Tonight's Huge Game!
Feb 01, 2017 11:03 AM #1

Biggest game of the year by far tonight.

Scott Drew jokes, jabs whatever else aside this is the best team KU will face all year before the tournament (and possibly all year). Put away all your perceptions of Baylor, they are in fact as good a team as KU or better. When was the last time that was ever possible...Never.

So how does KU win tonight?

Baylor plays that Zone but they have actually played more M2M then I've ever seen.

Baylor plays at one of the slowest paces in all of College Basketball and rebounds the ball extremely well.

That means KU will have to win the slow game. If KU could force a lot of turnovers as WVU did that would really help change the dynamic of the game. If KU doesn't force turnovers its going to be a long night.

My biggest question for tonight is who guards Jonathan Motley?

The answer is nobody if your wondering. We don't have anyone who can match up with him. We will see a lot of double teams which means rotations will have to be strong. Coleby will have to be used for his fouls, but the problem is Motley makes his FT's. The only real weakness for Motley is that he is foul prone. The key for KU would be to get him into foul trouble in the first half.

Their other big, Jo-Lual Acuil Jr is the best shot-blocker in the Big-12 and maybe the country. At just under 3 blocks a game he is the biggest reason Baylor has been a stingy defensive team all season.

Having said all that I truly hope that the gym is rocking tonight to help this team get the W.

KU will need to make perimeter shots, make shots in general, limit turnovers and try and rebound at an even pace tonight. The margin for error is slim with a team like Baylor who doesn't push the pace and is able to win games with its defense. This is a true test for KU's offense and 4 guard set.

Let's get this W!!!

Feb 01, 2017 11:30 AM #2

Will Frank or Devonte' guard Lecompte? Josh is going to have to play at the level he did vs Kensucky and Svi must be on fire with his 3's. I hope that all the distractions the team has going against it will light the fire in their bellies. Vick - will he play?

Feb 01, 2017 11:39 AM #3

@RockChalkinTexas

I imagine Frank will be on Lecomte as we will need to use Graham's size to cover Freeman. If we mix up defenses again it will be a mute point.

of course Vick is playing. That was a straight up TMZ report

@BeddieKU23

No question that the winner of this game is in the driver's seat in relation to the conference title. I had hoped that ISU could beat WVU and set them back some but looks like Huggy will stay in the chase for the time being. You absolutely have to hold at home, beat the bottom half teams and steal a win or two from the top half teams on the road.

These are what I believe to be the critical games coming up and the chance of winning them:

  • Baylor 60%
  • At KSU 50%
  • WVU 55%
  • At Baylor 40%
  • At OSU 55%

I believe the toughest game will be agains WVU. The KSU can be a very close game, give how much KSU gets up for KU or KU might win it comfortably. We will know soon how well KU matches against Baylor and it will probably dictate how the game plays in Waco. I threw OSU in the mix because they seem to play KU tough at home and being the last game of the regular season might have a huge bearing on the final standings. Holding at home against Baylor and WVU are by far the most important games.

Feb 01, 2017 12:28 PM #5

@JayHawkFanToo

It's critical KU wins tonight. KU has the most road games remaining in all of the league. 3 of them as you noted are well known places KU loses.

Winning against West Virginia at home is the other critical game because West Virginia's schedule the rest of the way is extremely favorable to them.

The next 6 games or 17 days will decide the conference for KU.

Feb 01, 2017 01:33 PM #6

Baylor and Scott Drew have never won a game in AFH and most of the contests have not been close. Even though Baylor is full of studs I don't expect anything other than a KU win.

Feb 01, 2017 01:43 PM #7

@joeloveshawks

That is right, the average margin in the last 4 years in Allen is 16 points.

I don't think we can rely on that statistic going into tonight. Baylor is so much better then the previous 4 teams that have come into Allen.

I still expect us to win but the significance of this game is off the charts for both teams and that's what will make it a close game

Feb 01, 2017 01:48 PM #8

Yeah Motley is gonna have a huge game but I think KU can still win.

Feb 01, 2017 01:48 PM #9

@BeddieKU23 "I still expect us to win but the significance of this game is off the charts for both teams and that’s what will make it a close game."

