Someone has to carry on the proud tradition brought to you by former Jayhawk greats such as Kirk "Heinrich", Ben "Macklemore", Wayne "Seldon" and many others!

Kevin McCullar. I am seeing A LOT of "McCullers" and some "McCullars" as well. The first one I am thinking must be a phone auto-correct thing because it is so frequent.

Yeah sorry for this thread, I'm bored and waiting for more news lol.

@rockchalkjayhawk Jalen isn't looking to great, don't count on him being a better shooter. He needs to put in time. CB kinda shaky in scrimmage too. Anybody else watch?

Jalen has looked much worse against better competition.

McCullar*

Bill wouldn't have him announce without a promise to play here. See: Malik Newman and Remy Martin. I would be very shocked if he doesn't end up in Lawrence for a year.

Reasons to believe in next year’s team • May 20, 2022 02:29 PM

@Kcmatt7 There is a bit of frustration with two of his best offensive teams (18 and 22) that were simply okay on defense overperforming in the tournament while Bill can be perceived to still not value offense enough...

Next year will be very interesting for sure. The depth but no true stand outs (Jalen aside) will lead to RABID message board and twitter banter...

@Kcmatt7 I feel like Bill would have worked the portal hard if we had more spots.

Decent player, was buried on the roster at Duke. Starter level guy at a midmajor or perhaps lesser P5 program.

McCullar in the wings... I know many challenge him being good for us... but I'm totally on board with him coming here because by himself, and with Self coaching this team we will be an elite defending team next year. Now if we improve in post defense... wow!

It would be hard to be worse in post defense. Last year was Self's 2nd or 3rd worst team in that regard. But more importantly...his best trey ball defending team.

I understand why Bill wanted a wing capable of defending. McCullar is a home run, glad we didn't settle on lesser options. Dexter Dennis ended up at Texas A&M. These transfer rankings are not an exact science but...

McCullar #3, Mosley #15, Council #148, Dennis #191. I think those are all the wings that reached out to us or we reached out to. I have some great extra stuff about McCullar, waiting for the secret board @approxinfinity

2022 Transfer Portal Thread • May 20, 2022 12:08 AM

@FarmerJayhawk we certainly would. I think he is headed to Texas. Lots of guys are about to become available when they retract from the draft. Courtney Ramey is one to monitor if we miss on Hunter. One of our small guards I feel it is better for both sides to leave and I think he would if we bring in a starter caliber player for the 2g spot. I think it boils down to if the staff feels confident starting Bobby or one of the FR at that spot.

@justanotherfan McCullar wasn't invited to the next combine fwiw. Jalen was.

ETA: Also, we canceled Mosley's visit which would have been yesterday. Now, if Jalen leaves along with CB that could change the calculus to where we could take McCullar and Mosley (if we miss on Hunter).

PPPS: We told Mosley we are "moving in another direction" so Self knows something we don't!

If we get those 2, our defense will be suffocating. I wasn't excited about McCullar, but I think Bill could utilize him better than Tech did. I read he hit 42% from spot up 3s last year, so he could be quite a weapon if utilized properly.

Did you watch the cutting video I posted? Bill has a lot to work with here.

Disagree a lot. I think we are in deep trouble if that happens for reasons I outlined earlier. I think we add a couple guys that are in their 4th or 5th year of college ball though. "Get old, stay old".

Zach will be our best center next year.

I think we are in trouble if one of our 5-star wings isn't getting 20+ mpg and making a case to move into the starting lineup.

But one of the reasons KU was so good this last season was depth. Weathered injuries from Bobby and Remy. JCL was hurt a bit. Och missed a game. Jalen missed games early.

We need the bench pieces to be even better this year, especially if we are losing two 1st round picks the way we are. We may need to ride the hot hand a little more than we did last season.

I think one of the wings can get in that range sure.

@BShark thanks for the breakdown.

Based on your two recent posts above that sounds like the worst outcome imaginable.

Hunter and Carr together at Texas to go up against Juan and Bobby........

McCullar to keep Dick or Rice on the bench more isn’t ideal.

The craziest thing is that Bill seemingly prefers McCullar to Mosley. He sees things differently that's for sure.

I am high on Bobby though. He will do exactly what the staff asks and I think he will be fine off the ball. He isn't a terrible shooter by any means.

@BShark you hinting at something here?

Dream is getting JW (seems most likely) and CB (not real likely) plus Hunter to start and boot somebody who has no chance of playing real minutes this year

McCullar looks okay but he’s not some great athlete or anything. What’s the draw? I haven’t looked him up much.

I think he's a better fit for Bill than Mosley but in a vacuum and for our needs next year I prefer Mosley. Smart, versatile player. Played a bit out of position for Tech last year at times and was also playing hurt: https://www.lubbockonline.com/videos/sports/college/red-raiders/2022/02/15/texas-tech-coach-mark-adams-provides-injury-update-kevin-mccullar/6803103001/ ↗

As a wing for us I think he would be decent. But I only want him if CB leaves (likely, as you said).

I still expect Jalen back.

Complete gut feeling but I think if we land Hunter, we see one of our guards transfer because Hunter is a guy that will play big minutes.

Fo sho. I really think they’d take his commitment if he’d hold off a bit after visiting. Have to see CB through the process

I think if we did take him, someone would strongly consider leaving. Idk who it would be but Hunter is a guy that would eat minutes at the 2 and likely be the back-up 1 as well.

I'm not worried in the least about next year. No matter who is on the roster, I know I'm going to watch a premium product. We've got more talent coming in than we've had in a long time. Yes, it would be great if CB and JW return, but we'll still be good if they don't. We have a 5 -10 point coaching advantage every game, so that helps.

If CB and JWill didn't return and we didn't add anyone, I'd be VERY worried. I think that scenario is basically impossible though.

Not a Freshman, that's for sure.

We'd get a guy from the portal if CB goes, so a lot would depend on that so I will reserve judgment. Jalen would be a huge factor though.

I see Cb leaving and Mosley coming in but still having to fight for that starting 2 guard spot with Mj. Coach already know Gradey is starting at the 3 We got 3 McDonald All Americans coming in.2 are guards I fully expect that want to be One and Done this is the time Coach can change the narrative that he can produce em. Kids don't care about winning much they care about Money and being One and Done. I expect Coach to unleash em so he can show future recruits he let them One and Dones run free. It's been forever since we put Stars ina league Embiid and Wiggins 2014 so long ago for a BLUE BLOOD You know Coach think about that just like he thought about Winning Chips then did it again. I think we'll start getting high level recruits again this just gotta be step one to show other recruits He let the Freshman go.

I think portions of the fanbase are hyping Gradey up way too much. I'd be happy with 6-7 points a game from him. I think there will be a big adjustment period. Especially being able to defend at the level Self demands. Josh or Wiggs he is not. I think he is an NBA guy eventually, moreso than MJ.

How many great frosh were there last year? All the best players in the 22 class either reclassified or went pro. This removes them from the rankings an inflates the remaining players. Then you consider that we still have 5/6th year college players running around as well. I'm hoping we can ease our Freshmen in instead of throwing them into the fire.
