@BeddieKU23 Arkansas has "resources"
I will say things are going to get interesting when teams dare Juan/KJ to shoot it. We were somehow getting into the paint against Duke late. I think ultimately we will need 1-2 of Juan/Bob/MJ to show they can at least hit wide open threes.

I don’t think Gonzaga is that good. They don’t have near the athletes or skill they’ve had in past years. They’re a bunch of stiffs for the most part. Tyrese Hunter though wow. Getting some FOMO
Should have sent Joe into the sunset and made it happen but c'est la vie.
@kuballin10 said in Other games:
@FarmerJayhawk we didn’t want him though we preferred big Dave and Mitch. Honestly wish we’d picked him up to backup Dave as Bishop knows and plays to his role
Worked out just fine though!
Bishop situation was more tied to Jalen. Bishop wanted to start and didn't want to play the 5.
@kuballin10 I forgot Calipari just can't freaking coach. UK has a lot of dudes and I like their roster.
@jayballer67 Gotta give him at least 3 years I think. If they are really bad again next year though...

Good Lord Louisville is a absolute mess
Trying to find a single win on their schedule is challenging.
@jayballer67 Yeah all in good fun. This team is intense. They will definitely lose some games when enough shots god down, but they are tough.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Dook Game Thread:
Coach Rob said he sat Gradey because he was tired. I don't think he was that tired, we can't have him sit that long. That'll change when Self is back or after next practice! Gotta push his go button. Wilson finally made some nice passes. We weren't making them work hard enough on D, and not getting a second shot.
He played 32 minutes, third most on the team.
We were never going to outrebound Duke. Our starting 5 man can't rebound and they are massive.
@kuballin10 said in Duke Kills Kansas... Kansas Wins Game!:
@BShark any word on it? Hope he’s okay. Maybe take Friday off let Gradey shoot more and mj play
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I noticed he was favoring it.
Dajuan should definitely get a light load against Southern Utah.
@BeddieKU23 said in Duke Kills Kansas... Kansas Wins Game!:
Very physical game. I was just happy nobody was serious injured but Kevin, Juan, Joe were all grimacing at one point or another. We matched their physicality though, this team is TOUGH, already, Bill Self has already molded this group and he's going to keep doing so as the season goes along.
The refs were out of hand in the 2nd half. We are lucky their impact didn't cost us the game.
Back issue plagued Kevin last year too. Great toughness from him and Dajuan last night.
@dylans said in Dook Game Thread:
@BShark That would be an upgrade!
Indeed.
Some more thoughts
I'm just not sure how Zach fits in at all. I have consistently liked what I've seen from Zuby he has great instincts just needs to learn the system and have the game slow down.
Our top 5 is very clear currently and this includes KJ. Right now he is absolutely the best big despite his rebounding issues. This does mean starting 2 guys that don't look to score at all but we made it work against a major opponent that was favored against us.
Jalen is a legitimate player of the year candidate currently. If he keeps up 20/10/5 he might just get it, will certainly be in contention and win conference poty.
Juan is fantastic and was playing on one leg. He orchestrated everything.
The defense has been suffocating though Duke did go after Gradey in a major way to start the 2nd half. Norm made a key adjustment by getting Bobby in there. Well done. McCullar and Dajuan obvs great on this end.
@benshawks08 Ideally MJ can take any minutes Joe might be getting.
Yeah this had to be done.
@kuballin10 said in Dook Game Thread:
@jayballer67 Zuby is a rebounding machine - did it in high school and circuit against legit bigs
Bill should be forcing minutes his way

Not looking good for Zach I'll say that.

Watched the game at midnight. Holy cow don't know where to start.
We have guys who really know the game and can flat out ball. McCullers was so valuable. KJ what can you say other than he is one tough ass playerand put the ball in the hole. Udeh and Zuby made their mark in a big way. We have depth!!
DuJuan was better than any Duke guard on both ends, great game!
Grady is a freak!! Highlight reel plays and Jay Bilas will realize that he is a terror on defense too.
This was J Will's best game I think. All American stuff. What can ya say?
The whole team was focused and poised. So Impressive.Duke played like punks and the refs made them pay. You could see the plan was to rough our guys up and beat us down with their length and depth. That last foul on J Will made my blood boil. But who was tougher? Yeah eff you Dook.
13 blocks against Duke I think we got more athletic. Really got after them on D despite being short handed I loved it.