Truer words were never spoken my friend!

Feb 01, 2017 01:50 PM #10

Baylor has a history of NBA (or NFL?) big men and we've prevailed against them all. Motley will get his. But that won't be enough for Baylor. If we win the backcourt fg% we win this one.

Feb 01, 2017 01:56 PM #11

@BeddieKU23 absolutely. Should be an awesome and tight game. We have the best backcourt in the country and best home court so I'm betting against Scott Drew yet again.

Rock Chalk.

Feb 01, 2017 01:59 PM #12

@joeloveshawks

I'll take those odds as well! :sunglasses:

Feb 01, 2017 02:24 PM #13

Baylor for sure, can not am I know will be over looked by the guys, They know they are a very legit threat, A couple of things that need to be brought to your attention just was the case with Kentucky, you say who will match up with Motley? - - -very true & all I have read and heard it's going to probably have to be Josh. - Yes could be trouble BUT just like was the case with Kentucky - - once again who is going to match up with Josh on the offensive end with Josh. - -Kentucky had no answer, Josh is a match up nightmare so that goes both ways for us who on Motley? - -them on Josh? - - -people speak of Baylor's rebounding and yes they do rebound well - - BUT in reality Ku rebounds the ball better then they do. - -KU averages 40 a game - -Baylor averages 38 a game so that's a wash.

Baylor still plays zone for the majority - - very suspectable to the three has been brought up multiple times - -you have to be able to hit but the open three from the corner is and has been there a lot all year long - -KU leading the big 12 in 3pt shooting could be if we are on not so good, - - -As far as the back court - -I'll take our backcourt ALL DAY LONG against theirs hands down. - -ya they play some man, GOOD - -play man to man I pray they play man to man against us - don't get me wrong - Baylor is very very good - BUT as long as we have Josh, Frank, Devonte, Svi -- playing at the phog - - I'll take my chances any day of the week. - - I'M seeing a KU win anywhere from 6-10 pts - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Feb 01, 2017 02:27 PM #14

@BeddieKU23 Yep! Another big test tonight for KU. Gonna be a good game

Feb 01, 2017 03:04 PM #15

@JayHawkFanToo "So, you're saying there's a chance?"

Feb 01, 2017 03:31 PM #16

I hope Baylor's team managers remembered to pack their big boy highlighter unis because this will be the most ridiculous environment the Bears have played in to date with control of the conference at stake.

As for KU, every opponent circles us on their calendar. I truly, truly hope our boys circled this game on THEIR calendars - preferably in blood. They simply cannot afford to start this game as they did in Lexington because Baylor has the potential to bury us.

Here's to being the first team to 70!

Feb 01, 2017 03:32 PM #17

@approxinfinity exactly. As usual, the game will be won and lost on the perimeter.

Feb 01, 2017 03:42 PM #18

I think speeding Baylor up is one of the keys. Pressing occasionally is not a bad idea but we dont want to show too much because our return trip to Wacko is two and a half weeks out.

Feb 01, 2017 03:56 PM #19

75% from the FT line = KU win.

That - and if we score more points than they do....

Feb 01, 2017 04:09 PM #20

@HawkChamp that wingspan can't fly down court!

Feb 01, 2017 04:13 PM #21

If Baylor wins tonight, we would have to win in Waco to share the title. We are a 6 point favorite tonight and a win would open the door much wider for #13.

Feb 01, 2017 04:21 PM #22

We need to go zone again. I don't think we have anyone that can guard the post that Landen doesn't guard. But putting him in the middle of a 2-3 would let us have LL guard whoever gets the ball.

Personally, I think our zone is scary. It has 2 quick guards up top to pressure. And if either get the ball it is a layup on the other end. Then we have two 6'5-6'8 uberwings that are long and quick enough to be disruptive, rebound and double the post. Plus, we have LL to rebound the middle and body up the other teams bigs. And finally, our guys need some rest. Because our starting 5 is clearly our best lineup. And we need to play those 5 together as much as possible.

We will see what Bill does. I'm sure he is glad he had a few days to gameplan after the UK game.

Feb 01, 2017 04:26 PM #23

@Kcmatt7 I hope he's had time πŸ’£πŸ’£πŸ’£πŸŽ₯πŸ“ΊπŸ’‘πŸ”¬πŸ“°πŸ—žπŸ”’

Feb 01, 2017 04:35 PM #24

@BeddieKU23 What about JJ on motley? Hey gives up a couple inches but he plays bigger than he is, boards and boxes well. Maybe even get a couple over the back calls to put motley on the bench.

Feb 01, 2017 04:40 PM #25

@Kcmatt7 that's interesting because I also heard that Nova couldn't contain Carolina's fleet of skilled bigs because they weren't tall enough...we all know how that turned out.

If I were Self, I wouldn't use the zone until th tournament, like in the elite eight. Iirc he only used the triangle and two once during the regular season before Carolina in 2012.

Feb 01, 2017 04:45 PM #26

@HawkChamp Didn't they play some zone in that game?

Feb 01, 2017 04:48 PM #27

Just in case anyone wants to see the action live tonight...General Admission tickets are still available...frankly, I'm stunned.

https://ev10.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventInfo?ticketCode=GS%3AKU%3AB16%3A14%3A&linkID=kansas&shopperContext=&pc=&caller=&appCode=&groupCode=&cgc= β†—

Feb 01, 2017 05:20 PM #28

@Kcmatt7 yes. They fronted the ball side post man with a guard with a big behind which makes the entry pass very tough.

We should be able to beat Baylor at home playing normal man to man. They are not a high scoring explosive team like kentucky or carolina and they resemble Baylor teams from the past several years that we have beat. I think we should save the zone for down the road in crunch time, not for a home game.

Feb 01, 2017 05:21 PM #29

@Fightsongwriter JJ has good length, timing and quick hands. I agree with your suggestion

Feb 01, 2017 05:28 PM #30

@Fightsongwriter

If we play M2M, JJ on Motley is our only choice. I think we are going to have to play some heavy zone action here or shadow a wing off Wainright for the quick double when Motley gets the ball.

Honestly Motley is a huge mismatch for even Jackson. Jackson is a + defender but its different when your facing a 6'10 offensive machine. This is a matchup we need Jackson on the floor and not in foul trouble. Matching 2 guys that average 3 fouls a game a piece would seem to favor whoever can gain the advantage first. That's why if Jackson can leverage his quickness and draw fouls on Motley it will change the complexion of the game.

Feb 01, 2017 06:16 PM #31

@HawkChamp I mean we need to win this one. Whatever you have to do. I would definitely come out in a M2M and see if we can hold them down that way. But, if you have to go zone to win you have to. We are playing for tourney seeding. Especially against another team competing for a #1 seed.

This is the first year the #1 overall seed gets to pick their region. If Baylor ends up there they would more likely than not pick KC over Memphis. Winning this game has bigger ramifications than you might think.

Feb 01, 2017 06:27 PM #32

@Kcmatt7 Your right we for sure need the win, although there are people off other boards that would disagree with you. - They say they would rather play in Memphis not KC. - -let me apologize in advance if I mis understood you about Baylor wanting to play in KC. - -Personally I'm actually not that worried about tonight. - I think anywhere from 6-10 point win for us. - - - after watching them for the last 3 games or so - -they are struggling not to say they are not good - -they are - -just not that impressed right now-- - -especially at the Phog - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Feb 01, 2017 06:35 PM #33

@jayballer54 Yea I'm sure fans might want Memphis. But if I am the head coach, I'd rather play in KC. Players would be much more familiar with it. And since they are comparable flight prices and travel distances, I'm sure that it wouldn't be a hard sell to the AD on that.

And I wish I had your confidence. Baylor has, for the most part, upped their game against the top competition this year. Drew is doing one heck of a job rn.

Feb 01, 2017 06:52 PM #34

@Kcmatt7 agreed they are good. - -and to be honest - - I can't really pin point WHY I'm not to worried - -well maybe I just feel our back court and their suspectability to giving up open three's with that zone we have always done pretty well against their zone - -their zone leaves the corner Three wide open 80 % of the time I've seen itall year long - -We will be fine - -keep the faith - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Feb 01, 2017 06:53 PM #35

My prediction for tonight...

