KU basketball has announced a 6 year series with Missouri to renew the Border War for men's basketball.
The 6 game series begins on Dec. 12, 2020 with a game at the Sprint Center. There will 2 games each in Kansas City, Lawrence, and Columbia.

2022-23 (Columbia)
2023-24 (Lawrence)
2024-25 (Columbia)

@Kcmatt7 I've wanted this series to come back because there is nothing that compares to beating Missouri in anything. I'm just surprised that Bill Self signed off on it because of his past comments on playing meaningful games against Missouri. I always assumed we'd have to wait until Self left Kansas for there to ever be serious discussions about restarting this rivalry.

I personally think this is not the right move. KU gains nothing by playing Mizzou.

I do think this may be a ploy to increase demand for season tickets which ultimately ends up increasing donations for better tickets.
I know demand is down because they were selling them this year without even a Williams Fund Membership at all.

Finally. I guaranteed after the exhibition game that it was over and that the series would resume. The evidence was undeniable and clear.
This ends an embarrassing chapter of Bill Self driven butt-hurt. We played the part of the bitter and vindictive ex-wife. Not a flattering look. Read the utterly silly quote below. He says he knew the fans missed it. The players missed it. And he missed it. Yet one man deprived us of years of enjoying the rivalry. Just plain stupidity.

Bad move. I'd be fine with an occasional SEC-B12 challenge matchup every 4 or 5 years, but pumping up that crap program and their fan base for 6 games is stupid.

Self did leave the door wiiiiiide open to restart the series after we played the charity game, and that predated Long by a month or so.
Yes, I'm excited! If Bill Self leaves, and I think it's inevitable one of these years life as Jayhawk fans will go on. We'll find another coach. Heck, maybe Roy comes back for his swan song!
I feel like this helps Missouri more than it helps Kansas, so I'm not thrilled about it.

@DanR I agree 100%. I do believe this is self's last hurrah....but...this renewed rivalry has me in state of confusion
1st...the Mizzou animosity.
2nd...The date doesnt make sense at all. that's usually the game ku takes a road game so the kids can fly home on ku's dime. Small recruiting bennie that's now lost.
3rd...the length of the agreement is longer than any other contract. Pure speculation, but I'm presuming ku is figuring they are going to get hammered by the NCAA and will need these games as a cash grab until they get back on their feet.
I think there is a lot of reading into stuff going on here. Let's wait to see what happens with Bill and the penalties.
Though there is no doubt this is to stoke the fires of the fan base. It's clearly working.

I will say that I wish Mizzou hadn't left the B12 conference, because the KU-MU conference rivalry was probably the ugliest in the country--it actually meant something. But they fit in better with the SEC (Society of Ex Confederates) anyway.

Do you listen to sports talk Radio? How often do you hear Mizzou discussed compared to KU and KSU. It is not even close. It is not a false claim at all. I am out and about all the time in KC and I don't hardly ever see or hear people talking about Mizzou.
It is plain and simple really. KU as a program gains literally nothing from playing this game. You as a KU fan might, but not the program.
Also, from everything I have seen and read KU fans are pretty much against this and Mizzou fans are over the moon about it. That should answer any questions about this.

Regular people don't matter for this, the BMDs matter. This is a long term move but I would say Long has some ass kissing to do when it comes to the pleb portion of the fanbase (which I am definitely in, to be clear).
@BShark There is no doubt this is about money. There is already a FB game (s) in the works which will generate more money. It makes all the sense in the world for Mizzou to want to do this. I just do not see the value that this brings to KU.
I also think this shows Long does not have a very good pulse on the overall fanbase. He is getting bashed over this. On top of the Snoop debacle and this has not been his finest month or so.
I don't live in the state and never lived in KC so I don't have a good feel for the opinion of the fanbase, but I sure would like to have $10,000 to do a poll about it. These are broad generalizations and not aimed at any individual, but my sense is the more diehard fans are opposed and the more casual fans are for the Border War (I refuse to call it the Border "Showdown," that name is stupid). At the end it was so ugly that a lot of fans were happy to see it go on indefinite hiatus.

It's a no brainer good idea. A game to circle on the calendar every year. A game to look forward to. Although I try to watch every KU game, this one would draw more interest than a matchup against one of this years lightweights like whatever directional tennessee school we're playing.

