Big men do cry • Nov 14, 2017 05:36 PM

I expect to win and I'm predicting we win. It will be very disappointing if we lose based on how we played in Game 1 and how Kentucky has looked in its two games.

If we lose I'm sure it will be how we generally lose any game. Bad shooting, turnovers, defense, rebounding. We'll beat ourselves, we always do. I don't expect all those stars to align.

Graham, Vick, Svi, Newman keep the bunch poised and locked in and we take advantage of a Kentucky defense that isn't very good right now.

Agreed I lost a few brain cells after that one. Considering the source it made sense

4 OUT Small Ball • Nov 14, 2017 05:29 PM

@BShark

We'll get more out of Newman, I wouldn't be surprised to see him lead the team in scoring tonight for example. I'm really interested to see where he's at after about 8-10 games because I think that's when we will start seeing him assert himself more (if he hasn't already by that point).

Vick looked real good in game 1 taking on more volume. If that outside shot blends in as well as his drives to the hoop he's probably the best go-to option we have. Between Graham, Newman & Vick I see great potential going forward

Leave it to Medcalf to be braindead

Big men do cry • Nov 14, 2017 05:01 PM

I agree I expect to win.

It's a neutral court so anything can happen. I expect Self to out-coach Calipari and our players to out-play his freshman

4 OUT Small Ball • Nov 14, 2017 04:43 PM

@StLJhawk

Nice post. We are certainly spoiled.

It will be interesting to see how we get offense when things break down. Mason was great at creating offense in those situations as you said.

Graham however might be exactly what this team needs as a more natural pg option. 12 assists in the opener. He's a gifted passer. His vision might open opportunities for easier baskets when a play breaks down instead of relying on the many heroics that Mason gave us last season.

I wonder if there was a chart of Mason ISO's and how often he either scored or got to the FT line when this team needed buckets. Graham might be just as effective as a better passer with the ability to get into the lane and dump it off to Doke? or an open shooter for a 3 pointer. We'll see how this evolves but Game 1 we certainly saw Devonte controlling the game without being a major option on offense. That's maybe the big upside to having Devonte over Frank this season. We'll see.

@BShark

I did see his post. Some interesting comments.

I'm high on Moore in year 4 and 5. Next year is perfect to have a better option with Dotson. Maybe you get a player like Nic Moore (small in stature, scorer, leader) etc down the road. That's what I'm hoping for because physically he's always going to be limited. Jeff Goodman referred to him as a High School freshman in stature at a recent practice. I think the sit-out year and rotation role next season is exactly what we need from him in the immediate future

It will be interesting to see what we get out of Sam. Initially I wasn't happy at his exit from ASU (and if you take the fans and his coach for their word) they were happy to trade him to KU. Maturity was the biggest concern I had for him coming to the program. Has he matured in his time off? We'll find out quick because he joins the team as the 9th option on the team. So he's going to have to battle just to see the court other then mop up time or injury/foul trouble.

I hope we get to see his perimeter shot and see him blending in with the team. Going to keep an open mind in regards to him until we see what he can do. If he can defend and make a few perimeter shots I hope he sticks around and continues to work on his game. Seems like he could be easily forgotten if he doesn't get on the court a ton this season

SILVIO DESOUSA • Nov 14, 2017 03:21 PM

Good stuff. Glad to have him and if he can join early an early bonus for the team and himself

Yeah Brase is hurt and Lard is in the toughening box.

Didn't Brase miss a few years of basketball being hurt? Now he's hurt again.

Time to cut ship on Lard, this is what year 3 in the program for him without playing (at least to date)..

Was looking to see if anyone posted about this. What a disaster already.

I think Prohm might have fooled me with Fred's players.

Certainly he had a lot of experienced players when he got the gig. He might have in fact overachieved with those guys.

He missed the ball in the last recruiting class and just filled it with anyone he could get basically. Beverly & Talley are not the typical transfers they get that are instant impact types. They should have gotten more talent around Wigginton & Lewis then they got for the amount of players that graduated.

The class he has for next year is looking really good. 6 man class right now and its a big talent upgrade.

Just looking at the box score it looks like Lard & brase didn't play and I was under the impression both of those guys were going to play big minutes this year. Hurts them in the front court

Was looking to see if anyone posted about this. What a disaster already.