Faylor comes out on fire and we play catch up in a slow paced game with lots of fouls, but we pull closer at half time. Then we come out on fire after the half to take the lead back halfway thru. Then Faylor makes a good run and takes the lead again to all of our dismay and hand wringing. Then Frank, refusing to lose, takes over, making numerous clutch plays. Coinciding with Frank power moves, Drew makes some bonehead moves and snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

Some coaches have other coach's number - Izzo seems to be able to rattle Self. Bill will outcoach Drew yet again tonight, 69 to 63, for the home win.

Feb 01, 2017 06:58 PM #36

@StLJhawk

that prediction would help Mason's POY hopes. Another big time performance in a big game... He's down to 4 home games left, I hope he makes them count

Feb 01, 2017 07:03 PM #37

@BeddieKU23

"So how does KU win tonight?"

By controlling pace. Huggybear knew how to dismantle Baylor. They play "slow ball" so speed them up, force them into TOs. They have some young players that have never played in AFH. Crowd noise is a huge factor that when you combine it with speeding up the game, we quickly over-match Baylor.

Our player advantages are with Devonte and Josh. Josh needs to ignite us with some big plays. Devonte needs to be our guys focused on tempo.

If we have big games from these guys, I don't see how we lose. Frank is important, too. He fills a stat sheet. But the mechanics behind the game, especially concerning controlling pace, that mostly has to come through Devonte.

We could lose this game if we don't control tempo... very easily lose it. Or we could breeze through this game, just like WVU did, by pushing the pace that will create lots of TOs and easy buckets off of TOs, and by not allowing Baylor to run their offense effectively. Get out and pressure their guards, speed up the tempo... Baylor gets shut down.

Feb 01, 2017 07:07 PM #38

@JayHawkFanToo

I liked your breakdown of each game moving forward.

I'm not too worried about the OSU game because either the B12 championship has already been decided.... or if it all comes down to that one game I think our guys are ready to go down and finally win one in Stillwater.

We should win all of these games.... but doubtful we will.

I think our toughest games are at KSU and at home against WVU. I'm usually wrong, though.

Feb 01, 2017 07:22 PM #39

@drgnslayr

Baylor's starting 5 is made up 4th year players.

Lecomte is a player we might be able to speed up, he was horrible against West Virginia's pressure and this will be his first time in Allen. He's averaged over 3 turnovers in his last 4 games. That could be the key to stopping them.

I just hope our guys play free with passion and energy tonight. This seems like a can't miss game for KU to play its best.

We have to make perimeter shots and limit them from doing the same. Lecomte is their only legit consistent shooter from 3. Freeman is 5-21 in the last 5 games. Omot who is a 6'9 SF is a spot up shooter and has played a lot more lately and made 3 big one's in their comeback win over Ole Miss. I hope the crowd has an influence on their shooting.

Feb 01, 2017 07:27 PM #40

@BeddieKU23

Oh right.... Lecomte was a transfer, right? But he hasn't dribbled a ball in AFH before, right?

Pace of the game.... that will decide who wins tonight. That will decide which team shoots a high %, TO rate, etc.

Feb 01, 2017 07:51 PM #41

@drgnslayr said:

Pace of the game… that will decide who wins tonight. That will decide which team shoots a high %, TO rate, etc.

I hope you are right!

Feb 01, 2017 07:53 PM #42

@drgnslayr

This is why I had those games with low percentages, The toughest game might be at Baylor, depending ion the outcome of tonight's game. If we play like WVU did and run them off the court, the Waco game might be much easier; however, if the game is close or they win, the game in Waco will be a b*tc since it would most likely determine the League's champion.

Feb 01, 2017 08:29 PM #44

@drgnslayr I agree about the pace, but we should save a little something special for our trip to Wacko, like full court press, etc. We obviously need to win tonight, but the game at their place is important also.

Feb 01, 2017 08:31 PM #45

@HawkChamp we are saving a ready to be forgiven Bragg!

