@jaybate-1.0 There is not a doubt in my mind that Bookies, Television Networks, & Select Referees work in unison and/or independently to control certain outcomes of some games.

People just laugh it off with "conspiracy theory" talk.

People would have called the ShoeCo topic a conspiracy until Pitino outed them.

If a fan so much as brings up referees having an impact on the outcome, they are almost immediately ostracized. This, in and of itself, has allowed for the referees to hide behind their wrongdoings.

@nuleafjhawk Rumi suggested that we "let go of thinking". For some of us, that might be an impossibility.

Notre Dame passing, ball handling, and constant attack-mode was so fun to watch. First time in a long time I've actually enjoyed watching offensive play.

WSU is better than KU and you guys just need to get over it. They have better tradition, the better venue, the better coach, more all-time wins, better school colors, a better mascot, better fans, a better education, and all around more class.

And their Head coaching position is a destination job, not a stepping stone.

So just get over yourselves.

@approxinfinity hey I don't care for Marshalls temperment either. But I also didn't like my older brothers beating my ass at everything growing up, including fisticuffs. But because of it, I'm the toughest hardest working sob in the entire family and now the tables have turned.

@drgnslayr I grew my first garden last year. My dog Cow ( English Shepherd) promptly ate the basil and parsley I planned to use in my pizza sauce. So I had crushed tomatos on the pies. Gardening is a lot harder than the good green thumbs make it look.

Kstate losing 3 players • Mar 25, 2015 03:07 AM

@justanotherfan I think they will regardless. Tcu and Tech are on the rise. And I hope UT gets Marshall from WSU. The conference needs to improve. If Ford goes I'd be happy, too.

Silicon Valley, Lawrence, Kansas • Mar 24, 2015 03:13 PM

Perhaps, the constant adulation these kids receive from playing in a packed AFH swells the egos too much. They're worshipped like pharaohs and the Ego is a terrible thing if not controlled.

I wonder why Roy achieved 2 rings within 6 years of departure. It always stands out to me.

It's never the courageous thing to do to place blame on officials. The manly-man will always counter with "losers blame the officials." And I had a very important priority to be involved in yesterday, so I cannot comment with much intelligence on the game.

But, I predicted before the the game that the Refs would control this from the very beginning with fouls, and consequently get inside the players heads.

A quick look at the game's play by play, shows by the second time out the foul count was KU 7 and WSU 1.

I have a lot respect for officials, for the most part. I Umpired baseball games starting at 5A-6A in High School, American Legion, as well as Junior College. And while a lot of them do the best job that they can, we know, WE KNOW, that we can get inside a players head. If a pitcher is used to getting the corner, or below the knee strike, and he's not getting those calls, they can fall apart with every other pitch in their arsenal. I've seen it many times. We talk about it. And we justify it by saying, "hey, it's my strike zone today, he needs to locate it." And we are right. The best ones can adjust. But to believe that we don't affect things (especially from a psychological standpoint) is complete nonsense.

It's probably not why the Hawks lost, and it Sounds like a lot of players could have brought more to the table. But to think the officials play no part in the way a game plays out, is just not realistic.

I can say with most certainty, the last two years have been far easier to move on from without duress as I just don't have the same connection with the players that I once had. Maybe as Frank & Graham continue with their career some of that will return.

It's Venting Time • Mar 23, 2015 12:22 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 did it affect the psyche of the team going forward ?

It's Venting Time • Mar 23, 2015 12:16 AM

Didn't watch the game. Did the refs set the tone early with fouls?

I'm predicting the refs take The hawks out of the game early to provide a controlled viewership study for future references. How Many tubes turn on for the sweet 16 for wsu when they are no longer the Cinderella vs how many tubes KU has turned on in past viewership opportunities.

Yes, a part of me has truly become this jaded with how money is controlling the game. This game was set up from the very beginning in my opinion. Espn has been plugging it since day 1.

