Mexico should absolutely beat South Korea.
Yes, jury is out, I don't think so, yes, good enough considering the overall talent plus defense.

Belgium is so good. Lukaku is a beast! Not only are they timing their passes perfectly going downfield, they're avoiding offsides, then getting 5 steps past their defender and then breaking down the goalie 1v1.
They could have legitimately scored 8 or 9 goals today. I can appreciate that neither team camped in that game.
Belgium are firmly my 2nd choice team, just love how they play. Plus the whole country is barely more populated than the NYC area which makes their depth of talent quite remarkable.
KU has landed multiple players from IMG. Actually don't see this as a huge issue.
@HighEliteMajor I would hope for better. Oladipo's Fr season wasn't that good.
Wondering if Newman will get drafted. He still made the right decision to go pro either way.

I was surprised to see Trae Young go so early, figured he’d be around 11
The fact that he went to a team with a bird mascot is amazing.
from his twitter today
He looks great but I've been fooled before. I will wait and see.

All Knucklehead Team for KU Under Self: G Tharpe G Vick G Greene F Bragg F Preston. Off the bench, second teamers based on level of issues, G Taylor G Adams, G Morningstar, F Ma. Morris, F Jackson.
Adams is a first teamer hahaha. This could honestly be its own thread...
@Crimsonorblue22 exactly. Self said recently in an article that agbaji was a take because Vick was leaving.

It was said he needed to help earn money for his family🤷♀️
He has a kid that his mom currently pays for.
BTW fair points everyone. I just think KU has a ton of options already and he could muddy the waters. Also coming back but not starting could cause issues.

If Vick joins KU we will leapfrog UK again.
I disagree. I think he could make KU worse.
SkinnyKansasDude said:
So does everyone think our chances of winning a national title increase with Vick or decrease?
Doesn't move the needle much imo.
The heat has been brutal here lately that's for sure.

Delusions?

@JayHawkFanToo decommitted yesterday.
@justanotherfan agreed. Taking another wing who’s probably better off redshirting is meh. Let’s see what we can pull in the 2019 class or the mid-year transfer market.
Leaving the spot open might help with recruiting too. I would much rather the staff make a big push to sign someone like Sam Williamson early than add a warm body for this season.

Self articulated what I have been saying for months - Grimes is just such a complete player at this stage in his career. He doesn't have any major holes that will keep him from being effective, while also having the athleticism and youth to continue to improve.
Quentin Grimes is a tremendous player, and it looks like he is getting better. Get him around some better players where he doesn't have to do everything and I think his passing and defensive abilities will show up even more. Give him a PG like Dotson to set him up for more open looks than he ever got in HS and I think that three point percentage ticks up a bit.
One thing that sticks out to me is that he is able to maintain body control even when he gets off balance. He can take a bump or power through a foul and not lose his ability to finish, or if no foul is called, the ability to still hit a teammate.
His vision is underrated right now because he was such a dynamic scorer in HS, but he could be (and I think will become) an elite PG at the next level - probably will take 4-5 years, but I can see him developing into an All-Star caliber player in the NBA.
He's going to start and it's cute that there are people that think he won't.
I have noted his body control and old man game before. He can do it all and is, above all, a basketball player. Which is a point I often harp on. Sam Cunliffe for example is an athlete playing basketball, not a basketball player. See also: Jamari Traylor, Lagerald Vick.
Dedric and KJ are hoopers too.
Defense was a problem all last season for KU. Good shooting and coaching helped mask it a bit.

I’m 90% sure it’s this guy. But don’t look for KU to be involved this late. Better off holding it open. https://247sports.com/player/mickey-pearson-46035661 ↗
Yeah at this point there are good options for 2019, no sense taking filler now. Already have enough guards that some won't even play.
@JayHawkFanToo That's not how I read it. We will see though.
Paul Pierce: "Watch out next year -- KU is going to have a squad. Rock chalk."
@JayHawkFanToo Well, the red card was very deserved. That guy lost his mind.

Herrera was gone at the end of the season either way. Would have liked to see them get a better return for him, though.
I find it hard to believe they couldn't get a better haul than that but oh well.
Japan has stunned Colombia 2-1.
JayHawkFanToo said:
Sherron and Tyshawn were pretty dang fast too.
Yeah, that's what makes Dotson so special. Pretty sure he is faster.
Update: They got Ayton too.
Something is brewing.
@justanotherfan Doke is definitely a plodder. I think Dave can get up and down a bit. Hoping Silvio can play (but not expecting it).
Dotson looks like the fastest guard Self has ever had at KU w/ the ball.

Self has some pieces, that's for sure...

I don't know if we've signed a guard as ready as he is to compete and impact the game.
JJ and Wiggins. But other than that...and of course Grimes is much more of a guard than those two.

