They need to make it an environment that players and parents don't feel like they need to go to agents to get extra cash. I'm not sure exactly how to do that, but there are brighter minds than me that could help to solve the problem.

You realize the NFL is in the same tax category as the NCAA. If they were going to go after anyone in this category it be the NFL. CRAZY $$$$ there. Of course the NCAA may be easier to nab.

Guys this will blow over because a Duke and Mich St player is mentioned. So the media will fawn over the condescending words of K and the tough words of Izzo. THey will both blame the dirty agents and not players or families. If this was just UK or Louisville or even us it would be a whole different ball game.

Another full offseason to work on his shot will help. His ball handling has really improved this season which is probably attributed to confidence.

@BigBad This happens at every level, I know some former NAIA coaches and players, they get paid and easy classes too.

I played 2 years of junior college and after the first semester I was the only starter academically eligible. So I guess Junior Colleges are in the clear...LOL But that was back in 1992-1994

What I will never understand... where was the DOJ when it came to the UNC bogus classes?

That should have been an obvious federal case.

Nothing.

Then... here comes this case. Perhaps this case is important because all kinds of fines can be levied?

Yeah... I smell corruption... but it isn't just the corruption of coaches.

A college can set any standard they want on classes. Since the classes the athletes took were also offered to regular students it cant be called cheating.

Obviously what it is, is cheapening your college for sports. That happens everywhere. Go take a look how many duke players major in "Sociology". You know they are sharing papers and tests.

Just purely looking at stats, Dedric would be the best player on our team by a mile. Of course the competition he played was not near the level he will face next season. But even in his games against good or P5 teams, he put up numbers. 35 on Iowa. 26 on Oklahoma. 21 on Cincinnati. 19 on South Carolina. 19 on Providence.

Basically, if Dedric is motivated he dominates.

But also he wasnt surrounded by a ton of talent so defenses could key on him.

Self to get rid of the hair piece?

This team isn't making the final 4. I want the streak to continue so when Self wins another title he will have multiple and the longest streak over UCLA.

Self says EVERY SINGLE YEAR "this is the softest team Ive had". This year its true. All of our starters are basketball soft.

Including DG?

Yes. How many times in the close games this year has the SENIOR point guard had a complete bone headed turnover? Though the fact that he has played 40 minutes a lot, I'd tend to give him a fatigue pass.

Brennan Greene Arrested • Feb 11, 2018 02:06 AM

Greene still holds the "Biggest douche to play for Bill Self" title and probably will for a long time.

Bill Self will not play you if your effort SUCKS. Everyone here can only evaluate guys from games. Everyone on this board at one point or another has pulled their hair out because of Newman and Vick. Imagine what Self is seeing in practice.

It has been great to watch these two grow into men. Svi from the corner is as money this year as B Rush ever was. And the effort he has been playing with on D the last two games has been fantastic.

But B Rush was an ELITE defender. An element this team is definitely missing.

This is a roster lacking some key parts. Self has followed this with a great recruiting class. This year is a bump in the road and the bump may still provide a Big 12 Reg season title. We are spoiled.

His size is impressive NOW, imagine a year with Hudy!

Great call...kind of

In the past I've always felt loses helped coach Self refocus the team. Self's loses usually follow with a victory and a feeling from me of "that is the team I thought we could be". With this team I feel like there are too many issues to assume a bounce back.

I want to believe!

I strongly dislike the weave offense. I've noticed that defenses that scout us well have largely ignored us when we use it. We dilly dally east and west to create seems and misdirection. Your post was spot on really. I think I've mentioned this each game chat that we don't run enough ball screen action.

Totally agree. I'm not a coach but if we are going with 4 3 point shooters then why not play pick and roll with the 4. Hard hedging becomes a must and it will create easier diving lanes. The NBA with all its 4 and sometimes 5 out has never left out the pick and roll and its always more dangerous when both players can shoot the 3.

It would be much harder to defend then the weave.

@BeddieKU23 I've heard rumblings he's older than listed.