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 21, 2015 12:05 AM

@globaljaybird you've heard the fans castigate Self even with his outstanding career here and you think any of those coaches other than Turg would last more than 3 years? Not me. Danny isn't ready. Tad can coach but he couldn't cut it at Kansas either. And Jacque as a college coach at high elite level? Maybe in a decade.

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 20, 2015 09:53 PM

@KUSTEVE No he is not. And time will tell you otherwise. But we can just agree to disagree.

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 20, 2015 09:39 PM

15 to 9 second-half fouls in favor of WSU. I think they were wanting to see this, and the media has been talking about it for days. NCAA needs drama like I need some 25 year Scotch and a stogie to celebrate for these AWESOME JAYHAWKS today. I don't smoke or drink, though :)

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 20, 2015 09:36 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I have to respectfully disagree with you on that Crimson!! Marshall is not afraid. I see no fear in him at all. Of course, I would love to be wrong on this one.

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 20, 2015 09:32 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I hear ya, but it is my opinion that Self appears to be an anxious person. I watch his body language and pay close attention to his comments. Anxiety is not good in moments like this. Marshall is a lot more like Holberg...cool and calm and that is evident in the way the boys respond and play.

Friday Tourney Chat • Mar 20, 2015 09:23 PM

I wonder how the Jayhawks feel--will they be the hunter or hunted? I hope Self doesn't let this get to him, and keeps his approach just as if it is any other team. But Marshall has to have gotten under his skin slightly, and my feeling is this will be personal for Self.

Down go the Cyclones • Mar 19, 2015 07:21 PM

I can't have sound, so wouldn't have caught that. Also, my attention is definitely divided.

The refs are always going to impact the game. I wish they would get 6 refs per game, instead of three. Leave them at half court.

But, "excuses are monuments of nothingness, they build bridges to nowhere."

6/23 from 3 point land and being out rebounded by 15 has nothing to do with refereeing.

Your candor is splendid.

@jaybate-1.0 I've definitely lost passion for the college game over the last several years as I become more aware of the behind-the-scenes money biz seems to be controlling things. I really miss witnessing the development of 3 and 4 year players, and the satisfaction I get from seeing them grow. Self has bought into the OAD/TAD strategy, although it does not appear to be in his best interests based on his coaching style and competency needed to run his schemes. There seems to be too much money at stake to move to a formula used by the NFL & MLB, but that will be the only thing that reverses the current course, imho.

@jaybate-1.0 I will forever remember the day I changed my perception of failure and struggle. Your semantics are more appropriate for the picture I was painting. Thank you.

@Statmachine without the darkness, can one truly appreciate the value of light? Without failure, can one truly understand success? Adversity is a good thing, my friend. Next season will be much more enjoyable for you in contrast to the emotional enjoyment of this season. I hear Kansas has the most spoiled and whiny fan base when I'm In varying regions of the U.S. Maybe we need this.

For Lulu • Mar 17, 2015 01:29 PM

@jaybate-1.0 ...and for the first time in several years, Self knew what the make up of his team would look like the following year and I think his coaching evolved, in part, because of that. He went into 2011-2012 knowing what to expect of his team because of all the returnees: Tyshawn, Elijah, TRob, Withey, & Releford. With KY & Teahan he was able to shape them into a championship caliber team. 2012-2013 as well as 2013-2014 presented many new variables going into the season, but Self had his Interior Prime Time Players and the tools necessary to play his hi-lo game, His bread & butter. So he was able to stick with what worked in the past.

Fast forward to 2014-15 Self was faced with the loss of his PG Thaarpe as well as Joel, whom he expected to be around for two years. Missing out on Turner was the final piece and catalyst for Self's innovative 2014-2015 year. With the exception of the Wild Card who is Kelly Oubre, imho, Self quickly recognized that the pieces of puzzle for this year, will be the very same pieces he is working with next year in 2015-2016. I don't recall a major strategic and tactical change this great in all of the time Self has been our guy at Kansas. For lack of a better expression, and to borrow your clever phraseology, I have the sense that he has put the entire damn team in a toughening box for a full season.