Mizzou is always going to be apart of the city. It is the premier college in Missouri far and away. To think otherwise is silly. They will ALWAYS have a base of alumni in KC because of this.
If tons of money and extra exposure are literally nothing, than sure, KU gains literally nothing.
But I think you (and others) are blowing this WAY out of proportion. It is a single game a season against a program we have notoriously dominated.

Well, some opinions are right and yours is right.
No law against wrong opinions though, thankfully .. at least not yet.
I love the "opinions" that the rivalry doesn't do anything for us.
It is the one rivalry that I've been a part of as a fan, along with Royals/Yankees in the late 70s, that has bordered on hatred. With perspective, I don't really "hate" MU. I do "hate" them in the sports arena. Without perspective, as a kid, I felt that I really hated the Yankees (and MU at the time).
What does it do? It gets the blood flowing. It creates great enjoyment and great disappointment. That's being alive. And yes, we were all quite alive when we won that last game at AFH in 2012 vs. MU. And we were quite devastated when we lost in OT in 1997. I found myself during that 2017 scrimmage wanting to win that more than any other upcoming regular season game. Live and enjoy.
Something that was unjustly taken from us has been returned.

That will still hold true i believe, especially now that they have a decent coach. Cuonzo Martin is a man I've always enjoyed watching, all the way back to his high school playing days in Illinois.
If Missouri is a crap school then we're a crap school because they're just about evenly ranked academically according to US News and World Report. I hate them just as much as the next Jayhawk fan, they're right down there with the Packers, and Cubs, just below the Yankees on my hatred scale. But I want to play them.

Here's what is going to happen: KU will beat the tar out of the Slavers in all 6 games. The NCAA will rule that KU is too good and should be punished by vacating all the wins in the series.
I look forward to reviewing this thread in 6 years. Should be interesting to see how it plays out... and to see if which motivation for reviving the rivalry looks most likely in hindsight.

Donāt you know MU likes to claim Missouri was really anti-slavery? That the Tigers nickname came from a group abolitionists in or around Columbia ā all 10 of them.

One thing though. We know we will never be a game on the way to an MU final four. Over a century of incompetence assures us of that. But each day the coaches drive on Champions Drive. Like naming a street after Casper the friendly ghost. Fictional and lacking substance.
That 1964 indoor track championship remains the shining light for a self proclaimed softball school. And has been the shining light for now for over five decades. Quite an accomplishment to be sure.

Mizzou sucks at basketball. So everyone saying it is better than playing XYZ school is it really? This isnāt going to bolster KU resume for the tournament.
I watch every single KU game so I am not going to circle this game. I look forward to playing Duke, UK, Villanova, Sparty, etc... will I watch the game sure like I said I watch all of them.
But what is the downside for KU?

We have to associate ourselves with the slavers again. Weakens our strength of schedule since we always play a better team than them at Sprint. It costs a lot of money to disinfect Allen Fieldhouse. Iām disappointed. My distant relations in NE KS that were MU fans were beginning to watch KU for lack of options and the MU garb was disappearing. Damn, itās back. Might as well schedule WSU as long as the money grab is in.

I've been thinking about this more and more since its been announced......Yep still love the idea. I hope football joins, I miss the intense games. The KSU rivalry isn't really a rivalry. KSU has won like 90% of the football games since 1990 and KU has done the same in Basketball. That and being in state, it's like beating our little brother when he gets cocky. My hatred for Fizzou goes far beyond athletics. The worst place I've ever been in this country is Springfield, Missouri or Columbia, Missouri. Abouslutely zero diversity, zero teeth, an abundance of meth and incest. Sadly that isn't an exaggeration.
Speaking of teeth or lack there of. Missouri did invent the toothbrush, because if it was invented anywhere else it would be a teethbrush.
They left the Big12, so I don't really care if we play them or not. Tradition meant nothing to them, so ("not all of them wanted to leave the Big12, Marco!") why should we renew the series. They've been nothing special since the days of Norm - coach is right, we stand to gain nothing from it (Machiavelli).

It helps Missouri more than KU, but it does help KU. I hate MU, but the only reason not to play them is spite...Iām ok with that too though. The games are scheduled Iām just going to enjoy them for what they are.
