I watched the game D2 championship game yesterday between Northwest Missouri State and Point Loma. Congratulations to the Bearcats. But I thought one player--Daulton Hommes of Point Loma--was impressive. Would like to see him transfer to KU for his senior season.

He is on the NBA radar. Played with Gordon Hayward this summer. Good player

Seeing picks for Chris Harris Jr to Oklahoma St. Not sure why KU is not all over this kid. As good a shooter as you will find in the class and has a developed body already at 6'3. Best friends with Tyrese Maxey who is going to Kentucky and will be a OAD. Kid can play

Do you mean the team that lost to Maryland or Syracuse? I thought Maryland was the best team the majority of that season and earned that title. KU definitely gave away the 2003 game with their FT shooting that night.

I didn't watch a single game last night but I saw that Purdue and Texas Tech are in the EE. What kind of wacky world is this??!

Purdue super lucky. Were down 2 with 2 seconds left. Tenn fouled Carsen Edwards and he made FT's and sent it to OT.

Tech sent Michigan's offense back to the stone age. 16 points at half

Oh and the Virginia Oregon game was first to 50.

Gonzaga was the best team that played last night. They were hungry

Some of the bigger names yesterday on the move.

Jadon LeDee of Ohio St, 6'9. Ranked #103 in 2018 class. Didn't play much this year.

Huggy gets rid of another. Andrew Gordon. West Virginia down to 8 guys including recruits

Tim Delaney leaving Villanova. Didn't play much.

Not surprised on that one actually. I think addition by subtraction. West took a big step back this season. Huggy can run the 4 guard lineup with two big wings (Haley, Matthews) or go big with the Culver/Tshiebwe combo that is going to cause major problems in the Big-12 next season.

West was really just a 3 point shooter who took bad shots a good majority of the time. Charlie Moore of the Mountaineers

We could have used him this year. Instead we took Charlie Moore. Allen wanted to be a Hawk.

My first guess is he will stay Adidas. They made in-roads with him in HS which is why KU/Neb were some of his options. Will be interesting to see who he deals with. Gassnola was not allowed at Brewster

Here's something interesting about Lawson's chances of sticking in the NBA.

He ranks #8 in WARP, Wins above Replacement level at 1.9.

6 of the 7 above him will likely go in the lottery. One, (Haliburton of ISU) will likely return to College.

We know his limitations as an athlete but analytics say he'll do just fine in the NBA.

I watched a couple of Bama games this year. He stands out. I'm actually sort of shocked he wasn't on draft boards, but I think that's only because he's not eligible. Still 17 until next Saturday.

Same, saw some games and I was surprised how good he was. Beat out veterans, led the team in scoring. I know he was young but I didn't realize he was Svi young.

I have a feeling wherever he lands he'll appeal to be immediately eligible. I would if I were him after what has happened in College Football.

875 kids last yr FYI.

Kids have more leverage and choice now. Gone are the days Coaches and administrations can just say your not going anywhere, or we're going to restrict where you can go. It's bad PR to do it now.

The Grad Transfer angle has basically made it free agency. College Football is headed down a very steep dangerous path with eligibility appeals on some high profile kids (Justin Fields, Tate Martell). The transfer portal is another very recent tool given to kids looking to transfer as well. If kids don't like the situation they are in they feel empowered to change it. This is the times we live in now.

IDK about transfers. They had better be a target like Malik and not a desperation grab like Charlie.

It's hit of miss. But look at all the transfers left in the Sweet 16 that are making big impacts

Brandon Clarke started his career at San Jose St and is a Top 2 player at Gonzaga and will be drafted in the 1st round in June.

Texas Tech's 3-6 leading scorers are transfers

Michigan's 3rd leading scorer Charles Matthews transferred from Kentucky.

Braxton Key plays a role on Virginia's team.

Paul White has been an intergral part of Oregon's tournament success so far coming from Georgetown.

Bigby-Williams for LSU

Houston has 2 transfers in their rotation.

Reid Travis at Kentucky

Cameron Johnson of UNC is their leading scorer

This.