Feb 01, 2017 08:52 PM #46

@HawkChamp

The game tonight is a must. We don't want to have to win in Waco....

Feb 01, 2017 09:08 PM #47

@drgnslayr I am hoping we will be fired up and ready for a little revenge when WVU travels to the Phog. So I would have said that KSU and both Baylor games would be tougher........but we shall see.

Feb 01, 2017 09:10 PM #48

One at a time

Feb 01, 2017 09:23 PM #49

@Hawk8086

Actually... that is what scares me a bit.

I think we want to keep our emotions "close to the vest" while trying to dismantle the WVU press. I'm afraid the more emotional we are in that game, it could work against us. We don't want to be sensitive to becoming amped up because if it is the wrong kind of amping.... we are in trouble.

I think we need the mind of an engineer when beating WVU. Calculative, planned properly, schemed, steady execution. We are almost better to be a bit robotic... in other words.... play with great poise! Poise is what will beat WVU.

Feb 01, 2017 09:38 PM #50

Scott Drew listens to Nickelback.

Feb 01, 2017 09:43 PM #51

No doubt the Baylor Bears are flying high this year. Their team is loaded and has experience. They have the pieces to be one of the best teams in the country if they aren't already.

Yet one problem. ((((Scott Drew)))) The cat can recruit. I'll give him that. Yet is there a coach that has done less with the talent he recruits?

Baylor will come to play. Yet they only can go as far as their captain can take them. If I were Scott Drew I would attend one of Coach's camps. It would do him wonders. Might even make him one of the best in the country. Like I said the cat can recruit.

Feb 02, 2017 12:34 AM #55

Screw Baylor.

I may be wrong, but I can't get too worked up about playing a team full of kids so stupid or misguided that, of their own free will, they would live in Waco, Tx and play for Scott Drew.

No malice intended. Well, wait - that's really how i feel.

Feb 02, 2017 12:41 AM #56

@kjayhawks i got that one. No one else got it, but I got it. Good stuff, man.

Feb 02, 2017 01:25 AM #57

It seems like every year we play Baylor early and they are hot and supposed to be their year. But we end up spanking them. Will this year be different?

Feb 02, 2017 01:35 AM #58

Games in the last week against #7 WVU, #4 at the time Kentucky, and #2 Baylor. Tough stretch for sure.

Feb 02, 2017 02:20 AM #104

Coleby in early - nice position...

Feb 02, 2017 02:20 AM #105

@wissox he goes up so straight most of the time

Feb 02, 2017 02:20 AM #106

@Bwag He didn't appear at full speed to me to be going straight up.

Feb 02, 2017 02:20 AM #107

ha, travel again for faylor

Feb 02, 2017 02:21 AM #108

Getting hurt on the offensive boards....

Feb 02, 2017 02:21 AM #109

@DCHawker group rebounding

Feb 02, 2017 02:22 AM #110

ack coleby misses bunny underneath

Feb 02, 2017 02:23 AM #111

Coleby with a weak O rebound, then a strong rebound at the other end. He's playing pretty well so far.

Feb 02, 2017 02:23 AM #112

Our guys have to put a body on somebody. Baylor is too tall to play tappy ball with

Feb 02, 2017 02:23 AM #113

colbey looking decent, grabbing some rebounds

All we need is a few minutes from him where he doesn't hurt us - anything else is a plus. I think he's given us that and more the last couple of games...

Feb 02, 2017 02:24 AM #115

@StLJhawk Coleby had a pretty ugly shot a few possessions ago.

Feb 02, 2017 02:25 AM #116

@DCHawker And we need the refs to call a foul on Baylor when three guys converge on Colbey and maul him causing him to lose the ball!

@stoptheflop said:

So, he missed the rim by a foot - he's a little rusty....

Feb 02, 2017 02:25 AM #118

@stoptheflop
he totally did, and then couldn't hold a rebound, but still... he seems to be in the right place making some moves and grabbing some loose balls.

Feb 02, 2017 02:26 AM #119

POY

Feb 02, 2017 02:27 AM #120

frank sinks two FTs

Feb 02, 2017 02:27 AM #121

This is definitely the most solid, balanced Baylor team we've seen....

