Curious what y’all think our chances are against Houston. Never thought I’d not like our chances against anyone at home. But losing to WV earlier shook my faith a bit. (tho they did just beat ISU recently) Vegas has Houston by 2. Which is about the same as last year when we were 1.5-point home underdogs to the Cougars (before our 79-65 victory). Just feels different this year.

Houston leads the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. On Wednesday, the Cougars held Utah to 36 points.

Kansas connects on a sad 6.7 fools gold three-pointers per game (284th in college basketball) at a 33.3% rate (209th in college basketball).

Unless Storr or Griffen find their offensive fire, I think we could be in for a long game. I was going to give a final score prediction, but my head and my heart are too far apart. Any thoughts from those wiser than me? Hopefully positive ones?

I can’t remember all the times some under achiever caught fire and went off and had the game of their career against us. Sure would like to see that scenario reversed against the Cougs and Storr drop 20+ on them.

I am thinking the percentages of the game at about 55/45 % KU and that could be my crimson & blue heart doing the thinking instead of my peanut size brain doing the thinking lol.

I think it's going to be an ugly game , with a lot of fouls. I think it's going to be hard to get into any kind of flow because of whistles, Biggest keys to winning will be rebounding especially keeping Houston off the boards on the offensive end & for us to keep from turning the ball over , giving Houston extra possessions and 100% especially NO live ball turnovers.

One big reason for saying an ugly game is because Houston is # one in the defensive side & KU is # four. One other big thing is you just CAN NOT give Sharp any open looks . There has been a little talk about him being able to play because he messed his ankle up I guess in practice , but chances are he will play You have to try and run him off the three point line or get a really good contested shot at the least. I think he is shooting like 47% from the three - -him and Cryer will kill you off open looks. I think your going to have to switch off on ball screens and not get caught up if you try and not switch off , Cryer has a pretty quick release

Anyways having said that I think I will still go out a little bit , hope we come out play really well, avoid these dam slow starts --and hopefully with us getting going from the tip & home Court- - you know the Phog is going to be really juiced- - I'll go out and say- -KU 66 - & Houston --63.-- -ROCK CHALK

Slim I like your score prediction. Jay The Duke Bilas said this morning that Auburn and Houston are the top two in playing hard. If I remember Iowa State pushed us off the ball maybe Cincinnati did too. The point is Houston is on you so hard you pick up your dribble and the percentage of bad things happening goes up. Bill will want to go inside to Hunter but Houston has an athletic and beefy 6'8" shot blocker with an impressive wing span that Hunter may have trouble with. Hunt will get his shots but needs to hit 60% or so. Houston is shooting 39.9% from three while we allow only 28.6%. I can go on and on but we are evenly matched and our ability to score any which way will win the day. What I don't want to see is them getting up by four or so possessions and we might make little runs but they hold us off all game like ISU did. The ISU point differential is from their end of game junk baskets but they just held us off and there wasn't anything we could do about it. Not a good feeling at all.

Sharp will play today. The odds for a team winning the natty has Duke #1 Houston and ISU at #3 & #4 and our own sweet selves as the #9 favorite. Wouldn't it be nice to be 2 up and 1 down versus the top four?

I think you are forgetting auburn who’s #1. If anybody watched gameday at all - it was all about offense, great guards who can attack and shoot it and flat out fill it up

They play hard defense but aren’t perfect….meanwhile they often can’t be stopped offensively

Picking this game is a tough one. I don’t feel too confident in a win, but it’s possible. The Jayhawks are a bit more unpredictable this season than in years past.

If we get in a hole today after a typical slow start, a think a comeback will be more difficult.

I do think Hunter can excel in this game. Bidunga, too.

If either goes off, I say we win 70-67.

If not, I think there will be too much defensive pressure on Zeke to pull this one off.

This game could go either way. Without KJ I think its logical that Houston is favored

Dejuan Harris didn't cost KU Philon. I know the narrative is about him playing PG, but if that were the case, Philon wouldn't have gone to Alabama to play next to Mark Sears. Philon decommitted a couple of days after Elmarko announced he was returning, but somehow it was Dejuan's fault, not Self choosing Elmarko. That PG narrative is pure BS.

Tonight is frustrating and bringing out the worst in KU's fanbase. I don't understand how some people are justifying Dejuan taking all the blame tonight. He absolutely deserves a piece of the blame for his FT misses, but KU was also 17-30 as a team. Zeke was 3-6, Storr was 0-4, Griffen was 2-4. Harris also didn't dribble the ball off his leg. Harris didn't get a 5 second call. Harris didn't throw away an inbound pass. While Harris does get a piece of the blame, Zeke Mayo gets the biggest piece of the blame for his lack of awareness while inbounding the ball.