You have to be involved in the transfer market now. There is too much talent to ignore. People are scared of by Charlie, but they really shouldn't be. Two years in a row we have had a transfer be one of our better players. And we had a very positive experience with Black.

Every year there are quality guys, it is just picking and landing the right ones.

I don't think it helps the way we recruit though. We are always recruiting guys deep into April when all of this shakes out, so some transfers are scared to come here.

Cunliffe didn't work out too well either for recency.

Some success stories are Withey, Black, Lawson, Newman. Self has usually targeted transfers from Power 5 or bigger named schools.

I hope we take one grad transfer at least as well as a sit-out transfer. Not sure we'll convince enough HS talent to come here at this point with the current situations going on. There's a real chance only 5 Letterman return as it is. Best case reality type scenario seems to be around 8 + the two signee's. I seem to repeat this every year but Self should sign as many 2019/20 eligible players as he can find. After that get 1 sit-out with experience to mold. One year was enough of having a young team. Self needs to get old no matter how

New 2019 Recruiting • Mar 26, 2019 04:45 PM

Here's his comments on KU, the coaches and what role the staff has been selling him on. Self coached Matthew last summer with Team USA, the same team that had Quentin Grimes.

“I like their atmosphere". “I’m really close with their coaching staff, just what they do every day and their academics person is really close with the guys, even if they go to the NBA. So it’s more of a family there.”

To that end, Hurt told Eric Bossi, that the family environment at KU extends beyond the players and their bond together.

“Their coaching staff’s really close,” Hurt told Bossi, noting that KU assistant Jerrance Howard was the lead recruiter for his services. “Me and him are pretty close.”

As for how Self, Howard and the rest of the KU program were trying to pitch him on picking Kansas, Hurt said KU’s willingness to let him play on the perimeter, and play to his strengths, was something that stood out.

“A combination of like Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre, Josh Jackson, taller guys that can put the ball on the floor,” he said when asked how KU might use him. “That’s their message. They think they can train me to be a big guard and those are the three guys in the NBA that they want me to look at right now and how they did at Kansas.”

New 2019 Recruiting • Mar 26, 2019 04:42 PM

For those that don't know Matthew Hurt has set his announcement date for April 19th and is set to announce at a Ceremony at his High School.

Who knows if KU lands him but his decision easily has to be one of the most significant in the Self era considering all that KU has gone through this season and on the recruiting front.

He has officially visited KU, UK, UNC, Duke. All the heavy hitters.

K.J. ? Really ? Why would he leave a top program? ? Makes no sense at all to me... he will get playing time here. He got better over the year, and there are many many positives for sticking with a top program.

Grimes leaving would be a flat out joke. My god. For what? d-league money and anonymity...? He is nowhere NEAR pro level. Where is Newman now ? D-league right? Newman was better than Grimes.
If he leaves, then my advice to the coaching staff- avoid guys like him like the plague. Get guys who want to play for Kansas and to learn the game under self, not guys who think it’s an ok stop before they “ supposedly”go to the pros.

And why wouldn’t Doke want one more year under self, under the bright spotlight of a blue-blood college program.... overseas can wait one more year for a 20 year old.

The unfortunate reality is Kansas is just a hub for these guys professional careers. When you put so many guys into the NBA or into professional careers overseas, logic really doesn't apply when it comes to guys staying or leaving. There are more options becoming available every year and players have more leverage then they have ever had. 5 years ago most of these guys would likely have stayed and it wouldn't really be a question. Now every player down to the ball boy needs to be asked whether they are returning or not. For better or worse this is where we are now

Official Player Declarations Thread • Mar 26, 2019 11:21 AM

@Bosthawk

It would probably help if the staff made him a full time undersized 4 man. He's too slow to guard the perimeter. He can rebound and score inside and his outside shot was all sorts of inconsistent. Wouldn't be a bad back up to say Matthew Hurt..

The reason I think he looks elsewhere is simple most brothers that go to the same schools leave together. You see it everywhere across the nation.

