jan 16, 2025 01:23 AM #291

@approxinfinity That could explain the difficulty in running on 2 feetšŸ˜‚

Jan 16, 2025 01:23 AM #292

As much as we might try to find others to blame , once again Dickinson ha done nothing - -6 points

Jan 16, 2025 01:23 AM #293

Nope, no Bidunga.

Jan 16, 2025 01:23 AM #294

Otzelberger seems to be moving up from the 132lb to heavyweight wrestling class

Jan 16, 2025 01:24 AM #295

Yeah not the end of the world, just disappointing. We could have won this.

Jan 16, 2025 01:26 AM #301

@dylans Anytime Dickinson comes up against a quality big and can be physical with hunter - -he wet all over himself

Jan 16, 2025 01:26 AM #302

Jan 16, 2025 01:26 AM #303

@SlimShaddy54 and who steps up in his absence?

Jan 16, 2025 01:26 AM #304

AJ with a block - - Griffin with key bucket -- -hmmmm

Jan 16, 2025 01:27 AM #305

fresh legs

Jan 16, 2025 01:27 AM #306

9 point game - 9 point difference at the FT line...

Jan 16, 2025 01:34 AM #345

@Kcmatt7 AJ Storr, Hunter Dickinson and … Bill Self?

Jan 16, 2025 01:35 AM #346

Bill didn’t even wait for the under 4 timeout

Jan 16, 2025 01:35 AM #347

I’m cracked fellas. Just wanted to win this one bad. This isnt a player regression. Its a stubborn ass coach.

Jan 16, 2025 01:36 AM #348

we hit our free throws and Hunter do ANYTHING and this game would be in our favor

Jan 16, 2025 01:36 AM #349

Why is Coit is still out there?

Jan 16, 2025 01:37 AM #350

@Texas-Hawk-10 its like this is a rec game and Bill realized he needed to give Coit more minutes

Jan 16, 2025 01:37 AM #351

what else would that have been other than a held ball? Cyclowns.

Jan 16, 2025 01:38 AM #352

AJ played aggressive defense until the foul.

Jan 16, 2025 01:38 AM #353

phantom foul

Jan 16, 2025 01:38 AM #354

AJ Storr plays the same defense as middle schoolers.

Jan 16, 2025 01:38 AM #355

Weak call

Jan 16, 2025 01:39 AM #356

Hunters lack of hustle is glaring today.

Jan 16, 2025 01:39 AM #357

Can't have five guys out there not knowing how to run the offense and expect to win at this point. Gross.

Jan 16, 2025 01:40 AM #358

Bilas right - we have gotten beat to most of the loose balls...

Iowa St just quicker to the loose balls

Jan 16, 2025 01:40 AM #361

wild passes no plan

Jan 16, 2025 01:40 AM #362

Storr must have a sky high usage rate. Black hole

Over 30% last season.

Jan 16, 2025 01:41 AM #365

That's just how AJ Storr plays offense.

Jan 16, 2025 01:41 AM #366

Iowa St going to end up parading to the line make this game score look worse yet then it was

Jan 16, 2025 01:42 AM #367

Actually have more FGs and FG%, but huge difference at the FT line and getting beat on the boards...

Jan 16, 2025 01:42 AM #368

that about wraps up how how this game went the entire night

Jan 16, 2025 01:42 AM #369

Five guard lineup stinks

Jan 16, 2025 01:44 AM #370

Dickinson should of just stayed home

Jan 16, 2025 01:44 AM #371

@DanR said in Looking forward to Hilton:

Because 3 of those 5 are shit defenders.

3 of Harris, Moore, Adams, and Flory need to be on the floor for the defense to be its most effective.

Jan 16, 2025 01:44 AM #372

Well, that was a rough one. We kept staying close and then kept doing stupid stuff.

Jan 16, 2025 01:44 AM #373

This team just is mid af. Talent is there. This is a Bill Self problem

Jan 16, 2025 01:45 AM #374

Give the clowns some credit. They usually fold. Unfortunately, this KU team has no beast mode.

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #375

I told you guys. Leave ISU guards a little space on the perimeter and its an automatic 3.

This game was lost on 50/50 balls. Hopefully a lesson for the squad. On to the next one.

