15-43 from inside the arc. That ain't good....
What the eff is up with Ochai???
Just checking in very late. Looking at stats. Looks like Dave was okay in the first half, but he is oh-fer this half?
Ichabods are tough on D - held us to 1 less than we scored on the #1 team....
Pitched battle for the rebound lead - 2 with 6, 3 with 5 and 3 with 4...
@DanR said in Washburn Game Thread:
We should have had 12 players in double digits scoring
Would be tough since we've only played 11 guys, but I get the point... ;)
10 Hawks have scored - need Gethro to step up... ;)
ESPN Gamecast only has KU at a 99.9% chance of winning at this point. Not 100%, so there is yet hope for the Ichabods!
Not able to watch, but I note that Dave not only leads the team in scoring - it's Washburn, of course - but has finally recorded a block and an assist - 3-1/2 games into the season...
@BeddieKU23 said in After 3 games- Discussion:
Analytics say he's been a below average rebounder since he's been here.
His Per 40 rebound numbers are poor (hovering in the 11's in 3 years). The advanced stats are not better. Doke got his hands on 21% of all rebounds while he was on the floor. Dave so far is at 14%.
Defensive rebounding, Dave is at 20% so far, Doke was at 26.9. That's a huge gap.
Agreed. Last year, Dave was on the floor almost exactly 1/2 the minutes Doke was, and he had just more than 1/3 the number of rebounds. And, he probably benefited somewhat from occasionally being the second big on the floor and not having to match up against the other teams best big. I would also note that with half the minutes of Doke, he had about 1/8th the number of blocks.
There have been several posts suggesting that to be successful (in the title hunt?), we're going to "need" Dave or have him "produce" at some point. I would ask - "need" him for what or what are we looking for in terms of production?
I would agree that for depth and certain match-ups, he "needs" to be in the game for 15-20 minutes on average. But I would argue that when he is in, we basically run ZERO plays for him. If the guards throw it in to the paint to him, his sole function should be to kick it back out quickly, and not look to score. I might make an exception or two if only if the other team is pushing out the perimeter and he has someone no taller than about 6'6" behind him. And, then the only shot is a quick baby hook from 3 feet or less. Perhaps then maybe, I emphasize maybe, there is a 50% chance he scores. Otherwise, the only time he should be taking shots is off of offensive rebounds, and the occasional drive and dish.
The objective at this point is to simply not have him be a major liability on the court. He will continue to be on the defensive side due to poor footwork and positioning, inability to guard the perimeter, no rim protection, and mediocre rebounding skills. But, hopefully, less so than he has been on the offensive end. To put it bluntly, his numbers so far are horrific. 25% FG on 6-24 "shooting." ZERO assists. Unfathomably, ZERO blocked shots (8 KU players have recorded a blocked shot - he ain't one of them). 9 turnovers, which leads the team. And, it not just the stats - the offense completely bogs down when he is in because he takes up negative space.
Simply put, have him focus solely on rebounding, drawing a few fouls when he gets offensive rebounds, and otherwise mostly stay out of the way. If he can do that, he can be a useful part of the rotation...
Fugly win - but any win against UK is beeeautiful....

If Kentucky makes another garbage ass three...
We should foul tbh...
I don't like that against them - not convinced we could get the RB - or they could tip it back...
Well - we're going to have to make a FT. No mean feat for us...
F+++ - ball should be in Harris' hands to distribute...
CB bailed him out...
Weird effing game. Ochai 3-15. Braun 2-10.
Jalen goes out and Dave comes in and our little lead has frittered away....
13 minutes into the half and its 16-9....
Dave 6-25 for the year - and HCBS thinks he will be our leading scorer????
Dave now 1-9. Every other starter has more rebounds....