Self has allowed his affinity for certain guys to affect him way too much recently. We all know he’s had favorites in the past but he could be somewhat subjective…now if you aren’t in the circle of trust..Good luck

Clearly changes need to happen at the top back to back preseason #1 teams without conference titles and first weekend exits. Unacceptable for our program and Goff has to hold him accountable.

I'm kind of amazed I'm the one that doesn't think the sky is failing. It's a collapse, sure. But the worst thing about it is, we found some answers tonight. Griffen played great. So did Flory. They missed some FTs down the stretch. That hurts. But it happens in basketball. My biggest concern is that the way we lost wipes out the growth we saw tonight.

It stinks to hear how we wouldn’t win crap outside of the B12 for years and it’s proven to be true since expanding the conference. We don’t even have regular season supremacy to hang our hats on. Upon further review, that was so much more than a loss. It was a Greek tragedy.

It was just one of those days and we came into this big game as doubting this team really had the goods. What do we make of Flory and Rylan? They played their bunsuelos off. We were thinking we should be shooting better and we did especially Rylan from deep. I feel really bad for Rylan surely he's hurting right now. I can't even describe Flory's game. He was everywhere and relentless wherever he was. I was like yes! yes! yes! and the pessimist Zabudda whom I don't like very much was lurking around and I acted out bad enough to embarrass myself. Oh well shoot a nickel and now I'm looking forward to the UCF game on Tuesday to see what transpires.

@kjayhawks I'm definitely not the smartest. It's just self preservation, like you hinted at. College basketball has been ruined for me. The money and the ability to transfer on a whim has made it a mini NBA, which I also don't like. I miss the camaraderie/ angst of this site, but that's about it.

Lots of blame to go around for this one. Certain senior players made costly mistakes, missed free throws, inbounds mistakes. Our coach did not prevent the inbounds blunders from happening twice. That's been a pattern in his tenure here unfortunately over the years.

I can't think of a more shocking and disappointing loss at home. This should have been a big win providing the kind of momentum that propells seasons forward. I would be shocked if this one didn't weaken the locker room and didn't have an immediate impact on the next week. That's a haunting loss for all.

I would be shocked if we brought the same level of effort on March 3 when we play them again. I would love to be wrong, maybe they will recover but we've seen this novel play out before.

I'll continue to watch and support and hope this was just yet another roadblock to overcome but it's getting difficult to say that anymore

2022 - Kalkebrenner not playing and Bacot severely hobbled. We still delivered and the game against nova was awesome

My thing is we never just rolled through the field or anything - games are always close.

This looking back is because the style Bill plays. Right now he’s just cashing $10m checks and adding to his investments so he can spoil the grandkids more….but his favorites are brutal.

Rather than get up there and say flory was a stud he references missing a starter. Dude is obsessed with kj and d2. He didn’t even bring up him missing free throws.

I was always told flory would foul out quick if he played and yet he played against a physical team and fouls out in double OT. The Self defenders are blind as heck

I have defended Juan for 4 years .. if a senior and a decent foul shooter can’t make just one out two to ice the game at home, then good god WTF. He choked. Houston made their clutch free throws. They are clearly a better team than us right now. I’m done defending Juando. The three of Hunter KJ and Jaun whom I have rooted for and defended are not good enough to lead a top ten team. I love KJ but it’s a fact.

Next year will an interesting season for Self. The bloom is fading rapidly.

If Juan was the only player on the team to miss his free throws I'd be a little more critical BUT he wasn't . He actually did fine ( for the most part ) did he miss huge free throws ? -Absolutely -- yet so did others Rylan - - Zeke at critical times. I would say Juan's eight points - -2/3 from the three- - twelve assists -- & ONE turnover is a pretty good games worth should be good enough- -well for most it would be

Yes all good points, but a senior who is ostensibly a team leader just CANNOT miss both. I’m not sure I ever saw Juan clank one off the front rim. Clearly nerves maybe combined with fatigue. He absolutely needed to make that second one.

Btw who is the leader of this team? KJ? Jaun is not a born leader, I think Hunter may be on the spectrum, his affect is weird, plus there is always the feeling that he is here really for the money. and as one poster commented, he is soft as baby s—t. Good bigs neutralize him because he is slow.
Zeke is trying hard to be our stud god bless him, but it puts him in a position to force shots which look desperate at times.