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #376

KU'S collective would like a refund on the Storr fee

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #377

Not an eighteen point losss just gave a total ho hum in the end for sure

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #378

Game got away from KU late, definitely some give up vibes.

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #379

This was the first game I have honest feelings about wanting to move on from Self.

Its scary, and hard to replace a coach like Self.

But it might be time if we are an early out this tourney on his account.

Talent is there.

Jan 16, 2025 01:46 AM #380

One alpha dog on the team, and Bill won't let the team ride on his shoulders

Jan 16, 2025 01:47 AM #381

I am going to predict - - -Hoston beats Iowa State

Jan 16, 2025 01:47 AM #382

Bill has two of best scorers transfer in from the Big 10. Has a guy who scored 11 ppg from a FF team. A guy who dropped 22 ppg a year ago. The POY from Summit.

And we can’t fucking score.

This one on Bill

Jan 16, 2025 01:48 AM #383

Congrats, ISU. Hope you can handle the heat!

Jan 16, 2025 01:50 AM #384

@DanR who is that? Flory?

Jan 16, 2025 01:51 AM #385

Elite defense. Offense is very much not elite. I don't think the offense is going to get much better this year unfortunately.

Jan 16, 2025 01:51 AM #386

Jan 16, 2025 01:51 AM #387

Jan 16, 2025 01:52 AM #388

@patoh3 I havent gotten that far yet.

Jan 16, 2025 01:53 AM #389

Disappointing loss and there isn't a lot of positives to take from it. You just have 3 Sr's that are very limited offensive players. Mayo not being the focal pt and not realizing just how impactful Flory has been, kind of keeping the team from finding it's ceiling which has shown itself a lot since December to be low

Jan 16, 2025 01:54 AM #390

Can we hire an offensive coordinator?

Jan 16, 2025 01:55 AM #391

@BeddieKU23 doesnt matter if he is stuck coordinating Hunt Harris and KJ

Jan 16, 2025 01:56 AM #392

The team isn’t jelling. Storr is in desperation mode. Kinda sad to watch.
I’m not sure this is Selfs fault. Hunter looks slow. Kj plays his heart out but can’t really score, and now this team is struggling. Mayo is a nice surprise.

I remember before the season, the consensus was that this team was going to suck on D. Actually their D is pretty damn good at times.

Would be hard to see this squad be a potential nat champion, but I’ve decided to chuck expectations and try to enjoy them as they are

Jan 16, 2025 01:58 AM #393

i just dont remember in 2007-2008 ever thinking ā€œman what the hell is Self doing playing x over y?ā€

Is this a common thing with people watching other teams? Do you think that about players on Wisconsin riding pine @wissox ?

Storr isn't in desperation mode, that's always been his game. He has always been selfish with the ball and takes a bunch of bad shots and makes dumb passes.

Jan 16, 2025 02:00 AM #396

@Texas-Hawk-10
Didn’t know that… that explains his selfish play

Jan 16, 2025 02:01 AM #397

@Texas-Hawk-10 AJ moves his head completely to see ball and man instead of getting in position to see ball and man at same time. I know you coach jr hi boys and I watch jr hi gals. Been awhile since I coached that age. You're right.

Jan 16, 2025 02:01 AM #398

I’m still in the tweaks not overhaul mode. A couple minutes here, a couple there and all the sudden things look a lot better. As much as I hate to say it because I adore KJ, but if he’s out for a bit we might see some guys step up.

Jan 16, 2025 02:03 AM #399

The defense wasn’t terrible, you won’t beat them while they are shooting 62% from 3 in Hilton. We just had zero answers on offense a combined 10 points for Hunt and KJ won’t win us many games. Silly turnovers and missed FTs at key moments by our 5th year senior PG was definitely disappointing.

Jan 16, 2025 02:03 AM #400

Hunter was soft as baby shit tonight. There's no reason why he shouldn't make multiple trips to the FT line every game, but zero tonight.

Other than the FT line, Dejuan wasn't bad tonight and I don't put a ton of blame on him for tonight. And this doesn't mean that he was perfect, but he doesn't get the majority of the blame tonight the way Hunter does.