I wish I could have a positive feel about tonight like some others. I'm just afraid with their length & Size they are going to make shots tough getting off , for sure no easy buckets inside. Roach is an experienced enough he gonna be a pest on the outside.
They have been starting like 6"10 - - -7 foot - -and 6'10 I think , just afraid we going to get in some serious foul trouble - -question is how we matching up on the defensive end ? - -Some real mis matches. - as far as our offensive end a lot different playing this size then our first two contests -- they gonna get multiple shots on the offensive end , and really if were not careful it could get kind of ugly in a hurry if our outside shots aren't falling.
Maybe our experience shows. - - Harris -- Wilson - - McCullars against their youth?- -we can only hope. -we already know our inside game is still very raw, defensively they can back off juan then it becomes 4-5- - -and if we get zero which is a possibility our inside just not proven raw - -then it becomes a 3-5 contest there is where ugly steps in. - -hope they prove me wrong, time to see what we are made of. - - with the people we short on top of everything else ? ? ? ?

Lotta teams losing buy games and such (idk if this was one or not but it's Colgate), just brutal.
Wake Forest beat Utah Valley by 3 last night.
@kuballin10 I should be, I'm too old for this! Darn double OT
None of the 4 teams here have really shot the three well.

Honestly not as bad as I would have thought. We knew this would be a problem given KJ.

This is where Bill would slow the game down and get his best guys set looks
We were definitely missing Bill tonight, would have manufactured some looks for Gradey I bet.
Going on a scoreless drought for 5 minutes is less than ideal.
Playing braindead for a fair bit here @kuballin10 I think this team can get great but not there yet.
We tried.

The D just doesn’t have the horses to play with another P5 offense that is built to play up tempo. Our D-Line and LBs aren’t good enough.
I expect us to add to this defense in the off-season in big ways though.
100% correct. We looked slow and small out there.
Gonna be a wild one it appears. Glad to see Lance go for it on 4th down.
Bob and Udeh will be the new Dotson and Udoka. Give it a year.
@kuballin10 said in Taking on DOOK:
@Jethro Duke to me is no doubt a top 5 team in the country. They’d smoke UK and the Zags right now.
Great test early on can our speed negate their size?
Can our defense travel and we turn over guys more athletic than us?We have to shoot it well because we will not get many easy baskets at the rim.
I think you are really underrating full strength UK. Not sure when we will see that to be fair though.
@kuballin10 said in Way Too Early Line-up and Player Thoughts:
@jayballer67 Bill wasn’t lying about mj like he was with Juan shouldering the scoring loan
Can't change a player's hoop dna we all knew that was bs lol. Don't know if everyone caught it but they talked to Dajuan after the last game and he was like "Coach has been getting on me to score more but..." :face_with_tears_of_joy:
@jayhawks2010 said in Way Too Early Line-up and Player Thoughts:
I think yesfu is still potentially a big bench piece. We are offensively limited in some ways and he has some much explosiveness and ability to score that others don’t have. Bobby and jaun are defensive pass first guys and poor shooters. in certain matchups we need yesfu!
Udeh definitely should be the starting center as we move forward. Love kj as an energy guy and defensive bench guy but not the starter yet…He really needs to grow offensively to play more.
Joe's biggest issue wrt this roster/team is he needs the ball in his hands to be at his best but we aren't playing him at PG because we have two guys ahead of him there.

