I wasn't thrilled with the offensive gameplan early on. Doke was hacked a lot but even they call them, the gameplan is still sending Doke to the line? The offense flowed much better when it was predicated on driving it, and when Self played one big.
Self has quite a pickle on his hands here. He has a 7 foot beast that is a liability on defense, and two more lumbering bigs that would expect some kind of tick. Dedric being an AA candidate (though he sure doesn't look like it) and big Dave a McDAA (in a very weak class outside of the top 5 but still).
I've been pissing and moaning about the defense in the modern basketball thread, lol.
He tends to be better when he elevates on his jumper, and when KU is playing less athletic competition. He was definitely guarded on some of those looks though. He was, as the kids say, feeling it.
@BeddieKU23 Yep, probably the only school on his list where that is the case. At KU he might have even been a RS candidate.

Well, Dedric has to play, he's too good not too. But he needs to play within the offense. He only took 6 shots tonight, but most were forced. The missed lay-up was a good take but super brutal to miss it.

I don't think you can work out how slow Doke and Dedric are. Maybe mask it a bit, but they aren't getting faster.
Also Vermont is sub 100 on kenpom. They are okay. Better than struggling with Denver like KSU did.

@kjayhawks It's the style Doke is used to. He thrives in it. I get that we have a lot of bigs but man, I'd consider mostly rotating Dedric and Doke at the 5. Maybe play with Dedric and Doke 5-10 minutes a game. Run out Garrett/Mitch/KJ at the 4.
Trying not to overreact to two games but KU has been abused defensively.

Not true. I checked for you. Had a 7 make game on 13 attempts.
Minute distribution was interesting tonight. Didn't like Garrett playing 26 minutes.
Grimes played over 30 minutes again which I like.
Mitch played 6 minutes and KJ 3.
Moore surprised me, 21 minutes.
Going small saved the game imo.
Beyond the defensive and speed issues, I think the biggest problem for Dedric tonight was trying to force things. If he plays within the flow of the offense he will be fine on that end.

Something to keep an eye on. Dedric and Doke both expect minutes of course. Dedric needs to be waaaay better than tonight.
Can KU afford to play Doke and Dedric at the same time? I would argue not in 90% of games. Self will do it though, to the detriment of this team.