We get the lead. McCormick comes in and blows an easy board. Why self
Well..he's kinda better than Mitch, only slightly though no sarcasm.
I disagree - Mitch won't take as many bad shots. And, he can at least block a shot now and then...
@wissox said in Calamari Game Thread:
Can't change your pivot foot Ochai.
I think he changed it a few times on that possession.... ;)
27% from the field. 15% from 3. 65% FTs - and we lead......
Dave just missed point blank non-dunk. Now 1-7...
@BigBad said in Calamari Game Thread:
Think about Dave going against Doke in practice for years and all he learned was a jump hook? Did he learn no other moves to get his shot off?
Apparently not - he is 6-21 from the field so far this year. To go along with zero blocks. Make that zero shots he has blocked. He's been blocked about a dozen times...
@BeddieKU23 said in Calamari Game Thread:
I'm sorry. This is the worst post player we've ever had start
Dave is 1-6 this game after sterling back to back 33% games. Has to be one of the least efficient low post scorers in the history of KU basketball...
Without the 2 technical fouls, we'd be down just 4...
Dave starting second half of course...
Well, we at least have more made FGs than TOs now...
Please stop running sets for Dave...
KU and KSU will be a barnburner....
2 -13 from the field. 7 TOs. UK isn't really forcing the TOs, we are just throwing the ball away or up at the basket.

2 -12 from the field... More TOs than buckets...
Yeah, Kentucky has long NBA athletes at every spot, a lot harder than the first two opponents in that regard.
Yeah, but the mighty Richmond Spiders were able to manage...
2 -12 from the field... More TOs than buckets...
MSU trying REALLY hard to choke this one...
@AsadZ said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
Self once again said that Dave will be this team's highest scorer. How do folks feel about it. He has shown some good moves and his jumper is smooth.
Self also said that the two teams we faced this week were not good match ups for Dave especially St Joe.
Can Dave improve his D, I am still optimistic.
If Gonzaga and St. Joe's weren't good match-ups, who would be? A team with a slow, non-scoring threat big? The Zags had one skilled big, and he ate Dave's breakfast, lunch and dinner. St. Joe played small and he couldn't cover the perimeter and was blown by on drives. And, against a small team, he still just made 33% of his shot attempts.
I don't mean to dump on him - he works hard and puts in the effort. He's a pretty good FT shooter. He has a decent jumper (but I would prefer almost anyone else shooting 3s than him taking 18 footers). But he is just an average rebounder, doesn't provide much rim protection (zero blocks in 31 minutes), and is a TO machine.
Hopefully, he just "sped up" and will settle down. And, there likely will be a few teams where he will match up reasonably well. But, be our leading scorer???? The idea that HCBS is still thinking that the offense will go through him frightens me....
I would be fine if we run no more than a handful of plays for him a game, and he scores 8+- a game off a jumper, couple of offensive rebound putbacks, and a couple of FTs...
So, a further thought about Dave (and I would love to see his +-). In 33 minutes in 2 games, he has 16 points and 9 rebounds. Doesn't seem too bad. But that's the best that can be said. VERY inefficient 16 points - 33% from the field (less than half Doke's %). ZERO blocks. 7 turnovers. The fact is that the only thing he does reasonably well is shoot FTs. Notwithstanding his size, he doesn't provide any real rim protection or interior presence. His footwork is poor as is his positioning. He is not an effective or efficient scorer. He doesn't handle passes well and doesn't pass well out of the paint. He works hard and puts in the effort, but he isn't a starter quality at a top level program. He simply doesn't make us a better team when he is on the floor - arguably the opposite. While he may be able to be reasonably effective against some teams, he is a liability against quality bigs - Timme owned him. Based on a limited sample set of two games, our best line-up most nights is going to be 5 guards/wings....
So, we're averaging 92 points a game. Problem is just that Gonzaga is averaging 96...
That's nice ball movement....
@BeddieKU23 said in St Joes Game Thread:
Free throws and layups this would be a 30 point lead if we made either
Really can't complain about FT shooting today - 76%
Braun getting close to a double-double...
Harris actually knows how to dish on a break...!!!!
Will give Jalen credit - in both games he's worked pretty hard on the glass. Can't say that about anyone else...
We simply can't stop teams from scoring - at least getting shots they want. Our best defense is hoping they miss....
More than half their shot attempts have been 3s....
WTF
