Preston hasn't even played in a real game and he's gone. While I agree, its just funny.

For anyone wondering, we paid Grimes according to UT fans. They didn't pay Bamba tho.

I hope it was a ton of money! Wow people are funny these days.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 16, 2017 02:05 PM

this could also be KU being extremely tight about anything right now because of the FBI.

Fwiw Billy's mom is fairly well off. Which I guess shouldn't really be a surprise given how he moved across the country to different high schools.

that's important to note in regards to the car. It just seems weird that this is holding him up

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 16, 2017 01:55 PM

Billy I'm sure wants to play. He wants to show up. Its now the University that is stepping in and questioning his status.

Why is he driving a newer model Dodge Charger? If it was simple I'm sure this would have been cleared up Tuesday. 2 days have passed, no resolution. There's obviously more to this for better or worse. Typical, typical, typical

Like clockwork, UK's 247 writer getting defensive over Grimes picking KU. Of course it was only because they landed KJ and Herro. It's not like Grimes cut them first. Nope. Definitely not that.

ingrained in their delusional world

@cragarhawk

As far as system fit they all have a role here. Preston if he can get back on track would give Self the other big he needs.

Sam is very athletic and can make the 3 although probably more volume then knock down shooter. He's definitely a wing.

De Sousa has the toughest road if he joins early. He's a big body who can rebound and hopefully fit in. I think having him as a potential 4th big is huge. He once was a top 5 prospect in his class.

Expectations? High or low right now • Nov 16, 2017 01:06 AM

@cragarhawk

Preston is really an offensive talent. At his size he is the modern day 4 in the NBA. He has weaknesses, effort, maturity being among the most prominent but he's really important to this team.

Cunliffe is an athlete that can shoot some and defend. Came to KU needing to mature and generally work on becoming a complete basketball player.

De Sousa is another typical NBA 4 man that is physically ready to play now. He will have a tough time adjusting if he comes mid semester but can play inside and make jumpers. Exciting prospect.

Sounds like he really has a good head on his shoulders

Good points. Just seems real odd. Good luck to the kid making his own path at a smaller school.

So if we have Grimes, then we need to get Langford..."Romeo, Romeo, what art thou, Romeo?"

Seems like the plan if we have some guards leave early

Perception on Devonte • Nov 15, 2017 07:26 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

Missed shots can also be a product of being tired. This early in the year with zero depth to depend on. All 5 starters played over 32 minutes. Graham & Vick played the most minutes (all but 4) combined and made 7 of 28 field goals.

We need another big to take pressure off the guard rotation.

Grimes will push KU to the #1 recruiting class in the nation ahead of Duke, UK & North Carolina.

@drgnslayr

Next yr its rumored to be the opening games of the year. Going in reverse I guess..

Your boy Doke looks so much smoother out there. If only he could make a FT

Perception on Devonte • Nov 15, 2017 05:27 PM

He definitely tried to make plays but he pressed hard and he was clearly tired in the 2nd half.

Some inexplicable misses like an open 12 footer or the FT towards the end of the game. Most of his shots were pretty much the norm for him except he didn't make them anywhere close to his average.

This should be a great learning experience for him as he learns how to balance scoring and leading against quality competition. The turnovers were more concerning to me then anything. Some really boneheaded passes that led to easy baskets for UK. It certainly seemed like the guards were trying to showcase themselves on the big stage and we saw a ton of selfish plays that really didn't benefit anyone.

Expectations? High or low right now • Nov 15, 2017 04:57 PM

Well at least you have no where to go but up from here.

I say give it time. We are missing pieces that can help.

Do you think we miss 42 shots in another game this year?

Tim Finke (not KU related) • Nov 15, 2017 04:50 PM

Isn't Finke a Top 100 kid? This is just strange even for going a different out of the box route.

Vick and Doke back changes next years outlook dramatically with what we have coming in. Without your looking at a complete overhaul. Would be nice to see at least 1/2 return. A 3rd year from Doke would be essentially year 2 for him. Excited at his progression already

I certainly understand why we would get nervous, we've certainly been down the rabbit hole a few times with recruits we thought were shoe-ins.

Surprisingly I have been very confident with Q for a while. The staffs lack of movement on other recruits tells a big picture here. If that ends up being a key indicator with this one its always something to consider in future recruitment's.

Everybody good now? There was some panic creeping in..

@jayballer54

It's too little too late already in my opinion with Billy. I know that sounds a little early to be jumping ship but what's the point in hoping for anything to change. Marcus doesn't have a problem off-the-court, he gets it.

You get suspended for one game, that should be all the teaching you have to do. You get suspended again for a different incident well now its a problem that has no easy fix. While this last incident isn't officially a suspension, his actions have cost him the ability to play so there really isn't a difference. Especially after last year there really shouldn't be much tolerance for anything.

Cut em loose, let him get his education for the year and he can decide what's best for him after

Perspective • Nov 15, 2017 02:44 PM

I certainly got the feeling that guys were more worried about the people watching them play and impressing then taking full advantage of how to win as a team. We saw too many countless instances of careless shots, passes, turnovers. But as our offensive identity has evolved Self has given guys lots of green lights. I can't imagine he thought they would shoot that poorly and still win.