Feb 02, 2017 02:28 AM #122

mason misses bounce pass. and Vick is in there

Feb 02, 2017 02:28 AM #123

Was that not a walk?

Feb 02, 2017 02:29 AM #124

JJ has continued hitting from deep - huge bonus if he can keep that up...

Feb 02, 2017 02:29 AM #125

Is JJ becoming a 3pt threat?

Feb 02, 2017 02:30 AM #126

lots of faylor offensive rebounds for second chances. then josh answers!

Feb 02, 2017 02:30 AM #127

@Bwag said:

I'd still rather see him take it to the rim most times...

Feb 02, 2017 02:30 AM #128

@DCHawker if he is open, he needs to take it.

Feb 02, 2017 02:31 AM #129

@HawkChamp
definitely

Feb 02, 2017 02:31 AM #130

We need to keep pushing it at every opportunity and convert on these transition chances.

Feb 02, 2017 02:31 AM #131

refs are staying out of it tonight surprisingly

Feb 02, 2017 02:31 AM #132

@HawkChamp said:

Agree - just don't want him to lose the aggressiveness in taking it to the hole and drawing fouls...

Feb 02, 2017 02:31 AM #133

@DCHawker if he hits it, it counts as 3 vs 2 and it opens up driving lanes if they can't sag off him.

Feb 02, 2017 02:33 AM #134

Is everyone at the game tonight. Only a few of us here

Don't think he'll lose aggressiveness. He still takes it too hard some times.

2 threads and about equal numbers on both - maybe a couple of more here...

Feb 02, 2017 02:34 AM #137

@DCHawker

i know, dualing threads, maybe head over to the other one...

Feb 02, 2017 02:35 AM #138

Baylor's got it working right now. Killing us on the boards

Feb 02, 2017 02:36 AM #139

@stoptheflop We have to be able to score some down low and keep their bigs engaged. LL has missed a couple of bunnies - he simply won't go up strong...

Feb 02, 2017 02:39 AM #140

It looks like this thread is being abandoned....

Outside shooting has abandoned us.

Live and die by - we have no interior offensive presence unless JJ is posting up, and he can't do that against this team...

Feb 02, 2017 02:41 AM #143

This thread is losing bodies like our team to the other game thread.

Feb 02, 2017 02:43 AM #144

@Bwag Oh well - go with the flow I guess...

Feb 02, 2017 02:44 AM #145

Motley can't miss at the moment. 3 defenders and he makes it look easy

Feb 02, 2017 02:49 AM #146

Going, going....

Feb 02, 2017 02:52 AM #147

Baylor has 11 offensive RB's and we are shooting 35%. Kinda tells the story

Feb 02, 2017 02:54 AM #148

We got them right where we want them. Time to break out the can of whoop ass.

Feb 02, 2017 11:49 AM #149

@Crimsonorblue22

I know you missed Fran last night. Here's his butt hurt tweets from last night.

Fran Fraschilla ‏@franfraschilla 1h 1 hour ago
Trying to beat Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse is like trying to beat the "house" in Vegas. The odds are not with you.

Fran Fraschilla ‏@franfraschilla 58m 58 minutes ago
Anybody who has coached knows that there are some places that you just have to be 10 points better than the home team.

Fran Fraschilla ‏@franfraschilla 36m 36 minutes ago
My Manhattan team had 45 game win streak at Draddy Gym. You are always at an advantage when you are "supposed to win." Officials are human.

Feb 02, 2017 12:10 PM #150

@BeddieKU23

That last tweet from Fran you posted is downright offensive and implies a pre-arranged outcome and that officials are helping KU win at AFH. I had to go to tweeter to make sure the quotes around "supposed to win" were his and not added by you for emphasis...and they are indeed Fran's. KU's AD should demand a retraction and an apology from Fraschilla and request that ESPN no longer assigns him to cover KU games...no chance of that happening; Zenger's answer will likely be to black out every KU game Fraschilla announces. SMH.

Feb 02, 2017 12:59 PM #151

@BeddieKU23 Fran's not wrong about teams needing to be 10 points than KU to win in AFH, but it's also like that at Cameron, Dean Dome, and Rupp as well.