@BeddieKU23 So exactly where are you positioning Grimes at anyways? - -a Wing - -Langford can and probably will play wing especially if he comes here. - -you playing Grimes at PG - - umm already have Dotson recruited and signed there. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

The "2" guard position or whatever you call it today. We know he can play point if needed but that's not his primary position or his primary need in KU's lineup. It's his ability to score, his vision and his defensive capabilities that we want. If we go to 4 guards which has become our new reality then I'm failing to see where he doesn't start and get everything he wants. Self can trot out Dotson, Grimes Garrett at minimum and have 3 very capable ball handlers, play-makers, and continue with this offensive scheme that gives opposing teams nightmares trying to guard.

Really? - -dam thanks for that tidbit had no idea. - -So because he is announcing tomorrow then that means he is committing to KU right? - -gotcha thanks - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Well yes you answered your own questions.

Vick had 23 points in the 1st game. If he has a similar game tonight in front of a million scouts and eyes he's going to start getting a ton of looks.

Obviously coming back as a senior could have its benefits. Seen Frank do it, seen Devonte do it. That could be important to him seeing the path that others have made coming back. Vick has what the NBA wants though which is different then Frank & Devonte's position to stay. I think that is a significant factor that Vick is viewed as a NBA player. We have to factor in that all his boys that he came in with could be gone as well. As many as 7 new faces next year.

Who else is KU recruiting at Grimes position? Nobody that's the answer.

Langford is a wing and we are recruiting him as such.

A month ago we were worried about Dotson going to Maryland. They "closed the gap", gave him "something to think about". Heck Maryland even had his best friend doing everything they could.

2-3 weeks ago Marquette and Kentucky had really closed the gap. Once they moved on now its Texas has closed the gap.

This is funny

I think at this point it would be a mistake to not give Marcus his due after this season. HS rankings aside Garrett has come more prepared then 95% of freshman Self has gotten in his time. Of course I'm basing this on what we've seen to date. Imagine how much better he'll get in an off-season as well

Oh no doubt. I've been on the Garrett hype train for a long time. https://throughthephog.com/2016/08/02/pg-marcus-garrett-commits-kansas/ ↗

From what I've seen of Romeo, he's the most gifted scorer in the class. Fits perfectly next to Dotson and Grimes. Garrett will be a glue guy/stopper.

No questioning Romeo's skills. He's got game.

Starting 3 freshman in the back-court. We know Self better then that. Fun problem to have though if he has that type of talent putting on a KU jersey

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:35 PM

BShark said:

Yeah, you give Romeo the starting spot because Garrett seems like the kid that just dgaf and will eat up minutes off the bench. Dotson, Grimes and Romeo start, but Garrett and Moore both get respectable minutes.

Good point about the type of character Marcus has. Still I'm sure being the kid he is he's going to make it very difficult for Self to play someone over him.

good! time for celebration this week

Nope. He's going to be a great player, but no way he starts over Langford. He can provide terrific depth 1-3 though.

That's awful high praise for a HS kid. Garrett has already started at KU which is why I bring it up. Of course we'll see where Marcus is at the end of this year but I think he's already sped up his timeline as far as potentially starting at KU.

Romeo definitely adds the shooting we will need for next year. Grimes & Langford is a nice 1-2 punch for perimeter shots. Both can fill it up off the bounce or set shot

SILVIO DESOUSA • Nov 13, 2017 06:20 PM

I remember seeing something on Silvio doing well in international ball. I think that was part of the reason he didn't play AAU this past year right? Maryland wanted him bad and he has a solid base of skills to work with and refine. He's a physical specimen, just like Big Dave. Self bringing the beef with the burgers next season

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:18 PM

@BShark

I agree that we are in a good spot. I think we've been recruiting him a lot longer then Indiana's new staff and Vandy. So that could also play a factor.

If its business decision he's a Hawk. For Romeo waiting until spring after the Louisville fiasco is the best business decision. That way he knows who exactly is leaving

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:16 PM

BShark said:

@BeddieKU23 Texas is already one over btw. 12 players currently. Jones and Bamba out. 4 in ALREADY.

