This team is built to win it all. Doke and Dedric combo is going to be down right dirty.

This team excites Self.

One last nugget from the article

Self’s early impressions from summer practices: “It is much harder to score because the court seems more crowded.”

There’s a hint of joy in Self’s voice when he says this. Obviously he would like to have better shooters to make it easier to space the floor, but he’s also enjoying the possibility he could have an elite defense again. Last year’s group, which finished 47th in adjusted defensive efficiency, was his worst defensive team in his 15 years at Kansas. “I think when you score easier, sometimes guys take the foot off the gas defensively a little bit,” Self says. “Our foot should be down the whole time defensively, because we are not going to be a team that can run bad offense and come away with three points like we’ve been able to last year.”

Dedric • Jun 29, 2018 04:07 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 The gist is that Dedric is a complete badass. Best player on next year's team by a large margin, best shooter (Moore noted as the 2nd best shooter) and Dedric is one of the best passers Self has ever seen. Not for a big, for any player he has coached.

Another quote: “Dedric is not the quickest-twitch athlete and he’s not the highest jumper, but he has great feel. We’ll be able to run offense through him as much as any big guy we’ve had here.”

Assuming he has the same roster, similar results to what he’s had at KU. If anything they’d be more rested most years as the SEC sucks in general.

I think the SEC is different. More athletic teams than the Big12 but worse coaching.

THE SQUID FEELS THE HEAT • Jun 27, 2018 05:58 PM

So this thread brings up an interesting question.

Would Self do better in the same situation as Calipari?

Many people, particularly fellow KU people, would assume yes but I say not so fast. Self's best teams in terms of tournament success outside of the 08 title team have been pretty lean, but experienced.

@JayHawkFanToo

Given the issues with the KU program (no coach has lasted more than four seasons since Mangino) it will be hard to attract a top coach.

KU will have a hard time finding a replacement with the revolving door of coaches and the constant change of direction for the program.

It will be rough but I am convinced just about anyone would be better than Beaty at this point.

Now, if it means half the roster defects....

Surprised there wasn't a thread about this yet.

This happens everywhere, and is by no means the first high profile case of it at Duke (look at Ojeleye and Thornton) but there is still no chance this really effect EMPEROR K.

I wonder if history likely will add “internet bullying” and “politically correct speech” to “conspiracy” and “conspiracy theory” and “pornography”, as backdoors reputedly used by authoritarian evil doers to constrain the available explanations?

Ok...

Texas Hawk 10 said:

@BShark Self doesn't typically redshirt freshmen though. The only guys I can think of who redshirt as freshmen were Traylor and McLemore because of academic issues. I believe everyone else who has taken a voluntary redshirt at KU has done it their 2nd season or later on campus.

Oh no mistake it would up to Agbaji. Lucas took one his first year.

justanotherfan said:

@jaybate-1.0

There's a pretty distinct split. Some feel that his gameplans are overly structured, and that makes it difficult for guys to be successful outside of that scheme. This is similar to the "system QB" or "system WR" that racks up good numbers within that specific system, but can't match that success in a different environment. That is a concern raised by some NBA people because Self is very strict about his system.

There are others that are not as concerned about that, to be sure. But it is interesting that lots of KU players have slid in the draft, and I can't think of the last time a KU guy went higher than expected.

I think the way KU has played the last two years should help in this regard. Self was too rigid before, but he is changing.

Five Big Questions • Jun 25, 2018 08:58 PM

justanotherfan said:

@KUSTEVE

I would make one change to your starters:

Dotson/Grimes/K. Lawson/D. Lawson/ Doke

Sub Moore in for Dotson if you prefer, but the bottom line is that KJ probably starts and defends the other team's best player, unless that player is a true post. He gives KU the same versatility that Jackson did on the defensive end with his size and quickness.

I hope this is the starting line-up. Garrett and Moore will be the key bench guards and if they do start, the non-starters from the first group there are the key bench guards. I just don't see Cunliffe playing much at all and Agbaji should take a RS.

Five Big Questions • Jun 25, 2018 04:27 PM

"K.J., he's just a big guard," Self said. "I look at him as a guard that would be a guy like we played [Josh Jackson]. He's an intangible guard. He really understands the game. Dedric, on the other hand, is different. Without question, he's our best passer. He's a low-post player with guard skills. We'll play big. It allows you to space the floor at all times, invert the floor, like Villanova did. The biggest thing is you can run your offense through your bigs."

@drgnslayr

Last season Coach Self did not have the luxury of mixing and choosing player to get optimal chemistry since the roster was extremely limited. Fortunately Coach Self has now a number of players he can use in various combinations to get the perfect chemistry going.

There will be some growing pains early on but hopefully Self gets optimal line-ups figured out by Feb/Mar.

Five Big Questions • Jun 25, 2018 01:53 PM

BeddieKU23 said:

  1. Huge concern, maybe the biggest other then chemistry. A game that's transitioning to 3 pt shooting and we have a roster reverting back to the old ways. I guess that's why Self gets paid the big bucks to figure it out.

Lets say Dedric can be around 36% (doable, imo assuming he only takes good looks), Moore gets to 38-39% with a year off to train and playing under Self instead of LOLCUONZOLOL, Grimes is around 37% and Garrett drags himself up to low 30s? The wildcards imo are Dotson and KJ. I think the team is so good these 3 point numbers can be overcame. The bigger issue imo is overall youth and replacing almost all the rotation players.

JayHawkFanToo said:

@BeddieKU23

Dedric will likely be a college basketball star but he is also a "tweener" with limited athletic ability that hopefully Hudy has helped improve over the last year. In the NBA he would be overpowered by bigger, more athletic players so his NBA potential is very limited.

Exactly. It's a fortunate situation for KU.

@HighEliteMajor His point about Nova is there is a rankings cover-up.

Roy winning a NC with the 154th 3 point shooting team doesn't fit the narrative that Self is a God. Please keep up. Please ignore that they beat their final 3 opponents that tournament, all very good teams, while going 3-15, 8-21 and 4-27 from 3. Stats and facts are the enemy. Expand your brain.

@JayHawkFanToo Spot on. Nova went from a meat grinder to a cake-ish conference. If you put Bill in the ACC, BIG or old Big East, his record would be worse.

Five Big Questions • Jun 25, 2018 01:39 PM

@BeddieKU23 and others I think it depends on your definition of superstar. In the sense of KD or Michael Beasley at the college level? Doubtful. But superstar for a Self team entails something different, imo. Especially when Self has options. He's just not going to play 35 mpg and have an insane usage rate because of all the depth.

What about when Oklahoma in 2015-16 had 4 trey ballers over 40% and a big in Spangler at 37%? Self and KU still beat that team. Expanding brain stuff as usual. :thinking: :thinking: :thinking:
