End game failure... β€’ Feb 24, 2020 07:11 PM

@drgnslayr

I will add after watching the replay Dotson and Garrett did a very poor job trying to get open on the pass Ochai made. Poor execution all around. We made it extremely easy to guard and for a play like that to happen. If Self doesn't use Ochai as the in-bounder who's left? Moss is too valuable as a FT shooter. Devon & Marcus are the ball handlers.

The jump ball was a foul but the rule book in Waco was special all game. There could be a video montage of questionable bad calls from that game and I'm not sure which would standout above them all.

I do think end of game situations has been a sticky situation for years. How do you replicate the type of pressure and intensity in practice for those moments?

Doke Dunk Watch.

Tied with Obi Toppin for most dunks with 89

He is 33 dunks away from his own record for a season

He is 13 dunks away from breaking the NCAA record held by Tacko Fall.

Dave is pretty consistent in his minutes. Gives effort, looks to shoot with any inch of freedom when receiving the ball in high post, 12 foot corner etc.

There's a clear drop off from Doke to him but he certainly finds ways to make the most of his minutes since becoming the backup.

Dave will progress. I look back and still remember again when asked Coach was ask who had improved the most during the off season. - -Coach didn't hesitate a second didn't bat an eye. - - He said David McCormack hands down , not even close - - interesting. He has improved but not sure about the hands down. lol.

McCormack to me at times looks sped up, like in hyper drive. Love the kids energy and has played well at times, going to be a solid 4yearplayer. I think we all agree there will be a drop off though for sure at the 5 next season. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

It would be interesting to see Self revisit that comment. Could have been true at the time of the question. Dave has improved a lot since his freshman year no doubt. When comparing him to Sr Azubuike it becomes clear how far away he still is from being that kind of dominate force for KU. Doke was half the player he was as a Soph. I don't know if we will see a big impact the game at the level Doke has been all season long. It's really remarkable to see what he's been able to do.

@mayjay

Not sure why SDS's numbers keep fluctuating .01 after games.

Dave only played what 4 minutes? Besides his foul rate (which I believe isn't accounted here) he scored a few buckets

The fix:

Don't let Agbaji inbound the ball. He also could have called timeout. Just a bad play

Thoughts on Oachi . What ya thinkin ? β€’ Feb 24, 2020 12:23 PM

@BeddieKU23 said in Thoughts on Oachi . What ya thinkin ?:

We've seen nearly 30 games this year. Ochai continues to play similar to how Wayne Selden did here years ago as a Soph. Ball-Handling, Passing & an Erratic jump shot are his major issues. I thought his defense Saturday was average for him but average for him is better then 75% of the NCAA at the wing position. He has to make open shots. You can definitely tell in big games he's in the learning phase of how to deal with things. The end of game against Baylor was atrocious. Self is ride or die with him though so I guess we just have to keep supporting and hope his good games come at the opportune moments

I think with the four of Doke, Dotson, Ochai and Garrett on the floor together we are just so hard to score against that you really can't take him out of the game. This defense literally has the best rating in the Kenpom era at the moment. Hard to think they do that without any one of those 4 guys.

I agree, his importance on defense gets overshadowed when he struggles to score. The emergence of Moss & Braun as scoring options on the perimeter has negated Ochai needing to be a consistent scoring option. We just beat the #1 team in the country and he had zero points. I think he's too valuable to sit even when he's struggling on offense and as we saw Saturday Self is going to continue to play him regardless.

Other Games β€’ Feb 24, 2020 12:17 PM

SDSU had a bad loss on Saturday night but ultimately it may benefit them if they fall to the 2 line in Gonzaga's region. Being sent East where Duke or Nova could be the #2 is bull crap anyway.

I watched SDSU and I didn't see #1 seed but I also think they played terrible on offense. I think I need to watch a few more of their games to see what their A game looks like. The problem outside the Top 4 teams from this weekend is that nobody deserves a #1 seed except maybe Dayton. It seems like they are doing all they can to keep Dayton from moving up in the polls. Maryland was on a big surge but just lost on the road to Ohio St. Duke has played nobody for most of the season. The gap from KU/Baylor/Zags/SDSU/Dayton I think is significant.

Dotson or Doke or both? β€’ Feb 24, 2020 12:03 PM

@kjayhawks

I think Dotson has more name recognition at this point which could be why he's getting more love. This is a wide open race since I don't think any of the top teams have a standout player in the media. No Zion to gush over. I think Doke helped himself tremendously on Saturday.

I think right now Obi Toppin & Luke Garza are probably the Top 2. They have both been outstanding.

What may be more criminal is the fact KU has two top players that could be First Team All-American and may only get 1 due to them being on the same team.. It's really rare the voters put two on the first team.

Dotson, Doke, Garza, Toppin, Marcus Howard, Malachi Flynn, Payton Pritchard and maybe a few others seem like the most likely candidates at this point.

F-bomb Roy.... β€’ Feb 24, 2020 11:14 AM

@drgnslayr said in F-bomb Roy....:

I get all the reasons why UNC isn't good. I just don't get it why they are this bad. It makes me wonder if Roy needs to hang it up.

I don't think he does with the recruiting class he has coming in. He signed 5 Top 50 kids. 4 of them made the All American Game.

The team he has just doesn't have it. His best player is meant for the NBA. Usually he has guys that are College Players and buy in.