Game was closer than the final score for sure. It was tight with 6 minutes left and got away. I hope we are done with AJ after this showing and the Diggy minutes baffle me.

AJ had a 32% usage rate at Wisconsin last season. He is the Temu version of James Harden

Jan 16, 2025 02:06 AM #404

@BShark time to trim up the rotation at this point Coit and AJ should only play a few minutes when need for foul trouble.

Jan 16, 2025 02:06 AM #405

@approxinfinity He’s regressed on roster construction and his scheme

High low with a 5 who’s slow and can’t guard

A 4 who can’t shoot anything but a dunk and can’t rebound

Pg who can’t defend on the ball, can’t attack and can’t score or shoot consistently

Bill’s ā€œguysā€ are real and he values stuff that doesn’t translate

Jan 16, 2025 02:07 AM #406

Our awesome D held them to 74

Our incredible offense scored a solid 57

You take scorers and teach them to defend and scheme the D up

Bill takes defenders and hopes they magically figure out how to score

Jr. High kids doing this is fine because it's the first time for the vast majority to play organized basketball instead of recess or PE basketball. His closeouts suck and that second foul that most were complaining about was a poor technique of wrapping his arms around the guy instead of extending his arms. I teach my players all the time that when they guard like that, a smart player is going to initiate contact a draw a foul every time to take advantage of poor defensive technique.

Jan 16, 2025 02:19 AM #414

@BShark he should take the KU out of his name!

Jan 16, 2025 02:20 AM #415

@approxinfinity Self has always had this

Traylor
Morningstar
Reed

He’s always had ā€œhis guysā€ that are in his circle of trust that limit the teams ceiling. He values things that don’t translate to scoring

Rather than having his team go play excellent he prefers to ā€œmake you play worseā€. Already thinking about the other team versus thinking ā€œhow can we play our bestā€.

His entire coaching philosophy has been bad but he’s been successful due the greatest home court of all time and we did get talent even if he didn’t always play it

He picks some guys to encourage and give huge leashes and other guys he can’t stand and pulls with 1 eff

I’m telling you Rylan ain’t happy and his sick of this crap

Others on the team are pissed at what kj, hunt and Juan get away with and the going on three years of L’s is ZERO proof they are WINNERS

Jan 16, 2025 02:22 AM #416

14 point differential on FT’s made and 3 more 3 pointers made were the difference. Actual shots were exactly the same total at 59. We actually shot 3 more 3 pointers than they did. We had 14 less shots at the charity stripe. Getting to the line and then making them along with reducing stupid TO’s and fouls would solve our problems. Wish it was as easy as saying it. I don’t understand why we cannot get fouls called when we drive into the paint.

Jan 16, 2025 02:24 AM #417

Tweet Derek Johnson - so telling. Self isn’t tanking his legacy he values defense over offense and schemes that don’t translate to today. You all can see it with minimal bball knowledge which says plenty

Kansas has lost 41 games in the Bill Self era at Kansas by 13 or more points (average of about 2/season)

However, 12 of those have come in the last 2.5 seasons

Bill will play a proven player alongside two newbies in the backcourt. They won’t kick Coit to the curb either. He’s a good deep bench piece that understands how to play here. And with revshare it’s good money to pass up.

Jan 16, 2025 02:34 AM #426

@kuballin10 i cant blame the personnel, even if many of them have limitations that wont go away.

But you cant recruit guys like that and then play to their weaknesses instead of their strengths.

I hope that this game is used as evidence in the court of practice that Shak needs more time on ball, Rylen needs more minutes, and Bidunga needs to be unleashed.

Jan 16, 2025 02:40 AM #427

Also I disagree with some here that think AJ should be cut from the rotation. He was capable first half, then rode pine until we were behind and did alright before making a couple mistakes.

Jan 16, 2025 02:56 AM #434

I really don’t think this loss changes a lot with it being to a top 5 team on the road. I wouldn’t even be remotely worried if we had taken care of business against Fizzou and WV. We can still win this conference but it just got a lot tougher IMO. I think 3 losses wins it but the way we play on the road I’m not banking on us winning another away from Allen.