As for implying Baylor was playing 8 on 5, that's a load of crap. Refs were letting both teams play the entire game and were consistent about it. There was also no need to tighten up the whistle at any point since things never got chippy or even close to being on verge of being chippy. Last night's officials did a good job of establishing the type of play early they were going to allow early on and were consistent with that style of play all night which is what players and coaches want more than anything else out of the officials.

Feb 02, 2017 01:25 PM #152

@Texas-Hawk-10

Which is why his comments just reinforce what we know about Fran. He's literally an idiot that has a clear as day bias against KU.

2nd game in a row where officiating was really good.

Feb 02, 2017 01:29 PM #153

@BeddieKU23 and we know why crims can't stand the lil pecker head

Feb 02, 2017 01:30 PM #154

@Crimsonorblue22

I actually liked Vitale last night. At least he's passionate about basketball.

Feb 02, 2017 01:33 PM #155

@Texas-Hawk-10

I respectfully disagree. Teams need to be just 1 point better than KU to win at AFH. The advantage of home court is many time greatly exaggerated; most predicting system and Vegas assign only 2-3 point advantage to home court. The Vegas line opened at 5 and I believe it went up to 6, Sagarin's line was 3.8 points; KU won by 5.

Good teams do not get rattled by noise venues. KU went to Rupp, was down by 5 at the half and won the game. Against Baylor, KU was down 6 at the half and also won the game. Good team don't need luck...they make their own luck.

Baylor junior forward Johnathan Motley

On if the noise had any effect on their game:

"Not really, no."

Like I said, good teams and good players don't get rattled at away games. Just my opinion.

Feb 02, 2017 01:38 PM #156

@JayHawkFanToo

Lately it seems Bill Self's halftime speeches have had a big effect!

2 straight games down at half.. i wonder if he's got a book he chooses from

"well i haven't used soft lately". let's use that one.

Feb 02, 2017 02:25 PM #157

Good God! I can't remember a this many crappy announcers. We're stuck with Fran and Dickie V most of the time. Fran hates KU and Dick is a moronic ball of phlegm. Too busy throwing out catch phrases and raving about Cameroon to notice a top 3 matchup is actually a good game.

Is there no good announcers left?!?

Feb 02, 2017 02:32 PM #158

@dylans I think Vin Scully might be available if you can convince him to try college bb as a new gig.

Feb 02, 2017 02:38 PM #159

I think if Fred gets booted out he'd be excellent! He's knowledgeable, good looking, holly loves him, well mannered, guessing he wouldn't be a piece of πŸ’©

Feb 02, 2017 02:57 PM #160

@BeddieKU23

KU is in the drivers seat for an unprecedented 13th straight conference crown!

I say unprecedented because even though UCLA got 13, Wooden himself only got 9 or 10 of those.

Coach Self has them all!!

Feb 02, 2017 04:17 PM #161

@kjayhawks said:

I think you mean Hunter Pence.

Feb 02, 2017 08:45 PM #162

@Lulufulu

Wooden got 7 of them, The streak was achieved while in 3 different conferences and under 3 different coaches. Offcially, Coahc Self already has the record as a coach with 12 and Mark Few is second with 11. Here is a breakdown on the UCLA run...

  • Conference(s): Athletic Association of Western Universities, Pac-8, Pac-10
  • Years: 1967-79
  • Record: 360-30 (171-15 in conference)
  • Coaches: John Wooden, Gene Bartow, Gary Cunningham
  • AP first-team All-Americans: Kareem Abdul-Jabaar (1967, 1968, 1969), Sidney Wicks, Jamaal Wilkes, Bill Walton (1972, 1973, 1974), Dave Meyers, Marques Johnson and Dave Greenwood (1978, 1979).

UCLA's talent during that run was head and shoulders above everybody else. Coach Self had to replace entire starting lineups and beat powerful teams that include the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge, D.J.Augustine, Damion James, Kevin Durant, Tristan Thompson, PJ Tucker, Buddy Hield, Blake Griffin. Michael Beasley, Bill Walker just to name a few...