Comparing Cunliffe's stats Tuesday • Jan 05, 2018 02:03 AM

@HighEliteMajor I'm saying when you haven't had minutes and you go into a game where momentum is clearly on the other team, you tend to go into attack mode. Which is what we needed. He was aggressive and had nothing to lose just attacking. As in not looking over his shoulder at the bench. When he is playing in a normal game situation he may be still thinking and not being aggressive in the way Coach Self wants him to.

Comparing Cunliffe's stats Tuesday • Jan 04, 2018 08:03 PM

@BeddieKU23 Agree that our starters are playing too much. Funny thing is Self ALWAYS tightens the rotation to about 8 in Big 12. Cunliffe makes sense here but if Preston was around I bet he'd still be odd man out.

Comparing Cunliffe's stats Tuesday • Jan 04, 2018 07:45 PM

He was in a nothing to lose situation so he appeared better than perhaps Self is seeing in practice. Similar to "everyone loves the backup QB until he is the starter."

@BigBad What relevance does your statement have to the context of point I was making with that statement? Where in my post did I even attempt to make a comparison between Malik Newman and Frank Mason?

You were mentioning high school ratings. I was showing that they are not always accurate.

Marcus Garrett was a highly sought after player, now with Newman coming off the bench, he was recruited by everyone out of high school. Mitch Lightfoot was a well regarded recruit coming of high school. And Sam Cunliffe was a 4 star recruit out of high school as well.

So you are using High School ratings as a barometer for talent?? Mason was a 3 star and Newman was a 5.....

Texas Down, Four to Go Until Morgantown • Jan 03, 2018 08:46 PM

Yes I think he was obviously overrated. He looks eerily similar to Elijah Johnson, minus explosive hops, and I dont know how he was considered so high coming out of high school. The thing is if he doesn't act like an idiot and stays for two more seasons he can develop into a solid player. We just need to lower our expectations and look at him like the sophomore that he is.

I would say the 2012 Final Four team was Self's least talented team and prior to this year, I would say that Wiggins/Embiid team was the worst team because of how inexperienced that group was.

2012 guys who spent time on an NBA roster:

  • T-Rob 7 years

  • Withey 5 years

  • Tyshawn - 2 half years

Do you think this team surpasses that? I dont.

Texas Down, Four to Go Until Morgantown • Jan 03, 2018 08:14 PM

@HighEliteMajor Do you think a year on the scout team is the same as live games? He is less than 15 games into real games under Self.

Texas Down, Four to Go Until Morgantown • Jan 03, 2018 07:53 PM

Newman looks like he is still thinking out there. A guy Self would sit at this point in Big 12 play. Some like this have come back strong(Oubre), others have faded away.

@Crimsonorblue22
Billy could help front line depth but talent is still low for a kansas team.

Last night proved they can drive. Last night proved they will drive. This drive to the basket will continue moving forward.

Last night and also the previous 2 loses were to teams who chose to defend the 3 and give up the drive. It exposed Vick the most as he and Malik really cant breakdown guys in the half court. On top of that we dont have guys that will finish off alley opps like Lucas and Jackson did last year when Frank and DG got stopped on a drive. I think we had one of those last night with Doke. Vick and Svi could but they both along with Devonte stay outside for a kick out whenever the others penetrate. Teams going forward are going to defend us this way and an adjustment needs to be made.

Key words, "with effort." They aren't putting forth the effort needed to win. Being out rebounded, out hustled, can't defend, those are effort issues. Nobody who watched that game last night said "wow, KU really played hard but the other team just made so many tough shots, nothing they could have done."

And Self has to get to them mentally. We are too thin to go the
'kill them at practice' route.

He is playing out of position and too many minutes. He's a 2 guard that can handle the point in spells like the previous two seasons. Nothing we can do at this point. Malik should be better.

Exposed again • Jan 03, 2018 02:04 PM

DG played 40 minutes. It's absolutely ridiculous Malik can't help at the point for 10 minutes, especially with Cunliffe in the mix.

Crimsonorblue22 said:

Still wondered if they all partied on nye.

So you are wondering if there is an excuse? There isn’t. The team just isn’t that good this year. On top of average talent, it’s extremely thin and too dependent on the 3. That makes our margin of error razor thin.