It’s concerning that guys like KJ, Hunt, Storr and Coit seem to have zero bounce to start games. Our starters are all experienced seniors but they don’t play with any poise. I don’t think Juan was terrible in the game tonight but a few freshmen level turnovers and 1/6 from the line for a 5th year senior guard is flat out unacceptable. Which in turn made it a terrible night. Hunt was super soft tonight which we all knew was a terrible match up with how ISU plays. Hopefully we take our frustration on the Mildcats Saturday like we did UCF.

Edit: I’ll continue to blow my horn at KJ playing too much. Both of our big runs had him on the bench.

Jan 16, 2025 03:05 AM #435

There will be people here come Saturday that will think everything with Dickinson is just fine when he rebounds with an effort like 20 & 12 and people will say see everything is fine- - ummm NO - -NO it's not , Dickinson I'll say once again is slow ---so slow , and every time he comes up against another Big that's close to his size and athletic count him out he is a no show does nothing - -once again NO VERTICAL gets beat on defense , complains about every call- -Dickinson is NOT Athletic at all,- -What Hunter is -- -is Big- -Bulky- -and a very slow non athletic even his post moves are slow and methodical. Dickinson may not be our main problem but he for sure is a problem

Jan 16, 2025 03:07 AM #436

@BShark you want another year of kj and d2??? You can’t be serious

ā€œKansas beats top teams early in the season; he lets them play for a couple of games, then puts them into the round holes. Notice that after KU wins those games, he says something like, "Well, we didn't play any defense.."ā€

So here is this - -Both teams shoot identical FG % for the game 40.9 %- -24/59. Big reason for this loss ISU five less turnovers m and Fourteen free throw advantage of made- -18/4 - -no reason for this -- these are FREE POINTS your opposition is giving you-- -they are FREE for God's sakes.-- & getting beat by ten rebounds with our 7'2 guy-- NICE--No Excuses, time to stand up and represent the name written on the Jersey- -you play like a pile then be willing to admit-- I played like crap - - No Excuses-- time to get your ass in gear-- How Dickinson ever got mentioned as a possible Big Twelve player of the year/All American- -WHERRE I don't see it, if that's an All American then something is fixed & if he is then play like an All American against quality opponents not just Cream Puff University

The lowdown

Self let’s his upper classmen guys get away with a million mistakes but they are ā€œhis guys with a leashā€ even though their results are more L’s and blowouts than ever before

Brings in other upper classmen and treats them like freshman

Oats ain’t coming here and programs licking their chops watching Houston and isu run things while another blue blood becomes the next ucla/indiana

Jan 16, 2025 04:09 AM #446

@approxinfinity Sorry for the late response, the Y was calling for a late night swim so I turned it off. Maybe this is true for a lot of schools like them but team construction is different. Not too many 5 stars playing there. System players seems to be Gard's MO and he seems to be pretty good at constructing a team. Right now they're fairly deep, but guys coming off the bench are not big time portal guys, but a UWGB guard Kamari McGee who has been amazing, or John Tonje, again not a huge name but is probably an all american, 2nd team, 3rd team? He's pushing the right buttons this year it looks like.

"It’s always the same equation for us in Ames…. Can we take care of the ball? Hilton is a tough venue and if we start this game with turnovers and fall behind the temperature in Hilton rises from screaming fans and becomes easy for them to roll us! If we keep it to around 10 total turnovers in the game, we stand a chance. We need to keep Hunter in the low post and space properly."

Hunter was pure awful... very anemic. It's so hard to win when he plays outside the paint. His high ball screens do nothing. He hasn't hit a three in centuries, he has no chance at a rebound, and his strength is in low post scoring, but he allowed himself to get pushed around in this game. Didn't help the refs had some bad calls. His "arm bar" foul was ridiculous. Self should have thrown a fit and drew a technical to see if his guys would wake up.

Our guys came in here feeling sure they were going to lose. It's that kind of game we get from several foes in AFH. I bet we go 10 in a row losses in Ames now. It's already been 3 in a row. The mental conditioning has begun.

KJ didn't have a great game but I give him kudos for bringing effort above the rest... except for Zeke, who was his normal greatness!

Hey, it sucks to lose. But losing like that is maddening and frustrating. F-U-G-L-Y.