Lol. What a twat. KU was playing with likely 3 less players than they will have in March.

Doesn't matter, says we are the Atlanta Braves of CBB.

Maybe he can see what we can't. Hard to imagine so minus 3 players and a historically bad shooting night

loving the activity on the board. At least we know its Basketball season. Ugly W's are better ugly L's especially against Kentucky.

@BeddieKU probably haven't or not very much. - But that wouldn't be what that meant at all. - when you have only 7 players and you need to protect an already thin front line - -means your trying to protect a very important piece of that seven - -not that you stink, it would of been a very logical decision, not a knock against the defense - you improvise - -like they say adapt and overcome. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yeah I get your point. With 7 guys it would make sense to have a defensive wrinkle.

They just had no time to plan for Preston being a repeat idiot. They found out last minute which didn't give them any time to adapt what they already scouted and game planned.

Self knew the stakes coming in, 8 kids til December. I'm sure he didn't plan on playing in November with 7 so I'm sure zone defense was not apart of the plans when we were practicing in pre-season.

My point was that I would take us playing zone this early as a sign that he didn't think highly of his kids to defend the way he wants. If we are going forward with 7 for a while then I agree he should definitely be looking at practicing it because he's foul trouble away from playing walk ons. There's a give and take with zone's especially if you don't practice it. You can get lucky using it as Self has done over the years.

Perspective • Nov 15, 2017 02:03 PM

@jayballer54

I bet you they haven't practiced it.

That would be a very telling truth about where he thought his team was defensively if they were going to zone. He wants his kids to defend M2M. Conceding to a zone would all but tell you he thinks they stink

Perspective • Nov 15, 2017 02:00 PM

If Mitch had made that layup/dunk attempt he fumbled that would have been a nice play for him. He did have some active moments defensively I thought and we didn't lose anything with him on the court. It's not like we threw it in the post regularly anyway. Kid needs minutes just as much as anyone if he's going to be expected to get rotation minutes when needed

Man, that was FUGLY • Nov 15, 2017 01:54 PM

On such a big stage, one I'm certain Marcus has never experienced before he certainly seemed to have those jitters early. Once the game settled I thought he was really active. It seemed he wasn't trying to force the issue and make mistakes.

I am unhappy people are dissing Mitch so much. He was there, he played, he got blasted around, he was horribly outsized and overmatched, but he did make 2 nice plays that prevented easy inside UK baskets.

Plesse stop saying only 6 players. Or just give up the "team" concept entirely if you are so dismissive.

He's more apart of the team right now then our bench warmer wearing glasses

Man, that was FUGLY • Nov 15, 2017 01:46 PM

@RockkChalkk

Yeah Garrett wasn't great offensively. Had a big 3 though. The steal and turnover was poor because that was a momentum play missed.

Defensively though he was awesome and its not a stretch to say he's our best defender already

I'm alarmed that this version of KU is what we see in March. But if Preston does play at some point, De Sousa joins & Sam Cunliffe is at least serviceable I expect this team to improve as much as any team in America over the season

3 more players will help a lot. Insane to beat UK's top athletes with 6 guys. Says a lot about UK I feel...

UK is terrible. But they were terrible in the first two games as well so we got exactly what was expected. We did everything but hand them the win.

Imagine if Knox didn't show up for them last night. They wouldn't have broke 50.

Is it coaching? • Nov 15, 2017 01:19 PM

@BShark

Absolutely he's not a guy you can give the ball with too much to do. But we did about as poor of a job making opportunities for him as you can.

Our guards have a lot to prove. That was about as poor as a collection of players can play and still win.

Perspective • Nov 15, 2017 01:15 PM

If we met in March we'd beat them by more. This Kentucky is not good team and unless Vanderbilt is their savior they are just an inexperienced version right now of what they'll be months later. It's a bunch of athletes that don't know what they are doing. Good luck Calipari.

We were short 1 idiot freshman.

We shot historically terrible numbers and won.

We have 7 guys and walk ons.

Our Senior leader has a lot to learn. Svi and Malik bailed him out.

Get Doke the ball. I mean apparently its rocket science

I'll take a sloppy win early because at least its great teaching/coaching moments for the staff.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 15, 2017 11:02 AM

we really shouldn't be surprised about Preston. He came in with issues and he still has them.

Another season, another big man issue

Is it coaching? • Nov 15, 2017 10:46 AM

Well I don't know why we decide to even have Doke out there if we are not going to use him. 34 minutes, 3 fouls, 5 shots! Good thing there will be plenty of tape for Self to yell at them for neglecting him.

It sure looked like our 4 main guards were all in it for themselves to prove to the scouts. In the end we did enough but the shooting needs to improve tremendously going forward

Big men do cry • Nov 14, 2017 07:06 PM

@DoubleDD

Sure Kentucky has talent, eight 5 star talents but as a team they are not a reflection of those stars.

I just don't see much changing from their game Sunday other then I'm sure they will be pumped to be playing in this setting. Maybe that raises the level of their play knowing a bazillion scouts will be there watching. Once that wears off and the game settles down I expect us to find ways to win this game. Could be close, could be a comfortable win in the 2nd half.

Tonight is a great opportunity to see who's ready when the lights shine bright. I hope our guys are ready for that test