Official Player Declarations Thread • Mar 26, 2019 11:18 AM

@Fightsongwriter

Grimes Freshman year almost mirrors Wayne Selden's to a T. Wayne was also a Top 15 recruit and stuck around 3 years.

I can understand your frustration towards Grimes. I can't say he's done anything "pre-madonna" though. You wouldn't want a 2nd year to see what the staff could do with him?

approxinfinity said:

I get why Bill assembled the roster he did, I think. I can see how the pieces fit. But when every year one piece or two we need doesn't develop or gets injured or ineligible isn't it a fair question why we have unique pieces and don't build redundancy into the system?

It is a fair question. Not much we can do at this point about the guys already in the system. The coaching staff has a ton of work to do this off-season in player and skill development.

approxinfinity said:

If we had all of those guys we still have a tragically flawed headcase as one of our two reliable 3 point threats in Vick, the other being Dotson. I'm sorry, but assuming we'd go undefeated is fan fiction.

Still thin at guard, with Agbaji a redshirt and Charlie a black hole of awful. Playing a high low with Mitch (I would hope but can't be certain of) as the 4th big? And we are somehow going to guard the perimeter better?

That's one way to look at it and I agree certain aspects of players were not going to change. Vick would have been the 3rd option though behind the post players. He seemed to implode right around the time all the pressure was on him to be the "guy" besides Lawson. Maybe he keeps it together just enough being that 3rd option. I don't know, we don't know all his issues. Vick was never an outspoken leader, he never thrived in that role. Doke was the leader of this team and his presence on the court changed a lot of things for KU. Without him that pressure went to Dedric who did an admiral job but we all saw how much he needed a robin to compliment him. Dotson stepped up big time in trying to pick up that role. I haven't been this impressed with a freshman since 2008.

I don't think we go undefeated either. Probably a 4 to 5 loss team though which is half of what we ended up with. That's #1 seed or a high #2 seed territory.

If De Sousa was available that would have changed a lot of roles. There would have been no drop off to going to him off the bench imo which wasn't the case going to Mitch and later David. The guard rotation was still a mess. Charlie and KJ even with the sit out year played like Freshman for almost the entire season. Garrett didn't improve his shot, Grimes couldn't piss in an ocean outside of a handful of games.

@jayballer73

Hurt didn't mention any visit to Memphis yesterday to the media. This was one of the first time's Matthew has actually spoken to the media this year and from what I read into his comments KU is still sitting in a good spot. The role he wants is here. Dedric just put up 20 and 10 in that role. You can run the 4 out with him as he'll put tremendous pressure on opposing teams to guard him. Not many teams are going to have that option. He has some limitations just like Dedric but he's a legitimate elite shooter, something this team desperately needs

@Texas-Hawk-10

Definitely chemistry lacked. It even lacked with the veterans early in the year. Having young guys in big roles made it difficult to have the season we hoped and had come to expect, take for granted. The hope is those young pups will develop the chemistry for next year and the following year after that. Not sure I'm that optimistic it will happen without seeing what the final roster looks like for next year. I think Self needs to find a few veterans on the transfer market to mesh with the younger guys

@approxinfinity

All good points. We are still talking about over 30 points missing from the lineup. A guy that despite some weaknesses made over 70% of his field goals and gave this team an above the rim presence every possession on offense as well as that big body and defensive presence. Vick was flirting with near 50% shooting from 3, a guy that could make tough guarded shots and was yet another athlete missing. Silvio, while raw was a rim running rebounding machine that had a real competitive streak to him. When your 5th, 6th, 7th 8th guys become part of your top 5 it's never going to end well.

I think it was clear early we probably were not a championship team. I did hope by end of season chemistry and roles worked themselves out but I doubt this is a 2nd round exit type team with those guys. We probably don't end with a 4 seed and we probably would have won #15. Of course none of that matters now.

@approxinfinity

Are we overthinking this years issues though? We finally had a team that bent and broke. We took for granted how many times self has glued together the sum of his parts to make a successful season. Finally enough upperclassmen were injured or no longer with the team that it left a huge leadership and experience void.

