Are we done recruiting? • Nov 17, 2017 06:58 PM

It's obvious Self is only interested in the big fish left. They will wait and see what happens. If they miss on both for some reason then you go after what becomes available in the spring from coaching changes etc.

Is the Jacobs brother a shooter?

Ah I think I missed that or just glazed over it. The Grimes thread was a blur. :joy:

It's all good its been a fun month on the recruiting side. Maybe the most satisfying result of any November period I can remember considering the path our recruiting was taking in the fall in previous years.

Marquette guy is a little salty about the parents, he never once mentioned where Q wanted to go. Constantly mentioning what the parents thought. I'm sure the parents liked Marquette's coaches etc they officially visited, all the way from freaking Texas. As I had thought for a long time, Q enjoyed the process of seeing other schools, coaches recruiting him but knew where he wanted to go for a while and in the end went where he was most comfortable. Nobody out-recruited Self this past year for Grimes & Dotson. He made both of those situations a reality because of the work he and his staff put in.

So, after the recruiting wait was over, now we go through a waiting period of anxiety over someone we previously waited for to become a Jayhawk. Seems like we are never settled!

That about sums it up.

BShark said:

@BeddieKU23 Did you see that donk Marquette fan on 247 that was absolutely dead sure that if we got Dotson we couldn't get Grimes? So much so that he wanted us to land Dotson. Marquette was offering him the keys to the program!

Yeah I saw it, I posted what he said post Grimes commitment to KU I believe yesterday

Q choose the school he was likely to pick for well over a year. I don't know why anyone would be surprised that it happened.

But other places sure have a way of getting delusional about the simplest things

Dotson and Grimes...

Remember when we were arguing this could happen in the summer with others!

Nice to see a kid coming in for an unofficial this early

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:48 PM

@BShark

I hope we feed Doke a ton inside. He has a huge advantage in this game if he stays out of foul trouble. This should also be a game that Vick is the leading scorer.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:33 PM

@BShark

To be fair the team they beat in their last wouldn't have beaten our exhibition foe's. Alabama St wouldn't score 30 against KU. South Dakota St isn't an athletic bunch, Daum is a big guy and he's not going to beat you off the dribble. We have no choice but to play Doke on someone and if its not Daum then I don't know who because their only other big guy only plays 15 minutes a game. But Doke can't sit in the lane like he did against Kentucky and that's going to be a problem. They will run screen actions to get him open outside. So I'm really interested in how Self scouted for this game without Preston who would be on paper the best option to cover him. Either you stick with Doke and let Daum get his and focus the rest on limiting Jenkins or you put someone quicker and smaller on him and Doke is forced to cover somebody else.

This matchup for South Dakota St only works if they make everything from 3 and KU misses shots like they did Tuesday.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:20 PM

@BShark

Yeah a lot of 6-5-6-7 types.

They share the ball well, 8 guys average 1 assist or more..

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:14 PM

I would trust Garrett on Daum. His length and smarts would at least make the shots difficult

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:14 PM

@BShark

About half his buckets from 3 so far.

The team has made 55% of their shots from 3 so far. Small sample size but we have to run them off the line

@BShark

Yeah we have to hope that all works out. How quickly can Silvio learn how to play under Self. Having a 3rd big is the difference in the season.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:07 PM

@BShark

Yeah tonight could be one of those games for him. Especially at home where its easier for him to find comfort. I hope for a positive contribution from him tonight. The biggest thing he could do is if he's guarding Daum, to make shots difficult and not foul. That would be a big win for him in my book

@BShark

Not having Whitman is definitely a bizarre thing right now. I mean seriously?

I just don't think we were ever a serious threat to land him. There was a moment in the spring where it looked promising. Just seemed like a longshot in the end

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 02:01 PM

@BShark

Yeah he's made some defensive contributions but he doesn't rebound with any aggression which is concerning given the type of player he is that wants to be a high energy type guy. The bar was already low in my opinion from an expectations point but right now he needs to step up and play well. No excuse

Was it ever confirmed he wasn't a take because of academics. I mean Missouri's coach skated the grey area of recruiting violations to land Tilmon. Hint hint show up at his school to visit his sister out of the blue..

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 01:56 PM

BShark said:

The good news is we can get away with playing Mitch more against a lot of the upcoming teams.

I would love to say something positive to that fact. Well I'll just say he can only improve if given more minutes? That's the best I can find

@BShark

maybe the standards at KU are a little higher then Missouri? Regardless we didn't think Preston had a great chance but Oak Hill Magic came through

@BShark

Saw that. wanted to say something but with the Preston situation Tilmon is looking like a saint. At least he gets to play

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 01:53 PM

@mayjay

I would say my confidence in that would be close to zero. He signed with KU with risks and well here we are. Its becoming a nauseating feeling

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 01:37 PM

@BShark

I agree, the bigger issue is whether we are preparing for games without him for "X" amount of games or the season. I think that's where its headed, Compliance has sent this to the NCAA for review

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 01:34 PM

@BShark

Didn't they say they were preparing without him. Even if its cleared up, the prep for the game has been done without him so he's essentially out of the game plan anyway.

This is the risk of Preston coming full circle. Thanks Deandre Ayton

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 01:28 PM

I don't buy that it takes 3 days to find out exactly what is happening in this situation.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 10:45 AM

wouldn't be a season without a big man messing it up

Coach Self said...We are going to prepare as if we are not going to have him and it would be a bonus if he is available...or words to that effect. Sounds to me like he is not too optimistic.
How stupid would it be to drive a flashy car not obtained on the up and up and think it will not attract attention? Aren’t these high prospects and their families instructed extensively on what not to do so the status is not jeopardized? SMH.