I lost track of how many times we got a turnover and within a split second turned it right back over.

But, we had a chance to be in this game all night. Stupid turnovers and bad decision making.

I think starting Shak has positives and negatives. The defense is obviously better. But, today at least, we suffer with really only ONE offensive threat on the perimeter. Shouldn’t take much for teams to try to shutdown Zeke. Leaves zero room for Hunter to operate and gain good position.

So, if you’re starting Shak, you gotta start Rylan and not KJ, who is a non threat on O.

Self has his hands full. I wish he would think about offense. You have to score more than the other team to win.

Jan 16, 2025 07:02 AM #450

And of course — fun with the box score.

Sums it up:

FTs

KU 4-11

ISU 18-25

Game over.

Jan 16, 2025 12:55 PM #451

Hunter made two decisions to take it easy and not over exert himself and ISU hustled and got possession. One was followed by an ISU three dagger. They played us tougher than we could handle but in spite of our bad passing we still got good looks but couldn't convert. It looks like Juan, Zeke and a top five recruiting first year class of three and four stars who we thought and they thought were likely one and done guys. Our basic offense just looks like a road to nowhere. I go into games thinking it will finally click and the pent up talent will explode. I haven't given up but hurry up before I give out. Of course it is hard to win when Cyclone Jones who shoots with one butt cheek facing the basket is making 30 footers.

Jan 16, 2025 01:00 PM #452

@rockchalkjayhawk that shows how aggressive we ain’t. Not sure I remember a team of KUs hovering around single digits for FT attempts.

I posted earlier this season, every year we have ran 4 guards since 2010 we have made it to atleast the elite 8. The years we ran the 1980s high low we were setting at home after the first weekend.

- 3-pointers: 26.9% (ranked 292)
- 2-pointers: 61.0% (ranked 4)
- Free throws: 12.1% (ranked 364 - this is dead last)

Had a friend send this to me and I stared at it for 10 minutes like it was a modern art masterpiece (of terrible). This would have been bad in 1996. We cannot win this way.

Jan 16, 2025 02:15 PM #455

@MoonwalkMafia Uh uh uh yeah we can cause you won’t play every game good so uh uh when we play bad we just gotta make sure they play worse

The problem is we play bad a lot (more blowouts in 2.5 years than ever before). Self’s philosophy is iowa football: win 17-14 - vs. we need to be Oregon or Ohio State with athletes and let them play.

Other site nailed it - we win big games early like the Duke game but then you hear Self say ā€œoh well we didn’t play any defense tonightā€. He fails to recognize we won that game as Hunter sat the last 8 minutes…..he’s that oblivious

He’s won consistently with defense but only has the 2 titles after more 1 seeds than you can imagine.

Playing the way we do though it makes sense with how the tourney goes. Tony Bennett, Iowa football - that crap never works in any sport for multiple titles unless you have a ton of luck like 2022 (Bill’s words).

If Bill can’t be successful unless you have guys in the system for 3+ years he needs to retire. He treats jr transfers like freshman which he can’t grasp not to do.

Rather than taking us to new heights after his heart he’s taken us the opposite direction while supposedly getting the players he wants with no ncaa cloud and great nil.

This is all on him and he won’t ever fix it because he won’t switch the rotations up because of his trust and loyalty

As @approxinfinity is seeing we come back with kj on the bench and he puts him right back in and their lead expands.

Bill hasn’t seen clear for well over 3 years now and without remy and kalkenbrenner he’d be looking even more foolish

Jan 16, 2025 02:20 PM #456

Dajuan is atrocious. He is the worst PG of the Self era by far. KJ played with effort but he isn’t very skilled so at some point it becomes harmful. Hunter wasn’t into it at all yesterday.

At this point I’m just looking forward to next season and getting some new kids in the program.

@TYOHawk The more I look at the program since 2013 the worse it actually gets on how he handles players and his system

The best teams as the other poster pointed out were 4/1 and yet he’s talking about playing 3 bigs because he’s so frustrated with our wings. Maybe coddle them like you do the big 3 and they’d produce better.

If he Embiid or Oubre’s incoming DP he needs to be ā€œretiredā€ next year because he will have effed up yet another roster.

He’s going to value Elmarko and McDowell and somehow Clemence might get minutes because they know what he wants and practice well versus all the young guys and 1-3 upper classmen transfers he brings in and gets mad at how they do things in practice.

He runs a program like the 80’s

He’s gaslit the program for multiple years that Juan is the truest pure pg and incredible - people said ā€œself knows more than message board idiotsā€ and actually the people watching the games from their house could see it clearer

He thought Hunter is the next Jokovic and he can’t defend a ball screen or the rack, roll quickly to the hoop or hit 3’s consistently. Yet Bill knows more and plays him

He’s gaslit us that kj is as impactful to a game as Ochai was. He had the game against Duke and watching Duke that would go different if we played again. Every other game he can’t score outside a dunk, kills all offensive spacing (doesn’t matter Juan can’t beat his man off the dribble consistently anyways) and can’t rebound.

He plays a pg who isn’t a threat to score and can’t shoot - when he shoots a lot the other team loves it. And he plays a 4 man that is zero threat to score and other teams don’t guard. We then can’t score but he doesn’t care because defensively he’s happy getting beat 74-57. Oh but with 4 minutes left it was a 6 point game. Did you all watch? We never had control, we’re down the 15-11 and NEVER took the lead again. OH YEAH BUT WE WERE RIGHT THERE BABY AND ALMOST HAD THIS ONE!

Yet Self never sits these three - thinks they are his best shot to win and has yet another year where we aren’t even conference contenders let alone a title

Hope you all keep those title hopes alive and keep on believin because you clearly are seeing the same stuff I have for 3 years and somehow expecting different results which is the definition of insanity

@kjayhawks said since 2010 correct? 2011 and 2012 each used high-low with 2 bigs as the base offense with an Elite 8 and title game appearance. 2013-2015 were all 4 guard line up teams and none reached the Elite 8 and two of those teams were 9 and 10 loss seasons with second round exits. Also, Doke didn't play in the 2018 Final Four because he was out for the season with injury.

So, an objectively false statement just like yours about being done posting for the year, yet you're still posting.

@rockchalkjayhawk Alot of that is from 2nd chance points and ISU attacking the rim-- -that's something we don't seem capable of or just flat don't want to do - good reason for that separation

Jan 16, 2025 03:33 PM #465

My blood pressure is so much better after giving up college basketball. I'll still watch college football even though the transfer portal and NIL evil exists, but at least in football you get to watch them knock the crap out of each other. That's always fun. See y'all August 23rd.

The thing that bothers me most about last night besides the poor in-game management of rotations and reading the room of who was playing well/wasn't, is the fact three Seniors, two of them 5th/6th year guys did not have a lot of poise during critical parts of this game. The turnovers last night were awful from Juan and Hunt in particular. This is a reoccurring issue that happens in big games like this, especially on the road. We've seen the ceiling of all 3, there is nothing untapped to unlock from any of them. Maybe they will learn from this but I'm not optimistic there.

Hunt's effort last night was piss-poor on both ends. There's a pattern there with him when things don't go well. Competitiveness especially.

Juan missing 5 Free Throws at critical points of the game. Unfortunate I guess is the nice way of putting it.

Hopefully KJ is okay with that shoulder, but he was not good on offense around the rim. 4 years later with his athletic ability and still not finishing strong and through contact.

Zeke is our best offensive player and yet he is rarely the focus. Flory is one of our best 5 players and yet he's a sub playing out of position when Hunt stays in. What a mess

Jan 16, 2025 05:44 PM #471

Also wanna say I hate that Zeke is on this roster. I know the front of that jersey means something to that kid and he’s played his ass off. He’s just stuck on a roster where the circle of trust runs this roster.

Considering we’ve been getting our ass kicked during most of Juan’s tenure not really. For KJ I do think it means something so I’m wrong for omitting him but Zeke is a Lawrence kid.

ESPN radio just said Self has lost by 12 or more points 40 times in his KU career, 13 of those have came in the last 3 years to date. Thats over 32% of blowouts in a very short time frame for Kansas basketball. We all ain’t used to that for sure

Legit laughable take. We would’ve been out in the second round if it wasn’t for Remy. Creighton was leaving Dajuan open all first half. @BeddieKU23 I agree probably with you on 99% , I also think in a lot of these bigger , more intense games these guys get sped up, which is not good. They get caught up with better more athletic players and then turns into a cluster F - - - , Has to be changes BUT were not going to see it --Coach has that bull headed streak in him, which is not good.