@kuballin10 It's just so funny because all of last year was about how difficult it was for the new transfer to fit in, and he only finally got it and healthy at the very end of the year (thank god!) but kevin has just slid into the starting lineup as if he's in his 3rd or fourth season in a KU Uniform. Looks good on him in my opinion.
Fit and coachability is important. Remy was allowed to do w/e he wanted for 4 years and clashed with Self.
@rockchalkjayhawk said in Way Too Early Line-up and Player Thoughts:
Yup, Sharkie, that rotation sounds right to me.
Before the season I thought Zuby would be a key the guy in the middle. But after seeing his slightly smaller size, he’s got some things to perfect before he sees a ton of time on the floor.
Although Jalen has helped soothe some concern about 3 pt shooting, I still think we need somebody else to make some shots from deep if Self wants to take more 3s this season.
I think Udeh and Zuby will both be really good eventually. Won't be this year for Zuby but he is a guy I think will surprise once it is his time to start. He is already an animal on the glass but he is still learning a lot of things. Udeh is learning on the job as well (basically just set a pick go to the rim) but his size and better defense will get him time this year.
Our first real test, NDSU was extremely unathletic. I'll be watching closely.
What I'd like to see by March...
Dajuan/Kevin/Gradey/JWill/Udeh
Bench: Bob/KJ/MJ
Three clear bench roles here. Bob for the 1-2, MJ can slot in 2-4 but I'd lean 3-4 and be careful about who he is in with. KJ the bench big and can play the 4 in a pinch but I'd avoid that.
Need to make sure Bob is playing 25 a night, he's amazing. Absolutely a Bill Self PG. If not for Juan being well... Bill's lost son I think Bob would be starting by now. To me he has been better so far, but both are very good which is a nice problem to have.
KJ is frustrating in some ways but has clear value. He is a menace defensively but goodness he needs to at least keep his head up on offense.
Some people (as @FarmerJayhawk noted the clowns at RCB included) are down on Kevin but he is a floor raising player. He's never going to be bad, even when he isn't scoring is the thing. He was a big part of why NDSU was in hell offensively the first half. When this team is engaged on D are are nasty.
Udeh is more along than I would have guessed. I heard conflicting reports about this before the season but clearly he is a guy that is already contributing. He already has great synergy with Bobby.
MJ is insanely talented but you can also see why he frustrates Bill. Hopefully this goes in the right direction after being in the dog house because him being the bench wing does help this team a lot.
Gradey will be up and down especially on D (he does try and is long these things help) but clearly a key cog for us.
Jalen has had the 4th year under Bill "it's my team" ascension that we have seen in the past with Frank, Graham, Och etc
Joe is right on the fringe of the rotation I feel. He is not playing as a guard for us which does help him because he'd be buried behind Juan/Joe. He is playing at the wing in our current system. Obviously we get a lot smaller with him in the game but there will be times when his offense helps us.
@BeddieKU23 said in Ernest Udeh:
It's 2 games and they have done a good job telling Udeh to set screens and roll within the belly of the offensive sets & its working. He's barely scratching the surface to a full man's game but wow what he does well already is almost jaw dropping. He could be the best athlete on this team bar none among a bunch of really good ones
Baylor won their title with their 2 bigs doing this. Neither was a threat to post up at all.
Of course, I'm sure Self would love for him to develop some post moves. Big thing will be figuring out post pinning/sealing.

Its 2 games and we've played no one so this is an early overreaction take but this dude, the flashes he's showing are impossible to ignore.
He's got some Embiid/Doke vibes to him. The ability to run the floor like he did last night for multiple dunks is very impressive. He has some quick twitch jumping ability at his size which we haven't had in the frontcourt in a while. He's not afraid to switch onto a guard on the perimeter defensively already which is rare to see from a freshman. He changes the offense with his lob ability, not just that he's good at it, he's elite there, his wingspan and athleticism allow you to throw it up at a height or angle that only he can reach. Again, extremely impressive.
Self found his next big thing
I was at the UK game last season and Tshiebwe ran the floor harder than any big I’ve ever seen.
Udeh is close, and he’s only a freshman! I’m thoroughly impressed by the effort in combination with the physical attributes he has. This might be his only season in Crimson and Blue…
Too our benefit, players like Udeh aren't exactly in demand by the NBA. I don't think he's that good.
Idk man. The being able to switch onto guards makes him a lot more intriguing prospect than Doke was. The dude is super quick for his size. Tuesday will be a better eye test for that though.
Yeah something to monitor but we've only played Summit League guards so far lol.