How stupid? very.

But this is Preston we are talking about. It was a miracle he was even eligible.

Crimsonorblue22 said:

@BeddieKU23 is that a positive?

I'd prefer he played but it doesn't sound like that is happening.

As far as who would guard him I would trust Marcus over anyone we got.

Billy isn't playing. So it's going to be a huge mismatch unless self decides to play Marcus on him

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 16, 2017 11:09 PM

No change in prestons status after over 2 days. Yeah this isn't good

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 16, 2017 07:43 PM

@BShark

How fitting would it be to see him sit the year.

Only problem with this much talent is someone is not going to be getting in reps! Someone will transfer? I know Lightfoot has said never BUT we have all heard that before.

I think most of us are hoping he takes a red-shirt. He needs it if he's going to become a regular part of the rotation in the future.

Champions Classic Thoughts • Nov 16, 2017 07:41 PM

I thought Bridges was too passive in the first half against Duke. You saw the urgency in the 2nd half but he was largely quiet in the first. Greyson Allen beating Michigan St reminded me of how Denzel Valentine beat KU a few years ago. They just couldn't overcome 1 player's game

Embiid and the Sixers • Nov 16, 2017 07:36 PM

They won the game didn't they?

Embiid and the Sixers • Nov 16, 2017 05:43 PM

wow. I mean how else can you describe that. Watched his highlights on Youtube I'll find them.

We really can't take credit for this man. He is light years a different player since joining the league

HawkChamp said:

@BeddieKU23 if we can't cover some guy from South Dakota State, then throw the possibility of a final four out the window. We'll be fine. I predict a good shooting game.

He's isn't just some guy from South Dakota St. He averaged 25 points a game last year.

He had 30 and 13 in their last game with Five 3's. For the season he's 47% FG, 47% from 3, 90% from the line. At 6'9 250 who's covering him away from the basket?

The team is shooting 44% from 3, 7 rotation guys have made at least 1 already.

They share the ball extremely well and rebound at a high level.

I didn't say we'd lose, I said its a trap game which it is. 3 days after a tough game in Chicago playing a team with one of the best College Basketball players in the country is recipe for a close game.

I expect the team to shoot better being at home. But with the Preston situation still hanging over us we have 7 guys who can play and not one that can cover an inside/out forward.

BShark said:

@justanotherfan @BeddieKU23 et al something to keep in mind is Doke plays a dying position. I think he needs to show more based on what I'm hearing/reading but we will see. Great thing is KU will be fine either way.

Good point. Absolutely agree. At this point in my opinion it would be a big mistake for him to leave. He's much improved but we know there's so much more he can learn and get better at before jumping. Age is never going to be a factor with this kid so unlike other players his best basketball should still be years down the road.

from marquette's mod.

"This was an interesting recruitment..

I think it came down to Kan and Texas....but at one time, MU led barely.

I thought MU had the opportunity for him to be showcased...and play the PG....

The family was key...I heard that mom really liked Wojo...but then she also attended Kansas.

I heard from Kansas people in Aug...that MU had a great shot because the dad really likes Wojo. That worried Kansas...

MU recruited Grimes hard...and gave it 100%....sending multiple coaches down to visit...which forced Self to do the same...

Then you hear that the father always wanted him to go to Kansas....who knows?"

What's missing? no where does it say what Quentin wanted. What school Quentin liked. Obviously if a kid is considering your school and officially visits he likes you in some way. Always interesting to see the parents comments to schools but in the end its the kids choice. Just ask Keldon Johnson's father.

Trap Game!

They made 17 3's in their last game. Mike Daum is someone we can't even cover. Hope the kids come prepared

What are we thinking the odds are that Dok comes back?

I think they are slim if I was looking at this from his point of view.

Self stressed that he wouldn't leave without a 1st round guarantee. Right now he's no where near the 2nd round on mocks so it would seem he would be back right?

An extra year would do wonders for him, He'd have another 30+ games under his belt, another year to work on footwork, post moves, FT shooting etc. He'd only be 19 going to the NBA after next season.

Slim that he comes back? The rest of the post doesn't seem to match up with that.

Yeah I don't think Doke is looking at this the way we are. Maybe I'm wrong but I do think he wants to go after the year. Whether his injury from last year or how the season plays out changes that is TBD. Hopefully by season's end we'll have a clearer picture of what the scouts think of him.

@BShark

That's big using a former player.. Smart move.

To be clear they can absolutely play on the floor together but in these scenarios imo Dedric will be playing center and KJ the 4.

We always seem to think guys can play a position up (Marcus and Perry at the three anyone?) but then it never happens in real, high leverage situations and rarely at all in general.

Bingo. I see KJ as a small ball 4, basically a better rebounding and offensive talent then Lightfoot. His chemistry with his brother could be important to put out on the floor with Dedric though. He's also known as being a good defender and passer (things we saw in Italy) for example.

I know months have passed and the excitment of our freshman are still on our minds but KJ can play and if he finds a consistent perimeter shot he's going to be a big part of the rotation

That's why Vick or Doke is important from a leadership standpoint next season. Maybe Vick more because he would be a senior and he'll have the ball in his hands a lot more then Doke does. Either one of them is really important. Otherwise we are looking at KU's version of a Duke/UK overhaul.

If Zion goes to Clemson its more about the role he gets to have and following the model that Fultz and Simmons have made going to non-elite schools for a year. You don't have to go to Kentucky, KU, or UNC to be considering a top draft pick anymore.

And then we should hear Kentucky fans saying we didn't want him anyway.

I'll take both of them coming back but that seems unlikely given that we signed 2 five star guards for next season. Someone(s) are movin on up'