I think my KU colored glasses are finally coming off. I can see them for what they are, including the coach.

I will root for them of course, but as they are, not what I (and most of us) hoped they would be.

Can Self afford one more year of another highly touted but ultimately under-performing team?

I’ve always suspected that his coaching style kills confidence in many of his players. He plays his favorites to a fault, and yanks the guys off the bench when they make mistakes, which makes for a non-chemistry team.
Keep playing our bench, let them play thru mistakes, and it will pay off come March.

Once you are there anything can happen. This felt like one of those tournament losses to Northern Iowa, Bucknell, VCU. Not the same circumstances but just how deflating it felt after having what looked like two leads that couldn't be taken away.

We got our tournament loss out of the way early.

Believe me im absolutely hoping they get some chemistry and swagger. Many games still to play. I am a 100% fan. Just not deceiving myself anymore.

Speaking of swagger, I am a Maryland basketball fan because my daughter went there recently. I just watched them beat Indiana on the road… They’re playing fearlessly and they’re playing with absolute confidence and belief. They also beat a ranked team on the road a few days ago. I’m not saying that they will go real far in the tourney, but I’m frankly jealous of their fearlessness and wide open play. Their coach, Kevin Willard, seems to let his guys just play through bonehead mistakes and rushed shots, and missed defensive assignments. They sure as hell believe in themselves… Can Kansas get to a point to believe in themselves?

This really makes zero sense. Is Self limiting his minutes for injury? Personal observation: It sucks that Harris missed those free throws to ice the game, but that really was his main blunder on the day. He did let his man drive by him uncontested a few times. Sadly, Zeke looked rattled a few times yesterday after the inbounds debacle. Shak for sure needed more minutes.

He had a stupid foul that dolla bill harped on him for and then never put him back in. Comically bad coaching but I’m not shocked as we are going on two years of this.

Besides the superlatives and the dajuan hate i agree. I think dajuan did great. 42 minutes is a lot though. I would give shak diggy’s minutes, most of mayo’s late game minutes, and then i dont think dajuan’s tank gets to empty anyway.

Unfortunately some fans think the loss affects them more than the players. Mayo had to delete his instagram account due to the disgusting behavior of some “fans”.

Possibly the worst loss in decades of being a fan. Is this the game we point to as the nail in the coffin this season, or does it motivate them to not let shit like this happen again? Iowa State on Feb 3 should be very telling.

There was a lot of good things from yesterday. Flory is a difference maker out there. He's one of the most exciting freshman we have had here and plays his tail off.

Rylan Griffen finally gave us one of those shooting performances that get you excited for what he could do in big games and he delivered. Had some big rebounds as well.

If we are looking beyond this season, both of these guys could be building blocks for next season

@BeddieKU23 I just don't think we will see Rylan back, the way things have gone I'm not convinced one games makes a Season change, on his part I think he is not happy with minutes -this game sure, but he has had a lot of bench time - -being yanked and such.

@BeddieKU23 Couldn't agree more. Having FB start instead of KJ gave KU an edge against any teams, IMHO. Combined the two? Can't wait till KJ is 100% again. We've seen them playing together very well. I remember KJ threw lobs/passes to FB. If coach can make best use of FB on offense, I'd say we can compete against any top teams. Defense-wise, he's a natural swatter.. and as a team we're still pretty good - Kenpom still has us at #6 IIRC.

My first loss as a student came in '88 to Kansas St. That broke a 50-60 home win streak! Mitch Richmond was really good for KState and they pulled away at the end. All of the older folks started leaving early and we started chanting at them "don't come back, don't come back"!

@wissox avenged in the tournament when K St fell to Kansas in the Elite 8 that year and Richmond shot 28%.

I’m friends with Zeke and Juan on Snapchat. I usually send them up lifting meme and such they respond fairly often. Juan the other night asked if I could deliver him the pork chops I was cooking. Told him they’d be too cold by the time I made it lol.

I also feel like shak was pretty meh in his minutes vs houston. He looked like he was playing good d, but that dude he was guarding was getting whatever shot he wanted and making them all right over the top of him. Plus he seemed a little loose with the ball more that a couple times. Could he have inbounded the ball better than zeke, probably... Remember how bad Och was at inbounding? Wonder how they practice those situations. Was certainly a mess. Maybe Hunter should inbound on those?

Time for a friendly wager when Wisconsin visits them this week? :). I'm a bit nervous about that one as a I should be. Badgers are playing very well right now, but so are the Terps. Home court probably tilts it your direction.