I'm still a huge fan of Coach but dam got to fix this as much as i hate to say the article I read and then posted the thread here titled about harsh was spot on.- -I think coach has to turn that leash lose and let these guys go. - - How can a kid feel comfortable/confident when he spends more time looking over at the scorers table every time he makes a mistake, worried about getting yanked,

Dam straight does it suck mistakes are being made? -- hell ya it does, but we see mistakes galore from Dickinson -- even Juan and yet you don't see either getting yanked out in a flash- -let these kids play through the mis mistake and learn- - the mistake is in the past and move on There is no way a player can focus on his game- - -and play to his capability if he is scared to death the first time he screws up he is getting yanked.

All your doing with that approach is destroying any self confidence the kid may have to where he becomes a shell of himself and then what?- -Plus you can believe this or not BUT sooner or later this kind of happenings is going to get out and players aren't going to want to come play here and go through this bullshit --you don't think if another player who is considering KU if they talk to AJ and or Griffen or whoever and ask how their experience here and playing for Coach Self was, you don't think they won't say it sucked and your an idiot if you come and go through this- --Ha guess again

Now watch come Sat and if we curb stomp KSU and play well then all you hear is - -ove see people just over reacting we are fine we don't have issues- - - umm YES we do and they need fiixed and fixed now

You are missing the point young lady. No one is saying these guys don’t care about KU. Maybe Storr doesn’t care about anything or Hunt didn’t last night. A bit of advise that I got from a successful college coach ā€œMy job is to find someone better than my current players. The players job is to push themselves to the level that I can’t do my jobā€. Coaches have to put their team in the best position win games regardless of whom you like better or have had on your roster longer.

@kjayhawks reread it!

Jan 16, 2025 09:34 PM #485

I think people are overcomplicating what's going on here. An offense with Harris and Adams each playing 30 minutes a game is never going to be better than mediocre because of how limited they are offensively. It's exacerbated by Shak Moore (and I like him) not being a good shooter and David Coit being on a legendary cold streak shooting the ball.

Griffen needs to be playing 30+ minutes (currently only averaging 18), and Storr needs more minutes too (also averaging 18). I realize Storr has sucked this year, but he's a career 35% 3pt shooter and is probably our best hope of getting to the FT line more often if he can manage to get his act together.

Defense has been pretty good for the most part, but Hunter has the mobility of a 40-year-old man and good teams like Iowa St that force Hunter to defend PnRs, rotate, and recover are going to get a lot of open looks/layups.

Basically I think Zeke and Rylan need to be leading the team in minutes, KJ's minutes need to go down significantly, and Juan's minutes need to go down slightly. And if Coit continues to play like this I'd rather see Passmore get minutes.

Jan 16, 2025 10:16 PM #486

@rockchalkjayhawk It is a little tiresome. A little unfair too, that players worse than them take none of the blame. But that's the way the cookie crumbles.

He doesn’t need much athletic ability to get his shot off. Great touch. He needs teammates or a coach with the ability to get him open near the hoop. Not 15 feet away from the hoop where his unathletic ability slows things down. Spacing!

It’s happened before. It can happen again. Maybe.

Hunter was decent until he picked up his second foul. After that, he was playing not to commit any more fouls which manifested as him being very unaggresive last night.

Jan 17, 2025 12:57 AM #493

@BShark Honest question - has he not said all those incredible things about Juan? And does he not play him an obscene amount of minutes in big games which confirms what he said?

Not sure how a poster is a narcissist but maybe the coach who’s ego has never ever been checked and is experiencing legitimate failure with his favorite pg of all time - needs a reality check about his analysis????

Just maybe?

Jan 17, 2025 12:58 AM #494

@kjayhawks It’s those two plus Hunt as well…..but definitely those two dating back to the Ark game

Doesn’t it kinda suck that for the last four or five years every argument comes down to KJ and Juan?