Yup, one over unless the transfer doesn't stick. But he was a highly coveted one. I can see Jacob Young being a casualty at UT. That's about as much sense as I could make out of their situation

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:14 PM

Indiana has 1 opening as far as I can tell. I thought they were full but I don't see a guard on their roster that was supposed to be a Sr next sesason

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:13 PM

@BShark

Of course schools have a way or working things if they want Shittu and Langford but they have a full deck at the moment

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:11 PM

Vandy is full on scholly's with Garland aboard as well

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:11 PM

It's also nice knowing that spring recruiting for once isn't a mad scramble. It's looking like this is working out perfectly for the staff

Langford • Nov 13, 2017 06:10 PM

This doesn't help Vandy? Selling Langford with Garland? Wasn't that Indiana's pitch as well.

A lot of wing/perimeter players at Vandy. I counted at least 7.

If we know for sure one of our perimeter players leaves that should give KU the edge in the spring.

On to Kentucky • Nov 13, 2017 03:15 PM

This is an important game individually for the guys who have draft aspirations after the season. There will be a ton of scouts for the games. Will be interesting to see how this team reacts to playing together or do we see guys try and make a name for themselves. This is where Frank Mason became a god last year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Malik, Devonte & Vick have big games.

The scouts will also get their first look at Marcus. He's going to turn some heads I think

What's surprising is that Shaka is in the final 2. That really just blows my mind having paid attention to this recruitment.

They are already over the scholarship limit to begin with even with Jones & Bamba not returning next season. Someone else is already being pushed out just to make room for Hepa.

Hopefully he gets it done by Wednesday

Yeah the only non-freshman that play are Gabriel and Killeya-Jones. 6 of their 8 in the rotation are freshman

Evan Daniels is saying it’s “up in the air” between Texas and KU. He’s half right. UT finished 2nd.

I really don't understand what's been so hard to understand in this recruitment. Playa is usually pretty good with his game but this one he is way off

On to Kentucky • Nov 13, 2017 02:16 PM

@KUSTEVE

Will be interesting to see how it goes, I hope your right.

If they want to play a transition fast pace tempo game that favors us even more. I think the only way they can slow us down is to play a half-court game. If Self uses the film of their 1st two games to his advantage he's going to notice just how little perimeter shooting they have. I just can't imagine a team without a few knockdown shooters beating us.

The whistle is going to be very important as well. It just seems that the refs tend to muddy these games up on the big stage and disrupt flow and make it tough to get going. I hope that our guys play smart and don't get into unnecessary foul trouble

@HawkChamp

:thumbsup: Vick in the mid-post got Tenn St out of their zone pretty quick. UK's zone looked uninspired, UVU just isn't good.

UVM is a tournament team again. It was also their 1st game of the year. But 2 missed FT's and 2 wide open three's missed saved the day for Kentucky. Rupp was in full on panic that last two minutes. It's hard for a team like UVM to match the size of Kentucky and that was the biggest difference for about 30 minutes of the game.

This is the worst Kentucky team I've seen since the Robert Morris NIT days. Who knows what that means for tomorrow but coming in KU has a clear advantage

@BShark

Surprisingly this cycle he's been tolerable

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 13, 2017 12:57 AM

Congrats to Dave, silvio and Devon for signing. Another stud on the way this week. Self really hit it out the park. Still a chance with Romeo in the spring if the roster shakes out in his favor.

On to Kentucky • Nov 13, 2017 12:53 AM

I think Kentucky if they struggle will play zone as that was talked about in their game today. Calipari could use that change of defense to force our team into outside shots and slow the pace of the game down. This is a key thing to watch

On to Kentucky • Nov 13, 2017 12:51 AM

Kentucky is terrible right now. It doesn't mean they can't beat us but they don't do anything well right now that should scare us. They have length at every position besides PG which will have an impact on our shooting if we don't play smart and look for the open shot. Rebounding will be an issue if we don't have guys locked in.

We should be double teaming them on any post touch and sagging off badly on most sets because they have 1 shooter on their team. Knox can get his shot off over anyone because his size so he's the only other threat besides Green. Washington has some body you up game so we have to play him smart. If we play smart, make perimeter shots and rebound we will win

It's funny that the q commitment was leaked but yet there is still talk like it's not happening.

Can't wait to see him announce for ku this week

Crimsonorblue22 said:

@BeddieKU23 they'll get a player back too though, right?

Yeah they do and he will help but they have nothing in the post, no go to scorer or a defense that is anything like they have had