Bring on the Shockers! • Mar 17, 2015 02:57 AM

Both the Shockers & the Jayhawks are Elite 8 teams, and possibly Final Four teams had they not been Bracketed with the Kentucky Wildcats. It makes no financial $en$e to have Teams from a State with such a low population making it far in the tourney. WSU has lost their Cinderella luster, so the TV sets will not turn on for them like they have the last two years. Kansas & WSU just don't draw the ratings. I'd like be able to access television ratings for each game of the NCAA tournament over the last 20 years. Can anybody tell me where to seek this?

For Lulu • Mar 17, 2015 02:51 AM

@Statmachine Self was forced to improve as a coach this year. We will see the benefits of this years trials moving forward.

CLONES CLONE BAD BALL • Mar 17, 2015 01:22 AM

@HighEliteMajor I appreciate you taking the time to revisit this and clarify. I interpreted free your mind/open your mind/closed mind all the same. I can understand what you mean by expanding your mind, which is what I try my hardest to do daily, and is a reason I come here. A majority of the posters here know more about the x/o part of the game than I do, and I like to read it. Although, most of this has become commentary and less technical but I still enjoy it. For example, when there is indication that Self could scheme better to get more open 3's, I enjoy the elaboration on what that scheme could look like from a technical standpoint.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 16, 2015 03:17 AM

@HighEliteMajor Though I do not agree with everything you are saying, especially the fact that you do not believe that familiarity (balanced scheduling) has "zero to do with it", I did take some time and looked at your point objectively. Although it could be coincidence (I doubt it), after each fool's gold comment, there was a steady decline. I think there are so many things going on with this team: fatigue, scouting, among other things, I have to agree with you that your point is of note.

@HighEliteMajor are you saying familiarity with an opponent has no bearing on performance?

@HighEliteMajor said:

One question: So the first 25 games, we had appreciably different inside scoring than the last 9 games?

HEM why aren't you giving credence to the fact that round robin scheduling and seeing a team twice can, and most likely does impact the scouting report defense?

The third time we played the teams--as I referenced in the "BIG 12 TOURNEY ONLY" data set above our 3pt % dropped all the way down to 25%. Bruce Webber showed the rest of the league how to guard the three successfully. In our second game against them we were 2/13. And the decline was on from there. Texas 1/8. WVU 015...and so on.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 06:23 PM

@HighEliteMajor

I was referencing the first tech game, which could be a mistake/misunderstanding on my part.

Self's first fools gold comment was the UTAH game. Our percentage before that game, is the same as it was after. Actually slightly increased. So the fact that you think "fools gold" statements hurt their play is not credible.

They were 167/214 (I did double check and changed) up to and including the second Techgame, which was 2/3 into the season But my contention is that the decline is due to their losing their legs..

Shake it down any way you want to. This team is a 37-38% three point shooting team. I've demonstrated that above.

Are you of the opinion that Self has stated on multiple occasions that this team is tired and needs rest and that leg's don't affect jumpshots?

Could it be possible that after the second tech game Big 12 players were now seeing the hawks for a second time and scouted the 3pt shot defense better?

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 06:13 PM

Other things to consider...

You are more likely to be fouled on a 2pt shot vs a 3pt shot.

This team excels at the free throw line.

Fouls stop the game and help rest the already tired legs of this exhausted team.

Self Fullfilling Prophecy • Mar 15, 2015 05:57 PM

Bill Self March 13, 2012

After losing prior to the NCAA Tourney

"I kind of like it, I hate saying that. I don't like losing, but I kind of like the fact it's not fool's gold with us anymore. When you make shots an don't guard and get away with it...our guys saw first-hand what will happen in a one-and-done situation."

I've always thought Bill's reference to 'fool's gold' was a reference to depending on shots to win games, and not defense.