We undervalued just how much Self catered his entire offseason and approach to the season on having a healthy Doke. Early Season Vick was POY good, just like his Jr year started. This time he finally broke and ended up home without finishing his season here no senior night, no post season grind with his teammates. I dont know what coach survives two of his top 3 players not being able to play. In my opinion Silvio made 3 of his top 4. We still won 26 games. Pretty crazy. It was a disappointing season at different parts but I do think considering how much was missing from the roster it's amazing to think we could even win that many games.

I have been saying this for years, I would like just one season where KU starts and finishes with its entire roster. Something has to give, it's not coincidence anymore

Here's my thoughts on who goes, who stays.

Stays..

Starters:

Dotson

Agbaji

McCormack

Rotation:

Garrett

Lightfoot

Pending:

DeSousa

Gone:

Dedric- Dad was shopping for agents already. Go make some money overseas.

KJ- getting married in the summer. Likely can grad transfer if he has his academics in order. Finds a bigger role somewhere else, closer to home maybe.

Grimes- My suspicion that his family had made arrangement's for his pro career under the premise he was a Top 10 pick pre-season has only gotten stronger.
Does anyone really feel like Q plans to stick around? I just don't get the vibe with him. Wish I was wrong here. Wish I felt differently about what he may do. He's bombed his draft stock, his tape will look even worse. Will he get a combine invite on name and previous reputation? I can't imagine he'll test well compared to others. What position is he going to play. He didn't give scouts a good feel for what he could do. A million good reasons to return. But its his life. He'll do what he thinks is best

Doke- Coach all but said he didn't expect him back. This could be one that takes a while to sort our since he's still in the beginning of rehab and could stick around to field offers from abroad. I'd welcome him back if he did return. Hopefully he can get and stay healthy whatever he decides to do.

No Idea but don't come back:

Charlie Moore- What else can we say, he's not a Power 5 or Kansas caliber player. He seems like a good kid but I hope he finds a more appropriate level for his talents.

Defensively Self has work to do. A no-brainer really. How many guarded 3's did Auburn make on Saturday? I don't think there was one. That's a big problem. Villanova was the same issue. Texas Tech & Iowa St other examples from this year.

Offensively he just didn't have the personnel this year. He mentioned being concerned about shooting before the season even started. I guess we should have known then. Vick became an exceptional shooter, he easily was on target for 100 3's on the season and was the one piece of offensive Self couldn't replace after his absence.

The guys lacked confidence in taking shots. I watch other teams just let it fly. We didn't have guys with the green light like we were used to. Vick had it but it took him almost 4 years to get to that level. The offense was so robotic and stagnant and for good teams was easy to guard. We didn't put pressure on teams to guard us. Most guys only looked to score if they were open. This years team was completely different from the trio of Devonte, Svi & Malik. Grimes & Lawson were the only guys that would take contested shots all year long. The guys that come back have a ton of work to put in on the offensive side. Hopefully the two signed newcomers will improve the level of shot making and competitiveness among the veterans.

see this is where I felt really bad about Auburn and the way they spread - -I said we were in trouble , people disagreed. - -I saw this 3 pt defense all yr - -just sucked - WIDE OPEN 3's - time - -after time - -after time - -just like you mentioned with Saturdays game. - Hell you give shooters like Auburn have -they gonna kill you - -and they did. - -just got to get better

Not guarding Bryce Brown with a sense of urgency was literally stupid.

Kentucky made Fletcher MacGee useless on Saturday with how they guarded him.

FSU made Ja Morant's impact on the game non existent by making his teammates average.

Nobody guarded Brown, not one of his shots was contested. Good shooters will tee up all day with that kind of matador defense. At the end of the day the approach and execution was extremely poor. Once Auburn made shots early KU folded like a cheap suit. That's how you get down 26 points at half, being kicked in the teeth and not having the poise to reset and fight through it. We seem to catch everyone's perfect day in the tournament. Just as Nova and Oregon for recent examples
