I really hope the kid sticks it out until he can play meaningful minutes. I hated to see McBride leave under those circumstances...

Given the McBride situation where we heard the right things about him and then he quit you never really know until a kid gets on campus.

Bill did have this to say though...

“Latrell is very aware we were recruiting other guys,” Self said. “He’s happy with whatever role he will have early in his career. We see him as being a player that will help us by his energy and by his presense in our program. We think he’s going to develop into a really solid Big 12 player.”

Some comments from Bill.

@focojayhawk Who is the PG that went to Indiana State? I was looking at their recruiting classes and couldn't find one however midmajor recruiting info isn't always 100% on sites and I trust people with first hand knowledge more.

I don't think anyone hates this signing. He looks like a stud on film.

Bryce is 1A and this kid is 1B for me in terms of excitement. Gethro and Jossell are projects of varying degrees whereas Tyon and Bryce should contribute next year.

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 06:48 PM

@focojayhawk Thanks for all the insight. Definitely sounds like he will need a RS year to get stronger as suspected.

If this connection leads to Harrison Ingram it is a HUGE win. He has already taken official visits this year as a JR so hopefully KU gets really involved there.

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 05:10 PM

Guys....

Jossell grew up with Kansas as his dream school. He never really thought he'd wind up playing there and didn't have any real connections to KU. He just always was intrigued by the place ever since he first saw a KU game on television while watching sports with his grandfather growing up.

“There’s just something about Kansas," he said. "The way the arena looked, the way everything looked, I would always just run in there whenever my grandpa said KU was on TV and I just fell in love with it.”

So when the time came this week to tell his grandfather about the KU offer and his plans to sign, needless to say it was a big moment for both of them.

"He was so excited," Jossell said. "He said he could barely even focus when he was at work. It was great to hear that and a great moment for both of us."

@BShark - Latrell does have a motor and plays with passion, based on various videos. However.... his 3 pt shot looks like it starts too low. Maybe not enough arm strength yet, but I’d bet that gets retooled.

Edit: and an 84% FT shooter on 349 attempts over the last 3 years. Maybe he can tutor Doke? 🤫

Yeah he is a good shooter but I noticed the low release as well. I'm guessing the plan is for him to redshirt so he can have time in the weight program and with the coaches in general. With Harris, Garrett, Thompson and Tyon available there isn't a pressing need at the 1/2 spots.

His JR year highlights. At 2:45 or so he has a completely ridiculous rebound. Easy to see how the staff sees something in him after watching.

How’s his defense? Defense is a sure fire way to get onto the court with Self as the coach. I worry about his length being a liability, but it wouldn’t be if he’s quick enough with a high b-ball IQ. He’s more of a curiosity to me than the other recruits. I don’t see it yet, but time will tell.

His HS coach said he is willing to take charges and gets in passing lanes to deflect and steal balls. So the effort is certainly there.

On another board the guy down in Texas (a teacher down there) that had Jalen Wilson info had this to say

"I'll be able to go watch Jossell a few times this season. He is in the district (what you northerners call conference) with Jalen Wilson's high school. I have a few contacts in that district, and they all say the same thing, the kid is a baller..........but they didn't think he was a Kansas level baller.

Maybe the staff sees something special. I hope so. "

It sounds like he has improved from last season so hopefully the reports over the course of this season are even better. :)

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 02:44 PM

Jayballer out here calling a kid a liar. Okay...

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 01:50 PM

According to Jossell Missouri and NC State among others were very interested but then...

"I had like a lot of interest from some good D-I schools," Jossell said. "It was a lot, and they were all pushing. I had them all down at my school within a span of three weeks. Then Kansas came in, and when Kansas came in, I don’t know if they got scared or whatever like that, they were still texting me, but it was like they knew the big dog was in the house.”

@jayballer73 Sounds like the offers were coming until Bill shut the door.

He was being recruited but because he wasn't a nationally known recruit it wasn't really being reported on.

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 04:44 AM

This really stood out to me from Tait's story...

After receiving an official scholarship offer on Tuesday night, Jossell’s family went crazy, celebrating the news and knowing that the young guard was Kansas-bound.

“I don’t think it really has sunk in yet,” said Jossell, who was named after former NBA standout Latrell Sprewell. “But the feeling I got when they gave me the offer, I was stuck. Even though I knew it was coming, when it finally happened, it was crazy. My whole family... It was lit in the house and it was like smiles the rest of the night.”

Latrell Jossell • Nov 15, 2019 04:23 AM

40% trey gun last year and has apparently worked very hard to improve his shot. Sounds like a junkyard dog according to his HS coach.

He has improved and grown a bit. That said he isn't cracking the rotation next year. Which is fine because even with Dotson going pro we have a lot of good guards and wings.

For what it's worth...one of my best friends from college (who is a fellow KU grad) is the head coach at the D-2 school that is the other listed offer (Dallas Baptist). He loves Jossell's game, but said he isn't the kind of recruit that would get fans excited. That said, he couldn't believe that Jossell didn't have at least mid-major D-1 offers. Apparently there might be an AAU teammate of his that KU is after too.

My buddy thought he was in pretty good shape to get him and then KU spent a whole day with him in Dallas. He thought it was just a casual visit and then he saw the same tweet we all did announcing KU's offer. We were texting today and he's hoping Jossell will go the hat route and have the KU and DBU hats on the table and then to have the press release say 'Jossell chose Kansas over Dallas Baptist'.

Thanks for the scoop. Also the last part was hilarious. I wonder where one can buy a Dallas Baptist hat. XD

We've already signed his AAU teammate Gethro Muscadin.

Scott Chasen talked to his HS coach as well as Gethro and had this to say: Expecting an announcement tonight, possibly a signing in the morning. Talented kid. He's worked on a lot of aspects of his game, and he's the type of kid that gets others invovled and doesn't mind sacrificing his body. Takes charges, stays late at practice help teammates. Helped build a good HS culture. KU has been on him for a little while, but sounds like he was a late find into this year.

Glad to know your buddy agrees with @Kcmatt7 and myself. The lack of almost any offers is bizarre. I am hoping post commitment we get a story or two about that.

But wait there's more!

"To me, if he was here now, he’d be playing all the minutes now. He’s really a good player. And to think that he just grew up down the street and is just now blowing up like this over the last 12 months is pretty amazing. … What people are saying about him that follow that game are raving about him and deservedly so. He’s a 6-foot-7, long, do-everything guard."

Gethro Muscadin commits to KU • Nov 14, 2019 08:29 PM

Some quotes from Bill.

"At 6-foot-10, this past summer Gethro showed everybody that he can shoot the basketball with range. He’s a runner. He’s a jumper. He’s a shot blocker.”

"Gethro to me is one of those guys, kind of like a Markieff Morris — how good can he get? I mean his ceiling is high. He can run, he can jump. He made two or three 3s the other night in his high school game and he plays in a highly-competitive situation. He’s going to be really good. And he’s active and a shot blocker. He’s not ready yet, but he’s going to be really good."

2020 Recruiting • Nov 14, 2019 08:21 PM

Quote from Bill on the current class

"I thought it was more important this year than most just because of the unknown that waits out there," Self said. "And I don't mean unknown as being bad, unknown can be positive. You just don't know when this will be concluded. ... To have three guys like this jump on board now I think is a pretty strong move on their part, but also, more importantly, it helps us out and changes in my opinion what has been a fairly negative narrative that has been put out about us."

"There’s been a lot of years, a lot of years, where during the fall period we [don’t] even have what’s thought to be a highly, nationally-ranked class," Self said. "And I’m not saying this ranks up there with [the Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, Wayne Selden class], but I do think considering everything that’s happened, I think it’s a terrific class. All three were our main targets. I don’t think we could have recruited better than we did at the respective positions that we were recruiting."

2020 Recruiting • Nov 14, 2019 08:19 PM

A few things...

Good point from FAN214 let's wait and see how he does. The staff seems to be high on him. We don't know if he will wash out, maybe he has a Lucas/Mitch level love for the program. From what I've heard this is pretty close to the case. But you never know how kids react to Bill until they are on the team and at practices. We heard all the right things about McBride and he quit on the team. The good news is it's not like we are counting on this kid for anything right away. He has time to improve.

Plus right now of all times I find it hard to take shots at any kid that still wants to be a Jayhawk.

@Kcmatt7 Respectable AAU numbers maybe they were quite bad before last circuit, idk. Reaaaally hope we find out more after his commitment. There could be any number of reasons why he was under-recruited. For whatever anyone wants to say about Garrett he is a D1 level player and was almost invisible before KU got involved. There has to be a story with this kid.

Bill Self and undersized athletic point guards, name a more iconic duo.

I just don't really think to much of a chance now with Bryce being here, ad Harris into the mix next year. I know people will say don't think Harris being in the mix is going to come into play that much , and not really sure how they gonna play Bryce, - -are we playing Bryce as a Combo - - or are we going to insert him as a PG ? - I just don't have much confidence in landing him. - However I read somewhere that they said Arkansas was at it's limit - -couldn't swear to that but what was stated.

Starting at point guard a Freshman from Columbia Missouri, number 3...Dajuan Harrrrrisssssss.

Having a hard time figuring out this out. They currently have 6 guards on the roster.

Guards: Harris, Thompson

Guard-ish: Garrett, Braun

Wings/4s: Agbaji, Enaruna, Wilson

Never hurts to have more actual guards as we have seen this year.

Found out IHCC has played 4 games so far.

Tyon's cumulative stats: 32/65 shooting, 10/25 from three, 19/30 ft.

Some per game numbers: 23 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.75 spg, .75 bpg.

Not sure how they run offense but he doesn't have many assists and is turning it over three times a game. Definitely looks like a wing player to me.

Bryce hopes he has made it so other players will be willing to look at Kansas differently now that he’s taken the chance. “I’m sure we have some more spots that can be filled,” he said, “and I love to fill them with some great players.”

Basically, he is ALL JAYHAWK. I'm excited for him and the team.