Can we all agree that Hunter is the most immobile upright ferret we’ve ever seen run? Just looking for something to unite the board…

Son of Thom, Son of Mickel, Son of Dickins.

All the Hunters I know.

It is all 3

Best guys to build around at Shak, Zeke and Rylan and definitely sprinkle in Hunt and KJ

No way Bill sees it that way - ooppps I’m a narcissist for even attempting to know what he thinks

I mean wth - what kind of message board is it when the coach says it and plays him a ton

It’s evident he attributes that title to starting pg

More proof??? Try right after the game when THE FIRST guy he gave credit to was Juan

Any other coach points out Big Dave’s bucket or remy’s herorics but nah we get the guy who stepped ob with 3 seconds and sat for almost the final 10 minutes of game time

I mean speak of a narcissist he’s obsessed with giving Juan credit

KU now dead last in free throw attempts in all of college ball

Jan 17, 2025 02:36 AM #497

@BeddieKU23 and we don’t shoot a lot of threes

But we love tough 2’s and the mid range game cause we can’t get to the rim well

geniuscoaching!

HUNT - I read other KU stuff, too. I liked the idea where the rest of Hunt’s NIL money is based on a performance contract. He’s making his big money in life now. Makes sense. He is way too laid back!

JUAN - Self is playing him off the ball now (2 guard). Seems like he’s less focused. I like Shaq and his defense but we need more offense out of the 1-2. If it’s not him then Juan needs to score more.

SHAQ - he’s still not 100%. Most of it now is psychological. Getting him to feel like he can do more and not get hurt. I’m still hopeful to see more improvements from him.

KJ - he’s playing with more intensity and it’s a huge help. Now if he can regain his shooting touch from mid range!

Rylan/AJ - essentially we play both a few minutes and hope they add a couple buckets. Not big production and it’s a pity because many of us expected more.

Diggy - a smaller version of Rylan/AJ.

Flory - he’s inconsistent… but he’s a freshman. What is clear is we don’t coach up our bigs.

TEAM - we are capable of killing the best teams or losing to the worst. It all depends on the mindset we bring into games. Hope we peak in March… could be exciting. I can just as easy see us go home the first weekend. As far as conference crown… forget it. No way! ISU or Houston. I expect us to finish 3 or 4.

@drgnslayr

I think we've seen Juan isn't a scorer, nor can he be relied upon to do so on any kind of consistent basis. The Creighton/Mizzou week where he went 11/35 from the field in two games where both teams baited him to shoot is a good example.

Jan 17, 2025 02:49 PM #500

@drgnslayr it tough to score points when 3 starters don’t look to score and the defense doesn’t have to respect them in the slightest. You only have to guard Zeke and Hunt. Long story short it’s just too easy for opposing teams to hold us below 70 most nights.

Jan 17, 2025 02:53 PM #501

@drgnslayr I also really like the idea of pay for performance, but I don’t think that is feasible with the current NIL structure.

Jan 17, 2025 03:00 PM #502

@patoh3 Don’t worry. The courts just said Title IX means the women need paid an equal amount as men’s sports. That 20 million payroll is to be split evenly between women’s and mens sports.
Guess that upcoming 4 million dollar volleyball budget will pay major dividends since volleyball draws the eyes.

Round and round we go. Just when NIL was making people do things above board, title ix swoops in and creates a new necessity for under the table NIL

A remarkable (remarkably sad) stat. We don't have a player averaging more than 2 FTAs pg other than Dickinson, and he less well less than 3. The past two years, McCullar and Wilson averaged about 6 trips to the line per game. Same with Dotson, Graham and even Lawson. Mason averaged about 7 his senior year. The title team had 4 players averaging 3-5 FTAs per game.

We're on a pace for about ~400 team FTAs. The title team had about 660. The 15-16 team had 762.

Inexplicable, but this team just plays soft...

Jan 18, 2025 03:01 PM #507

@DCHawker Agreed. They play very soft, it seems all players do everything in their power to avoid contact. I’d love to see slashers putting pressure on the other team by fouling them up. I’d like to see Flory drawing as many fouls as he gives. Improved rebounding and fouling up the other team are mostly effort plays, they can do it if they set their mind to it.