Some great upsets today. Mexico beating Germany was amazing. Mexico looked like the better team. Their offense was electric consistently getting downfield faster than the Germans. The Swiss tying Brazil was also a surprise. Neymar seemed to feel the pressure as much as Messi did yesterday.
Yeah Mexico shredded German'y midfield. It's Low's own fault really for playing Khedira....
@KUSTEVE Grimes had a great tournament but his three point shot was off. Tbf it is from longer range than the college line plus so many games in a short span but still 6/25 is just not good.

Just watched the replay. A couple observations:
-Grimes is going to be really good. He’s way more advanced than almost anyone on the court. I’ll be curious to see how his game translates against better athletes in college. Well-deserved MVP though.
-Hurt and JRE are almost must-gets. Hurt is so skilled, and a better defender than I thought. He’s a ways away, but will be a really good college player. JRE is coldly efficient and had a great motor. He and Hurt would be great complements. Honestly, Hurt/McCormack/JRE would be the best frontcourt in the country, and that’s not even including Silvio.
-I want Cole Anthony baaaad. He’s as most complete a guard as I’ve seen in awhile. No idea if we have a shot at getting him (sounds like it’s a pretty locked down deal so far), but he and Dotson would be dirty.
-There are a few under the radar types that impressed me: Watts and Josiah James especially. James reminds me of Marcus Garrett somewhat.
-What happened to bigs? This team was pretty thin up front. How are Bacot and Hepa ranked that high?
-Another reminder of how good Self is. USA wasn’t great for awhile, then found another gear late. He’s probably the best at maximizing talent.
Yeah I was not impressed with Hepa. Also by going to Texas he didn't exactly pick a great coach to help out his offensive game.
Crimsonorblue22 said:
If we had hurt and earl, I'd play them both at 3 and 4. Suffer on D, but they both board and shoot so well.
I think at the college level you can easily play them together at 4/5. Interchangeable on O, primarily JRE at the 5 on D but can switch.
@Texas-Hawk-10 One open scholarship but in general yeah. I fully expect Doke, Dedric and Grimes to go. Silvio situation is still murky.

Seems okay.
@HighEliteMajor There are definitely enough post options that it's okay if Doke has to be taken out in some circumstances. Even w/o Silvio imo. Self has a lot of tools in the box this year, will be interesting to see how he uses them. He basically had zero choices to make the last two seasons and the last season he had a lot of options I disagreed with some of the choices he made.
AskCrims
A full day later and he is still retweeting stuff about his offer. Had a picture of EJ in the latest one (Strawther is also from Vegas). :eyes:
@jayballer73 Talking about Strawther, not Anthony. Duke is the large favorite for Anthony.
@HighEliteMajor Speaking of not in a vacuum there is also the aspect of who the opposition has committing these fouls. Certainly, they don't want their starting post players fouling out. If they put in scrubs then those players will have to play some amount of offense. And of course, they can't foul Doke literally every possession because of course Self will take him out at some point and as you point out with 80 possessions that would be 16 players fouling out.
All in all fouling Doke sometimes isn't the worst idea, and it will happen late in games if Self leaves him in. They need to work on his free throw form for crying out loud.
Kevin Durant in his years before joining GS 1.9 4.8 .384. That includes a pretty rancid rookie year and his first two years skew his attempt numbers down. Durant has always been a great shooter. His last year in OKC was better than his first year in OKC from range, pretty easily. Last three years at OKC 3PA per game: 6.1, 5.9, 6.7. First two years at GS 5, 6.1. So, did going to GS really fundamentally change Durant? I would say no.
Lebron for his career 1.5 4.4 .337.
Lebron definitely didn't have the shooters that GS has, which I believe is what you were saying. Curry is a transcendent shooter and Klay isn't very far behind. Durant for his position and size is very good too. It's a pretty specially constructed roster. Houston had a real chance to beat them though, if CP3's hamstring wasn't cursed. I really would have liked to have seen that. GS still might have won, but it would have been MUCH more interesting.

I would recommend getting familiar with Julian Strawther (2020).
ya? - -pretty good player huh? - - think we got a legit shot?
Top 10 in his class, great talent. Called KU his dream school after the offer and he already has an Arizona offer and Duke/UK sniffing around. If KU presses hard and makes him a top priority chances seem good.
FarmerJayhawk said:
He and Greg Brown are legit KU options in 20. Also not a shock, but sounds like the U18 targets have really liked playing for Self.
Yeah, encouraging stuff there. I'm half wondering if KU has a shot at Anthony now. Would be insane.
@jayballer73 Got a real chance at Hurt.

I think that's a pretty good idea. The only problem is that they would have to distinguish a kid being forced out or not, which is awkward for the kid if that is public information.
